This is very nice. I'm an exploratory geologist. I use two lexan glass boards cut just a little larger than a 9x12 and drill two holes near the corners for 550 Paracord. I put strips of duct tape to border the plastic and tape one side of both boards to allow to fold like a binder. I might just try adding the pocket to one side.

For maps, a laminator is your friend (hot or cold). There is waterproof paper for laser printers available. Combine the two - lamination seals in the toner so it doesn't transfer once printed, waterproof paper doesn't spread lamination leaks if punctured, and toner doesn't bleed like link does.
Recommend buttons over snaps and velcro - no sound when operated. Would also recommend an opaque flap over the cover plastic sheet, no glint reflections, and keeps the plastic pretty for longer. You could put a hard surface in the cover and add triangle flaps on the sides to allow viewing the map under a "hood".

as a soldier from the 80s, we made map boards out of cardboard, 100 mph tape, and clear acetate. You could make a "map book" that allows you to simply "turn the page" when you approach the edge of the map sheet. Obviously, back then we were not making maps on our desktop and printing them, so this is for published 1:50,000 or 1:250,000 maps issued to us.
Add some 550 cord to make a handle and spine, and make it to fit a standard issue map case and you are in business. Small enough to be used mounted or dismounted, and large enough to hold 5 or 6 maps. I even saw some that held the bigger "special maps" (Graf, Hohenfels, etc) in a way that you could see one quarter of the map, or unfold the whole map.
    Fieldcraft...good to see.

We used clear kitchen contact paper (always did one side). It also allowed for marking up with a grease pencil. Erasable markers where not a good choice any dampness and you lost your makings of MSR's., FEBA, and where they put the class 6 store. The trick is to with a flat area put the map on the sticky end and push out any air pockets as you go. You only get 1 shot to do it right.

The cheapest picture frames at Walmart etc. use lexan for their "glass." If you have a table saw with a very fine blade you can cut the lexan very easily. You can use bottle bases and a sharpie to mark the corners for cutting those nice round corners on the plastic.

    • @joshuarumsey2302
      @joshuarumsey2302 2 года назад +3

when cutting lexan try using a utility knife blade point. Not from the sharpened side but as a scratch awl from the dull side. It scores it nicely. Deep, matching scores on both sides will allow it to break where you like it. The edge will need to be sanded as it is jagged. Also the saw blade from a skillsaw or table saw can be turned backwards and produces good results as well. This produces a finer edge but has a tendency to melt through the lexan.

Plexi is a pain in the ass to work with. thin material like this loves to quickly break when you touch it with a drill bit. Thicker material gets very hot very fast and melts on your drill bit or tap. Plexi also scratches easily so I don't think that's a good option for this project.

I have a suggestion: spray fixative. You can find it at art supply stores. Artists who work in ink, pencil, charcoal, whatever, use spray fixative to keep the work from smearing. It works the same way as polycoat works on stained wood. After printing ot your map, spray it with a thin coat of fixative. Let it dry, spray another thin coat on it. The plastic will allow humidify to collect. Leaving maps in the case when not needed is a bad idea.

What we do here on Argentina is first to "illuminate" the map, using highlighters to mark the coordinates, names or points of interest, to make them stand out in a quick glance. Then cut it in squares of a comfortable size to fold (usually the size of the combat shirt pocket), take some transparent scotch wide tape, and tape the back and then the front of each piece. Finally you join them all back together with some more tape. You end up with a weather safe map, that does not need a map case, fits almost everywhere, you can write directly on top without worries, and erase it just fine.

  • @stillenacht8518

Quick fix for keeping yourself centered on the map, have one large map that is medium resolution (big area, big details) that covers the entire area you are operating in. Then a smaller copypaper page sized high resolution map for each area within that map. The big one is for long distance stuff and keeping track of position of multiple elements in the battlespace, and the little guys are high resolution topographical maps of the immediate area for land navigation and planning close range troop movements. Take whichever ones you need for the mission in your kit and leave the extras in your ruck.

Put the fasteners in the Lexan first. Then put them in the tabs. THEN bend the tabs around and mark them on the cover to sew on.

Damn, I will need a sewing machine lol. That is far from boring stuff ;)
Question: anything special to look for when selecting a sewing machine for this kind of projects (and not designer clothes)?

Something that might help stop the bleeding (transfer) of the ink to the plastic from your printed maps, is to take some flat or satin matte spray, and give both sides of your map a light spray. Do one side, wait at least 3-4 hours, do the back, wait another 3-4 hours and repeat for at least ome more coat on both sides. Should take care of the bleeding problem

That looks good. Course you can use DRY ERASE MARKERS to make notes and such. Don't use purple. Will stain plexiglass.
What you made is good,! But heavy for back packing. Ounces count. But I do like the very first type. Great for rain. You just don't leave your maps on them. But then again, I have not printed out any of my maps.
    Good segment! Thanks!

Scotch tape, acetate, grease pencils, fastened to a sheet of plywood, hanged on the wall of the TOC. (M577). That's what I remember.

Two pieces of plexiy glass and some metal clips for stacks of paper from staples works wonders. Then again there is mounted vs dismounted

It would be pretty sweet to add an articulating compass mount to that.

For the map's ink sticking, just add wide clear tape on top of the map. For one, it turns the map onto a whiteboard so you can directly scribble on top. And it keeps the map pristine.
If you do both sides and slightly overlapping the edges on both sides, you can get a sorta wateresistant map. Its not perfect but it turns a home map into a better product for cheap

What sewing machine is that? I've never succeeded finding a sewing machine strong enough for that many layers without going full industrial?
Have you considered selling a few map cases?
