Ooooooooh one of my favourite Videos of Manchester Piccadilly to date. Loved the 2 sets of 3 car 170s going from Liverpool Lime Street to Norwich with the new EMR Livery. One of my favourite moments of the video. The other being that set terminating from Cardiff and going to Swansea. I've yet to get on one of those as I thought they only do Cardiff to Holyhead and Manchester. Will subscribe. Have a good Weekend. 😊❤.
Well done, Les! You took the opportunity to do something, not the opportunity of doing something. That it was to do something interesting to me has simply heightened my joy! Carry on filming, my man.
Thanks John. Honestly there were several times I was waiting for your hand to come down and move a unit or correct a piece of the roof! And walking along platforms 13 and 14 without walking into the mill at New Mills!
Great video of your day Les. Always busy at Man Picc, and often get 4 trains in the approach at once, which is good to see, but can be difficult to decide what to focus on lol. Great to get a few freight as well!
Yet again Leslie, totally brilliant and a super selection of everything - can only think you are mighty tough, the cold getting at you and the neck massage required after all that head swivelling!!! Any management toff who criticises BR staff when you see the loyal hard work they put into the daily planning and operation should be re-educated!
Actually it was mild but the damp didn't help. Hats off to the platform staff on P13/14 which are as easily as busy as London Underground platforms. They were certainly on top of their responsibilities.
All those 197s! Interesting to see those trains that always seem delayed to and from Manchester at your home station - now you know why they can get disrupted!
Wow .. the variety was amazing. You need a wide angle lens to capture all the movements at one go… no you dont…your more than fine . A good day by the looks and for £2-00 cant beat it.
Hats off to the drivers who have to contend with that plethora of speed limits. I wonder if any train was signalled to Oxford Road under a GREEN. That's probably the best £2 bargain in the country. I bought a 1litre carton of orange juice today - and got 35p change!
Its amazing having to understand that level of detail. There is so much traffic down to Oxford Road and the junction with the new curve towards Victoria I doubt there's ever a through platform clear. 50 years ago it was a bottleneck and there were fewer trains.
Always a very busy station a lot of variety as well as you say Platform 13/14 is unusual in that blind people stand behind the yellow line and there is also a red line for everyone to stand behind.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways I used to love going here when the electrics were coming in all the time and the Woodhead electrics were still running so you got some DC traction as well. I think Manchester was unique being the only place outside London you got AC over head DC overhead and DC 3rd rail from Victoria as well as diesel traction. After Mr Jobsworth confronted me in Sheffield about the yellow line I emailed EMR to ask why the tactile paving, that tells a blind person they are close to the platform edge, is on the danger side of the yellow line, they did reply saying it complies with current standards, so it is OK for a blind person to stand closer to a speeding train than it is for the sighted. LOL. As for the red line I only recently found why they have this, and as far as I know only in Manchester. It is for train dispatchers to get a clear view off the train on the curved platform. A dispatcher I met at a model show told me that, Somehow they seem to cope OK with the curve at Carlisle and other stations. You will notice that on 13/14 the tactile paving is unusually on the safe side of the yellow line, but not on the other platforms.
Great collection, as always, but the first thing that really struck me was the woman on the announcements on the TPE 185s to Saltburn. Rather emphatic and enthusiastic. Quite a voice. lol Immediately after that was a great double shot of the TfW and TPE coming in. A couple questions- One would think the day-to-day traffic would be somewhat the same at a station, yet today there seemed to be a lot more TPE 185s than in many of your previous videos combined. Is that odd? Or, do you just get a vibe to film certain things more on certain days. ("I am in a 185 mood today" sort of thing)? Obviously, you were at ManPic in this video and not Carlisle, but it still felt different from the other ManPic videos. Ah well! Anyhow, thanks for a great mix of passenger stock today!
Thanks Anthony. It was a case of what don't I normally see! That and the frequency especially of trains between Piccadilly and Oxford Road which is very busy. (Also my Alma Mater , now largely disused, stands either side of the line there). I wouldn't normally go out of my way to record TfW 197s (Tim JD hates them) but they were there.
Northern took off the Blackpool Hazel Grove services in December 2022 which were electric. Now it seems to be totally linked in with the units on the Piccadilly to Buxton service.
The only through platforms 13 & 14 gets a lot of traffic. Quite a bottleneck. Makes the decision on where to position yourself easy. I went to UMIST back in the 1970s so nostalgic for me.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways No I wasn't in the transport society. After stopping trainspotting at 15 didn't get back to train hobby until 28 when I got my first house. I travelled on trains a lot though in that period. Trains in the 70s were superb, loco hauled stock and often a complete Mk 1 compartment to yourself.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways In 1976-79 Oxford Road used to have a couple of terminal platforms for occasional train starting there. If I remember right. Don't know configuration today.
@@alanrobertson9790 when I got there there was only one bay remaining on the north side but the through platform on the south side had been added for Chester services following closure of Central, I believe.
Hello from across the pond, Mr. Gilpin ... thank you for your videos!
And thank you for your support
Thank you Les. Yet another brillant days filming. Well done

Thank you! You too!
another great video Les, thanks for sharing🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thanks!
Some great footage there Les Manchester Piccadilly certainly best station ever
Thanks! Its a busy place - a lot busier than I expected!
Enjoyed this, especially as I have bit of a vested interest in this station. Thanks for doing this one.
Thanks John. Honestly there were several times I was waiting for your hand to come down and move a unit or correct a piece of the roof! And walking along platforms 13 and 14 without walking into the mill at New Mills!
Great variety Les, what a busy station!
Yes it was! That was just a selection!
Great video of your day Les. Always busy at Man Picc, and often get 4 trains in the approach at once, which is good to see, but can be difficult to decide what to focus on lol. Great to get a few freight as well!
Thanks Phil. I found myself focussing on one train ten fins another weaving across my view then boom its there in front of me entering the platform!
@@LeslieGilpinRailways haha, I know what you mean! Been there ,done that, in the same spot !
Great filming as always Les
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks Les. Please do few more trips like this if you’re up to it. You’re right . The variety was amazing. Cheers Andy from OZ.
More to come! Well the next one will be from the same visit, different town.
Great video Leslie. Nice to catch TFW loco haul stock and three 66s on intermodal. Thanks for sharing 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. I was hoping to see some TfW 67s.
Another great video Leslie. Hope to catch up with you in Glasgow next weekend
Thanks David! Yes I'll look out for you!

Went to Piccadilly on 24-25 January. Absolutely amazing station to go to if you like busy stations. Great video 👍
It really is! Busier than ev er. Thanks for watching
Nice stuff, did like 170208 screaming and the 67!
Thanks!
Nice alternative
Thanks
Fantastic Les. £2 return trip?? We don't seem to get those deals down south!
I should plan more journeys - but the very bad weather stopped me travelling on two. Thanks for watching
Very enjoyable trip to the smoke, good value at £2.
Glad you enjoyed it. Two quid for a day there was good value.

I know loco hauled trains are unfashionable these days but thoseTfW consists look very smart.
I agree they are smart
Always a very busy station a lot of variety as well as you say Platform 13/14 is unusual in that blind people stand behind the yellow line and there is also a red line for everyone to stand behind.
Indeed. As if bling people were aware of the colour! Still remember it for Class AM4 electrics going back and forth to Crewe.

Well done my good man. Northern stock look much better there 4han at Carlisle. I guess the older stock goes north to retire .
There were plenty of 153s there and even worse, still 150s! The modern electric stock is smart

I was wondering why the Hazel Grove to Manchester services are Diesel powered under the wires.

a class 67 doing a class 91 job bit weird they not have any class 91 for the wales trains
A 91 would have difficulty between Crewe and Newport though - no wires!
ahh yh wouldnt get very far without eletricity lol

Oxford Road!
I should have gone there, I suppose for the different backgrounds. Oxford Road's laminated wooden buildings are wonderful.

Transport for Wales have the ugliest trains…..the state of the track around the station is appalling 👍👍
Class 197s definitely are an acquired taste
Telephoto lenses make most trackwork look crooked but not saying you are wrong. You would think TfW trains should have a bit of green in them.
