I’m appalled by your lack of observational knowledge on such an obvious seeming detail of iPad as a product.
Weirdly, in the UK the new iPad Air is actually less expensive than the last model with twice the storage and a newer chip. So that’s the best value iPad for us by far.
Out of the three iPads I’ve ever bought (two for myself, one for my father) I’ve only bought one new (an iPad Air just after the release of the Air 2) & that was heavily subsidised as a bolt-on with a phone contract, the other two were an iPad 9 (for my dad) this year & an Air 4 (for myself) last year, both from CeX (a UK electrical & multimedia reseller).
Nov 2021 Walmart sold 13” M1 256GB iPad Pro for $699 on their website. It said Refurbished, but mine was factory sealed. Two weeks later the price was raised $250. Hard to believe they sold new from Apple for $1,299
You could honestly wait for prices to drop and get it used. If all you use the tablet for is movies I would just get a cheaper alternative with the oled display.
I might pick up the 13 inch ipad pro in a few years when I head off to college because as someone who is going into a music education major I feel like it is genuinely really good for my use case. It's large enough and clear enough to replace paper, it's thin and lightweight, and that flash feature actually looks INSANELY useful for scanning sheet music. Finally, a feature that solves a problem I actually have!
I've been looking into replacing my A12Z 12" iPad Pro. After I saw the price increases for the iPad Pros, I'm considering either the iPad Air or a reform M2 iPad Pro instead. Those price increases don't make any damn sense without a massive improvement to iPad OS to match. So right now, I'm waiting until WWDC if those give a reason for the increased price.
I got a brand new M2 iPad Pro for around $120 more than the M2 iPad Air. I'm using it instead of a MacBook since I work from an iMac most of the time, so whenever I don't wanna be at home, I can carry it easily. It wasn't the cheapest in my country, but I think that the 120hz screen refresh, the 2 extra speakers, the extra GPU core, thunderbolt port, and more importantly, the compatibility with the accessories I already have (Magic Keyboard + Apple Pencil 2) make those extra $120 worth it.
an apple pencil that only works for the pro... not any pros, the new pro.... that sounds soo ridiculous but it's true. respect Drew. Yes! The macos integration needs to happen
I'd argue shop around and get what you need, not what you want. Walmart and Best Buy still have the 9th gen brand new for 249. After that got on eBay, got a brand new Otterbox Defender Pro for 30 and an Apple Pencil 1st Gen working condition for 45. I also splurged just a bit and got some cheap USB C female to Lightning male adapters so I can use my USB C cables instead of buying all new ones. So for under 350 I got an iPad with plenty of life left in it and still getting updates, with the fancy pencil and can still use my old charging cables.
About 2 weeks ago I bought the M1 11 inch iPad with 256gb for 630 euros (that’s about 680 dollars, idk about taxes tho). Couldn’t be happier especially with those ridiculous prices of the new iPads. I have a chunky windows laptop for CAD and Rendering and wanted a lighter companion that I can bring around when I don’t need to do those tasks. And ever since I have it I don’t think my laptop will ever leave the house any time soon
Bought the 12.9 M1 for $759 refurbished from Apple last week. Very good decision since I basically use it to watch RUclips. Crazy expensive yes but sadly I got the older Air for $399 two weeks ago and wow. Once you have quad speakers you can't go back.
Making iPad very slim so the weight with the magic keyboard will make it very suitable weight to use it as a laptop when adding macOS to it, thing looks like it is heading towards that direction
I am a iSheep and always buy the latest and greatest but with iPads it seems just not worth it. My iPad replaced my MacBook and I use it for hours daily and take it on every travel. I had a 2015 12.9” pro since release and loved the size. In 2020 when the A12Z with lidar got announced, I bought the 2018. It’s nearly identical. Now, 1 year ago, as the M2 iPad pro was announced, I got the M1 on sale. Fabulous display. I keep using it for long, the M1 won’t ever be too slow in the iPad…
isn’t this the same for most tech? If you only update when your current one is getting tired or you’re ready to change, get the best you can afford to last as long as possible, and take advantage of offers. For TVs I usually buy a year old just as they’re about to change models is a good time to get a deal
I have the 2020 iPad Pro 11 inch and works great for me as an illustrator and graphic designer. More ram would help with layers but otherwise no complaints. To spend so much to upgrade I’d at the very least expect the desktop versions of the adobe suite to be on the new iPads. No point having an m4 if you can’t make full use of it
I use a base model iPad 9th generation and a keyboard case for a total cost of less than 300 with tax included. Doesn’t have pro motion, no laminate display, no mini LED or OLED, but it can play RUclips and all the modern apps work. More than enough for me and I feel all those features to justify the higher tiers is nice, but unnecessary.
I got a brand new 11” 2TB M1 iPad Pro for like $900 a few months back - was definitely clearance where I bought it in fairness (so you probably won’t be able to land a deal like that), but it’s a substantially better value than just about anything else you could get (as somebody who depends on not running out of storage)
These are some fair points, and normally I don’t buy new. I almost exclusively buy Apple refurbished. In this case, I traded in for a new 12.9 Air exclusively for the pencil pro. I do art and design on my iPad and the new features will be very useful. With that being said, I refuse to pay for the new pros. Just too expensive! I’ll wait a couple of years then upgrade to the M4 for cheaper.
Last black Friday the deals on M1 iPads were ridiculous in UK. I got a 2TB 11 inch for £800. The fact that even my stands won't work with the new iPads (get the case) due to the new magnets make it impossible for me to justify when combined with a new keyboard and pencil.
I got the deal of a lifetime last July for an M2 12.9” iPad Pro with 512 gigs, an Apple Pencil 2, and a Knock off Magic Keyboard that works great for only $700. It’s such an amazing device I don’t expect to upgrade for 10 years, especially with the useless changes Apple is making.
the 11 inch ipad pro finally has a good display, its been limited to the bigger ipad and finally getting that equivalent 1000 nits peak + OLED without having to go 12.9/13inch is nice
Craigslist has 6th gen 13” iPad Pro with m2 chips for 700-750. Luckily, my 2018 pro is getting the next update and works so well. I’m not upgrading for another year and a half.
I totally agree with the marketing thing because I bought a new ipad because of their ads and it turned out that I could have gotten a better deal refubished.
As an actual professional user for the iPad product. One of the absolute most critical features I need, 5G support, was downgraded on the new pros. I will be keeping my pro M1 chip with mmWave for a long while longer because I need the best cellular support I can get. I just doubled down too and purchased a second M2 iPad AFTER the most recent launch.
I think there should be only one type of iPad model and that’s the iPad Pro. And it should reduce in price each year a successor model launches by 100 dollars. So, the 2018 11 inch iPad Pro would be like 399 dollars The 2020 11 inch iPad Pro for like 599 dollars The 2021 11 inch iPad Pro could be like 699 dollars IMO, even the 2018 iPad Pro is better than the latest iPad Air in some regards, and it’ll most probably support software for another 2-3 yrs at least
I have bought every ipad since beginning, always ends up on the shelf within 5 days to 2 weeks.... Yet I keep buying thinking each will be differnt but isnt. I WONT be getting this one
Since the iPad has Face ID, I don't understand why it does not have an option to set up a personalized spatial audio profile. Even though it says that it is for iPhone X or later, they should have included iPads with Face ID.
Still rocking my 2018 pad pro 11inch. Just need to change the battery. It’s still fast till this day . Otherwise a good device and way ahead of its time when it released
In 2021 I picked up the 2018 iPad Pro from the Apple refurbished page. It came looking and feeling brand new! And of course, has been serving me pretty well for these last few years
I agree face id should be included in the Air but the price difference is notable between the Air and Pro line. So idk if I agree. $400 between a 12.9” Air and Pro is a lot.
2:22 - hmm, my father learned video editing on iPad Pro (CapCut), with almost no help from me, making home videos shot on iPhone, and his projects grew to the point where the M1 doesn't provide silky smooth workflow experience. iPad Pro proved to be the right tool, while i avoided even considering teaching my father the Premiere on Windows, that would be quite painful. For those creating, the Pro upgrade is very welcome. And it will be a bomb if they make it run MacOS.
Sold my m1 for the s8 ultra. Tired of ipod os. If you're in the market for an iPad just wait for the new os to know where Apple cheaps out on software.
I want to get a larger iPad to use at home and keep my iPad mini to go out. However, I don’t want to get the iPad because of the A14, my iPad mini has the A15 which will make the iPad feel like a downgrade. The M2 iPad Air doesn’t support my Apple Pencil 2, and I don’t want to get another pencil. I would love to get a M1 iPad Air, since it is more powerful than my iPad mini, but less powerful than my 15” MacBook Air M3.
I’ve got an iPad Pro 4th gen with the M2 chip and it’s not lacking anything I need. Absolutely no practical reason to upgrade for me. Honestly, it’ll be a while before I want to upgrade.
Totally agree, the new iPad 10th gen price and the iPad Air M2 are terrible buys considering that there's refurbished iPads that give you more for the same amount or just very slightly more money
Just recently purchased my first iPad after contemplating buying one. I decided there’s no point in a brand new one so I bought the Certified Refurbished iPad Pro 12.9” M1 for the price of £850. After getting it, I’ve loved it and laughed when they announced the new iPad Air 12.9” for $800. I also cringed when they announced the new iPad Pro’s thinner design as I find myself fearing my iPad will snap in half with how thin it is, and don’t even like the thought of it being thinner it just feels so wrong but I believe JerryRigEverything will have a fried day with this new iPad Pro thinness.
Don’t buy hardware for what you hope it might do in the future. Other than the rotation feature on the new Apple Pen, there isn’t much this new generation of iPads can do that you can’t do with the M1/M2 versions. In the unlikely event that Apple does ever expand iPad OS to be more useful, It would be a real dick move to leave those versions out. “MacOS coming to M4 iPads only… because… screw you, that’s why.” Sure, even the 2018 iPad Pro’s had more power than a MacBook Air of the Era, but there’s no WAY it could run MacOS, right? “M1 iPad? Nah, that can’t run MacOS” - Tim Apple
I think the 11” M4 pro is the right one for me. I’ve always wanted an 11” iPad and promotion. I plan on keeping it until they drop software support so why not.. Yes I do have a pencil 2 from my mini 6 but oh well.
I just finished setting up my new tablet - a refurbished Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra (2022), $470 got me the device itself, the official Tab S Pen, and a charge brick and cable. Hasn't felt any different than I would expect a brand new tablet to feel. Feels just as fast as my M1 iPad from the same year, which itself feels just as fast as the day I got it. I can absolutely vouch for refurbished tablets from a couple years back, my first hour with mine has been perfect. And for under half the launch price? A steal. Looking at Apple's top tablet from that same year, you can get it used as low as $760 that I've seen - not as deep of a discount, but it also has more years of software support left so it's a fair price I'd say.
Im glad I came across your video Drew! I’m currently looking for an iPad. Not a brand spanking new model just something to use here and there at home or airport for Netflix etc. still undecided tho
2018 iPad pro 12.9 is being retired today as I go get the new 13 pro. Hopefully Apple does something with iPad OS but I'm hoping the new pencil and screen along with hover are enjoyable features for drawing in procreate
If you can afford to wait, why not just wait until WWDC in less than a month and then make your decision? Either Apple gets off their ass and does something about iPadOS which makes it actually worthwhile for pro workflows on par with a Mac, or they ignore it again for the umpteenth time. Unless you’re planning on buying a new iPad Pro regardless of what the software features will be in the future.
Bought the 4th Gen 12.9" in 2020 and its still accomplishing the task of "streaming videos whilst eating" adequately, even with"only" a A12Z. Are those insanely bright, ever so marginally larger, displays tempting? Yes. However, Is it worth spending another NZD$4000 when adding in a storage bump, cellular & a new Magic keyboard? That's a much tougher sell.
When the M3 MacBook Air came out you told me to buy the M2 MBA refurbished instead. Well let me tell you, you were bang on! I freaking love this machine, it gets put through its paces in logic and final cut without breaking a sweat, and it’s just a pleasure to hold and gaze upon. And I saved hundreds of dollars to boot. Just had to say thanks for the tip!
Honestly, the only reason to get an M2 Air 13 inch is for those sensitive to PWM and therefore require an LCD Aside from that M1/M2 LED 120Hz would be the way to go
I want to update to the new M4 iPad Pro and only reason to not to buy is the money. But if I wanted to save money is better to not buy anything that settle with something half way. But I don’t know if it’s good idea to wait as discounts come later but those always have the base specifications and it’s hard to find the 1TB models.
I went with a refurbished M1 Pro. It’s immaculate no marks what so ever, the Face ID is a slight pain in the ass being off to the side when held in landscape but other than that highly recommended 👍🏻

So true, I probably had should my iPad also, catching dust for 2 years now, iPhone and Mac are just so much better in every way if you put the iPad in the middle you just loose time
There is no way I would buy a new iPad Air over an m1 or m2 iPad Pro. That 120hz, power, and ram, I use for everything I don’t feel like doing on my M3 Pro MacBook Pro because I can’t get myself close all of my safari tabs 😅. Should’ve went for that 36gb but it is such an expensive jump.
In place of the budget iPad I urge people to consider a used mac book, those 12inch models are now much cheaper, in India at least most of them are cheaper than the iPad 10th gen new from Apple. And being a macbook it can do a lot of things that the iPad can't and also comes with a great track pad and a meh keyboard but at least you are not paying extra for it
Hey, very logical argument but it is missing one thing, trade-in’s. If I trade in my iPad. The price of a M2 128GB is right between a M1 64Gb and M1 256 GB. Is that a coincidence? It looks like pricing ladder to me.
ye my 2017 ipad pro doesnt have alot of days left in it. the battery is almost entirely worn out and its just having trouble keeping up with all my drawings and 3 second animations. so im pretty convinced to buy the new m4 ipad pro this year. not just for drawing but really trying to make some high quality animations, i know that m4 is powerful as F so i think im good there. i dont think im gonna get the new magic keyboard since i dont use it like a mac, ive never owned a macbook in my life, so that will save me money there :)
and by the way, i will spend 1718 euro's (which is1853 cdollars) on my new 256GB M4 ipad pro because i will buy the apple pencil pro too. actually, over here in holland the 256GB M2 ipad pro in only 70 euro's cheaper right now and the M4 is even 30 euro's cheaper than the M2 was when it came out. so again, we should really have a conversation because what you're talking about... the US situation is only a fraction of the story.
Kinda wishing I’d seen this video before I bought my iPad 10 a few months ago. To be fair it was on sale at the time but it was on sale for 350 so now I don’t feel like I got a good deal anymore. Kinda wish I’d waited and gotten the air
I bought a 4th gen iPad Air refurbished instead of anything from the new lineup, aside from a newer more power-hungry chip, they’re basically the same tablet. Saved a few hundred.
I will most likely get one. I haven't bought an iPad in over a decade. I will get the 13pro 1tb. I don't need mac os but I'd like to have something like what samaung offers in their tablets like the dex mode. I will always get oled over anything. I do digital art and music so it works great for my needs. They need to get rid of the air title and just stick to mac book and pro same with ipad considering the pro models are lighter than the air ironically.
I completely agree with everything you said! People just need to learn how to be patient and wait a couple of months, it will save you hundreds of dollars!

@@Mr.Zen_73 Me and a bunch of the M series buyers. They both make great for the games they do support nowadays. It’s 2024, it’s been 4 years now dude, get with the times. 😂
Also iPads are literally advertised for gaming because that’s what the majority of iPad users use iPads for. I’m appalled by your lack of observational knowledge on such an obvious seeming detail of iPad as a product.
@@nylotical people who play computer games are losers - i prefer to make art instead 🤣
The iPad Air 5 with M1 is $399 at Walmart at the moment.
I'm still using my 2013 nexus 7, it's not an ipad but it does get the job done
Weirdly, in the UK the new iPad Air is actually less expensive than the last model with twice the storage and a newer chip. So that’s the best value iPad for us by far.
I’d still buy an M2 iPad Pro over the new M2 air. I’m UK too and I’ve seen them cheaper plus you get Face ID and 120hz.
Hard to believe they sold new from Apple for $1,299
oled is the only reason i would switch . watching movies at night in that grey lcd is horrible
You could honestly wait for prices to drop and get it used. If all you use the tablet for is movies I would just get a cheaper alternative with the oled display.
Mini led looks great for movies black is very black
Don't buy the iPad if you only want to watch on it. I purchased the tab s9 ultra instead. Also OLED but bigger and also cheaper.
I hope you don’t try to buy an oled professional tablet to just watch movies.
@@mrdinosaurproductions9507Yes but oled is even blacker than mini led
I might pick up the 13 inch ipad pro in a few years when I head off to college because as someone who is going into a music education major I feel like it is genuinely really good for my use case. It's large enough and clear enough to replace paper, it's thin and lightweight, and that flash feature actually looks INSANELY useful for scanning sheet music. Finally, a feature that solves a problem I actually have!
I buy my M1 12.9 back in December 2022 for $730
Refurbished all the way
I've been looking into replacing my A12Z 12" iPad Pro.
So I just keep my iPad Air 4, thanks👌🏻
I read that Pencil 2 don’t work on the new iPad Pro?
You read right😢
I bought a 11 inch M1 iPad Pro with 512 GB of storage on Amazon renewed for $700 about a year ago. I have no reason to upgrade.
Definitely would not buy a refurb Air 4 when Walmart has brand new M1 Airs for the same price right now.
the 11 inch ipad pro finally has a good display, its been limited to the bigger ipad and finally getting that equivalent 1000 nits peak + OLED without having to go 12.9/13inch is nice
Craigslist has 6th gen 13” iPad Pro with m2 chips for 700-750. Luckily, my 2018 pro is getting the next update and works so well. I’m not upgrading for another year and a half.
Praying Apple gives us a mini with oled and 2tb!
the 10.9" and 11" are identical screen size if you read the Apple fine print.
This is the most sane take I heard this week
I think there should be only one type of iPad model and that’s the iPad Pro. And it should reduce in price each year a successor model launches by 100 dollars.
So, the 2018 11 inch iPad Pro would be like 399 dollars
The 2020 11 inch iPad Pro for like 599 dollars
The 2021 11 inch iPad Pro could be like 699 dollars
IMO, even the 2018 iPad Pro is better than the latest iPad Air in some regards, and it’ll most probably support software for another 2-3 yrs at least
Same. It still solid.
Same here, just replaced the battery and now mine feels like new again
The implication of running pc games on a windows is running on boot camp running in a iPad Pro is WILDD.
I’ve got an iPad Pro 4th gen with the M2 chip and it’s not lacking anything I need. Absolutely no practical reason to upgrade for me. Honestly, it’ll be a while before I want to upgrade.
I just iPad Pro 12.9 inch 6th Gen 128GB for $750 at Best Buy open box came with Apple care til 2032
I bought an iPad Pro 11 ( 2018 ) refurbished on Amazon for $300 ! And I’m loving it ! I only buy refurbished 😎👍
Superb opening monologue Drew. No one imitates Tim Cook quite like you. Informative and entertaining at the same time. 😂
I just went with the 11 inch. I’m not trying to drop 1600 on iPad ridiculous.
I just bought a refurbished iPad Pro 12.9 M1 from 2021 256 GB cellular, which looks brand new for 859 € and it is just perfect.
I upgraded to Gen 9 iPad this year for $229 and it is perfectly fine. 😆
Honestly, the only reason to get an M2 Air 13 inch is for those sensitive to PWM and therefore require an LCD
Aside from that M1/M2 LED 120Hz would be the way to go
Just got iPad Pro 2021 11 inch with M1 for $620 from Apple. An amazing machine and I don’t expect to need another iPad for several years
I want to update to the new M4 iPad Pro and only reason to not to buy is the money.
Just ordered me a used iPad Air 5th Gen 256 GB today on Amazon for $519 because my 2018 iPad Pro 256GB 12.9 battery is shot now so i hope i made a good move
I no longer have an iPad….i sold it a few years ago. But I would buy a mini if they refreshed it
So true, I probably had should my iPad also, catching dust for 2 years now, iPhone and Mac are just so much better in every way if you put the iPad in the middle you just loose time
Sold*
My 2020 iPad Pro works fine in 256 GB and a12z processor still works great. Maybe in another one to three years.
I‘m still using my Mom's old iPad gen 1. Ok it’s now just a heavy but functional E-Reader. 😅 Battery life is still great after 14 years though.
the 13" Pro weight reduction and the tandem oled is reason enough. get mine on the 15th. can't wait.
In place of the budget iPad I urge people to consider a used mac book, those 12inch models are now much cheaper, in India at least most of them are cheaper than the iPad 10th gen new from Apple. And being a macbook it can do a lot of things that the iPad can't and also comes with a great track pad and a meh keyboard but at least you are not paying extra for it
Couldn’t agree more. I just got the M2 iPad Pro 11 inch 128GB for 599.00 from the military exchange so no tax either it comes in tomorrow🎉
Very helpful info. The iPads are difficult to navigate which to purchase if desire one.
I bought a 4th gen iPad Air refurbished instead of anything from the new lineup, aside from a newer more power-hungry chip, they’re basically the same tablet. Saved a few hundred.
i've had the first gen ipad mini, first gen ipad pro, 2020 ipad pro, i now have the M2 ipad pro and i'm going to buy the M4 ipad pro.
If they put the “old” mini led 120hz display on the 13in air, it would’ve been an insane value😭
I completely agree with everything you said! People just need to learn how to be patient and wait a couple of months, it will save you hundreds of dollars!
I bought ipad 9 for 175 new in box in marketplace a week ago more than happy... FYI air 5th gen is available for $399
