Great writing and music, originality, and a distinguished spokesperson. This was quality stuff, if they'd made it into a weekly cartoon I would have watched it. P.S. I still have my Grumble figure!
We got this all the time. I don't remember the magnets, but we did collect the little rubbery figures, we got every one. The cereal was basically Captain Crunch.
Omg, I can't believe I found this! I was fourteen and this was my cereal! I was collecting the little plastic characters and they just quit making it! 😂
Ralston-Purina mainly made "concept" cereals. Most didn't last long..🤔 Same ingredients & flavors rebranded into different platforms of cereals along the way..
Don’t recall the commercial, but I had all the stickers and 1 hologram of the green guy, all still stuck on my bedroom wall at dad’s where I grew up, along with a bunch of smilies, GPKs…..
Like I said in another post my friend, who lived across the street, 1969-1978, gave me his Freakies magnets about ten years ago. It was one of his only real ties to his boyhood home. It is an honor to be caretaker of such wonderous relics from the 70s Freakies cereal tasted great, kinda like a cross between Quisp and CaPN cRUNCH. Im still a kid at heart.
This is not 1974... it's 1971. The creator of the Freakies was my parents' best friend and my "auntie", Jackie End. She also wrote the Mel Brooks and Charles Nelson Reilly Bic Banana commercials... I spoke at her funeral at Frank Campbell's in NYC. I grew up on that block, 81st and Madison Avenue... yesterday was Jackie's birthday. I miss her SO much... Also, the character "Boss Moss" was her actual boss, Charlie Moss.
Wow, thanks for posting! I'm glad to know that history. I was five years old at the time, though I doubt that I heard this first commercial until I was eight.
Bengali: Just Google "Freakies Cereal Toys" and I bet you'll find a few listings on ebay etc. Here's one for you: www.ebay.com/itm/like/262854705486?lpid=82&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true
"Oh Happy Day!" And yes, that is the penguin himself, Burgess Meredith. Great Commercial.
"Waaack-Waaack-Waaaack!"

I can't believe they dedicated 55 seconds to a whole ass story with animation to advertise a cereal.

Freakies were test-markted in select cities from 1971 until Sept of 1974 when they went national.
