DAVE: a 12x12x12 box, that is the inside dimensions, most people ship those as 13x13x13 but I ship as 13x12x12 because the height with the flaps is the measurement most over 12” the other sides are close. The package will be oversized if you do not cut it down a little. You are lucky that you are just now getting these charges because USPS can be even worse, if over the increment at all they expect you to round up.

I just started watching the video but boxes are measured based on the inside dimensions. a 12 x 12 x 12 box is that measurement on the inside but when you count for the thickness of the box that’s when the extra inch or so comes in to play. It wouldn’t be an issue if that extra inch didn’t put the package over one cubic foot, but it does

It goes deeper than that. It's the manufacturers of the boxes that I think are getting the kickback and if you call the box manufacturer, they will tell you that the dimensions are the interior dimensions, and they won't make a box for retailers that is literally 12x12x12 which would actually be helpful to you to save money on shipping.

12 x 12 x 12 is the interior dimension of the box. When sealed, especially if you are stuffing something in and taping it down, it will sometimes be over 12” on one side and that fraction will be calculated to the next inch. I have had some of my boxes be very sloppily made and had to increase the measurement because it said 6 x 6 x 4 on the box but one of the dimensions were slightly off because it was glued together a little bit sloppily so basically I have to measure all the dimensions across both directions the height everything because sometimes they don’t cut them or glue them together correctly and it just needs that quarter inch or less to mess you up. I also took all my packages to the counter and have them scanned by hand with me in front of them so if there’s any questions they could tell me. I’ve never had an issue with a package ,and being charged more. I only ship USPS as well. I don’t very often mail something big. So I will definitely pay extra attention if I mail with UPS

you so surprised me this morning. All the years you have been doing this and no one told you the box size printed on the box is the inside dimensions - not the outer dimension. So the 12x12x12 can have one or two sides that come in just a fraction over 12 inches making it 13 inches. This becomes an big issue because it makes it over a cubic foot in size and therefore a major price change. Not so much with smaller boxes. The way to get past this is to always push or cut down the top flap of a 12x12x12 so you can safely call it a 12x12x12 and avoid the adjustment. Annoying but necessary.

I have had a few of those adjustments and I know my dimensions were correct. I even take into account if a box is slightly bulging in the box middle because of cushioning which I was told once was the "issue". Perhaps now we have to do added unnecessary work and take photos of us measuring the packages. Where do the rip-offs stop? I am not sure where the discrepencies are truly coming from, and I think that's what needs to be determined first before any possible recourse, if any.

  • @bennystratton7734

remember what most boxes state on the outside are really the inside dimensions!! this is why its a MUST that you weight and MEASURE ALL SIDES on every package you send out so FACT most of the time the length is always the same so if it said length is 12 inches that is probably right now the ones that normal are not exactly 12 inches are the width and height usually either both are off by 1/4 or 1/2 of an inch which means you have to ROUND UP ALWAYS no matter if its USPS UPS FEDEX DHL they all require you to ROUND THE MEASUREMENT UP period no if ands or buts about it. this probably where they are getting you so if its 12 and 1/4 inch its 13 inches if its 12 1/2 inches its 13 inches any thing over 12 inches you round to 13 period then you will never have this issue again YEP i probably comes up MORE that you have to pay for postage at the time you print your label BUT then you save yourself these SURPRISES surcharges for not putting in the correct measurements. SO now we see that being off less the an inch how much $ it means 1 inch off can mean $8 $10 $15 even sometimes $20 in additional postage Lesson of today BE ACCURATE Joe the Crazy New York Taxi Driver had the same issue with USPS he did a video on this and could not believe that 1 inch off could mean an additional $9 in shipping charges I was LIKE YEP and told him that is why you must be EXACT in your measures and ALWAYS ALWAYS ROUND UP to the next INCH! never ever ROUND DOWN PERIOD! btw his issue was with a 12 x 12 x 12 box again LESSON For today class JUST because a box is Marked Cubed DOES NOT MEAN It CUBED

Most of my boxes are close to an inch taller that the marked size on the box. So if the box is marked 7x7x7 I enter it as 7x7x8 and so on. If there's actually an issue with an unwarranted upcharge on UPS you have no recourse through eBay like you do with USPS which is why I use PirateShip for my UPS labels...they offer you a way to dispute UPS upcharges. At least that's been my experience. I think UPS banks on us not physically measuring our boxes and that's how they can undercut USPS prices...all those upcharges add up a lot.

I just recently sent a package from UPS for the first time and took it to the store on Friday. I looked at the weight, and they weighed it at 8lbs 8oz, I had weighed it at home and it was 6lbs. I never have my weights that off at USPS. I am really upset that I am going to get a huge upcharge when they adjust it. I made a comment to them and said I have had a difference in ounces, but never had my weight be off by lbs. They didn't care. It was a big item, that's why I went with UPS. Now I am really worried just in general because I have seen other stories by other content creators getting charged $35 more for an adjustment. I only have 2 other items listed that are UPS, and it's because of their size I was planning on using Pirate Ship for them because the pricing was more reasonable but I am going to use a different UPS location because their scale is wrong and they didn't care.

This is the reason I don't use UPS for eBay related sales, they will charge you for differences sometimes right away but I've had in the past them take weeks then I get a random charge from them. Even using pirate ship to get a UPS label if it's wrong they will charge you the difference. BUT on pirate ship you can dispute it, this has worked for me when earlier this year I shipped back 3 40lbs boxes and they charged me and additional $40 per box after the fact. I disputed it and they refunded me everything they overcharged. Within the past few months I shipped back 3 30-50lbs boxes from Indy and they only charged me $13 total for the differences, which I expected since I underestimated slightly but it wasn't an outrageous charge and I was ok with it.

Obviously on the first 2 sales the package had gone through the USPS a total of 4 times. Each of those times the weight was 8 oz. Well, the sweater gained weight on the last passage through all the way up to 12 oz which cost an extra $1 and some change. Five times the exact same packing and exact same sweater- yet on the 5th time, they notified me all of a sudden it was heavier. I think it is all a bunch of bull. The woman I talked to at USPS said they just double check what the size and weight was at the next scan in the pricess to verify if it was right or wrong.

I was thinking about your golf clubs and how I would do them if I sold clubs. That short shelf that you originally had them on, I'm assuming you adjusted your shelving to make that space for them. You could do that again, but at eye level or higher. Wrap the club head with plastic wrap and put a SKU sticker on each one. I'm super crazy about making sure everything has a SKU and this is what I would probably do. Just an idea 😊 I think searching through each one in the garbage can would make me crazy lol

Dave! How's it going. I'm here to shed a little light on some of your questions.
The guy that you were waiting for negative feedback from. If eBay sided with you they will block the negative feedback.
Sometimes the boxes expand once you put something in them so it could have been barely over 12" and therefore they consider it 13". I always go up to the next inch to prevent any extra charges.
You can see if you have a UPS store/Hub near you and ask what can be done. I appreciate your videos and the fact that you're a good Dad.
    Have a great vacation,
    Pete

Dave, most boxes are sold by inside dimensions, so they will actually measure a fraction over the listed size. This means they need to be rounded up, and big changes can happen in cost at the 12" mark. We also noticed a big jump when shipping golf clubs- a 6x6x48 is about half the price of 7x7x48. Hope this helps! Good luck

If they are eBay boxes they are not 12 x12 x12. They are 12 x12 x12.25. I always cut the box down to make sure it's less than 12 x 12 x 12. And the box dimensions reflect the inside dimensions of the box not the outside.

Many boxes are slightly bigger than their stated size. You have to measure every box. Or just start calling all those boxes 13x13x13. Also, I think that's UPS. Sometimes i chech what the price for USPS Ground Advantage is if i bump up to the next inch and sometimes it doesn't make a difference in tge label price.

I stopped shipping UPS through eBay because of this. Apparently UPS hates Ebay because you can ship the same package through Pirateship and this doesn't ever happen. I had a 2 lb package they said weighed 28 lbs. I'll either use Pirateship or just use USPS on eBay.

12 x 12 x 12 is internal measurements so if it is larger than 12 usps makes it 13 by default.

I see lots of advice to just round up if even a little over the whole inch to avoid these corrections. That's probably good advice when it doesn't cost much more because the correction seems to be charged at the retail rate. Interestingly, UPS instructions for measuring boxes on their own website say, "round up" immediately followed by the instructions, "Round to the nearest whole number when taking your measurements. For example, 1 to 1.49 will be considered 1, and 1.5 to 1.99 will be considered 2." This means that unless the box is especially thick, two of your dimensions should round down and the height dimension with 4 layers of cardboard instead of 2 might still just barely round down.

so from what i understand, if their measurements are incorrect and you can prove that they are incorrect, you have to contact USPS/UPS/FedEx directly to fight it. However, even if they measure correctly and its just a 1/8th of an inch over the 12inch mark, they round up to the next inch.

What I would do if I have issues with something. I go after a virtual assistant for next steps if the company or person themselves don't go as planned and if I can afford it of course. I am actually working on getting a VA for my business ideas for possible next steps along with eBay if nothing seems to move forward, still working on getting a schedule going with a VA hopefully. Worst case scenario and if communicating with company don't go as planned if you can handle it is to sue the company for bad practices and get a good lawyer depending on affordability. Usually, business issues are discussed with a lawyer according to my own knowledge.
As for my sales, I have Hot Wheels listed with shipping on top. Only got 1 sale at the beginning of listing with no other buyers, but I am getting those views and watchers. Maybe I should turn on combined shipping. But my concern there is the price of shipping and if I need to change the packaging size. But just my current thoughts. 🤔😅😎

Most boxes measure the inside dimensions, so a 12x12x12 box will probably have 1-3 dimensions that is over 12 when box is constructed. I use 12x10x10 or 11x11x11 boxes to avoid this problem. Hope this helps.

I just had the UPS package size issue as well. The box I have is a 6x6x52 I cut the end down a little and marked it as 7x7x52 when sipping. The carrier said it was measured 9x7x52. There is no physical way the box could measure at 9 inches. However they also did the same thing and gave me a credit on a box as well (this was also measured wrong by them). I only had those two so in the end it was a wash and I just let it be.

I have noticed recently that when I change the box size when I'm buying the label, the cost increases (or decreases) sometimes. It seems like ebay is using a combination of weight AND dimensions when calculating the shipping cost. This is new.

I think UPS measures with lasers, and if it's slightly over it rounds up. Also they only recognize full inches, no 7.5" for instance. You will get adjustments on Pirateship also, they do have a dispute button, but I've never used it and I would say chances of you winning that will be low.
