Another source for fabric is to use precut packs found in a lot of quilt shops. You can choose from Charm Packs, Jelly Rolls, Fat Quarters, etc. This can take the guess work out of coordinating colors.
A much easier way to do this: Use a fusible web like wonder-under or magic fuse. Iron it onto the back of squares of fabric **before** you cut out the letters. Then you can draw your letter outline on the paper backing, then cut out the letter, then peel off the paper backing. (so you only cut once, through the fabric and paper layers). Now your fabric letters have a layer of fusible glue on their backs, and it goes all the way to the edge of the fabric. The arrange the letters on your shirt and iron them on.
I have so much scrap fabric, this is a great idea for using it. I've been wanting to make a FREE BRITNEY shirt and this is my chance. Also, related to the bandana project you didn't like...I'd love to see tops made from silk scarves or vintage scarves. I think they are usually no sew, but I can never figure out how to do them...
I love how your shirts turned out - so cute! You can also cut letters from fabric that has Heat and Bond already ironed to it. And if you have a Cricut, you can cut out the letters with that.
Double sided fusible interfacing would also make this super easy work. It's called 'Vlisofix' here, but the brand may be different in the U.S. You just iron it on your decorative fabric, cut out your motiv, then peel off the backing from the second side and iron it onto your garment. Although if it's supposed to hold up to repeated washings, I'd still stitch around the perimeter. But there will be no fraying or shifting or stuff, at least.
@@marypetrie3513 yup that was a craft trend of the late 80's and 90's when I worked at fabric stores. Turning any printed fabric into iron-on appliques. The puffy paint on the edges sealed it from fraying.
Okay, seriously?! You do all of the practice investigative work so we don't have to. That is beyond so awesome!!! You totally rock, thank you so much for this!!!
I used to do this a lot for high school (homecoming, games, senior year) and I used that puffy paint to line the letters. It was great to give it some extra texture but also to keep the letters and extra security. Also if you don’t know how to sew you can use iron in heat n bond!
It's really true. She makes perfect and awesome videos and give excellent ideas, when you need a boost on your outfit. 🎊💯💯💯♥️ And believe in me, I improved my English to understand correctly everything she says🇵🇹♥️❤️
I always wonder what to do with my scrap fabric when I crop T-shirts or my used pillowcases or scrap lace!! I have a bucket full where I use the scraps four cleaning or just general purposes Recently I have been making lovely lace hair bows. You are amazing I can’t believe I’m early. I’m thinking of making the word angel with a way to scrap fabric on a black 90s skinny strap tank!! Thanks for the inspo have a wonderful weekend!! ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
Fusible interfacing under the letters will give them more substance to sew on the shirt. Also a ball point needle can make sewing knits easier, especially if you want to use a zigzag stitch
It's good to see you've recycled materials from an old project. Liked your suggestion about types of fabrics to use. Really liked this project. Am sharing with my crafters group.
Absolutely love them! I'm making tie dye shirts for Christmas gifts and now I will be making block letter t-shirts as well! Thank you for the inspiration!
The easiest thing to use is called Wonder Under. It turns everything into an iron on patch. It also makes it so that it doesn’t ruffle on the edges. Great color choice.
Hmmmmm.... I have some really cool decorative stitches that I haven’t been able to use, I might try this! Also, a no sew version would be wonder under and fabric paint.
I just love the things you come up with. I watch them over and over and over again and wishing I would take the time and energy to get to some of these projects you’ve come up with but right now watching a two year old is not in the picture right now but one dayat 77 I slow down
ORLY!!!! It is not Friday without your DIY. Love this idea so much...can't wait to do it. Heavy Wonder-under and you can do this no-sew for people who don't have a machine. You are it girl, so inspiring. xo
wow - was looking for information on alterations and found your you tube channel - subscribed immediately - you and your energy are amazing. watched the one on how you altered without sewing, then the interview with Ashlee and Tali - so inspiring. Now this one - so informative. I will probably spend the rest of the day on your channel. thank you so much.
Omgosh the timing of this video is perfect! I am wanting to add my new granddaughters name to a quilt I made but I don’t want embroidery... I was trying to decide how I wanted to do it. The only difference I think I will make is using wonder under and fuse it that way since I want this to be something she will carry around forever. This was my first ever quilt and I learned a LOT! Now I can’t wait for her to be born. 7\24/21 can’t wait!
Outlining boss with the black marker.....did the outline bleed once it was washed? Also sewing thru the tacky spray did it damage your needle & also what about the under stitch, did you have thread or stitch issues with the tacky spray? How about using tacky glue and no sewing? I'm thinking about using demin for my letters. Love this DIY
Especially with the thinness of the material you used, you could have easily cut out the letters with a silhouette or cricut machine! Also, why not adhere them with stitch witchery? Makes it sooo much easier to sew around later. TFS!💕
yes!! but there are so many people who DONT have a cricut so I wanted to make sure they could do this too! But I am doing a whole cricut video on Friday!
@The DIY Designer I was wondering if its possible to take a pair of plain wedges and diy the espridelle part? Maybe with twine? Espridelles are so expensive.
Could you glue the letters down? I’m thinking using gold pens to make details. I love the letters on the vintage t shirt. The pinking shears detailing just added to that feeling. I wonder if gluing th letters down would have stopped the fraying. Maybe cut out blocks of fabric and see them down with the shapes of the letters inside I’m sorry this is just one of the designs that can just take a person in any direction! Edit- for sizing just use your printer to size out you letters.
Orly, can you please do a DIY side split hem / side slit hem leggings and jeans? I’m only 5’ 2” tall so all the ones I have bought are way too long for me. If I hem them, there goes most of the slit😩 I’d love to be able to make them out of a pair of petite jeans or leggings but I don’t know where to begin.
Thank you, one of the best/easiest Pride projects (I’d wear year round as I feel everyone should be proud of how they identify every single day, but will take 1 mon of awareness😉) & just what I was looking for as I can’t find anything exact to what I want. I have scraps going back to the 30s (can’t toss interesting scraps, it’s a problem😆!) from vintage clothes I altered over the years to fit teensy me, so this will be fun choosing! Might even attempt something for kiddo & partner. Will tag if I come up w/ something interesting. Thanks again & Happy Pride Month🏳️🌈! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️😻🏠🐾🐈⬛🙏🏼🤞😢💔

Fantastic suggestion! Thank you!
I would’ve loved seeing them modelled with white jeans 💕

Use wonder under - iron on before you cut the letters- much easier!! This also helps the letters lie flat after washing so they don’t try to curl

Yes! Here in Canada it’s called Heat and Bond. I was going to comment the same thing!! We use it all the time when appliqué in quilting!
love that!!
Great tutorial! Another option for tacking down the letters could be Pellon wonder under fusible web.
That was what I was going to say. I worked in the shop that made Greek (sorority/fraternity) shirts. Pellon and zigzag stitches.
You could also use (fusible) interfacing. It basically makes diy iron on patches.
love that!!
Yep wonder-under or magic-fuse, any double sided fusible web makes this so much easier.
I was thinking same thing!!! No sew, my aunt did that in nineties with puff paint on edges, our names.

I made face masks and sold them. Made aprons as gifts and made pockets with them, even patched masks for myself, pincushion ets
@@Hyaphill love it!!! So lovely and creative. My mom made some masks too. You’re awesome !! 💛☀️💛☀️
Super! Super! SUPER!!! The black line arround letters was a great idea. 🎯♥️ Both Ts are lovely.
Very nice, also using the right size needle for the fabric is a key.
And doing a practice piece of fabric. I feel for all the corrections she is making!!! I am also wondering if using a lightweight fusing?
Fusible interfacing under the letters will give them more substance to sew on the shirt. Also a ball point needle can make sewing knits easier, especially if you want to use a zigzag stitch

Love this idea! I think my 12 yr old daughter will have fun with this as well.
I love how u correct ur mistakes in your 2nd attempt...💕🥰
Orly your stuff is totally spot on!! Love how honest you are. Thanks for inspiring me this past year 👍💖✂️🧵
thanks for wathcing for the past year!!
Nice. You can back the rounded letters with iron on pelon. That will keep them flat. Iron on the fabric then cut.
Love them all but my fav is the BOSS ONE♡
Cute and creative as always!! Great way to upcycle fabric and look cute too! 😃
Super cute!! I am already thinking what to try this on.
These are just great and just scissors and a sewing machine ,so individual too ,thankyou
Glad you like them!
Cute cute!! Such a great idea using tacky spray glue to hold down the fabric before sewing!! 👏👏🙌💖💖💖❤
The possibilities are endless, I can see trying shapes with this
Absolutely love them! I'm making tie dye shirts for Christmas gifts and now I will be making block letter t-shirts as well! Thank you for the inspiration!
You are so welcome!
You can also use a buttonhole or satin stitch around the letters.

wish I knew this, love it! thanks!
It will look really cool on a pair of baggy jeans
You can Write something from the top to the bottom really straight and boxy or In kinda messy Ways
Oh Orly you did it again! They both look smashing! Any ideas how to diy a De Vesi bandana bag?? That would be awesome! ❤️
Took me back to my early 20's w/this one 😘rly...

I love your DIY ideas 👍 ( I recommend an anti slip mat for your ironing pad…hihi)
Thanks for sharing your technique, I’d love to make something for Canada Day:)
I know you have a cricuit machine you can actually use that also to cut the letters out of the bandanas .
yes! but I didn't want to alienate those who dont... but next week's video is all cricut DIYS!

Wow this is great I’m always looking for a fun graphic T,now I will have custom made t shirts, thanks for sharing🇿🇦
Beautiful
A great no sew version would be to use iron on fusible webbing. The webbing only needs to be slightly smaller than the letters.
yes, so many people sharing that, wish I thought of that!
I love your ideas and crafting 💗 We are reverse tie dyeing everything.
love that!

I did!! They were too tight around the waist and giving me a camel toe lol
Can u do a no sew for this or do u have to sew it?
I love it, best wishes from Germany. ❤️🏳️🌈
Omgggggg this is fantastic! Thank you for sharing!
Wow, just wow. You are so freaking talented. I want to make everything:) did you diy the ombré jeans? They are gorgeous 🥰🥰🥰
I did, they're in last weeks Bleach video!
🖤🖤
What is the black marker you used. Please give the link of the product. Does it bleed on washing
It's by Artistro! Paint pens, doesn't bleed no
Your t- shirt looks great though.
I’ve never clicked a video so fast 😅
haha xoxo
This is cool but I’ll probably use my cricut for the letters
you could totally do that!! I have an amazing cricut vid next week!
Would the colors run onto the white shirt when washing?
nope!
Love this definitely gonna try doing one or two!..also love the jeans you were wearing did you bleach them yourself? X❤️
Found the video, for the jeans ❤️
hahah yes!! they';re my new favorite!
depends on your shorts. You just need to measure where it will be going
💕💕
Would love a no sew option.
Ugh I realized I forgot to say it in the VoiceOver, sorry! you just use fabric glue along all the edges!

oh shoot, wonder why :(
If you use iron on interfacing for embroidery then your t- shirt will not stretch either.
