I carry bear spray the last year or so, after 60+ years of hiking/fishing/backpacking, not so much for the black bears in the areas I visit but the cougars that are rampant here (Oregon). Seriously, this is an award winning interview. Much better than the “intellectual” gun vs bear spray interview you posted earlier. Advice from one who has first hand experience, carries bear spray and handgun, see a bear get your spray out first, last resort is your handgun. Avoid creekbeds, tall vegetation, look big with bear spray in hand! All bears are incredibly fast. Had a grizzly cub run past in front of me in Glacier while backpacking before I had time to react. So fast. Thanks Dan for the educating video! Perfect, well done sir! Like clothing layers, defensive layers is also a viable option especially in troublesome bear areas. Another great point is that he was not outdoors alone.

    My first bear encounter was on a heavily trafficked trail during ‘turon’ season at Glacier National Park. A model for Eddie Bauer informed me that my granddaughter and I didn’t have to sing because there were so many people on the trail we wouldn’t be in danger of any wildlife encounters. I nodded politely and we moved on singing our songs. Not much further and a gentleman warned us he had seen a black bear but he had scared it off. We continued on, saw the beautiful,untainted lake, had snacks and began our journey back. We were singing away as we topped a rise and there, curiously looking at us standing on the trail was the black bear. The three of us bunched together and screamed and waved our hands. It probably thought we were aliens, but he decided to wander off. Needless to say, we sang louder and made the descent down in record time. People who know little seem to give the most advice. Don’t listen-be prepared.

Too often, the bears are coming back after being sprayed.....AND there are thousands of Grizs out there now. Thousands. Since I hike remotely, I'll probably pick up a 10mm for chest carry. The complaints are merited, because it's comparing to what once was. And still is in some areas, and in some private hospitals (which likely don't take your insurance). And also, it depends on the area. I've had to take a loved one to an ER downtown and we spent there 8 hours and eventually just left and went to a private hospital the next day. During the 8 hours we saw people give up and leave. There was a man in a wheelchair with a prosthetic leg, with nobody to help him into the restroom, I even went to the reception area and they just said "we know" and still nobody helped him. I'll just never go there again. You can easily spend 4 to 8 hours in the waiting room, unless it's a heart issue or a gsw. Going at night is better, because during the day you have all the people who use the ER because they don't have insurance. However, I'll still take this over the soviet canadian "free healthcare". There's a reason canadian politicians travel to the US for healthcare.

    Be advised if you fly to your destination to hunt you cannot fly with bear spray on a commercial airline either in cabin or in checked luggage. Be sure that you know of a place you can buy bear spray before you go into the woods. Also you can’t fly back with bear spray either. So best solution is to donate it to a park ranger or area office prior to heading to the airport where rangers conservation agents etc can use it for public demonstrations (with viewing public well out of spray range and upwind) or for the rangers own training on how to aim.

    @kodiakkeith Месяц назад +4

    I was badly mauled by a brownie on Kodiak twenty years ago. I blame Hollywood and TV, but even many very experienced hunters and hikers do not understand how fast these attacks unfold. There is no roaring or display, then a bear slowly lumbering towards you like Hollywood portrays it. That never happens in actual attacks. When they decide to attack it is silent and incredibly fast. There is no way to know why a grizzly decides to attack rather than silently glide away or make a threat display. When a brown/grizzly does make a threat display, you are 99% safe because the bear has decided not to attack. It's just warning you, so back away and you'll be fine. Biologists say the species can run at 25-30 mph and since they are ambush predators they use that to rush you from close range when they do decide to attack. I have no advice to give anyone other than to keep in mind that they lay up in thick cover for most of the daylight hours. If you're in grizzly country stay out of the thick stuff even if spoils a planned stalk or adds miles to a hike.

I've never been attacked, but been bluffed charged twice by grizzlies, and a black bear jumped on my tent when I was asleep. For the most part, bears don't attack - but their behavior is more unpredictable than pack animals due to their more solitary existence. Attacks are circumstance related. people always think a firearm but the reality is the violence, chaos and the unbelievable speed of a grizzly is absolutely insane.......hear it over and over how friggen quick, intelligent they are that you simply just dont have any time.....they can jump from 0-30 mph so quickly if you even have a few seconds your lucky.......not to mention their speed is over terrain a human would have hard time even runing across

    There are wipes that are very effective at greatly lessening the effects of OC sprays. It's a good idea to carry some, if you're in a scenario where you'll be carrying and potentially using the spray. Depending on wind conditions, and proximity, you'll no doubt frag yourself, so be prepared for that. Always a good idea to carry it with the safety removed, and it's either in your hand, or right up front on your chest. You'll barely have a second to recognize the situation, find and draw it, and aim it, meanwhile, the bear is closing ground at 40mph. And in areas where it's prohibited, it might be a good idea to think about what risk is greater: Getting an unpleasant interaction with a Ranger on a trail, or getting severely injured or past-tensed, by a bear

    Have to see it up close in person to see how fast they are. I was in black berry and polk berry bushes way in the mtns and 2 feet infront of me was like a small eruption. Within a second or 3 that 300 lb black bear took its head out of bees nest cleared 30 to 40 yards down the hillside and same up the other side. Was absolutely amazing. Looked at me then trotted on up and over the other side of the hollow. They're insanely quick. True terror. Never went back empty-handed, not that it could have made a difference.

    One must remember that the forest is the bear’s natural habitat, and they hunt for a living. If they decide to hunt you, you aren’t going to get much time, if any to prepare for an attack.

      @@user-pk5yq6qc5k that is certainly an interesting point.
      I live in NH and work at an Ivy league college near the VT border. We have deer all over the place here, but up at the college where they are totally safe ALL the time they will stand 5 feet away from you with absolute no concern all year around.
      Yet where I live 45 minutes away the distance of tolerance is much greater.
      Hard telling not knowing in regard's to the Griz.
      Thank you for the food for thought...

    • @user-pk5yq6qc5k
      @user-pk5yq6qc5k Месяц назад +1

      Another point to consider here - and that is, animals being habitiated to humans. In the case of the college campus, lots if humans, lots of deer - constantly - many of our bear problems here in montana, can also arise from habituation - bears being close to people - usually ok, until they are acting like what they are, predators

Then up came mama and reared up on her haunches scaring the crap out of me. I was in a 1968 Toyota pickup. Very small truck. I knew if she wanted she could get to us but she didn’t. 🙏🏼 praise God. This was below Balch Park in the Sierras. We were joining my husband and friends. Boy did we have a story to tell 😅

    From where he describes where his holster was, it sounds like he wasn’t prepared for a quick draw and fire. If you had time to raise your hands and yell, Bear! Bear! Then had you been prepared, you would have been able to quick draw and fire. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard of bear attacks when people are hunting and they’re simply not prepared. Most of them say the same thing, I never thought it would happen to me. I can’t stress this enough, if you’re gonna go hunting, then prepare yourself for that possibility.

    Great video. Im new to Idaho and camp in ID and Mt and this is a concern. I hike/camp with two dogs (choc lab and Rhodesian Ridgeback) which might help or hurt the situation. As retired LE, I thought pepper spray was bad. I know it sounds dumb but I wanted to see how bear spray compared to OC spray. I sprayed the bear spray in the rear yard and leaned forward to tentatively sniff. Nothing. I stepped forward and WOW. I didnt realize it hung in the air like a curtain. Good to know! I immediately couldnt get any air, it felt like someone was squeezing my lungs, my eyes were slammed shut and panic was setting in. Nasty stuff. I stripped off my clothes and ran to the shower. It took a good rinse to finally get clear. With that experience in mind, Im always mindful of the wind direction, and wargame "what if's" and plan ahead while hiking. If Im moving through brush/heavy forest Im making noise, calling to the dogs and have my spray handy but aware of the wind and may change direction accordingly. The 10mm is Plan B.
