So I listened carefully to (and watched) the Ventures doing this. To me it sounds like in the introduction, they are playing A Major, but once the verse starts with the lead guitar playing the melody, then it's A MINOR. Which makes sense because otherwise the melody (which features the minor 3d - C natural, as posed to C Sharp) would clash with an A Major.
