Wow, Kubrick did such a great job! I’d never know that it wasn’t real! Seriously though, the lighting is quite good, any still shots could be mistaken for the real thing.
So I did this in my basement in 1970. I used two 100 Watt outdoor incandescent flood lights stacked. I was actually shocked how well the illumination looked.
It's still a haunting question how with primitive computers, telecommunications, television pictures without satellite TV transmissions perhaps how this was possible. We all looked at it with awe then, but now question the whole event. Why US cannot go again to the moon if they went so many times then, strange.
The only people that "now question the whole event" are those that haven't learned the facts about the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, nor any of the science that it took to win last century's space race.
Primitive computers? Sorry, computers of the time were entirely capable of calculating orbital trajectories. Satellite TV transmissions? Sorry, satellite television has been around since 1962. The only people who question the event are those who haven't bothered to educate themselves. Did you know that in 2009 NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter returned to the moon and captured high resolution images of the Apollo landing sites? The pics are on NASA's web site.
That time the amount of money spent on this project was a big part of the whole countries GDP. Hundred of thousands of people, tens of thousands of companies were working on it. Now, they are spending way less, and I guess, for a greater profit margin for those few involved. And they are succeeding as well. The Apollo program was not done in a year either.
We had the technology to go and beat the Russians, then we wanted to explore and expand our knowledge of the Moon. Apollo’s 18, 19 and 20 were cancelled due to budget cuts. Apollo’s 15, 16 and 17 were called J missions ie last plans for exploration. They became known as the science missions with the Lunar Rover.

Just a matter of money, and national resolve--no one seems to be able to agree on anything anymore..😢
