Just bought my PRS DGT SE in McCarty Tobacco Sunburst. You conveyed so well what I felt in the store. I’m really a first position beginner and trying to get better old guy. I’m just so inspired by the sound and feel. I have been enrolled in Tim Pierce beginner course and didn’t do two lessons. I’ve done 12 lessons today. This instrument deserves a better player than I am currently. No regrets in spending the money on such a quality guitar. I’m not a lawyer or doctor just an elementary teacher that wants to learn how to play for myself and maybe some family at the house. The versatility of the guitar is simply phenomenal. Thanks for all your work in demonstrating and filming my dream guitar. Your skill level shows off your hard work and a PRS gem.
Picked up one of these a month ago. Got it for 715 as it was a demo model. Luthier said it looked perfect and he was super impressed by it. Set the action to my liking, swapped strings. Love it! It plays and sounds amazing to me. Thanks for the great video.
I have the gold PRS DGT SE, and I 100% agree with your review. The quality is excellent, and while it's not a cheap $200 instrument, it offers surprising quality. It's not easy to find a guitar like this for under $1,000. The tone is fantastic, the sustain and comfort are excellent. I'm really happy with this purchase.
This SE is fantastic. I had the DGT core, and the SE version is awesome. Im very happy with it and dont feel any rush to go back to a Core. Tats how good it is. Hope they keep the high quality and consistency on this model. Very good PRS, fantastic job.
I just purchased the burst guitar. I dig the birds. Can't wait. Very cool guitar. I have three other Se's. Honest to God you just can't beat these builds. In my opinion they are producing the best offshore builds money can buy. I also have to say hats off to EVH. Their offshore builds are awesome as well.
Great review, thanks! I was already surprised that the SE DGT and the SE McCarty594 were not mentioned in the Epi’s to buy video. The DGT is the perfect in-between that sits between the Custom 24 and the McCarty594, great addition to any collection.
Excellent review, as usual. However, I thought the Marty Schwartz ES 335 sounded better (we all have our own preferences). I wanted to try the MS 335 after your review, and bought it on the spot. I agreed with everything you had to say about it. So, if any PRS fans read this, take John’s word and buy one through their link if you think you want one. PRS makes very fine guitars, I just liked the Epiphone.
My ears can't get past electronics. I hope the SE's eventually come with the CTS/Core style pots and pickups. American PRS pickups have a clarity I don't hear in the "S" pickups. Great review. PRS SE are definitely well made!
I have one and a 2 real core prs guitars it’s cool and you can play it at a gig and enjoy it ( but) the core models feel and sound better if your on a budget for $750 it’s pretty darn cool or save $750 more dollars go get a used prs McCarty feel and tone for $1500 this is the question will I keep it I’m not that convinced yet my real ones 20 plus years now
Got my DGT SE Goldtop recently after having it on order for several months. It is a very nice guitar. I really like the weight. Two things as a slight negative, The moon inlays are a little dark for my liking. I'm used to seeing the dots on the fretboard and the moons are a bit hard to see. But I like the moons better than the birds myself. The other thing I've noticed is how much out of tune the D & G strings are after transporting the guitar. Once tuned it stays in tune. One other thing that is probably not unique with the DGT is there is limited room to put a clip on tuner on the headstock. This is my first PRS so wasn't prepared for that. It works but not as easily as on a Fender or Gibson. One thing I don't remember anyone mentioning that I think is so cool. The fretboard as a thin strip of wood on each side that contrasts just a bit. Unless you are holding the guitar I don't think you can notice. Kind of like wood binding down the neck. Wonderful guitar.
I have the Goldtop model and absolutely love it. The feel, the sound, and the looks/weight work great for me. I love the split sound too. When split they are not a normal 50/50 split. According to PRS the split it more like a 75/25 split which makes a big difference for the better IMO. My other guitars are getting jealous. A couple of them may be getting sold too. 🙂
Ordered today, been checking online retailers regularly waiting for them to be in stock and not backordered. Cannot wait, the DGT is hands down the PRS I've most wanted, so I was totally stoked when the SE was announced. The features, the control layout, pickups, DG neck profile, trem bridge, freakin' gold top, everything. I think it's the only SE that has a black back and black headstock, which looks way better than the natural back and headstock IMO. To me the DGT is the best sounding and best looking PRS.
PRS DGT is a nice guitaf for rock, metal etc but I play mostly jazz and pop etc so I don’t see it as the best for my needs I went with the McCarty fixed bridge that covers it all for me. I was going to buy a DGT to have but since I own over 300 guitars I can’t justify the money at this point to have a guitar I probably won’t use that much, but that temptation is always there. Lol like alcohol addiction.
@@jerryterrestrial 2 different beast . pick/ups are way different and one has a trem . . i'd sell my ZM before my DGT if it came down to it though . . i do love them both , like the satin neck on ZM . .thats the only improvement i'd make to DGT . .strange factoid both came perfectly set up , i mean balls on accurate @ every set -up metric . . dont know if i was much help, lol
SE DGT implies the existence of a SE DGH or SE DGS for Hardtail or Stoptail, and if that ever comes to pass I'll be first in line. (and yes I know DGT is the name of the core model too) Also, I believe it's a coil tap not a split, meaning that it still hits both coils but midway through the windings, reducing the volume without introducing hum.
Good review (as usual of course)! Actually, there isn’t a McCarty in the SE; there IS a McCarty 594 in the SE line. The DGT (core) grew out of another core model; the McCarty. The McCarty is actually quite a bit different from the McCarty 594. The McCarty is a 2 knob layout and I think the neck carve is a pattern regular. Really, the DGT has some significant departures from the original McCarty and both are significantly different from the McCarty 594, which has a pattern vintage neck carve (very different from both the pattern regular and DGT carves). And the 594 has a 4 knob layout like Les Paul, but with it’s coil split feature give 8 different sounds compared to the 6 for both the DGT and the McCarty. The pickups on the DGT are very different from both McCarty models. And 594 scale feels more Les Paul than the DGT. The DGT frets play very differently from both McCarty models All 3 are definitely different guitars that are each great.
well .. this guitar is probably my next one :D Thx a lot for the detailed review. The color is amazing on your video. On most others it look just bland yellow.
Wait, the pickups can be individually split? The marketing says there's a single split for both pickups... If they can be individually split + the individual volumes, that makes this one versatile guitar indeed!
These DGT's are supposed to have "bigger frets" than say, the PRS SE Custom 24. Can you *PLEASE* address the size difference? Are they taller & wider or taller & narrow like what Fender is doing these days? Are they like the frets on a Fender Performer Strat/Tele which feel huge? Please address this. Thanks.
I already have a Gibson LP Traditional, a Fender mim jh sign... I'm looking for a nice Prs Se which one would you suggest me considering the other 2 guitars? Now we have SE: Dgt, Ce, custom 24, SAS, McCarty 594, Pauls
Paul said he is going to be putting American pickups in the S2 line, but I am not sure when yet. If they're not available yet, I would choose the SE DGT. I own one and play it personally all the time, fantastic guitars. Thanks for watching!
I have one of these personally and absolutely love it. Silver Sky is great too, can't go wrong but of course it's your preference for humbuckers vs single coils mainly. Thanks for watching
The only genuine rosewood is Brazilian Rosewood. Interestingly, Pau Ferro resembles Brazilian Rosewood more closely in sound than Indian Rosewood. Ignorance can indeed be blissful.
This guitar is so not worth the hype. Maybe I just got a bad one, but compared to my LP and 335, these humbuckers are super muddy. Apples to oranges, my single coil and P90 guitars are also infinitely better sounding with much more clarity. The trem system is totally unresponsive. I prefer my strat trem by orders of magnitude. The coil split is worthless. I cannot tell you how much I despise this guitar. It is soulless and boring to play - even if is beautifully designed. Maybe I'm just not a PRS guy. Great case though, and will be a decent starter guitar for my son because the playability is ok.
I've had mine about a month. Not really impressed. Seems kinda bland to me. The coil split should be called a volume cut, that's about all I can tell it does. Marshall DSL 40 hates it. Peavy Valve King 50 tolerates it. I don't like it as much as I do my Squire 40th anniversary Jazzmaster. My new Yamaha Revstar P90's blows this PRS out of the water. No comparison. Sad I spent $900 on this.
Maybe because even the PRS website abbreviated it in their promotion. “The PRS SE DGT (David Grissom Trem) brings David Grissom’s signature model to the SE Series for the first time.”

It is not a black back and headstock. It's actually a very dark brown. Hard to tell but with a bright light it can be seen. Just beautiful guitars.
Best SE? That's a pretty high bar. Love my Zach Myers
