Thank you so much for this video! As a first time mom with a preemie that especially needed tummy time to strengthen her back I felt super overwhelmed. This video gave me a lot of guidance for where to start!
Thank you S and congratulations at your soon to be here baby! It's so great that you already have educated yourself on tummy time. I'm so glad you found the video helpful!
I learned a lot from this video, and I love to learn. My baby girl sometimes has trouble with acid reflux, so after feedings I’m always making sure that I hold her upright for around 30 minutes.
What a lovely, helpful video! I'm so tired of "baby must-haves!" from girls in their 20s with fake eyelashes and poor grammar. I learned a lot from this video, and I love to learn -- especially regarding how to facilitate my baby's development. Reminding viewers not to wait for the "perfect" time was stellar advice that hit close to home. Thank you for a great video 😊
Hello Pearly. Thank you for the compliment! I see you put it up 8 months ago, so I imagine your baby may be crawling by now! Thanks again, I'm so glad it was helpful.
Hello Ce Ce. I hear you! There are several underlying reasons why what used to be common knowledge and passed down from generation to generation has gone by the wayside and classes and information are needed. A major reason is the advertising, pressure, and marketing aimed at new parents to purchase and heavily use baby containers such as swings, bouncy seats, and other equipment which interrupts typical development and sets the scene for head shape issues. The issue is so widespread that there is now a condition termed "Container Baby Syndrome". There are other reasons, but this is a major one. We have seen this issue steadily increase over the last 15 years and everyday in our clinic we have parents that say "I wish I had known". Videos such as this are an effort to equip those parents who are interested and desire to know. I hope that helps explain why there is a need.
My little brother loved to watch the dogs and eventually he started worming after them soon after eventually he started crawling after them especially when they where sleeping. Poor Rufus old hound wasn’t able to sleep for years.
Hello Chris. What a sweet story. The love you have for your brother and your old hound dog shines through! Your story also beautifully illustrates the miracle of development. Your brother saw something that he was curious about (using his visual system and his muscles to lift his head to see). The dog's smell and sounds and eye contact and his shiny fur or collar, basically everything about Rufus, probably motivated your brother. Part of what I like about the story is the "payoff" for your brother. Rufus wasn't cheering him on as parents often do. When we cheer and clap sometimes it is just pure joy and sharing. Sometimes though it is used as a motivator. When over used, it creates a baby that does things to get applause and approval and the baby misses out on the pure joy of movement. The baby also misses out on starting to build his "persistence" muscle and the development of curiosity as a driver of our actions. Your brother went from an itty, bitty baby lifting his head off the ground to see Rufus to eventually squirming and then crawling to get to him, creating complex motor plans and satisfying his curiosity! It's a wonderful miracle. As you say, perhaps not so wonderful for Rufus! Thank you so much for sharing!

I do tummy time with my daughter, and she usually does great. I use the boppy pillow at times, and also do it on my belly, while I’m reclined and that allows her to raise her head up. What I do worry about, is how she spits up. My baby girl sometimes has trouble with acid reflux, so after feedings I’m always making sure that I hold her upright for around 30 minutes. During the day, this makes tummy time difficult to fit in - mainly because I fear it will cause her spit ups to worsen. If they were small spit ups, I wouldn’t worry. But there’s been times she loses her breath. And I’m afraid that position will make it worse. Are there any tips to help prevent reflux in babies with tummy time? Is it best to do tummy time before feedings, or so long after she feeds?
Melissa, it's OK, if she spits a lot, as a video says. My baby girl also spits up a lot, mostly during the day. You shouldn't worry whether the tummy time will worsen it. You should do the tummy time before feeding. I read that it's best to do that 20 minutes before feeding and 30 minutes ( i think it's minimum) after feeding. Good luck!
Sounds like my baby, he has GERD. But his favorite position to sleep is on my chest and I count it as tummy time. After 30 mins of more upright sitting I lay down with him on my chest
Hello Shabana. Tummy time can begin as soon as your doctor gives you the okay. Usually it is fine to begin the day the baby is born and is a natural part of caring for your baby.
Hello. I can't tell if you are kidding or are perhaps distressed that your baby cries. Please note that we used 3 different babies for this video and they received lots of rest breaks off camera. If you have any concerns about your baby please talk to your pediatrician.
I'm mom of 5, gramma of 18. Sleep babies on their tummies from birth - their neck, shoulders, back and arms get strong and their brains process right away that they can hold themselves up and turn their heads. They get out gas, burps and can soothe themselves. They don't have to wait for you to do everything for them. They can turn their own head and look around. They sleep more soundly too : ) Happy babies = happy mommies! This simplifies your life so no need to create "tummy time" since they are doing it from the start. Out of our 18 grandchildren - ages 5 months old to 10 years, the ones who were kept on their backs were 6 months behind developmentally compared to the tummy sleepers. The tummy slept babies are stronger, more capable, alert and happier. If you wait to pick a time to put your baby on it's tummy you have already retarded their growth and brain processing so it will be a chore instead of their natural growth pattern. Think it over. You'll be glad you did. Happy mothering!!
Janet Schwarz I really like your approach to this. It seems to me that babies are getting farther behind in their development as we go along. The whole reason they don’t recommend it any more is the apparent risk for SIDS, but I don’t see why a baby would be at risk of smothering themselves if they had been put on their tummy since day one. My daughter has always preferred to sleep on her tummy or her side, just like mommy. She has excellent neck strength and control at 2 months. You sound like an excellent mother and grandmother, your babies are very lucky 😊
@@runningformylifeful So wonderful your baby girl is a happy and capable 2 month old! - and you are coming alongside as a great mom as she grows : ) It appears that interventions that are intended to "help + protect" babies actually overcomplicate a very simple process in a baby's growth. So glad you have discovered this! Happy mothering : )
I agree 100% I put my kids on their tummy fr their strings fall off and it been working well my 4 month stand so Firm on her legs on the floor like she's ready to walk....so what your is true.
Thank you Allen! Our clinical director recently did one. It's very informative, but no adorable babies in this one: facebook.com/CarolinaKinderDevelopment/videos/812760095729044/UzpfSTQyODMwMjMwMzg4Mzk2MDoyMDY3NzgyMjQ5OTM1OTQ5/
Hello. I assume you meant that in a kidding manner. In a serious vein though, parents are not getting information that previously they may have gotten from grandparents, neighbors, and pediatricians. We hope that when watching this video, a new parent might almost feel as if they've just had a visit from someone who really knows babies and that the parent feels equipped to help their baby develop well and have a normal headshape (for all the medical reasons reasons why this matters). Every single day in our occupational and physical therapy clinic we work with parents who went to many prenatal classes and read many books but were not exposed to this information. Instead they were marketed to and own and heavily use devices such as swings and Snoos and Merlins that we strongly feel disturb normal development (in babies who are vulnearble). We want to help fill the educational gap for parents!
The babies in the video are 2-3 months old. Tummy time can be challenging! I hope the video gives you some good ideas of ways to do it so that your baby starts to like it!
My sister-in-law keeps her one-month-old baby in tummy time for a half hour twice a day. Even if the baby starts fussing and crying, she leaves the baby like that saying tummy time is good for their muscle development. Is this too long? I'm concerned (never had kids of my own).
I think it's too long! Not worth upsetting the baby to that extent! What's next? Making the baby lift five-pound dumbbells by age two..with all the muscles?
13:01 See link at bottom of screen toward the end of the video But the link says page not found when I type it out www.nichd.nih.gov/publications/pubs/Documents/safe_sleep_general_brochure_2012.pdf
Hello Kimberly. I agree about how wonderful that elephant is. I recently tried to but a new one but could not find one! It was by Fisher-Price. The dalmation in the link below looks similar however I"m not sure it will roll independently (or will need you to push it). If you find the one in the video, please pass on where you found it! I'd love to get another one! Please note, we do not receive any funding from amazon, etc to promote their toys. www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Disney-Amazing-Animals-Rolling/dp/B00ADEWN8K/ref=sr_1_56?keywords=rolling&qid=1552391206&s=toys-and-games&sr=1-56
Mine is 11.5 months old, doesn't crawl on her own. Can sit well since 6 months. But never went on tummy. Rarely she slept on my papa's tummy. Now she doesn't cry if put on tummyy but immediately gets straight, but cires if forced or persuaded to stay on tummy. How do I get her to crawl, move? She stands n walks with my support.
Hello Vidhya. Thank you for watching the video. I am assuming she also doesn't roll alot either. To help your baby to start moving more and crawling, help her go from sitting to side sitting. Put a toy she likes to the side that to get it she has to stretch and move and then you can help her shift her arms and legs around so she is in side sitting. She needs to get comfortable with putting weight on her arms. I also recommend trying to find an occupational or physical therapist to work with her and teach you ways to help her at home. With a therapist helping, I'll bet she'd start to move more within a few weeks! You are a good mrther to care and to be reaching out and asking these questions to help her!
How old is this baby? My son is 3 1/2 months old and I do this on every alternate days. Is this enough? How much tummy time should I give to my baby on daily basis and when exactly?
Hello and thank you for watching. We use short tables with mats on them. The therapist or the parent always has a hand on the baby to prevent any falls!
in our place there is no practice of tummy time so i never did. but i am worried now as my baby is 4&1/2 month old and still can't hold her neck properly. what to do?
Hello Sabrina. Make tummy time part of your baby's routines, something like after every diaper change roll your baby onto her or his tummy. Also, incorporate it into burping by lying on your lap. As you walk around your house or apt, carry your baby on his or her tummy. Basically anytime your baby is awake try and incorporate it into what you are doing. I hope this helps! Congratulations on your baby!
My son is 3 months and 2 weeks old He is not able to lift hid head or balance his head yet when in upright position. He is lean and underweight. Is it still advisbale for him to tummy time even he is lean?
I don’t know if you still respond but my daughter is 7 weeks rightnow and I barely get time for tummy time because of her sleeping and eating. She’s REALLY big and eats 5 oz and then either sleeps or wants to be entertained but she has bad spit up and I don’t want her spitting up on her stomach. Whenever I do find time though, she immediately starts screaming her head off. She seems to hate tummy time no matter if I use pillows or put her on my chest. Is there any way to calm them? I don’t want to torture her.
Hello Angeriiwater and congratulations on your baby! I"m glad she is a good eater. I agree about not torturing her! I'm so glad you are trying hard to do tummy time! It is really good for her development. Sometimes sidelying can be a step towards getting to sidelying. Also, when she first wakes up, don't take her out of her crib right away but instead gently and slowly roll her to her side. After a little time there, gently and slowly roll her to her tummy. Vary how you talk to her. If you are very exagerrated and tend to talk alot and give her lots of verbal encouragement, try being very quiet and let her experience her body moving without alot of verbal encouragement around her. I don't know you or your style or your daughter, so you will need to experiment. When you say she wants to be entertained . . . I'm not sure what you provide her during this time. If you fill me in, I"m happy to give my thoughts on ways to make this time engaging for her. That time after a baby first wakes up can be golden in terms of her learning and development (so much development happens during these early months). Remember that you are in charge, so if she is wanting to be entertained by sitting in her swing and looking at a video and you feel this is not good for her (it isn't), then you have the option of changing that routines. (Container Baby Syndrome). Save something she really loves looking at for when she is on her tummy. A mirror or your face is usually really desirable! I hope something in here helps! Keep chipping away at making tummy time enjoyable for her, you are on the right track! A few minutes throughout the day adds up.

Sue Lira I'm curious, did your baby meet lessons milestones at the rate doctors expect? No judgement, every baby and family is different. We didn't start right away and I'm trying not to feel too guilty.
Hello Sue, I'm late in responding but you bring up an important part of development. It is quite true that there is no rush to push a baby to do anything. There is however a rush to provide a baby with the just right challenge. There is a big difference between a parent propping an infant in a walker to try to make them walk sooner and a parent who wants to play with their infant in a developmentally supportive manner. A tremendous amount of brain growth and connections still happening, even in the first few weeks after birth. A baby who spends some awake time on her tummy and then rolls around 3-4 months then crawls around 5-8 months will be exploring her environment. That is crucial for development. Thank you for bringing this up. Susan
Help, my baby face plants and cries the whole time. I don't know what to do. His head is very floppy. I'm a first time parent and didn't even know about tummy time until the pediatrician brought it up at the two month checkup. In these examples the babies are already holding their heads up, so I'm not sure what mine is supposed to look like. Might just go back to the pediatrician.
Hello @lovelyPanda and congratulations on your baby! I’m not sure sure how you are getting him on his tummy. It often is a huge help if the baby is on his back, and then you slowly roll him to his side and then to his tummy. All the while you are on the floor with him making eye contact and gentle clucking or clicking noises or singing to him. Also try laying in your back with a pillow under your head and then put him in your chest. Keep giving it a try throughout the day in tiny little doses! There could be an in person tummy time class in your area which might be good. Oh and not to worry at this point about him not lifting his head. And yes, go back to your pediatrician if you have more concerns! Wishing you the best! Pathways.Org also has some great teaching videos!
@@susanklemm5505 Hello! I wanted to give you an update. My baby is doing tummy time and lifting his head nicely! I'm so happy and glad we kept trying. Thank you so much for the video and advice 😊 Take care!
My baby is 2 week and 2 days old and his umbilical stump is not fine yet..will it be ok to do tummy time? Right after birth the nurse place him on me though, still scared due to his unheal umbilical stump.... Please help.. By the way love your video
Hello Siami and congratulations on your baby! It is probably fine, as you said he laid on you right after birth. Go ahead and give your pediatrician a call and be sure it's okay. I"m so glad the video was helpful!
Thought of sending a baby to day care is a terrifying and horrible though. No one cares about your baby like you do. It isn't normal to pay people to watch your baby. How did humanity survive without RUclips people telling you how to raise your kid.
Hello and congratulations on your baby! Unless you pediatrician has recommended otherwise, please start tummy time as soon as possible. Just gently and slowly roll him over from his back to his tummy for a few minutes while you are with him and he is awake. Enjoy these special moments with him!
I think it's more hearing your voice speaking, building up the language center of their brain, making all those neural connections. So just talking and singing are fine too
@@RavensDryad Excellent point Ravens. Talking and singing are wonderful. Adding in the parent or caregiver's face and eye contact and it's perfect! Babies love to explore with their eyes. Melinda Burge They aren't listening for a plot line in a story, but they do love to look at the contrast of black and white shapes and faces. Try it out every day for a week and you'll even start to notice the baby has preferences for certain images. Have fun with your baby!
Hello Qinory. Yes, it is fine to begin tummy time for a 5 week old. Even a newborn baby can do tummy time. The exception would be if your doctor does not think it would be good, but that is rare. I hope you and your baby enjoy it. Congratulations!
Hello Levz, Congratulations on your baby. The SIDs guidelines recommend not using a pillow for sleep. However, if you mean something like a boppy pillow that you place under your baby's chest while she or he is doing tummy time and you are right there watching your baby, that is fine. Try tummy time in various positions - on a boppy pillow; in your arms; flat on the floor; in your lap; etc. Again, congratulations!
Hello Meeper. Start much sooner than 8 weeks. Ask your doctor, usually right after birth is a good time! The baby is born and is placed on you . . . and will be on her or his tummy. Just be sure she or he is awake and you are right there with her or him. Many wishes for joy!

Thank you for sharing. How old are the babies in the video? My baby just turned 3 months but still hates tummy time....
The babies in the video are 2-3 months old. Tummy time can be challenging! I hope the video gives you some good ideas of ways to do it so that your baby starts to like it!
That last name, though.
funnily, it means "hug" in Norwegian;)
Thank you for your education.
You are welcome. I hope it was helpful.
How does this differ with preemies?
Looked like she was plotting 😂
My sister-in-law keeps her one-month-old baby in tummy time for a half hour twice a day. Even if the baby starts fussing and crying, she leaves the baby like that saying tummy time is good for their muscle development. Is this too long? I'm concerned (never had kids of my own).
I think it's too long! Not worth upsetting the baby to that extent! What's next? Making the baby lift five-pound dumbbells by age two..with all the muscles?
@@kaladwarakanath5503 I agree. It just bothers me. I'll mention this post to her. Her baby definitely does get upset.
@@fitzcademere7979 It would bother me too if I saw it. Parents get carried away by theories sometimes.

In which week i can start tummy time?
Hello Tehsina. As long as it's okay with your baby's doctor, it is fine to start tummy time from birth on. Congratulations on your baby!
Where's the PDF she mentions at the end?

Where you get the second elephant it’s so cute and perfect. I want to get one for my baby for tummy time as well
Hello Kimberly. Please note, we do not receive any funding from amazon, etc to promote their toys. www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Disney-Amazing-Animals-Rolling/dp/B00ADEWN8K/ref=sr_1_56?keywords=rolling&qid=1552391206&s=toys-and-games&sr=1-56

is it possible the head changed during 2 year old
Good job that baby girl did not fall off that table
Thank you Ildiko. I kept my hand on her!
This baby is a cutie pies
When is it safe to start tummy time?
Are the kids on table?
Hello and thank you for watching. We use short tables with mats on them. The therapist or the parent always has a hand on the baby to prevent any falls!
in our place there is no practice of tummy time so i never did. but i am worried now as my baby is 4&1/2 month old and still can't hold her neck properly. what to do?
Hello Linthoi. Congraulations on your baby. Please mention this to your doctor. Physical or occupational therapy may help.

How many times for tummy time in a day for 2 months baby
Hello Sabrina. Make tummy time part of your baby's routines, something like after every diaper change roll your baby onto her or his tummy. Also, incorporate it into burping by lying on your lap. As you walk around your house or apt, carry your baby on his or her tummy. Basically anytime your baby is awake try and incorporate it into what you are doing. I hope this helps! Congratulations on your baby!
Very helpful
Adorable twins!
I agree Kala. Thank you for watching. I hope it was helpful!

I started tummy time at 5 months.... I don't see the rush
Sue Lira I'm curious, did your baby meet lessons milestones at the rate doctors expect? No judgement, every baby and family is different. We didn't start right away and I'm trying not to feel too guilty.
Sue Lira: I agree. Parents tend to push babies! Babies do things on their own eventually!
Agry with you..i wouldn't touch baby until 8 weeks
Susan
My bubba is 10 weeks im stressed cause he doesnt like tummy time on the ground im panicking cause of the pressure to have baby do it
My baby is sleeping most of the time so i don't get to do a lot of tummy time. She is 3 months now how much time needed now that she's 3 months
Wow you must be very lucky. My son only sleeps 2 hours at day (but the whole night he does great) and wants to be entertained the rest of the day xD

At what month do I keep my baby head down
Hello and congratulations on your baby! by about 10 weeks most babies can keep their head up in tummy time most of the time. hope that helps!

Both of my babies rolled over in their isolets right after their deliveries
Congratulations on your babies!
Absolutely helpful video! ❤️
Thank you Barbie! So very glad to hear that.
Thought of sending a baby to day care is a terrifying and horrible though. No one cares about your baby like you do. It isn't normal to pay people to watch your baby. How did humanity survive without RUclips people telling you how to raise your kid.
My baby have cone shaped head and how to correct...pls help me
Shan Muga Priya rub it everyday with olive oil to mold it do it now while the bone is soft!
It looks like it would be too hard for the baby to breath on the tummy.
When should I start tummy time with my baby he’s currently 5weeks old now
Hello and congratulations on your baby! Unless you pediatrician has recommended otherwise, please start tummy time as soon as possible. Just gently and slowly roll him over from his back to his tummy for a few minutes while you are with him and he is awake. Enjoy these special moments with him!
These kids are still at the block of wood phase ie. really little ones - do books actually have any impact??? dubious
Hi..where did you purchase the little elephant toy?
I want one where did you get the blue elephant toy?
My baby 6 week can I do tummy time
Awesome as its not just the one way my boy hates being put on the ground on tummy
Is it fine having tummy time for 5 weeks old baby?
Hello Qinory. Yes, it is fine to begin tummy time for a 5 week old. Even a newborn baby can do tummy time. The exception would be if your doctor does not think it would be good, but that is rare. I hope you and your baby enjoy it. Congratulations!
How strong 💪🏿 is she
Who gave their baby for this experiment? Wouldnt be me for sure
Hello it is ok if i use fillow for my 2mons old baby
Hello Levz, Congratulations on your baby. The SIDs guidelines recommend not using a pillow for sleep. However, if you mean something like a boppy pillow that you place under your baby's chest while she or he is doing tummy time and you are right there watching your baby, that is fine. Try tummy time in various positions - on a boppy pillow; in your arms; flat on the floor; in your lap; etc. Again, congratulations!
@@susanklemm5505 😘thank you so much miss Susan for your reply and also thank you for this video I learn so much
thank you so much..

so don't start til 8 weeks?
Hello Meeper. Start much sooner than 8 weeks. Ask your doctor, usually right after birth is a good time! The baby is born and is placed on you . . . and will be on her or his tummy. Just be sure she or he is awake and you are right there with her or him. Many wishes for joy!
Oh ok :)
