I think you chose one of the hardest prey to bag right off the go, but the fact you stayed with it would foreshadow what kind of hunter you would be.. dedicated patient. Thanks for the trip with you and companions.

In my opinion there is no better wild game than ruffed grouse. Growing up in the far north east of NY my childhood was filled with great grouse hunting. The most challenging of hunting I've had the pleasure to have.

I always had setters and hunting grouse with them were some of the best moments of my life. I had great dogs that I killed over 40 grouse per year over many years and that is in Virginia. I had grouse around my home in the woods but something seems to have destroyed the grouse population here. There are still a few grouse in the mountains here but most are gone and the quail are completely gone. Hunters did not kill them all, lack of habitat and predators have destroyed most of them. The ruffed grouse is the greatest bird ever. I started hunting them without a dog at 8 years old. They were around my parent's home and there were so many that they sometimes flew into garages and into the side of homes. If I could go back to those times I would leave immediately with no regrets. I would love to have another setter like the one pictured here. All my dogs lived in the house with me. I would have it no other way.

I can't tell you how many partridge I shot at with an old bolt .410 before I hit one. Walking old apple orchards, edge growth, snowshoeing through the alders. Love the video of you and your dogs. Thanks

Shooting partridge seemed almost impossible at first.

Grew up Grouse hunting in Eastern Kentucky..Learned to drive driving a jeep in the mountains at age 11. Best seasons ever we killed over 120 a year two years running...We didn't even put a dent in them...Its hard hunting in the mountains and easy to walk 20 miles a day.

Miss hunting theses birds. If someone want a real challenge. Hunt these birds . You will have your skills tested. Better then Pheasant hunting.

Probably Mushers Secret, It helps to minimize snowballs between the pads of the foot.

I have shot hundreds of roughed and spruce grouse in my life. None were flying. They are all always on the ground or perched up in a tree.
