- Live from the red carpet at the TV Academy's 'Switched at Birth' screening and panel event, I chat with Sean Berdy about what's coming up in the second half of the first season, including the wedge that comes between Bay and Emmett and what the crazy outpouring of support for Emmett means to him. Also, will Emmett rock the drums again soon?

I love that he talked about the beauty of ASL. It is truly a beautiful language. I fell in love with it years ago when I first saw it. I love everything about the shell and how they really spotlight the deaf culture.

i love this show...i have a deaf daughter that was born deaf and it has been a struggle to learn what i do know but it has been rewarding as well. she has a cochlear implant which she hates... she loves signing and she loves this show, never misses a episode

Aww! Wow he really is deaf. I love the show and his character. I was blown when I saw on that one episode where it was quiet the whole time that Daphne is not really deaf. I think sign language is so beautiful and I'm trying to learn more words. So awesome :)))
What I think is great about this show (and thank you Marlee Matlin for producing it!) is that Emmet shows a young face of Deafness. He pursues his life, dreams and happiness with an amazing confidence. He is strong, independent and knows that Deaf people CAN. They CAN do anything except for hear. Yet, he is vulnerable and confronts his stereotyping of all hearing people to find love. The same for Daphne. They are melding with hearing society and teaching people about Deafness.
I'm not deaf but I would learn sign language to be with him! He's adorable and has a great heart ;)
I love how ASL is incorporated on tv. I am learning ASL more and more I know how hard it is to communicate with some one when you do not seek the same language. I am continuously teaching my parents what I learn and we are doing different musical events for our church in ASL. We do have some people in the deaf community that show up at church every once and a while and I know that they appreciate the extra help.

Do not give up. I've had Deaf teachers tell I'll never be an interpreter. I've had Gallaudet graduates threaten to boycott me. I've had to bear a lot but it made me stronger. Some people take longer to learn the language. Some people are naturals at it. It's like those people in school you hate because they get A's on everything without studying. Meanwhile, you're sweating bullets on every test! Sweat more bullets. You'll win AND you'll respect it more because you had to earn it!!

I've heard that. My ASL teacher wants me to interpret in the ASL 1 class. I'll be going into year 3, and while everyone else seems to see improvement, I don't yet. It can be so frustrating, but it's rewarding too. The more I learn about the culture and language, the more I want to be able to understand it.

Thank you! I've already seen some respect just at my attempt. I visited PSD and was in a classroom, but instead of using the interpreter to explain why I wanted to learn it, I signed it myself, and even though I messed up, they stuck with me and told me not to worry about the fact that I messed up, because I was trying. They said I'm doing better than they had expected, which gives me hope. I thought I might like to be an interpreter, but I'm just not sure yet. :)

@MusicSavesPeople As an interpreter, I remember I had that AHA! moment when I realized it wasn't put in English order and then when I learned the grammar and linguistics...WOW! Sounds like when you learned your own NATIVE langauge. Plus, it is statistically proven that in order to be good in your 2nd or 3rd language you must be EXCELLENT in your first language!!

@MusicSavesPeople - learning ASL is difficult unless you have an interest in it. when i learned ASL ... i picked it up SUPER fast only cuz I would sign ENDLESSLY, I interacted with the deaf community, skyped with deaf friends etc. But Sean was BORN deaf ... ASL is his language and what he knows ... of course his signing is going to be more authentic and faster paced.

i`m learning sign language because i have people in my family who are deaf and i really like sign.
Actually, she has Meniere's Disease. She has some hearing issues but she fakes the deaf accent in Switched at Birth. She became fluent in ASL before the fact, which is pretty awesome. She didn't even know she had Meniere's until 5/6 years ago. :)

That is true no matter what language you are learning. Typically, Deaf people reward you but they will also correct you. Because the language is very direct it may seem like they're being harsh. They're not. They just don't want you to make the same mistake should you be around other Deaf people. They correct you because they are supporting you. Sometimes hearing people do not understand that.

I have noticed that people who aren't actually deaf tend to be completely silent when singing or you'll hear them speak very quietly or something.... people who are deaf often have a very specific way of making sounds when they're singing, except for the ones who don't make sounds at all.
@ Phoenix: Deaf people are often dragged to a speech therapist.... They try to make them more aware of how to form the sounds they could use for speaking or even with the use of sign language (lip movements)
