Jims solos are a small part melodical but after that its just always the same lots of hammer ons and pull offs.... not saying its bad but I always see people say this about them while Mick is just as good at that.
Mick is faster and more technical (the PERFECT combination you'd want in a rhythm guitarist for a metal band.) Jim is more creative and better at shredding. Excellent combination!!! BOTH are an amazing live. However, I'm more partial to Mick's style of playing
It's like a ren and stimpy thing funny to say. Jim is excellent at finding creative outlets while mick is heavy and technical. If I could assume their background mick listens to a lot of heavy metal and Jim listens to soul and classic rock. There is no winner in this one. Together they make a damn good record on guitar.
Your assumption is correct. Jim hardly listens to Metal, and likes more jazz, blues, and classic rock, while Mick enjoys the hell out of more brutal, death metal, grindcore, deathgrind, stuff like that.
@@jasonbond1794 But it is. They've both said it in many interviews, most notably, on their 2014 Audiobiography. Jim explains how even though he grew with metal, he prefers more blues and classical rock, while Mick tends to listen to heavier stuff, like death metal, goregrind, deathcore, etc. You can even tell in their solo playing. When Jim tries out guitars, he does play chunky riffs, but also does a lot of time-signatures, jazz lines, tapping, and even forms of math rock, while Mick does more shredding, fast-tempoed playing.

BUT - Mick is without a doubt one of the best metal guitarists around, will catch me by surprise from time to time with his speed and power, and is essentially "the" sound of Slipknot. Mick and Joey seemed to mesh well, while Jim's style seems more suited for Jay Weinburg's. Plus, Mick has an amazing sense of humor. Regardless, hands down, the winner is the fans, who get to hear both styles feeding off and complimenting each other in one band.
@@alphabroncotwozero392 you cant debate some slipknot songs have them playing different riffs at the same time. And unless they are put head to head its stupid to look at clips where they are playing solo and review them as whos better.

Root. He can be just as technical as Mick (even though Mick is more well versed in theory), but way better at live solos. Mick drowns his live solos with wah and isn't understandable live. Root's fluidity is nearly unmatched and his improve is always great!

Jim uses more of a neo- classical type tonality with some of his solos with his scale and note choices, which I like, but they're both sick players that have slightly different approaches that complement each other and gives the band it's own sound imo. Josh was great too on that first album as far as riffs are concerned.
I like how Jim literally has his ''roots'' into classic rock, so his solos and riffs tend to be not so fast but still very heavy, just like Sabbath used to. Meanwhile Mick is one fast boi, you clearly see his influences, Death metal, Eddie Van Halen, 80's Thrash, the early 90's industrial metal, like Fear Factory etc etc. For my personal like, it's the classic stuff, so i'm going with Jim, but technically, they are both very authentic, original and very, very passionate on what they do, bringing us all the aggression in this world, mixed with the beautiful and peaceful thing that only music can be.
