My Uncle was the first assistant director on The Wicker Man, and while he does not defend the movies quality he said that this was the most fun he ever had on a film set. Nick Cage is Just super bizarre but hilarious (probably unintentionally) and everyone in the cast and crew had an amazing time XD So while I think the movie definitely does not hold up against the amazing original ( Christopher Lee as Summerisle is pure perfection) I’m still proud and glad that he got to enjoy making something. And that he witnessed the making of a great meme with the bees XD
So I don’t know if it’s been said already but just in case the ongoing thing with the little girl flashbacks is resolved if not in a very awful way. At the end when they reveal Nick Cage is the sacrifice to the Wicker Man some of the women take their masks off to show their faces. Three of them are shown briefly but it’s a child and two women. The child and one of the women are the ones from the car and the other is the female officer that visited him when he was in his officer sweats. It’s brief, it’s hard to notice, and it still doesn’t answer anything
I think it's basically saying that everything from the car accident onwards was a ploy to get him emotionally vulnerable enough to make him want to come to the island when he got told by his ex that a girl was missing, because it played off his feelings about the girl he couldn't save. I think. Why go to those lengths just to get bloody Nic Cage, I've no idea.
aim-to-misbehave That’s not a bad theory but my only thing is how did they get out of that burning car since it pretty much turned into a fireball. It still leaves a rather big question unanswered
Brooke of Hufflepuff House Yeah, I know. Showing them is confirmation that the flashbacks had a reason for being there (that they're linked to the main plot, that his trauma or whatever is relevant) but it honestly creates more questions than it answers. How did they escape? How did they know that they would come across him on that road, and that he'd pull over to give the doll back? Was the truck driver in on it as well? Like, what the hell?
That’s a very heartwarming thing if true, what’s the source of that? I heard Cushing was cremated but I guess the ring could still go with him when he was buried. As I understand it Lee wore multiple rings throughout the films and kept at least one of them after Cushing’s death, so I wonder which ring went with Cushing, if what you say is true?
@@oneinathousand2156 Lee said it once in an interview so idk which films he ware this specific ring or which ring it was. I just remembered how sentimental he seemed and how much he loved and respected Cushing.
Dead Meat I’d love to say this was me exaggerating but we both know I’m not because it’s, you know, Christopher Lee. Also, when Peter Jackson told him on the set of Return of the King to imagine what being stabbed in the back felt like, he said he didn’t have to imagine; it had happened to him during the war. 😳😳

17:51 "Flying one of those like water boats, the kind that lands in water" made me laugh so hard. James hatred of this movie made him forget the word 'airplane' and it cracks me up.
I personally think the main problem with “The Bees and Leg Breaking Scene,” is that it sorta ruins the originals terror. In the Original the fact that the locals treat him with care is terrifying. Just torturing him is boring and not in the slightest bit scary.
"When asked what roles from his career he would most like to revisit, Cage responded, "I would like to hook up with one of the great Japanese filmmakers, like the master that made Ringu, and I would like to take The Wicker Man to Japan, except this time he's a ghost."
Before even finishing the video, it earns my like because of Chelsea's Nic Cage impression alone! 10/10 Edit: Even more deserving of the thumbs up, because of the Christopher Lee biography and the twisted love triangle between James, Chelsea and James Franco. "He looks like he smells." "I think he's handsome." XD
Wish I could listen to you both talk about the original, I'm sure James will love it. Such a strange and powerful film. Glad Chelsea mentioned how good the music was, Willow's Song is a gorgeous track.
I just want to do a whole episode about the original, I'm in LOVE with it. James is even taken aback by this new love affair. I'm making him watch it with me asap!
I hate when movies use the old “there’s actually no bullets in the gun” twist. To anyone who has even a marginal amount of experience with firearms, the weight difference would be immediately noticeable.
I think the only way you’d notice that kind of weight change is if you are super familiar with that gun or type of gun. And no way you can tell if there is one or two bullets in a rifle or something. No way.
I’m digging this set up for the podcasts! I seriously love this series. I never understood why people like horror, but you’ve opened my eyes to a whole new world 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nicolas Cage objected to the criticism that the film was unintentionally funny, saying that he and Neil LaBute knowingly made the picture an absurdist black comedy and that it should have been seen and judged as such. From IMDB: Yes Nicolas, you say so.
It's hilarious how much James hates this movie. I've felt the same way when a movie is just so badly made and nonsensical that it overwhelms those "so bad its good" moments.

Great review as always, even if it melted your brains a little bit. I hope Chelsea's recovery from her surgery is going well and happy early 4th of July to you all!
James, Chelsea … I watched the Cinema Sins, everything wrong with Wicker Man (remake) and at the end when Nicholas Cage was being tortured with his broken legs and the bees… they show the Mom and the little girl in the car from the beginning .. are in the crowd! I don’t know if this is going to be more confusing but Cinema Sins hints that those two were part of the whole “lure him to the island” plot. I don’t know if this will confuse things more, but wanted to point this out! Love you guys, Dead Meat rocks!!!!

@3:45, James mentions how funny the movie is - and apparently, Nicolas Cage said something to the effect that he played the role as if it was a comedy or something and the director wanted a horror comedy, but the producers fucked with it and the final edit was not the original vision of the movie, which is why it makes no sense.
I was genuinely surprised to hear you guys are friends with Brock Baker, but that's awesome. I've watched that guy's stuff for years, it's great stuff.
Aaron Eckhart's break-out role was in a movie ("In the Company of Men") directed by the same guy (Neil Labute) which is actually a really good movie and as close to horror as a non-horror movie can be (definitely worth watching!). Both Cage and Eckhart have cringey roles...but the difference is that Eckhart is *intententionally* cringey.
Christopher Lee died 4 times, but told Death to come back later. Death apologized each time, and when Lee was ready, he called Death on his personal number to tell him to be picked up.

I was genuinely surprised to hear you guys are friends with Brock Baker, but that's awesome. I've watched that guy's stuff for years, it's great stuff.
I’d love a review of Grindhouse (2007) that needs some recognition
Aaron Eckhart's break-out role was in a movie ("In the Company of Men") directed by the same guy (Neil Labute) which is actually a really good movie and as close to horror as a non-horror movie can be (definitely worth watching!). Both Cage and Eckhart have cringey roles...but the difference is that Eckhart is *intententionally* cringey.
Love that movie. They should cover it as a horror
Christopher Lee died 4 times, but told Death to come back later. Death apologized each time, and when Lee was ready, he called Death on his personal number to tell him to be picked up.
She is so pretty
Shanelle Delgado like a little pixie. They are a super cute couple
You forgot to mention in the tangent that the original ‘Wicker Man’ was Christopher Lee’s personal favorite of his entire filmography
I don't understand your hate for this film I love one that it's a cult without being in your face about it and I also like that it isn't just straight up horror there is a story behind the story.
