Please be prepared - this is an overly detailed, slow-paced, and slightly boring overview of first time users muddling through a slightly complex setup/use/clean-up process. Although, by no means an entertainment video, it may come in handy for anyone overwhelmed with the 'beginner' aspects of this airless paint sprayer. Enjoy!
I'm fairly new to paint sprayers myself. My stepfather is a professional painter and he loves the Graco brand. I plan to start me a small farm soon. I will be making furniture and other things as a way to generate a side income on the farm. I was looking at this prayer along with brushes & rollers for when the project requires a coat of paint. I like your video as it was very helpful.
I have no experience with the Wagner 350 so I won't be able to advise you on that one. But, seeing that you're a builder, I would suggest you consider the Graco X7 instead of the X5. For around $100 more, you get a little more power (can run longer hoses) and a handy stand. Maybe others on here have used the Wagner and could pipe up on this?
I was determined not to spend $1700 to have my basement walls painted by a professional, so I bought the Graco Magnum Painter Plus. Your video, (part 1-start-up), was MOST helpful. I followed your demonstration step by step and was up and running in no time. It took my wife and me two days to mask everything, (we're in our late 70"s), fifteen minutes to perform the start-up, and only three hours to paint the walls. We are extremely happy with our finished product. If you have a big painting project and dread the thought of using a roller and spending days on a ladder I highly recommend the Graco Magnum Painter Plus and watching your videos. Trust me, you'll be happy with the easy results. Your videos are a must watch. Thank you for giving me the confidence to take on something new and making life easier. Great videos!! (By the way, my total cost for the Graco paint sprayer, masking material, and paint was less than $500). Paint on.......
Exactly what I was looking for. Out of the box it felt overwhelming. I appreciated the detail and the speed of instruction. Also edited well. I looked at a couple others but for a complete airless sprayer beginner like me this was the one. Totally worth it!
Although I’m a jack of all trades master of none it’s hard for me to do something like this for the first time. Thank you very much for this video it’s very helpful. Thanks again from Canyon Lake, Texas
great video! it was very long to cover the basics; but, it was so engaging that I didn't fast forward and didn't realize that 15 minutes had passed until it ended and I looked up at the clock. The narrator reminded me of a Mr. Rogers for adults (that's meant as a compliment!)
You are right - long and slow - you're literally watching us figure it out for the first time! And, yes, I can see a comparison to Mike's speaking style as you described. :-)
You stated that you are not an advanced user, but let me tell you this: your video is a lot better than the one found on their website. Good job. Thanks for sharing.
You sell yourself short, this video was not boring, it was well done, very thorough and very helpful. Great job, Thank you for taking the time to do it!
If a baby was to watch this video a few times it would be able to use the tool...excellent instructions my brother...that was good presentation of how to
I've just bought a Qtech 190....and was hoping to find a detailed video like this for that. As it is incredibly daunting. The theory is of course very similar so i very much appreciated this video. Many thanks
Good video. My only 2c to add would be to use a paint strainer and strain your paint before using the sprayer. Especially with older paint. Also as noted with using an airless sprayer - you can finish a room in 10 mins but moving the furniture and covering up everything can take hours!
Excellent tutorial! I'm borrowing this tool from family so I wanted to use it correctly and efficiently! Thanks for a great video breaking down the steps for a first time user!
Thanks for posting this video. I totally agree with you on the two places aahe instructions that Graco should've included instructions in the 'next step' in the previous step. Nice job with the video. I have little patience with 99% of those posted with too much irrelevant information. Yours was spot-on.
Thank you for this video. A friend of mine who is a professional painter told me to get the Grayco sprayer. Wagners are a one done deal and they suck. This video is what I needed to get started my new sprayer. I have to paint the house and deck before Winter and then I have to spray a few rooms in the house and roll the high walls. I need something that I can use year after year. Great instructions !!
Video gives me hope. I have my sprayer on my dining table as I walk thru it with you!!! After a bad accident, rolling and trim just aren't my 'thing' much lately! Thank you!!!
If you are using two or more gallons of paint, "box" them (or mix) all into a 5 gallon bucket. This I'll ensure an even blend between all gallons of paint. If you have 3/4 gallon of the OG color, your color match will be slightly different. It's a different batch #, but same color. (Important to know when painting 400 units.) Always mix all your paint together. Do not cut out of a separate gallon, like the old color, then spray with the new. It will flash, or "picture frame". If it is a new color, there is less chance of flashing, but again, mix 2 or more gallons into a 5 gallon bucket. Boxing into a 5 gallon bucket saves time in the long run, obviously. If the job you are doing he's only going to take a gallon or less then, used to 1 gallon to feed from. Always remember though, the pump holds a small amount of paint and the hose holds a certain amount of paint, depending on the length. This could be up to 1 quart. Factor that in with jobs estimated for a gallon, you may get cut short, in some cases. Just some things to think about, people. Great video for newbs and the DIY types.
i just brought wagner 350r i brought for work on the side with in a month it payed for its self ...the key it 90% prep and 10% spraying the lines are so clean and crisp ... best thing i ever brought 👍
Thank you for this video. I'm getting ready to buy one to do the porch on our house and your detailed instructions were very helpful for a newb like me.
Just got this new toy myself! Can't wait to learn to master it! Thank you for this tutorial and I really like the personality of the guy in this video. Very calm, collected and easy to listen to. Except that he was a bit quiet to hear sometimes
Thanks for the very detailed video for the beginner (me) who is thinking about getting an airless paint sprayer. I did not think it was just "plug and play" and you assured me I do NOT want to go this route! :-) May take me a little longer, but I intend to stay with the brush and roller routine! Have a nice day!
Roger, it's good to know what you're getting into, isn't it? Going the sprayer route is good for certain projects and not for others. We really weighed the prospect heavily before buying as well. Glad the review helped in your decision!
While it's slow it was helpful to watch someone else go through the painful process of learning how to operate it. :) I bought the same model sprayer and used it for the first time today. I can see that I might've skipped step 6, because when I started spraying (primer) my garage door, for several seconds it sprayed a lot of water with the paint. I thought something was wrong, and it probably was me. After priming the sprayer I didn't go through the step of spraying into the waste bucket until only paint was coming out. And in a gallon bucket it probably went down almost 2 inches so I wasted a lot of primer, but had enough to do the whole door with a little less than a quart remaining. But it did a really nice job. I don't know how differently a commercial rig would be to set up, but to me the priming and having to have essentially 2 extra buckets, besides the paint can is too long of a process. And cleanup took a long time. I used my garden hose to purge out the paint. Another thing I should've paid attention to was how to recapture paint remaining in the hose. I ended up flushing all of that out with the water so I wasted more paint. But it's the first time I have used a spray rig other that a small one for shooting lacquer to paint guitars. Oh well, live and learn. Another thing about watching someone else do it is to see if they (you) experience so of the same things that I did, such as the motor pulsing on and off through the spray process. I think that's a little odd and might wear out the motor quicker than one that stays on, but I don't know if that's typical of "airless" sprayers. Suffice it to say, I need to re-read the instructions for awhile until I get the process down. I expected it to be simpler, like it is with my sprayer that runs off of my compressor. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I learned from it! One more thing to this already long thesis. I wish there was a way to change the width of the spray pattern without having to change tips. On my lacquer gun there's a knob on it that I turn either way to increase or decrease the size of the pattern. I can also adjust the amount of paint coming out to get a dryer or wetter coverage, and also adjust the amount of air being pushed out. On the Graco I know you can change the pressure but I haven't found a way to change the size of the pattern without changing tips. If it's capable of changing the pattern, other than horizontal or vertical, please let me know.
Thanks for the in-depth review and telling us about your personal experience as well. It helps to hear what others have gone thru! If you're anything like us, you'll find more projects to use the sprayer on in the future - projects you may not have thought of using the sprayer on otherwise. Happy spraying!
You were very thorough and didn't miss a step which was good. And, well done referencing the guide. Just be careful out there. They call it a spray GUN for a reason.
Ty so much, had to paint a big front porch and deck, this thoroughly helped me out, was not boring at all, was done at perfect speed to help us beginners out, Ty,Ty, Ty, God Bless you and yours.

This is the 2nd time I’ve watched your video, excellent tutorial. My first attempt is outdoors on my wooden fence, enjoying some beautiful weather & expect to give it a go in the next day or two. Great job, thanks. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great job thanks we used ours about a yr ago but now needed to remember how to set up and use it again and this was a great walk through ! Thanks for a very helpful clean walk through
We did not try a stain, polyurethane or any oil based paint with this machine. We did use a polycrylic (water based) lacquer on kitchen cabinet doors. It was fairly thick for a clear coat and worked fine.
Thanks for this video. I just got this on Saturday. I read the instructions and I don’t understand them. It seems way too complex. They say it’s easy but to me it ain’t. I have to see it done to understand it.
I a newbie in this, I prefer to watch curios on how to then read the instructions 😂. But I thank you so much for this easy understanding video. It helped me to setup my sprayer machine. Thanks
So crazy, just put all paint in a 5gal bucket (mix the lots too by doing this) with both hose in bucket turn the tip around (rotate around 180 deg)and shoot in the bucket to prime. than once primed shoot as light as possible on the walls. If you pull the trigger and see your paint just dropping in the bucket then your pressure is too high lower it, should drop at a very slow rate takes very little on the walls when spraying. To clean just run about 5-10 gal of just water through it and it will be fine for long term storage they sell some stuff you mix in the water on the last flush it kinda oily just flush good before next use. oh and you can do this on fresh green grass the latex won't kill it just flush with tons of water and all the white will disappear I don't know how many times a customer yell YOUR GOING TO KILL MY GRASS lol I tell them if it dies I will replace the whole thing hahaha
I bought one of those (Graco Magnum X5). Within the first hour of use, the power switch failed. I replaced the switch. While I had the cover off, I noticed that a wire that connects to a control module is poorly installed. There are two very small, flat tabs that the plug connects to. The plug has push clips that hold the plug in place, but there is no plastic part for the clips to clip to. I cut the plug off and soldered the wires in place so the wire wouldn't vibrate off. The main housing moves a little bit, so when I push the prime button, I have to hold the housing in place so that the housing does not interfere with the button. While painting, the sprayer would quit working several times. (Yes, I strained the paint.) Being brand new to paint sprayers, I didn't know if the tip was clogged, something else clogged, or what (It definitely was not sucking air.), so I kept starting over with it from the beginning. During the first couple of days, I spent MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more time trying to get the dang thing to work than I did painting. After the first couple of days, I got to where I could solve its problems more quickly, so that painting with the sprayer finally became time-efficient. You can find recommended sprayer PSI on some paint products, but this sprayer does not have PSI calibration on the dial. Overall, I highly recommend using a sprayer (I don't think I'd recommend this particular model, though.), but you shouldn't expect it to be as easy as sticking the tube in a paint bucket & start spraying.
Nice vid! I know it was two years ago but just a helpful tip ... When you spray. Stay on it. Don't use it like we were taught as kids to be on and off on and off. .You're not using the extension so that's ok if you want to stop but remember when you stop, then start again, you spit si at least be sure you are before subject to paint when you press. Now sir, it's time for you to by the XR-Pro Titan gun with better tips! no literally like the 311 and 619 and so on lol :-)
Spraying walls takes longer than rolling walls. We use an 18 inch roller cover. By the time the Graco sprayer covers one 12 inch strip, an 18 inch roller would have covered about one 54 inch strip. Spraying ceilings, crown, trim and base is the real way to use a sprayer
I find that a brush is the best way to paint trim. By the time you tape the entire room up just to spray the trim, you'd have finished brushing and had lunch. You can get a very smooth finish with BM Advance and a good brush with good technique. Trim makes it easy because you're always moving the brush the same direction.
I have one of these and on its first use it ruined my dining room. Set it up properly, set my pressure to where i had a full spray pattern. moved very quickly and only had a 25% overlap and STILL had a TON of sags and runs. i kept the gun approx 18 to 24 inches away from the wall and moved fast ( used to paint cars for a living). I was ready to throw the thing away after the first use. took me a long time to fix that room.
Boy, what a convoluted startup process... but I just bought one for doing my doors. There is simply no way I'm messing around rolling 20 some doors / closet doors in the house. I hope it ends up working well and then I have a very nice tool when it comes to intimidating paint jobs.
This is the first video I have seen that looks like my efforts my first time I used this sprayer. My only question I have not seen an answer to is what to do when you empty the first pail and the sprayer stopped in my case. Do you just move to the next pail of paint with the two tubes or do you have to start somewhere a few steps back to prime the pump?
This may seem like a lengthy setup, but it really isn’t. It’s not complicated, once you do once or twice, you will breeze right through it and will be spraying in minutes..
FINALLY in the process of the actual move! Check out the "Moving to Belize" playlist. Shooting for September 1 as the final move date. *fingers crossed*
Thanks for showing my kids just got a repo cabin exterior painted orange 🤮 since it’s a shell I figure with all the painting we will have to do getting one of these will make that project a little easier
A cabin makeover? How fun! This is a great option for any 'paint from scratch' projects. It's less ideal for middle projects like the one here ... Happy spraying!
@@GettinBelizy well it’s a bit more than that as only the inside framing was done before we looked at it I warned the kids to look past ugly filthy and gross as we were looking to make sure it was structurally sound so with that in mind only 3 things wrong 1 sheet of the outside siding needed replaced and one framed interior bedroom wall needed studs replaced as prior owner in anger cut the studs in half and when removing building they clipped a branch with roof. They are fixing roof this cabin brand new sells for 38k kids getting for 20k the move fee 300.00 to put on their half acre they own free and clear as that was a tax seize but at 500.00 so finishing out home will be a project but we can get it done as they save to pay cash ..one step at a time they are 18 and 20 and will have Home free and clear in 5 years with enough land to do another if they so choose

Gday mate, should I buy this airless sprayer or the wagner 350 pro? I'm a builder and would like to use it in my projects. Cheers
I have no experience with the Wagner 350 so I won't be able to advise you on that one. But, seeing that you're a builder, I would suggest you consider the Graco X7 instead of the X5. For around $100 more, you get a little more power (can run longer hoses) and a handy stand.

This is the 2nd time I’ve watched your video, excellent tutorial. My first attempt is outdoors on my wooden fence, enjoying some beautiful weather & expect to give it a go in the next day or two. Great job, thanks. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Glad it helped! Happy spraying!
This is a great sprayers for larger jobs only.
He literally had his whole housed masked off.
Thank you for you time 😃
Alway recommend RAC X tips, good slow paced video for beginners. Good paint job is all about the prep. Thanks for taking time to product a video.
Awesome!
If painting exterior, apply paint in an even coat then brush paint in. helps fill cracks, holes etc.
I've heard this elsewhere! Good tip!
This is great because it has a step to step guide and you put in so much detail
Thanks!
Thanks!
I just bought one literally 1nour ago . And. great review
Happy spraying!
I just bought one. This video helped alot. Now I can get right to work. Thank you!
Glad you took the time to watch the set up process. Thanks! Happy straying!
Great job thanks we used ours about a yr ago but now needed to remember how to set up and use it again and this was a great walk through ! Thanks for a very helpful clean walk through
You are very welcome! Happy spraying!
Thank you. DIY ers are awesome.
I'm from Belize and I paint also, nice informative video.
Where in Belize? Nice to meet you!
Very nice video. Thanks for your effort. I just got this sprayer for the deck and your instructional video is detailed and helpful.
Thanks! Good luck with the deck!
Did you use this tool with a stain/sealer? And how did it perform? Thanks
We did not try a stain, polyurethane or any oil based paint with this machine. We did use a polycrylic (water based) lacquer on kitchen cabinet doors. It was fairly thick for a clear coat and worked fine.
AWESOME JOB! Thanks for the class.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent tutorial!! Thanks; very well done. I appreciate you doing it by consistently following the Quick guide.
Glad it helped! Happy spraying!
Make sure the sprayer hose is tight! It loosened up on me when I was moving the hose around and leaked. Thankfully, it was in grass at the time.
Just used mine for the 1st time sprayed 1911 sq ft in 7 hrs 1 coat primer 1 coat paint
7 hours?? With sprayer should be faster😂😂😂😂
Thanks for this video. I just got this on Saturday. I read the instructions and I don’t understand them. It seems way too complex. They say it’s easy but to me it ain’t. I have to see it done to understand it.
Us too! Glad the video helped!
Slow and steady, with the quick set up guide, better than the manuf.’s cd.
So glad it helped!
Good job, thank you
Thank you , very helpful
I a newbie in this, I prefer to watch curios on how to then read the instructions 😂. But I thank you so much for this easy understanding video. It helped me to setup my sprayer machine. Thanks
Glad it helped! Happy spraying!
Helpful video..ty
That sounds horrible! Apparently, quality control on that unit was completely nonexistence.
Thanks! We did learn lots of tricks for better application as we went. It's definitely a learning process!
This is truly how a beginners video should look , great job
Thank you!
Thank you very much 🙏
Thanks so much for talking the time to make the video. It’s so helpful!
Great! Thanks!
That's terrible. Sorry for your bad luck. Very odd - haven't heard of this problem if used correctly. Anyone else?
U probably had to much paint coming out
Great instructional video. Thanks and hope your move to Belize met your expectations.
Thanks! And, our move to Belize *is currently* not exactly meeting any of our expectations ;-P
Gettin' Belizy Understand. Looking forward to more of your awesome and extremely helpful videos. Cheers!
Boy, what a convoluted startup process... but I just bought one for doing my doors. There is simply no way I'm messing around rolling 20 some doors / closet doors in the house. I hope it ends up working well and then I have a very nice tool when it comes to intimidating paint jobs.
We used the sprayer on two different cabinet projects and spraying doors is the only way to go. It paid for itself there alone. Happy spraying!
What a great video, Thank you very very much ,was so helpful.
Glad it helped! Happy spraying!
Thanks for this! Bought a refurb of this model and it did not come with the quick guide. What did you do with all of the waste paint/water?
It's very NOISY !!!
It is quite loud.
Thank you Sir
This is the first video I have seen that looks like my efforts my first time I used this sprayer. My only question I have not seen an answer to is what to do when you empty the first pail and the sprayer stopped in my case. Do you just move to the next pail of paint with the two tubes or do you have to start somewhere a few steps back to prime the pump?
It's my understanding you can go straight to your second bucket of paint if you lose prime.
This may seem like a lengthy setup, but it really isn’t. It’s not complicated, once you do once or twice, you will breeze right through it and will be spraying in minutes..
Big difference in steps based on what kind of paint or stain you’re using
True.
Very helpful. Great Explanation. Thanks A Lot.
Glad it helped! Happy spraying!
You guys are awesome..
Did ya ever move and what about work?
Still sounds fun! Good luck!
Good job mike lol
Aw shucks, Matt!
Thank you for the video. Helped alot!
Very happy to hear that! Happy spraying!
So in the end the paint is being primed and then sucked up and drained into the same paint bucket?
Great video. You should've invested in a quality respirator rather than use a simple dust mask. Breathing in that paint mist is not good.
dust mask works just fine. more than likely a water base paint.
We did end up using a good respirator after the initial trial run. Even with latex. Better safe than sorry!
thank you! This was a great Beginner's guide!
Thank YOU!
Unless they upgraded their circuit boards be careful do not overheated
Oh yeah? Have you had one overheat on you?
Mine does not have a purge button 🤔 will it just purge if the lever is up??
Thanks for the upload. A tip for all viewers. Turn the playback speed up to 1 1/2 or you risk slipping into a coma. Otherwise great video.
Not a bad tip :-)
Good thing I read this first 👌🏽
