Guys if any of you want to join the RAF. Honestly TRUST ME. JOIN THE CADETS. It will help so so much. Especially when starting off as an airman you will almost certainly fly up the ranks as so much of what is in the training programme is what the RAF requires for you to do. Join the cadets before your 20 and you will be almost completely ready for a job in the RAF!

Hmm not sure of that... I was in the cadets and can honestly say it’s not helped me in the slightest with my career in the forces. I suppose the only thing that came to be of any relevance was marching and drill, the rest of it truly is just a youth organisation at its core.

I attended OASC back in 1982, back then at RAF Biggin Hill, long since left the RAF, great memories !

Zach, when you apply for the role of pilot, you're automatically sent to RAFC Cranwell, as long as you pass the filter interview. In terms of a degree, though it will be an advantage, it's more about how you are as a person, and your leadership qualities. I suggest you visit your local AFCO and discuss the career. :)

If you've demonstrated that you're up to it, you deserve your Commission.

I went through the officer selection process 51 years ago at Biggin Hill after 4 years in the air cadets - father served 37 years in the RAF from 1929 to 1967. He watched Cranwell being built 1929 - 1931 while he trained there. Biggin Hill M.O. failed me medically (chance I might develop hay fever). I never did get hay fever... 😠

I'm currently doing my second year of A levels, and was interested in becoming a fighter pilot in the royal navy. I was hoping to go to the college at Cranwell and become an officer before applying to be a fighter pilot. I do have one question though, is it worth going to university and getting a degree in aerospace engineering before applying to be a fighter pilot and an officer, or not?

There's a bloke who works in our IT department who used to be a 'Rodney' in the Reserves. I don't think I've ever met a bigger prat in my whole life. You could be forgiven for thinking he's contributed to the RAF more than Douglas Bader...the sad fact is he's never seen a days action or operational service in his life and so many of these 'stolen valour' idiots they treat it as some sort of an adventure club once a month...taking vital money from the Regular RAF into the bargain. Utter pillock!

To be honest I came across ex-regulars who were like that..
