The Battle of the 101 // I Learn a lot with this Synth

- The Roland Sh101 is one of the first synth I ever bought and, in my opinion, is one of the best one to learn subtractive synthesis. To this day, it has a sound that I love. I love it so much that I have 3 different 101s : the vintage original, the Boutique digital version and the modular counterpart, the Intellijel Atlantis.
In this brief video I will tell you why I love all my 101s and do quick , dirty an empirical sound comparison.
Enjoy!

Best response to "are they 100% the same" I've ever heard; A+, 10/10
:D
I love the SH-101, it was my first analog synth. I dunno, somehow it's just so mournful yet liquidy sounding!
liquid sounding! very true
Ultimately, only the real deal SH-101 scratched the itch of wanting a 101, even though the SH-01A comes with polyphony, polyphonic sequencer and chord mode, and sounds incredible. The MS-1 sounds great, a worthy analogue contender lacking the charm of the original. Great video!
thanks!!
Excellent work man! Beautiful sound.
Thanks a lot!
Looking forward to it!
:)
It's my favorite synth too! Juno 60 is probably second . . .
Completely agree !
aaah wish I kept my two Junos...
Can't wait!
:)
It’s funny how most of the early educational synths of the 70’s and 80’s sound SO DAMN good.
ahah also the guitars and pianos!
I really interested in Boutique version of SH-101. Reincarnated classic 😊 Thanks for sharing❤
Don’t forget the Roland S-1 is also based on the 101
Atlantis has something special about it.
I love it
G-Storm Electro have just released version 2 of their 101-VCO that might interest you. It's 12HP. There's a demo on the gstormelectro channel. Thanks for your vid!
I will check it out
We had a SH 101 back in the day, great synth… you could get an amazing frying eggs sound out of it…. I still preferred the SH-2 however.
yea the sh2 is beautiful!
101 is an unusual beast, I'd love one due to it's hands on and smallish footprint, just that they're too expensive here 2nd hand.
They're only asking 2K and that is the cheapest one.
That kind of money can but me some nice new gear so I don't know if I would ever spend that much on 2nd hand gear.
Thx for the upload.
I completely agree!
Hey man, nice work! Can you tell me where is that art from ? the woman in black background, I think ive seen it somewhere but I cant recall where
Thanks!
nice
Thanks!
Great stuff. A bit non sequitur but - have you ever used or considered using a desktop patch bay for various effects or guitar pedals? I've been looking into one and I know it would make experimentation with routing a lot simpler, but I'm curious if it introduces noise problems. Cheers!
I had for a while the bored brain patchulator, which was useful. I am thinking of something similar but more studio friendly.
@@OoraMusic I just ordered the DF Audio Patchwork. It seems very simple and not much larger than a guitar pedal but with 12 inserts on the back and 24 point Eurorack patching on top. Handles 12 pedals. It's got to be more fun than menu diving.🤪
Love my SH-01A. I have the Behringer MS-1 too. it doesn't sound like the SH101 but it's an OK synth in its own right.
Do you ever have a problem with the USB power causing noise with the SH-01a?
I do. I have 4 Roland boutiques on the same USB power splitter, then audio feeding into a sub-mixer. I had to add 4 of those cheesy inline audio filters to reduce the cumulative hum. It goes down a bit for each one installed, and it's still there but reduced about 90%. Annoying as it wrecks my color coded cabling scheme.
@@xyzpdq2506 I haven’t bought one of those filters yet. I just use rechargeable batteries, but it’s annoying to not be able to use usb power.
@@user82938 They really do work to bring the noise floor down, I was skeptical myself. I think they use optocouplers to isolate the interference, and with 4 it was bad..
I do, in fact if is connected to the computer is an issue. But I use a cioks power brick and is fine
@@OoraMusic I'll give that a try.
I'm interested in the Behringer MS-1. Any thoughts?
it no SH 101 but is OK in its own right
I'm surprised you haven't gotten an MS-1 by now lol :)
