- How to play Walk Don't Run by The Ventures
In this guitar lesson tutorial, we look at how to play Walk Don't Run as performed by the Ventures. The instrumental was written and first performed by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith in 1954. It was later adapted and covered by Chet Atkins in 1956. This arrangement was covered by the Ventures in 1960 and achieved worldwide success, being regarded by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the top 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.

Lesson by Paul Campion - Хобби
I have been listening to this since it was a hit with the Ventures and playing only the rhythm chords. Very nice to see it played step by step. Thank you very much!

oooooo i luv this! thank yoooooou
good lesson mate, thanks
Fantastic lesson Paul! Great background history as well. One of my band mates was friends with Johnny Smith.
Thanks Richard. I really like Jonny Smith's version. I always like to give credit to the original writer.
Very cool! He was my godfather, although the story isn't that exciting. My dad played with him in Portland, Maine in the 1940s, before he went off to New York and got famous. I never got to meet him. I've heard that he was a very private man, so other than that I don't really know what he was like. Did your friend tell any stories about him?
That's a beautiful guitar.
THANKS 4 WALKING THROUGH IT AND NOT RUNNING !
Only just got that joke.
Thank youuu from old Germany! :))
Brilliant lesson thank you
Thanks Woody.

Great video, thank you
No problem, thanks for the comment.
Thanks my good man!
nicely done. I need a Jaguar now!! A Strat will work just as good. great lesson to a great old song
A old telecaster do the same thing
I've watched numerous guitar instruction videos. What makes it hard to follow along is when a person shows a few notes, stops, and then slides his hand up to neck where he is not going to play and then brings his hand back to the playing area. As the fingers are being watched, the viewer, or at least me, follow the hand and then finds it hard to readjust when back at the playing area. Otherwise, great video. Thanks!
Good video, but yeah, that little nervous tick of sliding to the third fret is really distracting.
Thank you! 👍
You're welcome!
Hey Paul, great tutorials... I was looking through your list trying to find "Pipeline" by the Ventures and couldn't find it... I was wondering what the chances are that you might do that one in the future... I have seen it by other instructors but for me they don't take enough time on it, it's like once through and done... I would really like to see your version...thanks, and again, great tutorials!!!
Thanks Robert. I will be doing more Ventures tutorials in the future. I'll give your suggestion a listen.
thanks very much Paul... I should have mentioned in my previous message that "Pipeline" was originally recorded in 1962 and released in 1963 by the Chantays... the Ventures released their version later that same year...
“Most people don’t know that Bob Bogle was the lead player on this song.Nokie Edwards is heard only playing bass on the original recording from 1960.”
nice guitar friend
Thanks. Fell in love with it the moment I saw it.
Thank you for a good lesson. Tell me please, what strings do you use? Thank you.
I have Rotosound R10 yellows on the Strat at the moment.
Thank you. Lovely tutorial!
Thankyou Naseema. Glad you like it.
What about the three opening chords?
The yousian video was the same chords same progression but I’m here for the lead 💿🐑
Very beginning sounds like la Bamba
Heard it too!
I'm a guitar/bass player. I was taught never to play an open string especially when playing melodies because you can't change keys!
That is why you use a capo to easily change keys
All you need to is know what scale degree open strings are and you can get a lot of tonal possibilities that aren’t available when no open strings. True some things become available only in certain keys so if you need to transpose- be able to do what you describe too if without capo but why limit yourself?
Everybody seems to play this song differently.
I hate to say this but your fingers are not visible, you play with like a claw grip
IF YOU WERE IN SCHOOL YOU WOULD BE 2 KOOL 4 SKOOL
Trashmen version is the best.
Would be great if you talk less nervous and hesitant
