2014 Mini Cooper S Review: Bigger really is better

- Опубликовано: 6 сен 2024
- We've had a chance to test the brand new 2014 Mini and ultimately, we think it's fantastic. It drives well, looks great and is generally a blast. Be warned though: The new Mini bigger than previous Minis so if you're of the opinion that Minis should be exactly that (small) then you might not be so keen on this.
That said, the extra size makes it a much better vehicle.
Apart from the gear knob in our test car... that needs a little work.

This guy is the best reviewer ever. Good facts and points, just a light bit of funny ness aswell
I work at a BMW/MINI dealer. And when I first saw this video and you talked about the shifter flying off. I thought naaaahh that's probably once in a million. But then.....The past 2 2014's I've driven at work, the knobs flew off :| Once on our Cooper S manual Demo, and a BRAND NEW off the truck manual Cooper S. Kinda shocks me. I hope they fixed it in the 2015's
I wonder if they had a problem installing at the factory. That's the standard BMW knob attachment they've used for 20 years (or more). They take a real thump to reinstall properly.
Just got a 2015 mini hardtop it's awesome.
I have the same car, same year, same colour, just upgraded wheels to JCW 5 spoke black alloys and its the best most fun car I have ever owned...
Yaaaaawn to those going on about the size. Give it a rest. Almost no one but people with their rose tinted spectacles on wants a tiny car where you have to sit in it with your chin resting on your knees.
The new Mini is impressively comfortable and still handles well plus it goes like a rocket when you want it to. Not had a problem with the gear shift yet but I don't tend to pull up on it. Might have to try it and see what happens :-)
One annoying thing is regarding the manual - it only covers the basics so you have to sit in the car and read the onboard manual to work out most of the options. Bit of a pain.
best review I've ever seen. rory alongside some proper drum and bass notes could sell me on any auto!
"bigger really is better", "first time a knob goes off my hand", this review LOL...
I have been looking at different reviews and yours truly beats them. Keep up the great work.
I don't think I'd have a problem...when I shift gears enthusiastically, I don't pull UP on the stick.
How else do you access 7th gear? Just kidding. Anyway, I didn't pull up deliberately when it happened the first time. I pulled up in the video to show how easily it pops off.
Rory Reid So in just normal shifting it came off! Oly crap!
I have never seen one of your reviews, but I have to say, you are one of the best people at reviewing I have ever seen. You seem knowledgable, entertaining, and as honest as possible. keep at it.
Very kind. Thanks Andrew. Indeed we will keep at it. Make sure you subscribe for more cool content. :)
another great review, i've got the R53 Cooper S which has been like one of the family but is juicy, bumpy and high on road tax - you my friend are pushing me to have a test drive next weekend
That gearknob attachment (to the top of the shaft, not the gaiter skirt) is standard BMW. They are usually so hard to remove that smashing the rearview mirror off and even cracking the windscreen which your hand whipping up is not uncommon when removing it! To properly reinstall you have to give it a thump with your hand once it's set on top. I bet it was never set in place properly.
Rory your review was spot on and makes me want to test drive the new mini!
I really recommend it. Such a fun car. Make sure you subscribe if you want to see more like this!
What a great review...felt like I was right there with you!
Cheers John! Subscribe for more great content!
I love my F56 S and every one of the 13,000 miles I've driven in the first year of ownership. Great review style. Watched it even though I have videos of this car on my channel haha
Great review! Just picked up my Mini Cooper last week, and loving it!
I prefer the supercharged R53 cooper s, the wheelbase was the most go kart like, and the instant reaction from the blower suited the cars small dynamics.
This is the best review i have seen for this car
nice review!!!! except i don't think you are suppose to pull up when your shifting but it should probably stay on regardless though ;)
One of the best car reviews I've seen in a long time! Defos subscribing!
Good man! Thanks Darren.
Is this the same guy that reviews for Autotrader? Great progress!
The Auto is faster than the manual?
Awesome review, love the way you ripped the gear shifter off the centre. Strong man
Had the same issue with the gear knob coming off during a test drive. While putting it in reverse it popped off.
Amazing review. I'm loving the new mini
Cheers John. Hope you subscribe for more... we've got loads more in the pipeline.
I had a 2012 mini Cooper S and I loved it. Debating a newer one or an even older one!! Definitely used but I am definitely missing the handling!
Just be careful, the R56 are great fun but extremely harsh on your pocket. Having owned one before
Mini 2014 = BMW Series 1 - very powerful and less problems vs the older models.
2 liter Turbo engines on the market: Subaru 268 HP, Hyundai Sonata 274 HP, Ford Fusion 231 HP, Volkswagen Beetle 210 HP, Mitsubishi Lancer 295 HP. The Mini should produce AT LEAST 220 HP, but there isn't any reason it shouldn't be making 230-250 HP from the factory. Or is there? Maybe I'm missing something...
First time I've viewed a RecombuCars review; have to say I really like this review and have just subscribed. Well done and keep up the good work!
Absolutely nailed it Rory!
Thanks, Sticky!!
Great review. I was not sure about the size increase, but your video ensures me for the better 😊. Thanks.
you should do a head 2 head with the ford focus and golf GTI
This guy is so likeable, great review
My gear knob also came off, while trying to put it in reverse.
Great review Rory! :-)
Rory sends his regards, Clanmac66! He'd reply personally, but he's busy breaking something at the moment.
Awesome review but I got 1 small question about this car.
You said this new mini cooper is bigger, does that include the SD and the other versions as well? Also which car do you prefer S or SD?
I really want this as my first car
Well done review!
but can you buy the new mini with mat colored lights rings instead of chromy?
While I enjoyed your review build design may be a real problem. I've been waiting for a new thermostat (over designed) for more than a week now. 2009 Clubman JCW with steering on the left ;-)
Excellent review-many thanks. X
Awesome review man
Absolutely brilliant review!
love the new design. but I'm not liking those chrome squares on the bottom front bumper, looks off.
Boss Buse You can get them blacked out on the S. Just don't order the chrome line exterior.
Get the JCW package.
great review. I think this is a mini i would by………save for that gear shifter nob bit.
same here bro... i'd buy it regardless actually! great car.
Any review or feedback in regards to the Base Cooper Hardtop 2014?
We've only driven the Cooper S and Cooper D so far, but the Cooper won't be far off. It's bound to be brilliant too :)
F'n hilarious 4:06. Omg! You had me laughing so hard that I woke my wife. :)
range rover gear stick comes off exactly the same way.
Girth... bigger is better... first time a knob has come off in my hand... Young man, a career in comedy awaits. LOL. Great review too.
Very good review!
great review, love the car
Good review.
Does the car have paddle shifters??
In korea, no.
Km / L please?
can't wait for the JCW >>>
this is one of the best cars for teens
Awesome dude.....
Ive got a 2008 cooper s, and i must say im not pleased with the new models and their price, they are bigger and dont resemble mini anymore in my opinion.. the price is very big also for a a car that still doesnt have enough boot space and leg room in the back. Having said this they should have kept the same exterior design and size and change the interior a bit nothing more, BMW is ruining the MINI or atleast what the MINI was. MINI is not BIGGY.
怎样作黑色蒜头?
A 2015 Subaru WRX 2.0 turbocharged engine makes 268 hp @ 5600 rpm and 258 ft/p torque @ 2000 rpm. Are we on the same planet? This Mini could be a SUB 5 second to 60 and 165+ mph car with an engine like Subaru's...
Again with the numbers... Mini has the HP and torque available at even earlier RPM's, 4700 rpm and 1250 rpm respectively. For the kiddies that like to tune out their cars, there's always a market to customize a mini just like a WrX, which I'm assuming is the one you're referring to, and don't get me started on which brand appeals more to retirees... With the exception of the WRX and the BRZ, the cars don't appeal to a younger gen. The subaru's also more expensive, weighs more, much bigger in size, less appealing from the inside, very last decade. I also feel that the new WRX copied a bit much to the likes of a Mk5 Golf and the new CLA front... Very un-original. The mini is a classic, and though it has grown, which may have pissed some retirees for the size, like this review said, it's still a lot of fun to drive, and still feels premium, gets more smiles, better gas efficiency without comprises.
isxrapple I like the Mini, but the engine is a miserable failure. Do you see all those 4 dr Hyundai Sonatas running around? They have 2 liter turbocharged engines producing 274 HP and 269 TQ. The Mini just doesn't stack up...
How is this car faster to 60mph then the fiesta st while being havier en having 10 hp less en 10nm on torque less is it because bmw who produces the engine is really carefull with telling the power output something in me thinks tis car produces over 200hp en over 300nm of torque lol
Yeah and it's not 6.8 seconds 260 it's 6.1 to 6.3
I love the look and modernisation of the mini, I want to get one but my concern is do people out there questions a guy's sexuality like they do with a Audi TT?
Haha excellent review :)
Cheers Mehdi. :)
r56 is the best mini
This is no Mini, it is an BMW 1 Series with different Styling. If you realy love Mini you must hate this car
Wah wah wah..
Why have u stole ur footage off autotraders road trip review and 2nd review on this car??. ...people if u look closely u will see the number plate end in VOA which is the footage he stole off AutoTraders review. 😠😠
Steven Adams All publications are allowed to use B-roll provided by manufacturers. So no one is stealing anything.
and drives home in his jumpn low-rider
This thing is tiny! No trunk space at all! And the interior materials are not all that great. Overall it's too expensive for what it is. Take a look at the small Nissan Micra. The interior and trunk space is massive compared to this car. I always wanted a mini until I jumped in. I hope mini figures out a way to add more room on the inside and better materials.
you're comparing a BMW Mini to a Nissan Micra??? bore off!!
Rob Shingles Ya so what if I am? No space in the mini = bad. Might as well buy a roadster mini.
Yeah, if only the lack of space was advertised in the name! Oh wait...
João Soares Thats stupid. Look at the Smart car. It has more interior space and a larger trunk. And thats with a 3 cylinder engine in the trunk! Mini's are really badly engineered.
Xenophene01 The relative lack of space doesn't have anything to do with how well engineered a car is. It's a conscious choice in terms of design - this is not a car that makes interior space a priority. This is meant for spirited drives on B roads. If you want space buy a station wagon. Or that Datsun you're so in love with.
I love the new interior. But in my eyes the R53 was the best looking Cooper.
The newer minis look fat and ugly. The compact small looking design of the R53 is much better looking.
Wrong direction... This needs to be a simple. performance Mini, not a luxurious hatchback. Less BS and less weight with a MINIMUM of 210 HP and 210 torque. From 1995-1999, Mitsubishi's Eclipse 2 liter turbo 4G63 engine made 210 HP and 214 torque. (20 years ago...)
Unfortunately, it's not all about HP and Torque when it comes to MINI. As a new owner of a R56 Cooper S, and owning two eclipses previous 2G and 3G GT (V6), the mini beats mitsubishi in all aspects. Way more refined engine, better fuel economy, awesome performance, reliability, and a blast to drive.
isxrapple Trust me. You'd be far happier if your new Mini S had an additional 20 hp from the factory. Right? 190 hp is way too Honda Civic for $27,000... Actually, I'd buy a Civic 2.4 liter with 6 speed manual for $22,000 before I ever considered a Mini...
Dude to each his own. A civic's got nothing on a MINI, I don't think you've actually driven a Cooper S to even have a valid point. I'm speaking from real-world experience, I've driven Civics, Acura (integra - first car), eclipses, and all the same type of demographic your taste seems to like. The MINI's refined engine is better IMHO. This is European/ German engineering vs JDM... I think many people would agree. It's not always about numbers on a sheet of paper, or how big or small something is. It's all about the driver in charge. :-D
isxrapple 2015 Subaru 2 liter turbocharged engine (same size as the Mini) makes 268 hp at a sleepy 5600 rpm and 258 ft.p of torque at only 2000 rpm. I honestly think this Mini engine was designed for kiddies and retirees who need restricted hp to keep them safe and out of the gutter...
Dear mini Cooper s I'm simple person that have an extra job I have a wife and a daughter I have only 1000 euro on my saving account and my dreams is to have you, so I can go where ever I want with my family specially with my child because she also want to have you,so my dearest mini Cooper s I hope I can afford you...

If I wanted a bigger Mini, I'd buy a Clubman or better yet, a Countryman. But not a Cooper. BMW is destroying the Mini with every redesign. Overpriced, overloaded with useless gizmos and lousy reliability.
Fair enough. The Cooper's a beast though.. in a good way.
Too big, not as fun and just as unreliable
SpyderRios How ignorant. These haven’t been out long enough to judge their new engines.
