Nah, this way the difference would be way too small between the finalist and the winner. Also, continental championships aren’t worth as much because then fodders like Finn Luu and Nicholas Lum would be way to close to the top 20. Also, normally it’s harder to win a smash than a wtt finals because you have to play a lot more matches and against unknown players (Chinese or others) who could be freaking great.
That's why Africa, Americas & Oceania should be getting much less points than Asian & European championships. And it's not just about harder/easier. World & Continental championships should have a higher value than commercial tournaments. It's traditions, it's status. WTT has no traditions, it's pretty much a money-making machine. Probably, a temporary one. All these WTT [Insert Any Name] tournaments are faceless, because there are way too many of them these days. They make more of these competitions just to get extra cash and force players to attend them to keep themselves relevant in the WR. Great scheme. Just bring back the Open era. Less tournaments, every had more value and all the focus was on the big tournaments. Now they do everything to create the feel that WTT > WTTC & other tournaments.
@@TableTennisMedia I thought it's not about harder/easier it's about tradition? Did not stop you from throwing other continents to the sideline. Real expert in developing a global game here, handing Asia and Europe more advantages than they have already. Regional events should not be that impactful in world rankings.
Giving undeserved amounts of points won't help the game become global or more popular. Table tennis has gained nothing from seeing 4 Australians in the TOP 60. Artificial boosting won't grow anything. WTT does the opposite of global growth. It forces players to participate in their tournaments to stay relevant in the WR. But it gives no benefit for those mid-level or TOP 200, 300 or 500 players. They just waste $1000+ to get knocked out in first rounds of Feeder Qualification and get their 2-3 points for WR. Even a win in those low-tier WTT tournaments can't compensate all the travel/hotel/coaching expenses. In the Open era, it was more fair. Less tournaments, but also less expenses and more adequate schedule. There's already too much of nepotism in table tennis and current system will turn it more like tennis - a rich boy sport [except China, Japan and few other countries]. But with a difference that table tennis expenses aren't worth the investments. Or you believe that an average European couple will be super excited to spend thousands every year so their kid 10 years later brings home 300 euros from WTT Feeder? 😂
They used to have a system similar to chess where you gain ranking by beating higher ranked players, but moved away from this. I think that was a better system. You should then also add multipliers to big events such as olympics
The design of the ranking systems is intended to create incentives for the top players to participate in the top WTT events (Top players who skip top events also receive zero points). My sense is that this is based on the system in Tennis where the SLAMS count the most and there then are several "Tiers" of events. Tennis does not have "World Championships" or "European Championship". My sense is that we are seeing more frequent competition between the world's top players than we used to.
Yes, WTT system forces players to play in their tournaments. But table tennis is not tennis. Prize money is laughable and costs are high even for participation in lowest tier competitions. It only creates bigger separation between rich federations and poorer ones because there's not much money in table tennis in general. WTT is a money-making machine. Only thing that bothers them is income.
@@TableTennisMedia I understand and agree with part of your point. At the same time, they are trying to create events with more price money. In Tennis, most players also don't make that much money once you get outside the top 20 and players outside the top 100 struggle to get by. Almost all the prize money there accrues to the very top.
That prize money doesn't even compensate anything. It's like making fun of players by WTT currently. You win a Feeder, you get 300 euros... It covers maybe like 1/5 of expenses to get to that Feeder. Most players make their money by playing for clubs, not from pro tours and WTT isn't changing anything in this regard. Prize money goes to top players anyways. It's all just an illusion that WTT somehow has made some kind of progress or made table tennis better for upcoming players. Rich get richer, poor get poorer. That's WTT.
The stupiest thing is the restriction of players based on their nationality. It might not be sexy for some people to have too many chineses players at the top. However, in my opinion, they should be allowed to play any tournaments they can, if they have the skills required.
They're trying to WTA in tennis. I don't think that it is a good path to follow. In US tennis popularity went down a lot in the past 30 years. If you go to a tennis court, everyone there would be playing pickleball. If they would really want to promote the sport, they would have to do it at a beginner level. Otherwise nobody is going to follow table tennis if they don't understand it. Doesn't matter how many good players they look in a dark room to play against each other. Put some tables in parks so kids could play there.

And why did you leave out the World Cup? This is the trashiest idea I’ve ever seen

Liu Guoliang needs to hype up the WTT tournaments to profit from it. With him in charge, this will continue.
