This classic has been requested many times over the years. I thought it seemed time to finally pull the trigger, so here we go! The very first Final Fantasy!
You have years ahead of me in recording footage and a lot of skill. I upload playthroughs often but pretty much just for fun, but it looks like we have the same idea of making separate playlists based on console. Did you do every single one of these yourself or do you have a team that plays some of them? If it's just you, that's a lot of games and genres you're skilled at. Also for these really long ones do you ever have to pause then go back and edit out the paused segment from your video? I've been uploading all of mine in parts but I wonder if maybe it would be better to edit all of the parts together when possible. It's just that it's a lot of video processing time and when it goes over a certain time length, the software could crash.
@RickyRockstarTNS Thanks! It's just me, but this is my job and my hobby, so I can dedicate a ridiculous amount of time to practice. If something is too long to reasonably do in a single sitting, I'll pause the game, take a break, and splice the pieces together later on. As long as you're using decent software and your system has enough memory to handle the workload, stability shouldn't be problem for encoding longer files. I use Premiere Pro and Vegas Pro, and I rarely see crashes. In my experience, 64-128GB of ram makes for smooth sailing for when editing and encoding long ass movies in 4K. With 16GB or less, it quickly becomes more trouble than it's worth.
@@NintendoComplete I see, I think I have 32GB of RAM so this may be why Vegas wants to crash sometimes when I want to use a plugin to boost the audio for a 3 hour video for example. I had to divide it into 4 parts, boost the audio of each, then splice them back together. It could be time to buy a RAM upgrade. I just notice that when I have all these separate parts, sure it tells the story of the order I recorded the footage and worked on the games, but it also causes people to miss parts of it when they aren't using the playlists to watch the playthrough, but clicking on random videos. Some parts will get hundreds of views while some will only get 2 views if I upload too many parts too fast. For some reason, a lot of people really liked this low quality VHS rip of a Sonic CD playthrough I recorded in 2009. It has like 9,484 views right now and nothing else in the last couple years comes close to that viewership.

Thank you so much for playing through this game in its entirety, Alex. This was an impressive RPG for 1987. The soundtrack by the legendary Nobuo Uematsu was impressive for its time, too. It was unheard of for a Nintendo game to have as many as 21 different tracks playing while it was in progress. 1987 was THE year for Square. The company had finally found its niche, and would commit to making pretty much just RPGs from that point on, with an occasional exception. Of course, Square-Enix now does this job since 2003.
The worst part about this was that "Final Fantasy"'s name came about from the situation Square was in. They only had money for one last big project. If this failed, they would have been done. Similar is this story to that of Mickey Mouse with Walt Disney and Tecmo's "Dead or Alive" series.
It took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize the Black Belt was insanely better WITHOUT the damn nunchucks when I played this over 30 years ago. Kept wondering when I was going to get a new weapon in the stores for him, kept getting new stuff for everyone else...finally just took them off then next battle he got a huge barehand combo hit doing more damage than my Fighter. The other day I was sulking because you didn’t have a FF1 NES play through, but you had dragon quest and FF2 (US). So I gotta say, this was great timing!
Weirdly enough, even though I've played Pokemon, MOTHER, Mario & Luigi and Super Mario RPG, I have never played Dragon Quest or even the Final Fantasy games. I've played a *_bit_* of this one on the NES Mini and I've seen ProJared's reviews on most of the series and I'm aware of the confusing sequels (FF 2 is actually FF4). But that's about it.
The PS1 remake version of this game is by far my favourite Final Fantasy game. As generic and basic as it is, there's something great about it that the other games are missing. It's funny how when this game came out, it was one of the few games that came closest to replicating a D&D experience on a videogame that even some of the official D&D games struggled to achieve.
Here it is. The game that was meant to be a swan song, yet instead caused Square Soft to be reborn from their own ashes. It's a flawed game, yes, yet, it's a flawed game that people loved. And so, it layed the foundations for one of the biggest JRPG franchises ever. For all the problems classic FF and DQ had, they are games that made what we have today possible. If you like DQ 11 or FF16, know that their existence is only possible because of these classics, love em or hate em.
DQ11 was amazing. I don't know about FF16, though. They announced it as an action game and I immediately stopped caring. Then again, FF7 and FF9 were probably the last FFs that left me feeling satisfied. Imo they've gone steadily downhill from there. I finished 15 and hated it, but at least I was able to find solace in DQ. That series that still knows what I like 😅 Except DQ9. Wasn't a fan of that one at all.
@NintendoComplete Huh, DQ 9 was the only one I actually played all the way to the end. I still need to finish 8. I love ff16, mostly because I love the hack n' slash genre, and I had been play the DMC series even before it was announced, so I was really excited for it. I'd personally give 16 a 8.5 out of 10, those lost points being because of the last bit of the game, where they cram like 70% of the sidequests into the final chapter of the game. The running around and the purple/red tint of the world got really old, really fast. I loved everything else, the stories, characters and combat were great imo, especially the Eikon battles. I can certainly understand why some people were turned off by it, and for how much I loved it, I do hope we go back to more a more traditional JRPG style for the next game. On DQ's side, I've actually played very little of the main series, having only owned 8 on the ps2 and 4 and 9 on the ds, the latter of which being the only one I finished. In fact, I only got into Dragon Quest during the ds era, because I finally got over my childhood dislike of Toriyama's artstlye, (and therefore, Dragonball) and picked up DQ Monsters Joker on the DS. I loved that game! It was very similar to Pokémon in my young teenage mind, though I would later connect it more to Demi Kids Dark than pokemon, thanks to the whole main gimmick of fusing monsters. On that note, can you tell I'm really excited for the new Dragon Quest Monsters that got announced recently?
Hello there! I am working on a final fantasy video and was wondering if i could use some of this footage? It will be purely for background and may be used for a minute or two ☺️ I’ll be sure to give credit. (I’m new to this and don’t know if this is the way to ask, but i also don’t want to use without permission)
Comment Number 💯.6:51:52. You and I are 1 of the few players who go to Castle of Ordeal right after getting the Canoe. Despite a lesser lineup than yours, I made it through. 💪 Then, I got the Airship. Then I sailed to get the transformation 💪 early. 😊 After buying and releasing the Bottle 🍼, I returned to the Ice Cave 🧊 and collect all other items. 😊 You did a great job 👏
@@NintendoCompleteI recalled back in the day using 2 fighters and 2 red mages. That way you could cast Fast on both fighters 1st turn. And because of equipment, or lack there of late game, the second red mage worked out better than a third fighter. Oh and that 'One' section of the game where if your lone red mage got paralyzed...
When I finally smashed through this game, I went with 2 fighters, 1 red mage, and 1 black belt. At least 2 fighters just makes the game so much easier, since most attacks hit the first two guys. There's only one best sword in the game, sure. But it's the defense ability of the fighters that makes them the best. I threw in one black belt because I was told they hit hard in the late game and you don't have to spend a lot of gold on their equipment.
Basically, having a team like that requires more funds (gil) and there are plenty of enemies that can hit hard and have wide-range spells that can deal some serious hurt. The Fighters/Knights don't really have the best options (limited high-quality equipment in treasure chests) while the only spellcaster in the party (Red Mage/Red Wizard) doesn't have many (if not the best) choices or stats. I'm not saying that it's impossible, but it's a tough team to manage. Btw, "having a giraffe" is slang for "trying to make me laugh".
@@blukmage19typeR I know what it means. I haven't always lived in America ;) I suppose it depends on your playing style, but beyond that ugly grind that's needed around the time you're hitting Elfland, money's never much of a problem because of the equipment you find (I found more than enough to keep three fighters going through the end game), and the red mage's magic is the same strength as the white and black mages. You just get fewer charges, and you can't use level 7 or 8 spells, but there are a ton of unlimited use items that give you free casts of stuff like Cura, Lit2, Fire2, etc.
My first rpg game I was exposed to was a tie between Pokémon Stadium and Paper Mario 64. I am now just currently playing this game and it’s really difficult trying to get into it. But I have to think that this is what started the genre and it’s essential for me to experience it.
Many stories of why the game was called "Final Fantasy" have been circulating. One most recently-surfaced one is that the game was supposed to be called "Fighting Fantasy", but was changed due to copyright.
@@Xx1SailorScoutxX Yes, I've seen that. Though Johnny said FF II began the party formation change, when it began with the original game. Still, solid reviews of his overall.
Reading your synopsis of the game, not sure youre 100% on the gear that protects from status ailments and resistances. U Can Beat Video Games played through this game and when he eqyipped the Ribbons, his chars took A LIT less damage from elemental attacks and the Protect Rings seemed to protect from all instant death spells.
The classic RPG that started it all, and saved a company, possibly even turn-based RPG gaming culture as we know it. I still enjoy playing the original Final Fantasy, I actually find that it has aged surprisingly well, for the most part. Finding an airship for the first time, seeing your team grow up midway through the adventure and then exploring a sci-fi spaceship, fighting robots are standout moments.
If you manage to play through the whole thing with four White Wizards and spammed Fear on Chaos (make sure he gets affected on the first round of the fight), there's a chance that he will eventually Run Away.
@@mattalan6618 If only we saw more Final Bosses like Chaos just simply run away in a hilarious yet anticlimatic fashion in some Final Fantasy game and the party still wins, could you imagine the reaction on other people's faces if something like that where to happen?
@@NintendoComplete Long ago, I recall seeing one video on RUclips where one player had all four White Wizards taking on Chaos, and he had them do was spam the Fear spell on Chaos, after one of them succeeded in affecting said final boss on the 2nd time, he eventually runs away and the game ends in a victory. Its a shame that video I speak of has been long gone since =(
'ey, the original, back when the Wizardry/Ultima influence was still very prominent. Maybe not the best version to play nowadays owing to having so many strange bugs but I do love that 8-bit music.
Oh snap! The grand daddy of them all! While this is not my favorite but, this game is good. Also without ff1 there wouldn't be any final fantasy sequels period. So I have to respect this game
Dogi, Adol, and Darm... I see what you did there. Y's-hould be ashamed of y'erself. 🙃 gg wp! Things I didn't know when I played this (some 33-ish years ago, without the benefit of gameFAQs or reddit): A) You can visit Crescent Lake and buy silver armour *before* going to the Earth cave to fight Lich (makes huge difference). B) Castle Ordeals *before* Ice Cave... the Heal Staff&Zeus Gauntlet are *immensely* useful in the ice cave (the gold O and Ice Sword definitely don't hurt, either). C) Thieves (Ninja) are not worth it... just about every single broken game mechanic hits them particularly hard (The katana is supposed to have a ridiculous crit. rate, instead it has good crits, and numerous other weapons outmatch it). They're supposed to be good at running, but success rate of running only cares about the characters position in the party order. If you want additional black magic, better off with a Red Mage instead. D) Elemental&monster-type weapon effectiveness doesn't work.. the Giant Sword should be effective against giants, Ice sword should be effective against ice vulnerable enemies (if you can find any), but such weapon properties is glitched... magic spell elements are still effective against enemy vulnerabilities, as are *your* armour elemental resistances, but weapons are glitched (the Excaliber is supposed to be effective against all vulnerabilities, as if the crit/hit/damage wasn't obscene enough). All that being said, this is an amazing game... it calls for an explorational mindset that evokes a sense of adventure, forging into the unknown. (if you don't have a game guide, progress can be cryptic). you never see that sort of "no-handholding" gameplay anymore. Bleaugh, I ramble. Don't mind my nostalgia.
Con 3 caballeros o con 3 monjes al principio es difícil... Pero después se facilita un poco, el pro ring es importante para evitar el Ban o el instakill
My way of going about is to have my party right away enter the next dungeon, raid the next treasure chest or treasure room, retreat to the nearest village, purchase some upgrades, rest at the inn, and then repeat that process untill that dungeon is through. It does get a little risky but is a much more fun experience than circling around for level grinding.
Im playing through this with pixel remaster and glad i chose pixel remaster version :). And also, i grow up with Sega and Phantasy Star. Comparing Phantasy star 1 and Final Fantasy 1 i realize how far ahead Phantasy star 1 was at that time.
I've beaten the game on wii from the eshop in the mid 2010s. AND with only 1 red warrior (and black belt, black mage, and white mage). Even then, it still felt pretty epic on a big flat-screen tv.
Only advantage White Mage has over Red Mage is access to Cure 4 and Life 2 (Dia is only effective against undead while Fire does extra damage to undead AND effects other mobs).
I really hope this game will one day be adapted into a proper movie, CGI or live-action. Not the garbage dump that was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. There is a potential for a great 2-2.5 hour epic movie that could be made from the first game.
Later on in this game some monsters are just unfair and you are lucky to win at times. The what gargoyles that can stone you are really really hard if enough show up. Doesn't matter how powerful you are too.

OH BTW..HOW HIGH DID THIS GAME GO?
If you manage to play through the whole thing with four White Wizards and spammed Fear on Chaos (make sure he gets affected on the first round of the fight), there's a chance that he will eventually Run Away.
i had that happen to me. it took awhile but i was playing on emulator and used save states
@@mattalan6618 If only we saw more Final Bosses like Chaos just simply run away in a hilarious yet anticlimatic fashion in some Final Fantasy game and the party still wins, could you imagine the reaction on other people's faces if something like that where to happen?
That's bizarre. I had no idea.
Its a shame that video I speak of has been long gone since =(
You used 3 fighters? Kind of crazy, but whatever suits you best.
'ey, the original, back when the Wizardry/Ultima influence was still very prominent. Maybe not the best version to play nowadays owing to having so many strange bugs but I do love that 8-bit music.
Have you seen the MSX2 version? It has choppy scrolling, but the graphics and music are a really nice upgrade to this version's.
Haven't tried that one. I'll have to check it out!@@NintendoComplete
Oh snap! The grand daddy of them all! While this is not my favorite but, this game is good. Also without ff1 there wouldn't be any final fantasy sequels period. So I have to respect this game
Even the most basic of their games has:
that music
11 hours of gameplay (NES GAME!)
How are you able to play through and know everything you need to do and not die even once do you practice the game first or what?
Yeah, I've played it many times over the years, and I gave it a run-through taking careful notes before I sat down to record the video.
Out of curiosity, is this the strongest party config to play with? I'm a bit curious the logic of 3 fighters + 1 Red Mage vs other configs.
I don’t know what the strongest party is, but my favorite is Fighter, Black Belt, White Mage, Black Mage
Dogi, Adol, and Darm... I see what you did there. Y's-hould be ashamed of y'erself. 🙃
gg wp!
Things I didn't know when I played this (some 33-ish years ago, without the benefit of gameFAQs or reddit):
A) You can visit Crescent Lake and buy silver armour *before* going to the Earth cave to fight Lich (makes huge difference).

Receive Item Theme.
What NES emulator are you using?
Oh freekin yeah
Masterpiece
Con 3 caballeros o con 3 monjes al principio es difícil... Pero después se facilita un poco, el pro ring es importante para evitar el Ban o el instakill
My way of going about is to have my party right away enter the next dungeon, raid the next treasure chest or treasure room, retreat to the nearest village, purchase some upgrades, rest at the inn, and then repeat that process untill that dungeon is through. It does get a little risky but is a much more fun experience than circling around for level grinding.
Like what the hell? I was just watching your FF7 nes longplay and here you are.
Ah yeah, that game was a real trip.
27:09 LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, Let us all arise for our national anthem.
My party of choice is Fighter/Thief/White Mage/Black Mage. I like to have a balance of physical attacks and magic spells.
Only advantage White Mage has over Red Mage is access to Cure 4 and Life 2 (Dia is only effective against undead while Fire does extra damage to undead AND effects other mobs).
Thief is useless. I understand maybe wanting the two mages, but you have to go with the Black Belt in the second slot.
Classic...
i ff towards the warmech possible area...
11:02:40 you did it!
Bro I don't know if I can do this.....
next game do Gradius on NES thank you my friend
They called it final fantasy because square thought it would be their last game
I really hope this game will one day be adapted into a proper movie, CGI or live-action. Not the garbage dump that was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. There is a potential for a great 2-2.5 hour epic movie that could be made from the first game.
Later on in this game some monsters are just unfair and you are lucky to win at times. The what gargoyles that can stone you are really really hard if enough show up. Doesn't matter how powerful you are too.
This looks and feels just like the Pokémon blue / red version games
One year later I come here to call you weak for playing with 3 knights and 1 red mage
27:08
You never use heal or pure potions enough, and you don't fight the ones that can paralyze you 1st.
👍

i love this game but i always found it hard to pick my team
