    The revolver is a Smith and Wesson MK2 hand ejector, it’s a factory made 455 revolver made for the British army

      @@elvadiatolputt9742not with M1917 markings, it isn’t. The British .455’s pre date the M1917. This one was probably fitted with the barrel and cylinder from a 2nd model hand ejector for some reason. Probably had two damaged revolvers and made one out of both.

    Wow! That's an interesting one! I've seen several 1917's in .455 that were factory made that way. Probably private purchased revolvers. I kind of wonder if it was made either from a leftover US frame, or if it was a US issued revolver, then rebuild and sent as a lend lease weapon? This one really is worthy of getting a letter from S&W to at least understand how it left the factory and who was the initial buyer. That is a fantastic revolver!

    If it's a British contract S&W in 455 Webley, it's supposed to also take 45 colt as well as opposed to the American M1917s by both Colt & S&W, which were only in 45 ACP

  • @ulysses2921

    My guess is rear it was a war time private purchase, as all officers were required to purchase their own firearms, and after the war it’s been tinkered with. The rough barrel and US army grip being evidence of that. That front blade also seems to be a home made modification done during the same time I imagine.

  • @Gunsbeerfreedom87
    @Gunsbeerfreedom87 3 года назад +1

    Parts gun build most likely. The Mk2 hand ejects and the 1917 are essentially the same just different calibers (and the cylinder is different in the 1917 for allowing clips).

  • @leighrate
    @leighrate 3 года назад +2

    If it is war time production, a lot of the finer finishing was forgone in favour of speed of production, so I wouldn't read too much into the barrel finish.
    That front blade sight might have been added when the pistol was shot to confirm it's accuracy and zero. If it was shooting too high, a taller front blade sight would have been added. A soft metal like copper is easier to fine adjust with a file.

    The quick answer is to use cerasafe (serasafe?) to take a casting of a chamber. That will answer your questions.
    As to the pistol itself, I suspect it is a WW1 bring back.
    One of the ugly truths of WW1 was that American Doughboys were heavily reliant on British & French armaments.

    The Smith and Wesson Triple Lock was sold to Britain and Canada along with other revolvers of other companies to compensate for the slow production of Webley Mk.V's (Although the purchase slowed after the MK.VI was introduced and Webley managed to catch up) .What you are holding is a Mk.II , a modification requested to Smith and Wesson that removed various features for increased Battlefield effectivity , such as removing the Ejector Shroud (Minus the locking lug) and the Oil Grooved that ended up just accumulating mud .
    So it is technically not an M1917 but a predecessor .
    These guns (Including the Colt New Service) were sometimes favoured by Soldiers over the Webley revolvers .

    So British needed guns they need help really bad and asked America for guns so america already got Smith and Wesson to build revolvers and colt to build revolvers because the issued handgun was the 1911 and we didn't have enough of them so they chambered them to shoot 45 acp with moon clips so anyway when Britain needed more guns they didn't have enough of they're Webley s we sent them the colts and smiths chambered in 455 Webley and I have one fully restored chrome plated with me black vz grips looks like it just left the factory and it's one of my favorite guns I love it

  • @michaelray4033

    Maybe it started life as a 1917, then someone rebuilt it to 455? Someone's project gun from after WW2. Or, it is an original 455, but someone stamped 1917 on the grip.

    • @Viper2132
      @Viper2132 3 года назад

      Nope, 1917s use a different frame. It's definitely a S&W no.2 hand ejector, which were originally produced from 1915-17 in 455 Webley for the British. The only mystery is how "US ARMY MODEL 1917" got stamped in the butt

  • @LeonardoTheMage

    I know this video is over a year old, but I think I know more or less what this is and I can't find anyone else who's said it so I'll leave it as a comment anyways. If you look closely at the chamber rims, there's a little rebate in there, and those chambers run nearly to the end of the cylinder before they narrow down to the throats. This is a very common modification on 2nd model hand ejectors that was done on these guns to allow them to chamber .45 Colt, and still properly headspace .455 Webley since the rims on those cartridges are wide enough to bridge the gap and rest on the original cylinder face. The 2nd model hand ejector and the S&W model 1917 used the exact same frame, the only differences being that the 1917's had slightly shorter barrels and were chambered and barreled for .45 ACP on moon clips.
    I think what happened is someone had a model 1917 laying around during the interwar period, possibly with some sort of issue with the barrel or cylinder, and they decided to buy up a cylinder and barrel from a 2nd Model converted to .45 Colt that had been stripped for parts. If there was something wrong with the original gun's barrel/cylinder, this would fix it. It would also provide a marginal power boost shooting the more powerful .45 Colt. The .45 Colt originally used .454" diameter bullets, while .45 ACP used .452" bullets. After WWII, Colt decided they should start loading their .45 Colt ammunition with .452" bullets since there were a lot more 1911's in circulation, and started making their cylinders and barrels the correspondingly tighter diameter. If the modification had been done post WWII, they wouldn't have needed to switch out the barrel from the tighter .45 ACP one to the .455 one. The sight modification was likely done because the .45 Colt cartridge would've been hitting much higher than the .455 Webley that sight was originally filed for, due to muzzle rise and the increased recoil of the more powerful cartridge.
    So yes, it is a frankengun, and you should try shooting some (gentle, original spec) .45 Colt rounds through it.

    Someone put the barrel and cylinder from a 2nd model hand ejector, on a M1917 frame. Maybe back in the days when half moon clips were scarce, or possibly ruined the barrel on the M1917 and repaired it with whatever was available.

  • @russelsellick3649
