The crunch channel with a tube screamer boosting it is *chefs kiss*
I can imagine Mark's vocals behind this... it needs to happen...
Why is Rob the Bob Ross of metal guitar? He just has the most calm and pleasant demeanor in his videos.
👨🏻🎨
Bob + Ross = Rob Boss
Hearing Chimaira style riffs in an early Killswitch tone is a blend I didn't know I needed in my life.
Archaon from the norwegian black metal band 1349 used framus cobra in the early 2000's... The tone is really vicious, LOVE it
Picked up this amp about a year ago. I'm still in love with it, absolute brutality. Unfortunately i've had to put it in the shop recently, and i can't wait to get it back out. Awesome seeing the cobra get some love! I will have a review video out as well as soon as i get this back out. Cheers!
Cool!
I've been dying to get ahold of a cobra for 15+ years. So awesome that you got one. I hope to hear it on some of your stuff so I can live vicariously.
Sounds soo good Rob...love your tones and playing!
Thanks dude!🤘
Them Riffs are FIRE!!!!
@@RomanDido 🤘😝
If you want to know the tube compliment in this particular Cobra (these amps are very tube type sensitive) it has a Genelex NOS 12ax7 in the V1 position, and JJ Tesla 12ax7's in the remaining preamp positions. The power amp has JJ Tesla El34's. Sounds incredible!
That tone is amazing. I had a Dragon I loved, I wish I never sold it.
Cobras are absolute kings of tone, I think they still wipe the floor with half of the boutique amp company offerings you get nowadays.
I'd choose a Framus Cobra over so many modern companies, despite the reliability issues after lengthy single periods of use.
Swhooooosh that cobra sounds crispy and devastating.
Definitely gotta look into finding one of these heads around town.
Alot of hidden equipment just laying around waiting to be purchased in Seattle.
I never heard of these amps. MY GOD! What a TONE. We need amps like this in our lives!
German engineering… like Diezel, Driftwood, Engl, Hughes & Kettner, BluGuitar, Kemper, Lehle, Bogner …
The intro tune! Amazing.
Finally an honest review of the Framus Cobra. I am the owner if a Framus Dragon, I love the Framus amps .. sadly no longer in production 😢
Ohh man that sounds sweet love it Rob
It's weird hearing you're playing with a different tone. I guess I just love your Peavey tone.
I agree with the overdrive comments. This needs a decent drive pedal in front of it and a gate. Would be absolutely killer! Also - FYI I have the matching 4x12 cab for sale if you or anyone is interested. Four 25 Watt Greenback Speakers, same metal tarnishes on the grille.
Watched it yesterday 👊🏼sounds sick man🤘🏻
hey Rob, cool to find your channel... i have a Cobra that I've had for years, and your vid has kicked me in the butt to pull it out and give it a rundown! hope you're well!
James! Legend! What's up man! Great to hear from you! I often think of that time you came to town to work on the Death tribute with us. It's a shame I can't remember what ever happened with that version of Symbolic we did! Hope you're well too man! Cheers🤘
Hey Rob, just want to say that you have four die hard Chimaira fans coming from from Kansas to see you guys in May! Cant wait to be there with the Chimaira family.
Awesome bro!🤘🤘🤘🤘
Hell yeah Rob.. growing your hair out again.. now you can do those guitar tricks with the boys during severed again. Always my favorite part of the shows. That was a call back to when Jim said you didn't like doing that because you didn't have long hair lol.
🤘🤣
Sounds amazing.
King of riffs dropping the hammer!!
🤘😎🔨
That amp screams!
I got one of these with the matching 4x12 cab last year. It can be a bit tricky to dial in sometimes, but it truly is a swiss army knife of an amp. It does Fender-ish cleans and everything from 5150 to Dual Rectifier in the gain territory. I love it!
Only seen them on Guitar magazine. Man, that sound good. Love the crisp highs and mids make the guitar stand out more. 🤘😀
Had a chance to play through a used one many years ago at my local Guitar Center. Loved the sound of it, but everyone I talked to said they are not the best for touring as they can break easily. So passed on it. Kinda wish I still got it.
Everybody always says that Killswitch Engage made these possible. I don't ever remember them playing them, they used Framus Dragon's. Very different sounding head/cab than the Cobra setup. Ken Susi from Unearth used these. He says that they are one of the best sounding amps, but that he never could keep his reliable for touring. He has it in his studio now and says it rocks when stationary. He was constantly having repair issues for it when attempting to tour with it.
Cobra cabs are awesome too. They come with Celestion Greenbacks instead of the Dragon's v30 speakers.
Thanks for the clarification!
@@RobArnoldWorld Thanks for another great video. I always loved your guitar tone/style. It probably subconsciously became a lot of how I play today. I could be wrong on the history of these, but that is how I remember it. At one point for a short while, I had a dragon half stack and even a framus combo. They were both good deals, but I ultimately liked a dirtier gain and were very hard to sell because nobody knew who/what they were. I've always wanted a Cobra though. I've been lucky enough to play some really cool heads however brief.
I think they used cobras because the dragon they used blew up or something can’t remember. Possibly on Rose of Sharyn.
that lead is crunchy.👍🤘
I own a version 2 cobra, not sure what's different between the versions. But that is the most satisfying and frustrating amp I have owned. I so love watching when people flip the notch on. Lol. It's the reaction everyone has. 🤣 I don't know what they were thinking. The most surprising feature to me is the clean channel, it is so good. I did not expect that when I bought mine about 2 years. A great showing of that amp, sounded killer.
Well said!🤘
The notch switch only makes sense when you max the mids. It makes the mids somehow tighter
@t_separator ok, I can see that. I have messed with it a little bit. I have tried using it with an EQ pedal in the front and in the loop. But I normally don't do anything with it.
Absolute beast. I have the amp w/original cab, sounds great w/helix.
Sounds awesome Rob. Always enjoy hearing new riffs from you and style of playing man 🔥🤘
🤘🙏👊
What up Rob. How crazy is it that you’re the reason I tuned to drop C for the first time?
And also the tapping on the Save Ourselves solo was one of the first things I remember blowing my mind.
Really appreciating these videos even if they are 16ish years too late! You’re the man rob
Haha right on man!👊
Love your playing, man! Great channel!
Thanks dude!👊
sounding awesome dude! Cheers Rob! 🤘
Okay, on the recording, scooping the mids sounded AWESOME.
🤷🏻♂️
Damn that blows the peavey away
Keep growing the locks brother. Silly stage will be over in no time.
Framus sounds sic. Who knew!? Not me.
I'll gladly take it off your hands if you're tired of it.
Side note: Who's the fox in the upper right corner, just locking eyes with us all? 😁
Hey I appreciate the encouragement bro!🤘
It does have a sick sound, definitely going to check one out.
Great job on this video! I love your tones through this. Can’t wait until I can find one of these Cobras! 🤘
Wow, man!! Amp sounds SO beast... but the riffs, well, the riffs are fucking SAVAGE!! Miss you bro... Cheers!! =)
Hey cheers Todd! Good to hear from ya man, and I hope you're still tearing it up too man!🤘🎸
What a score! Now you have to get a Dragon to complete the collection. Cheers!
Hi Rob, it's great what you're doing. This amplifies the darkness of the sound . Beautiful.
Great tone ratio! Great video !!
Thanks brother!🤘
Dude you look great with your long hair coming back!
Haha thanks man!😎
Wow. That amp sounds amazing.
Always a good day when you put out a video 👍
Much thanks
Angry Rhythm Face Machine YOU ARE!!!!
Bro that tone is so chunky and lethal!
Ooo my goodness sounds EPIC!!! But the notch sound got that Metal Zone with Crate sound ...aka early Cannibal Corpse!!!
Nice Rob, will be cool to see more videos like this testing amps !
🔥🤘🏻🔥
Love it!!
Rob were coming in from Washington State for Saturday. Which motel 6 is in the best area/ safest area?
Awesome man! I don't know much about the downtown hotel scene, but Jim LaMarca is suggesting the Comfort Inn that is close to the venue. Supposedly they'll have shuttle service to and from as well.🤘
Sounds pretty awesome 🤘🏻
HAD one!!! Dang
Some Fear Factory inspired goodness right there🔥🤘
Indeed!🤘
I’m loving it! Riff master!
👊
glad to see this amp get demoed feel like it gets forgotten now days.
Sick amp!! I just found out about these maybe like 7 months ago. I would love to own one of these
🤘😎
Gotta do a VHT pitbull next. That was popular then as well.
The notch switch i would guess would be really cool if you have a guitar speaker that has more midrange than people would really know what to do with. As an example, i've got a 2x12 cabinet loaded up with Eminence CV-75 speakers, which are notorious for being ridiculously honky. However, with amps that can achieve a mroe scooped sound like my Randall RG80 combo, a Dual Rectifier with the treble cranked slightly, or even this amp with the notch switch, you can really notice that those speakers fill out that scoop in the midrange.
Rob, anymore tips on EQing guitar tracks? How to make them sound fuller and clearer? Just recorded a few DI tracks there and done the HMF drop out but feel like its missing something to give it that punch!
Much love buddy
Without seeing exactly what you have going on, I can only offer some vague suggestions...
-Make sure your main rhythm tracks are panned out left and right 100%, and try to make them the ONLY things panned out 100% in your mix.
-After all is said and done with cutting unwanted frequencies from my guitar sound, I often like to then add a +2db shelf at 6k to brighten things up.
-tight playing is important, but if guitar tracks are edited too precisely, they lose weight and depth in your mix when combined.
@@RobArnoldWorld i will we transfer you and example of it soon buddy
Rob going for the Tom G. Warrior hairstyle lol
🤘🤣 I had to look him up!
Hey Rob, I had a Cobra with that faceplate blemishing. I ended up taking it full black face mod. Looked amazing; you use drum cymbal polish.
I heard about that! What happens with the text on the faceplate? Like all the numbers and letters? They're currently black. So if the whole thing turns black...
@@RobArnoldWorld nah that wasn't an issue for me. Still completely legible.
I’d love to hear an overdrive in front of this amp. Gain turned down to about 1/2 with a ts9 in front I bet it would just be a throat punch.
Mike's SOLDANO SLO100 electrical circuit will live forever ;)
I’d kill for a Framus Dragon. Old school Napalm Death. One of my favourite guitar tones ever. Near impossible to find these days. Finding any Framus (at least in North America) is fucking rare.
But seriously, listen to “Twist the Knife” by Napalm Death. Even if you don’t like grindcore, you can’t tell me that isn’t one of the most beastly guitar tones you’ve ever heard. Especially in the middle at the “unborn suffer the norm” part. I could rewind that all day.
Killer amp Rob. Sounds like a 50 watt amp head ?. Just love the tone that comes out of it. And with three channels. Your gonna have lots of fun with it. The opening riff that you played is that something new ? My reason for asking is that it would suit a song that I've writtern lyrics to. Got to say that it's a first to see/hear this amp. So cheers for another great video.
Cool Darren! 99% of the time I just create a song from scratch for any of these demo's I'm doing. Whether it's an amp, an amp sim, or a guitar I'm demo'ing, I just fire it up and see how it inspires me! Whatever comes out is what I begin creating!🎸
@@RobArnoldWorld I feel the same when ever an idea comes for a song to write. I think of gthe riff at the same time. So glad to know that your demoing everything Rob.
I had one of these briefly. Did a video of it on my channel as well. Used to belong to Zack from Whitechapel and he sold it to a studio friend here in town and we ended up using it a bit for Straight Line Stitch stuff and I just fell in love with it and then years later I bought it and ended up having some issues with it so I got my money back but one thing you should try.....and research/get some other opinions before doing this of course but I read and then tried really juicing the channel volume and it really does open the amp up and makes it not so thin sounding. I did this and was like woah holy shit lol Sounded so much better but then it started doing weird shit like crackling in and out and i'd tap the top of the head and it'd cut in and out but I think there was just something wrong with it. I don't think it was a symptom of me cranking the channel volume because I read a bunch of people online talking about that being like the cheat code for this amp. Super cool head though.
So agree with the tip to be sure to crank the channel volume: since 3/4 it becomes far less fizzy and solid sounding! I have the Fragon and that works great. IMHO, the crunch channel cranked with a TS as a boost is the most insane and brutal sound i can get with this crazy amp!
Hairs getting longer.... looks nice man🤘
🤘😎
So sick man :)
I don't know if it's an oddity on my gen1 model, the bass and mids, and the treble and presence seem highly interactive on the lead channel. Pushing the bass up seems to saturate it and move it more into the mids, and the mid knob starts to change the shape of that curve. The presence and treble seem to have a similar effect, push the treble and use the presence to shape it, or push the presence and use the treble to shape it. For recording, I will often time reach for a bass between 9 and 10, mids between 0-2, and treble and presence at 7.5~. This is much more chewy and mid forward sound than the settings would indicate (maybe why they added a notch switch). The channel volume will also affect the top end. I run mine pretty high (7-8) and lower master volume. I tend to think of the effects mix as a gain character knob. At 0 it seems more scratchy, at noon it is hyper aggressive, full it's more smooth. The crunch and clean is more normal but still some interaction.
Also, cymbal cleaner will oxidize the face plate, and is typically what is done for the black face plates everyone seemed to be doing in the late 2000s.
I've also been hearing from lots of dudes that these amps can be very touchy. I guess it's in their nature!
Great amp blend with 6505 and job done👻 but use channel 2 as lead is over gained at those settings
I prefer the dragon myself but both it and the cobra are such fantastic underrated amps. Lov'em!
Love my Cobra! \m/
I find the Cobra is a Sick studio amp
Trademark tarnished Cobra faceplate included!
Haha yep! That's what I'm hearing!
Sounds absolutely killer and I love that tone! According to Ken Susi of Unearth you’re going to want to only fire that thing up for 45 minutes a session or you’ll cook it.
Wow! That's not very good news! haha
@@RobArnoldWorld I was watching one of Ken’s live streams and he was talking about how they went through those amps constantly on tour because they would blow the transformer (I believe that’s what he said the issue was). It is definitely a monster of an amp.
That's crazy. guy in my band would use them and we would practice for hours on end and never had an issue that I can remember.
Hey Rob... Have you ever tried dialing an amp by turning all the eq knobs to max and working by reduction? Considering most eq on amps are passive, I can get better results. Maybe a new idea for a video?
Interesting!
Had one of these years ago, and certainly is a beast of an amp, but the sound capabilities on this thing is very sensitive to tubes and speakers, at least more than any other amps I've ever owned. I had it with a Mesa 4x12 with V30's and apparently these things really shine with greenbacks, which come standard with the matching Cobra cabinet. Always was something in the tone I couldn't dial out, which ultimately led to be selling it, because I was more attached to my Mesa 4x12 (which I still own).
The only feature I found these amps lacking was a footswitchable FX loop. But man, do they ever look sharp, with that red glow!
I dig the red glow as well!
Have you compared this to the STL model? Kazrog did a Cobra model many and many years back. Would love to know how you think of it as I’ve seen you use STL AmpHub. I found Cobra is like a refined Recto.
It only recently came to my attention that STL has a version! I'll have to check it out!
The Kazrog cobra model for Thermionik was actually based on my specific amp I did samples. Most people downloaded it as the free amp, but a lot of people seem to have forgotten about that whole suite.
@@ravensongstudios I’ve been a long Kazrog user. I have the suite floating around my drive but moved to VST3 and found while it sounds good as far as resource usage it’s a bit dated. I’m hoping Shane will release an update if some sort. The 5150 model Kazrog is incredible so I always keep an eye out on anytime I see a Kazrog post.
What kind of mic stand/clamp is that rob? I haven’t seen one like that. Great demo too!
Thanks dude! It's one that hangs from the top of the cab, in between the head and cab. We used them during our touring days because it would eliminate a mic stand in front of the cab, which not only takes up room, but gets frequently bumped and moved!
Its a beast for sure. I always liked the Dragon a little better.
👍🤘☺️🫂☺️🙏🙌
Please try Bare Knuckle pickups!
Painkiller in drop C or B with this amp = taste
You are also growing your hair? Me too... : D
I had a nasty-ass Framus LP copy 40+ years ago. My uncle found it in a dumpster.
I was a kid...it could've been a decent guitar for all i knew.
I spray painted it orange and put black leopard spots on it. 🤣
Nice!

@@RobArnoldWorld cool...hey thanks for the STL demos..both me and my friend got ToneHUb and it slays.
@@NickArcolla Nice!
Thanks for making me want to play guitar... but my left pinky is broken from a car accident. So now I'm bummed out.
Sorry to hear! I don't really know the whole story, but supposedly Tony Iommi from Sabbath CUT OFF one of his fingers in a workshop accident or something right as BS got their record deal and started taking off. So.....😝
@@RobArnoldWorld It was his fingertips but yeah. That caused him to detune and that's what gave Sabbath their sound. I'm off work because of it and I am getting stir crazy.
@@Smasher-Devourer Get well soon!
Thanks Rob
I got one of these, mint condition. Fickle amp, but great.
I have that amp on my stl amphub, I wonder does that amp sounds so similar to the real one that you're playing rob?
I'll have to test it and find out!
@@RobArnoldWorld cool.
Have you considered making a RA5 with the Evertune instead of Floyd?
I've actually already made the RA-5! Check it out! ruclips.net/video/zCK1Q5SnjnY/видео.html
So the next one would have to be the RA-6, and honestly I don't think I'd do it with an Evertune. I love the Evertunes, but I consider them a tool for specific jobs, especially because I use a whammy bar all the time. So while I'm into acquiring more Evertune equipped guitars, I don't think I'd put one on a Custom Shop guitar.
@@RobArnoldWorld ohh ok. I thought your last one was the RA4 my bad. Know not have 1 evertune but I love it.
@@calitheguitarist I did hear a rumor that Evertune is doing a floyd type bridge, so we'll see!🤞
Hey man sounds killer! Just wondering do you measure pickup height for your EMGs or just whatever sounds good?
Thanks dude! I don't do anything scientifically or anything. I just adjust their heights so that they're close to the strings, without interfering whatsoever. I also tilt the treble side of my pickups sliiiiightly higher, with hope that my leads will cut through the mix a little better. 👌
@@RobArnoldWorld thanks for the response! Huge fan of Chimaira and your playing 🤘🏼
@@curtismac17 I appreciate it man!👊
Didn't LOG use these back in the days?
I wouldn't be surprised!
I don’t know about Willy but Mark used one for a small bit. He said he didn’t really gel with it, and I was lucky enough to be on the bands first forum when he mentioned it. I got a hell of a deal on it and the matching cab. Apparently there are a few videos somewhere of him using it, but I wasn’t able to find them (only people mentioning seeing them with dead links).
Is it just me or is this a pretty fizzy amp? When you say it has a "Crate Death Metal" sound, to me I hear that throughout, the constant high-end fizz when using a lot of gain.
Sounds good. What speakers used here?
That's my Marshall 1960BV cab! I'm pretty sure the speakers are Celestion G12's.
You can learn more about it here if you're interested! sweetwater.sjv.io/Marshall1960BV
@@RobArnoldWorld Thanks. What about it amplifier using for solo staff? With playing some NAM profiles and watching videos it seems it sounds right but with a blurred attack. What you can say about this?
Unfortunately I don't understand the question!@@alexmortar
