  • ‘Falling Into Awake Awareness’ Interview by Iain McNay
Author of ‘Shift Into Freedom. ’ Loch was a keen sports player when young. After one ice hockey game when he played in goal and made several amazing saves someone asked him how he did it. He explained, ‘time slows down, I feel open and connected, I get really quiet inside and it seems it is strangely quiet on the outside too.’
Someone gave him the ‘Zen and the Art of Archery’ book and he realised that others had had this experience too. At times he could feel exactly what was going on but wasn’t thinking.
He then started to investigate meditation.
And then one night when walking home from college and feeling an overwhelming grief as a result of some recent losses his thoughts quietened, his heart broke open and the weight of despair lifted. He looked up at the stars and noticed that his usual sense of self had gone, yet he felt fully embodied and alive. A new process had begun. Experience showed him that consciousness can shift intelligently but he didn’t know yet how to shift it intentionally.
He went to Sri Lanka where he did long retreats and then India where he saw the Dalia Lama who recommended he study with Tulka Rinpoche where he learnt Awake Awareness. Over the next few years he embodied this teaching.
He worked for many years with people in homeless shelters in NY and sees his life as a continual series of shifts.
‘There is no end to the mystery of Life - most of it is beyond human understanding’

This interview is one of the best you have done. This guy is the real thing. It made me go and start doing Loch's glimpse practices and it has been the best thing I have ever done. Thanks!

Just wanna second what your saying here, he is totally underrated as a teacher and I consider myself lucky to have found his work. I really hope this catches on and becomes more popular soon because he really makes this SO simple and intuitive and his demeanor is so humble and open it makes him very easy to listen to for most people I imagine. Namaste

This is a valuable talk for me in every way. It is years later - Sept. 2020 since this was video was made and I was guided to watch it as my dharma talk upon awakening this morning. I relate to everything this man is saying. We are certainly living now in very strange times that feel dangerous and on the brink of apocolypse here in Oregon, USA. Fires raging, smoke everywhere and couple that with a world that seems to be in the hands of demonic forces attempting to impose an authoritarian facist gov't here in the United States. Very hard at this time to remain calm & fearless. Thank you!

How old are you if you don't mind me asking? I can relate completely. Furthermore, I have isolated myself for so long and never really wanted to, or tried to make any connections in years. I feel that I am getting nudged towards reaching out for a social connection.
I am still in a fragile state as consciousness goes and have difficulty falling unconscious for days even if I give any attention to 'normal' media and unconscious people. So, what do you say? are we best friends now? Yes or yes?

@@DilbagSingh-ox8li It's a constant battle between the insane daily news and constant distractions. I have two young kids on top of that. Probably not the ideal life stage for liberation; it is incredibly ideal for coming into realization of the conditioning and identification with anything, everything that takes our attention. The world is forcing their food down everyone's mouth and the system is ramping up more every day.

The goal of all wisdom and religious traditions seem to be how to switch from ego-centric thinking - which is reactive/hurried, too passionate, i got this right, dont want to listen, divisive (me vs you, us vs them), and petty quarreling - to trust in a relaxed awareness that is broader and as a result hopefully more patient, compassionate, inclusive and accomodative of let me think, what should we do, are you feeling right about this too thinking. This relaxed awareness is already the one that helps us drive a car skillfully through a traffic jam, while as a driver we are cursing the traffic. The goal here is to get driver to stop useless cursing without losing ability to scold if needed :)
The appreciable effort is Loch has studied and practiced like many others but the key and welcome innovation here seems to be that he is able to distill the practices into a non-religious, non-traditional, modern setting based on his mental model of what is happening really when we say someone is enlightened.
I have only watched this interview and have to dig deeper, but this was a clear interview and balanced presentation. I especially likes the way he stresses on transformation without isolation - kind of Ramana Maharshi's directive. For instance he nicely addresses drawback of meditation (it lulls the mind, but does not transform your response - as in the incident on the bus). Advaita tradition clearly distinguishes between manolayam (quieting the mind) versus manonasam (removing of egoistic tendencies not by calming or by suppression or prayer but through direct seeing that it is both harmful, but unnecessary). The latter work cannot be done by the ego which created the tendency but the watchful awareness that is broader.
I do see that there is more logical explanation ernerging in modern teachers, to what is happening when a person enlightens and becomes almost too good to be true! but not sure if it covers the whole ground of literally losing the ego. Motivates me to read the book or buy a retreat video to pursue. Good person, nice contribution.
Prior to this era, when most of the time spent in family or local city, with almost universal adoption of organized religion in everyone's circles, people were taught to suppress or sublimate the ego with symbolic big God.
With globalization, rise of science and fall of reliance on religion, the religious way of subduing the ego was ineffective and lost too. Now , there is a hope that a rational approach to losing your ego is emerging with the work of such people.
Ramana Maharshi, my teacher for long, did a lot to remove the cruft of antique to cut through to a direct method. I still do not know the intersection between those ideas and this to say whether Loch's work is a subset of the goals of advaita or is better. For example, there a couple of claims of Advaita that Turiya is a universal mind and world is an illusion. Loch and modern neurology thesis seems to be that our perceived version of the world is a selected and distorted view presented by our compulsive ego - so it is a 'perceptive illusion' but not a falsity of existence. I am sure there are two advaita schools that say these views too. Similary. the fourth state may not be truly universal or ONE but in a sense connected to the turiya in others hence it is universal in that sense. (Universal in affect and access but not in content.)
I will study, and already feel good to come across this fresh air of authentic assembly of teachings and a distillation.

I have no doubt Loch is capable of experiencing advanced consciousness. But I also feel his ego is still intact & active. Why are we finding so many of these guru trying to sell us books & programs. It undermines their message & authenticity.

youre just projecting with your mind what it is that enlightened people think and do. You cannot know what it is like from the perspective of your mind. enlightened people are free to do what they want! No one owns enlightenment and its open to interpretation. I think this guy is enlightened. He describes the exact same thing as countless other people. People sell their material because they need to make a living in the bullshit society we live in.
