Corporal’s Corner absolutely has the best land nav video on RUclips.
Oh heck ya. I never gave up my paper maps. I still carry them in the vehicles, and ruck sack. GPS is alright, usually takes you the long way around, but paper maps and highlighters and grease pencils work even when the power is out. Never quit what works.
As an Army Defense Mapping School graduate from 1986...I gotta say i LOVE my maps. My old Delorme Gazateers are all safely stashed in my special spot. The older ones were more detailed.
Old fashioned road atlas is a must-have. I keep an updated one for the whole US and keep a state atlas in each car.
If you happen to be watching this from Britain like me, get OS (Ordnance Survey) maps, they make them for all the UK (or you can have custom ones made) in waterproof wax paper or plastic and the detail they come in is incredible
When you travel out of state stop at a rest stop and pick up a few there
Google earth is also a good place to get printed maps and they’re free as long as you got the paper/ink and you can laminate them with packing tape to make them more durable 👍🏻
Great advice Brother thank you.
Rand McNally sends a huge thumbs up!! 👍
If you're planning on traveling, you can also go online to that states website and order a paper road map to your house.
I do this every time I go to a new city or town
Super vid! I am old school, really dig this. After EMP, everyone will be old school.
Hi from Syracuse NY brother and thank you for sharing the facts and truth about no internet and nothing works or battery died now you need a paper map
You are such a smart man. You have helped me so much. I live down Hwy 25 south of you about 120 miles. Your advice is given calmly and so easy to understand. You have helped me prioritize my preparedness. Your logical approach and specific examples and products you recommend - i have followed to the letter. I still am a year away from having my plan mostly completed. It all has to do with budget. I have saved nearly every single one of your shows. Thank you so very much for taking your time to share your skills and experience. I want you to realize you are performing a HUGE service to your fellow Patriots. Thank you again my Brother. MAGA (hopefully that sign off will not get my comment deleted or shadow banned)
I’ve been watching your channel for about 7 months; ever since I have been recovering from surgery, Never bothered to watch RUclips prior but when your recovering from wounds I watched. You put out great material , I’ve even purchased some items you reviewed ( roaring fire) and a few others, I also use Sportsman guide, but as a Former Marine of the Reconnaissance community with 8 years active duty I have to say map pouches suck, you can’t open the whole map if needed, much better to laminate it, or use scotch tape , also you don’t ever want to have to take a map out of a pouch to read it, with that said keep up the good videos: also this is the first comment I’ve ever wrote on RUclips 👌
Some years ago, before GPS, when I did a fair amount of traveling by motorcycle I carried a big ziploc full of maps. I still love using them. I had forgotten the name of the company DeLorme so thanks for showing that. Also Corporal's Corner is a great reference for land nav. Plus if you are like me and tying your shoes is about as fancy as you get with knots Corporal's Corner has a great video on knot tying.
Love Delorme, they got swallowed by Garmin . Eartha 3 Story globe at their HQ in Maine is gone.
Thanks Don enjoy your Sunday Gunday! God bless you and your family
Good of you to remind us of the simplicity and dependability of maps.
When I was a company commander I went on a rant about depending on GPS. My brigade commander pulled me aside and told me I’m on the right track. If WW3 breaks out between the big boys, all of those satellites will become space junk.
dont have particular pouch but do have others, love them. this one goes for under 10 $$ (or 10 euros for us, europeans) here in Slovenia. will deff buy one. tnx for great review :D
great skill to have. i bought a Garmin Fenix 6X Pro as backup. i was in the Army long time ago and i know my orientation skills are terrible. and i learnt nothing in the (communist) Army. as a side note, im not surprised at the incompetence of the russian army.
This is a good video. Quick note though, you don't need cell signal for a cell phone to pick up GPS signals. GPS signals are available even in the most remote places. What you don't get is the corresponding mapping information, unless you have already downloaded this data.
Great advice. Thank you. 🌼
Thanks for the wisdom, Sootch00. Also It's my Birthday today !!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy Birthday Brother Patriot Jerry!!
Thank You
Thanks Sootch. I didn't know these existed. I agree Corporals Corner videos on using a compass is super helpful and easy to understand.
Hi Sootch, do Sportsman's Guide ship internationally? Also what alot of the bushcraft guys are doing in the UK is getting their maps printed up onto silk clothes, just like having it on a handkerchief, it won't tear, rip, crease etc so easily, doesn't matter if it gets wet etc. Thought I'd mention that.
Great review Don...
Every Patriot needs to learn latitude and longitude and mapping they also can download Google maps if Google goes down. Everybody needs to stay off the interstates and highways only stay on dirt roads and trails communication will be the very first action they will take against us.
If google goes down, you have loads of offline maps apps. You don't need internet to navigate with gss, which is a standalone system. Jesus!
Truck stops, National Park Headquarters offices, USGS, and AAA are some places you can get maps. The National Park Service and USGS are good places for getting topo maps.
😆 yeah... that NJ senator a few years back.. was ordering maps by placing two fingers under the truck stop bathroom stall!!! (Disclosure: People and places or finger numbers may vary).
I took an Uber to a place inside my city and the driver's gps said we were not at my destination when we were actually in front of the building i needed to go to. proof that gps is not always trustworthy
I know a Royal Marine ho swears by cloth maps and water proof ink he gets them from a good printer Iam sure there's menny in the US verry good and Bering cloth folds small and not heavy good idea thanks sooch
Thanks for all the great information
Great video it pays to always keep a map on hand
See!?!? We may be old... but he and I agree... I get a lot of flak!! When I open my garage and someone see's my BRIEFCASE; and I open it, to show all the OLD ROAD MAPS. But, they and MY USGS Survey maps MAY be useful again!!
Print/buy a map. You need a map. But if it gets really bad there won’t be street signs so you need a good sense of direction, a nice prayer and if you can read a compass you’ll be ahead Unless the magnetosphere gets much weaker but there will be worse things happening if that goes south.
No cell signal isnt really a problem as there are are decent offline maps. I picked up a cheap garmin etrex vista hcx too. Now if gps satelliites stop working or gets taken out, thats when maps are gold. I prefer pouches that arent tacticool.
It's getting harder and harder to find paper maps! I have one of my area. When we traveled to Gatlinburg last year i couldn't find one at the rest stop we stopped at. As a hiker i like having a paper map if I'm going somewhere unfamiliar or new. Technology doesn't always work. I had a Garmin e20 just flat out quit me one day (didn't really need it luckily). It never turned back on again.
Love this been looking for exactly that
Good luck getting it on Amazon the army survival guide won’t ship until September!
Great review and gear
I like it. Ordered one.
I also suggest Garmin Tread, Giga and Onyx Offroad
the smartphone is a hidden traitor.
I'll take the plastic map sleeves, you can keep the water bottle holder
@CorporalsCorner is one of the only RUclips sources I trust other than @Sootch00 and a few others. I actually found Corporals Corner as a recommended video after pne of Sootch00's videos like 3-4 years ago and I have been hooked ever since.
I carry a railroad atlas. I can make a hand exchange for a ride home. Or hobo or walk across less traveled bridges to get home.
Maps are great, especially a survival mode simulation...I on the other hand , Appalachian mountains and getting lost on purpose
If you are not from Appalachia you won't be welcomed there.
@@Xonid1 I grew up their both sides of my family...im at the foot hill of the Appalachian mountains now in ohio..I figured I hit it and go south work my way down, I already have 110L pack loaded ready...I remember hearing stories from my grandfather about people going missing all the time
Hello from Detroit,MI. Looking to move to SC soon. Michigan is a tactical nightmare. You cut off the bridge to the UP and Canada you have a forced lock down. Was wondering what Spartanburg or Greenville is like. I've only driven through SC to get to myrtle beach. Lol so any information or video you can point me to I'd gladly appreciate it.
At staples I found maps. Maybe try there if you can't find maps some where else
Womp womp..."item currently sold out"
Wonder if you can get grease pencils to make notes on the plastic as you go
I use a football play holder
Thats what i was just thinking about putting in my bag. My car has a map. But not my bag
Yes Corporals Corner is the man!!
Ive recently gotten into hiking, like a lot. 20 miles at a time. And my phone almost never has any service, so now im trying to figure out a map system.
I was a land nav guru back in the day. Give me a military map and a compass and get out of the way.
so many people dont even know how to read a map now a days :( . i work as a truck driver and a trainer i couldnt even tell you how many dont know how to read one . let alone a fraction of those whom do know how to read a map cant read a topo and lead them selves out with a compass on either map
That's because reading maps is not part of the US public studies. All of the important things needed to be self reliable is not taught in us public schools anymore. They don't want smart citizens who don't need them. They want brainwashed knee benders who will turn on one another at a moments notice.
Instead of laughing at them not nowing just do your best to teach them.
I just checked Sportsman's Guide. The Czech Military Surplus Map Case is sold out.
No cell signal means no gps? You couldn't be more wrong. The two are totally unrelated. There are lots of offline maps/apps and stand-alone units and google maps can save an area for offline navigation. Also any route initiated on-line will take you to your destination off-line.
If your government cuts access to gps, get a receiver that works on galileo, beidou and glonass.
There are only two ways that would take you to paper maps: no power and/or no satellites.
Dang! I was gonna grab a couple but I don't see them listed on their website.
Can't find that map case anywhere. Not even sportsman guide or even online anywhere
So, what is your pace count? Where is your map protractor and compass? (Drafting compass/divider)
Pre laminated can work
I always carry a decided gps. It doesn't require cellular connection
I just went on sportsman’s guide and they are sold out of them right now
I am from SC. Where did you get the SC book map?
SOOTCH, I don't see a link to the item on Sportsmans guide? Went to the website and couldn't find it
I would have a set of moon tables. what time does it rise and set. When Is it full, new, etc. John in Wilmer Texas
Old school GPS devices will still work until your batteries run out. Still prefer paper maps!
Also will do offline maps apps, which there are lots.
Whats that youtube site you mentioned.
Nice!👍👍
It is getting hard to find decent maps. Any recommendations on where to find them.
If you want a state map, stop at the visitors center when you cross into that state. They are free.
Map apps still work as maps when GPS doesn't connect....they also allow you to download maps so you don't need download data.
You mean when mobile data doesn't connect. Pretty hard not to get gps signal outside.
I have a Florida map wanna increase my map got a sailboat ready to leave at a moments notice so I'm currently downloading and printing charts about 10 per day
I have recently seen some tubers with maps printed on tyvek. Do you know where to get those???
For land navigation, check out Stokermatic on RUclips. He's a land nav guru. You won't be disappointed.
Can't find on SG website.
I emailed my state and got two maps in 2017. Check your states webpage first.
can not find it on their website.
If you have state farm ins. They have free USA atlas' every year.
Sootch no link to the map case?
I HEARD FROM SOME SURVIVALIST WHO'S NAME I CAN'T RECALL SAYING THAT IF YOU'RE LOST IN THE WOODS, IT'S BEST WALK ALONGSIDE A RIVER TO FIND YOUR WAY OUT. IS THAT TRUE IN CERTAIN CASES? 🇺🇲🦊🇺🇲
cases where there is a river ;)
I got the one from the nex
what make and model is your get home bag?
Kinkos Copy can laminate your maps
What’s old is new again…
Dumb girl question: what are ranger beads?
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pace_count_beads
Not a dumb question...
A string of plastic beads used to track your pace count for distance while traveling by foot.
One thing I'd suggest to new pathfinder. Compare your pace to a known distance , then you can use simple math to get your bead pace count conversion to approximately the correct distance counted.
Steady goes .
Use avenza for topo
Can't find it????
no link to that map case?
Where can i buy from germany easily?
I’ve never stopped using maps. GPS, certainly for following vehicle routes, is useless!
can anyone post a link to where to buy this ?
Appears to be sold out.
👍👍
If you're an AAA member you can get maps for free.
Does anyone think we are near a SHTF situation now? Our current encumbrances could shut down the internet if they wanted. I wouldn't put it past these fascist to do it. We all need access to ham radio sets too.
They're all sold out.
