Except that in reality Bret was the worst drawing WWF Champion of the 90's, who still holds the distinction of headlining the worst drawing WWF PPV of all time and drawing the lowest crowds at the MSG, Meadowlands, Maple Leaf Garden and Saddledome (that's in Calgary, btw) of ANY WWE Champion in the entire history of the promotion.
And then he debuts on Nitro and the show overall does 0.5 less in the ratings than the previous episode and the quarter rating for his debut shows that people were actively changing the channel.
Gee, i wonder why WCW didn't do much with him. Maybe because he never drew a fucking dime and was utterly worthless, to the point were all the moment of the Screwjob instantly vaporized?

I think a lot of it is Bret keeps getting asked the same questions over and over and it brings the emotions back to the surface. Bischoff should be able to relate, as every time he’s asked about Hart (or Russo or Cornette or any number of other talent he’s worked with that ended poorly) he clearly has to work through his own negative emotions. Kind of a vicious cycle that is an unfortunate byproduct of these never ending shoot interviews.

There is always risk in wrestling, and very few people walk away from the business in good shape, much less live past the age of 50....let alone even have money in the bank to retire.
Owen's tragic accident is sad, but just about everyone has someone in their life that they lost far too early to unnatural circumstances. Let's not forget that when Bret met with Vince soon after the event, Bret's focus of the conversation was about getting the rights to video likeness of himself (Bret). Vince allegedly secretly taped the conversation.
As far as his marriage falling apart, that's on Bret. His justifies his infidelity in his autobiography, and seems to be very proud of himself any time he was able to hook up, like it's some noble achievement.
Fact of the matter is, Bret doesn't have anything to give, or at least doesn't want to. It's left him in a state where he just reflects upon his career and stews about every bad thing that happened to him, as if he didn't have agency in his own actions.

Without Vince, Bret would have no legacy. I don't agree with a lot of the ethical/business decisions Vince has made over the years, but Vince is the most important man in wrestling history. As far as the Montreal screw-job and Bret dropping the title, Vince probably could have handled it differently, but I can't really blame him for that. Bret's unwillingness to drop the title to Shawn when he's on his way out was ethically wrong against wrestling tradition.

Hart had an express term in his WWF contract which gave him “reasonable”creative control for his final 30 days if he ever left the company.
He proposed several different solutions for dropping the title before leaving- which would be considered ‘reasonable’ in the legal sense.
McMahon already breached Hart’s contract and then ignored the specific creative control term (breaching AGAIN) because his intent was to fuck Hart up before he left for WCW.
Contracts, laws and regulations won’t stop McMahon!

Bret suffers from some mental health problem. That's obvious. I'm not an expert so I can't say which, but it seems like some type of Bipolar Disorder. Bret can openly praise and gush about someone in one interview, and a few days later totally roast that person and say that same person is the scum of the Earth.
I think that is why most people don't take what he says seriously when he is dragging them.
In Eric's defense, Bret is not ignorant to how the business works. He's the son of Stu Hart who ran a successful federation for decades, and was Vince's right hand man for 5 years. Anyone that close to Vince knows everything about how management works in this business. Bret just wants things HIS way and when it doesn't go HIS way, he loses it. The crazy thing is in my opinion Bret's first year was pretty impressive considering how overbooked WCW was at that time, just think how big guys like Sting, DDP, Goldberg, Nash, among others were getting at that time when two NWO factions were happening. He got to be involved in the Starrcade '97 main event, his first match at a payperview the following month was beating THE MAN Ric Flair, the following payperview Hart got to work with and beat one of his most respected opponents Curt Hennig, same a couple months later with Randy Savage, then main event more than one payperview over the following months (Great American Bash, Fall Brawl) while elevating the US title higher than it had been for a long while.
Other often forgotten facts in 1998, Bret FINALLY got a match with Hogan on a Nitro (which he didn't lose!) and beat Sting (face of the franchise!) at Halloween Havoc, then got to finish '98 working with one of the company's top names in Dallas as he closed that first year US Champion. Thst whole first year he was front and center working with most of the company's top names.
Other than making Bret's character a bit bipolar with his vague ties to the NWO throughout Spring-Autumn of '98 I personally think that first year was very impressive for him, pretty much the ONLY two remarkable things he didn't do were win the World title and actually beat Hulk... but in my opinion he didn't NEED those acolytes. To me personally the only time his career felt mediocre in WCW were the early months in '99 prior to his "steel plate" promo with Goldberg.

Bret is right about almost everything - as is Eric. This is one the few times Eric is being obtuse. From day 1… special referee Bret Hart?? lol. You took a guy whose entire gimmick is great wrestling… and decided his debut should be… not wrestling. Making Bret a HUGE PLAYER in wcw would have been so absurdly easy. Have him come out and cut a first promo - about the clown show nwo… and how much he hates all of them, especially hogan. Short and sweet… realistic… and then have him announce that one by one he’s going to defeat and humiliate every single one of them in the ring - because they’re too busy partying and posing to remember what pro wrestling actually is. Then have Bret storm through the lower ranks, putting on technical exhibitions and submitting the low level nwo guys. Then one or two top ones. Now you have so many instant feuds storylines setup with the top nwo guys. It’s a no brainer and people would have loved it. It requires no character change for Bret. In fact he’s best in promos where he keeps it real and simply says he’s the best wrestler. You could kill 3 years with him against the top nwo guys alone. Meanwhile nwo finally has a serious credible threat that. Wcw has a defender. Its extends the nwo lifespan too. Nobody could outmuscle or out-cool the nwo - and they had everyone in it! But they could be outwrestled by a Bret Hart. Coudl have had Benoit and others join him. Now it’s the cool kids vs the jocks…. A real battle.

There can even be internal friction: maybe some are afraid, some guys are ducking him - (maybe Hogan), maybe some are getting injured or taking repeated losses - “why the hell aren’t YOU going out there?” A guy like Steiner who wants to be the top dog and who is a big threat in the ring, maybe holds back, then after months finally steps up: looks like the real alpha male has to stop the pink boy. Honestly, If I gave it some thought maybe can come up with something really good, but even these very obvious angles that I make up as I frantically write this are fine! It writes itself lol! Maybe Luger after losing to Bret a couple times, remembers just how much he respected Bret before and realizes he’s sick of being nwo. Maybe x pac (can’t remember if he’s around a this point lol) or savage also becomes respectful of Bret and the others start questioning his loyalty, while he starts getting resentful that they expect him to match Bret. From a humanistic standpoint...I believe Bret never wanted to leave WWE, but he knew they were losing ground to WCW and probably felt he had done all there was to do in WWE. It was easier for Vince to let him go because of that, and because he still had HBK. Then the Montreal Screwjob happened and it made Bret's departure even worse for WWE, but good for WCW. It was no secret that Bret was leaving for WCW. But this is probably the momentum and potential for multiple storylines that WCW didn't take advantage of. I think it all started with Bret's debut, during a Nitro? And being introduced as the guest referee or enforcer, or whatever role he had. His debut was lacklaster, his new theme music sucked, and it was kind of just like, meh. The problem was, Bret went to the hottest wrestling organization during the time. WCW had EVERYONE! Hogan, Sting, Flair, Hall, Nash, their cruiserweights, NWO, Goldberg, even Bobby the Brain and Mean Gene. Bret was a traditionalist, he prioritized the wrestler, and the storytelling, and the art of doing both. Bischoff and WCW wasn't about that. They were making money and trying to put WWE out of business. They did it with star power, but aside from the NWO storyline, they had nothing else. And when that storyline fizzled out, they had nothing to fall back on. WCW wrestlers started seeing the new WWE product. Chris Jericho's amazing debut in 1999, the Radikalz, everyone started jumping ship to WWE. But back to Bret....when he went to WCW, it was not his forte. It was like sending Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, or Robert DeNiro (3 of the greatest actors ever) to do movies for a local community college film class. Bret was paid huge, but misused. But it wasn't all Eric's fault. Eric had too many top stars (especially Hogan) pressuring him from all angles. While all this was happening, WWE was on its way to becoming the juggernaut that it is now through the Attitude Era. Enter Stone Cold and The Rock....it was all downhill for WCW when that happened. Eric is the 2nd most influential wrestling personality in the sport, behind Vince. I loved watching WCW and what he did to revolutionize the industry. There were just too many hands in the cookie jar, too many egos, too much talent and not enough television time.

In terms of that psychologist finding out why we watch wrestling, it's more than conflict and resolution. It's a way to let your freak flag fly. If you go to a supermarket, you can't walk around shirtless, yell at the customers, or throw the clerk into the shelves. But in wrestling, not only is that behavior acceptable, it's expected.

How would you book Bret after survivor series 1997? The Sting and Hogan feud was coming to a conclusion so maybe it would have been better to bring him in the following year in January 1998...

W.C.W. was walking on a "Goldmine." Bret should have ended Goldberg's streak, Bret should have defeated Hogan cleanly, Bret should have headed a Stable, Bret should have wrestled a lot of other great wrestlers like Booker-T, what Eric Bischoff is leaving out is a lot of wrestlers had Political Power, due to Bischoff's obsession with getting the big names, and ultimately, even though the aftermath of the Screw Job could have fool proof catapulted Bret to the top, too much Political Power was at play.

As a fan from the outset I can say that WCW was the Hulk Hogan Show. I can tell he had you under the thumb because of his creative clause and you may have been afraid to lose him given the business you pulled in during the NWO.
Yes, creatively a number of young WCW stars were misused including those that came from WWE like Bret because WCW had no idea how to use that talent, the same way Vince never knew how to use WCW talent in WWE at the time.
Considering, that everybody is trying to move forward. Bret needs to drop this bag of rocks in relation to WCW and Goldberg. It is what it is. You can't go back and change things. The only way now is to move forward and just let bygones by bygones. A lot of Bret's bitterness comes from self projection due to the tragic events that have traumatised him.

    • @Bernicia295

Also a lot of Bret's 'bitterness' comes from people asking him the same questions about WCW and Goldberg over and over again then reporting on his negative comments while ignoring the positive ones he makes.

I don't understand all these "Why is Brett angry videos". It's obvious why he's angry. His dad's company was stolen from him. The business he grew up in and loved was completely destroyed by suits like you trying to make money off of his work. His brother was killed and his brain got damaged. It's insane that people have to ask why he's bitter. Nobody on Earth deserves to be bitter like Bret Hart does

    • @Bernicia295

I agree completely! I think some people are just incapable of putting themselves in someone else's shoes and thinking how they would feel if all of these things happened to them. Bret isn't even as bitter as people say anyway, in my opinion. Only when being interviewed about the worst moments of his life over and over again.

I would hate Eric Bischoff too if I was Bret Hart all Eric did was stroke Hogan’s ego he was Hulk Hogan’s cheerleader throughout Hogan’s WCW run he did not give a shit about the other talent don’t get me wrong The NWO angle was one of the best storylines in the history of pro wrestling without a shadow of doubt but after 1998 it started to get very stale and then the WWF started turning the tide in the ratings war they did not utilize Bret Hart correctly. They booked him very poorly matter of fact I can barely remember Bret Hart’s WCW career…. This is one of the reasons why Eric Bischoff is no longer in the wrestling business and he’s just doing these podcast living in the past because he made too many poor decisions and ultimately killed the WCW let’s be honest after 1998 was over Eric Bischoff was a has been and still is and his 2002-2005 WWE run wasn’t all that great

I don't believe Bret does 'hate' Eric. He has always said that he had no problem with Eric as a person - his criticism is that he doesn't think Eric knew what he was doing regarding the wrestling business and was too easily influenced by Hogan. Anyway, it seems to me that Eric is the bitter, miserable one. Bret is getting on with his life while Eric sits there constantly ranting about him on his podcast.

Of course. He had post-concussion syndrome for more than a year after the Goldberg match, followed by a severe stroke in 2002. He has talked about how the stroke caused emotional problems. Eric and Conrad never seem to take that into account. Having said that, I don't think Bret is particularly bitter about life in general - only when he's being interviewed about the worst times of his life over and over again.

Brett just wants to be miserable. He made millions of dollars living his dream. He has a family wife, kids nice home, nice things.. but all he wants to do is cry about the past. His biggest problem is he is the biggest Brett Hart mark there is. He can't separate reality from kayfabe.

I just dont know why... but in my memories I can only think of that Bret hart and Sting feud... which kind of fizzled out.
Something about Bret yelling about "Mascara" as a taunt.
And I'm like going... bro... this is exactly why you don't draw.
    "Put on mooore mascara stiiing!"
He's as much to blame for him floundering in WCW as he kind of held WWF down being their champ... as sweet of a ring performer he was.
