I have been accompanying ballet classes for over 35 years, and often get asked about how it is done. I have found it very difficult to teach others how to do it. I hope any accompanist who wants to learn to play ballet class will watch this video. You have explained everything here so beautifully! I hope we will have a opportunity to communicate with each other sometime. This is fantastic!
I might get a job as a ballet accompanist for the first time this coming school year. My goal is to watch all your videos this summer. Thank you for doing this!
Hi Ellie! Nice to see you here and happy to see that these videos will help you 😉 Do you know that I have an online course? I send you the link and take a look. It might be something very helpful for you and get a clear structure of the ballet classes and what means the role of the pianist in the class 😉 mariana-palacios-s-piano-course.teachable.com/p/course-for-ballet-pianists
Great first video Mariana!!! I know it was a Russian ballet teacher that taught me how to match the quality of the movements .Frappes, light and quick, grand battements heavier march etc. The good thing is every class has the same set of steps for the barre and usually the same meters. If a person can master playing for class it will make them a much better musician. You have to think and adjust constantly.... It carries over to many things! Thanks you for your passion in helping people learn about this wonderful skill that can lead to a rewarding profession!
3:41. This is such a good tip!! I play at a large studio with several dance rooms, often with multiple classes going on at once. Whenever I have a break from one of my classes (or sometimes before my class starts) I like to go stand outside the door of one of the rooms (which are usually open) and listen/watch the other pianists play. Like you said, I've learned so much from just watching and observing. Also, I would add, if you have the opportunity to sit in at a class, do it!!! (Or ask if it can be arranged.) When I was first starting out, I got the opportunity to watch one of the more experienced pianists at our studio play for various classes, which made me a little more confident about playing for my classes as I wasn't going in completely blind! AND it also paid off because I later got asked to substitute for her so I already had an idea of what to expect and the types of things I could play for her classes. Another tip that was especially helpful for me: if it's your first time playing for ballet, LET THE TEACHER KNOW!!! That way it'll put a lot less pressure on you and the teacher will know to give you more time, guidance, etc. Also, be patient with yourself! It took me about three months before I started to feel like I was starting to get the hang of it, and it wasn't until about a year when I REALLY started to feel like I knew what I was doing. And I'm still learning new things every day! Like any new skill, it takes time and practice to learn, so just be patient with yourself and try to enjoy the process. The payoff is very rewarding 😊
Thanks Roxana for your detailed comment! 🙏🏼👏🏼 So happy to see other motivated pianists that love and respect this job! Yes, observing other musicians is so helpful and, I’d say, healthy. We are sometimes too lonely with our ideas, frustrations, successes… it’s good to share! Sharing is caring 😇 And also so good what you say about the teachers 🙏🏼👏🏼🙏🏼
Hej Mariana! This is a great video for beginner ballet teachers as well, so they know how to communicate to their pianists. Good job! Keep going! Everyone else, Mariana is a wonderful pianist for ballet classes!
Hola!
Really good tips and concepts! I'm sure you're going to specify that a polonaise intro is 6 cts, and every now and then a really fast piece intro is 8 cts.
Hi! Thanks for your comments 😊 Yes, nice that you mentioned that, so other pianists can read it: intro for polonese in 6 counts and in faster pieces is possible to play a 8 counts intro 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 But 99% of the times intro in 5-6-7-8 dancers’ counts 😉
These delightful videos are a great service to the profession. In addition to pieces in different tempos the pianist needs to find pieces in different meters. Which you’ll undoubtedly cover in a future video.

Hi! I'm so thankfull for your videos. It helps me a lot. Are you accompaning contemporary dance classes? If yes, can you do some teaching about accompaning these types of classes? Once again, thank you
Hi Leonard! Thanks for your words 🌟👍🏼 Yes, I play sometimes for contemporary dance classes. I’ve thought about it but it’s another large subject! 😅 Tere are so many ways to play for contemporary (styles, schools, instruments, music sets…). Maybe in the future I’ll try to summarize in a video my experience about it 😉 But I prefer to focus only on playing for ballet at the moment. Have you seen my videos playing for contemporary in my Instagram highlights? They have this emojis 🎹🥁 I use to mix wavedrum, loop station, iPad (with the apps Garage Band and Oval Iphad) and piano ☺️

07.00" I would suggest to find square pieces of Music. Try to count what u hear(find the acoustic beat) in 8. 8.13" i have an easier tip for 5,6,7,8. Make a cadenza! Example in C Majore piece: 5(=Dminor7), 6(=Gmajor), 7+8 (=Cmajor) Or you play the last 4beats of the music you choosen.
Hi Didi! Thanks for your comment. Yes, exactly, the best it’s to find pieces that are already squared, and yes, feeling the eights from what you hear. Even though I’ve been playing for many years, I always check that all the phrases are squared and are organized in 8+8+8+8 or plus 8+8. I have on mind to make a video about how to make clear intros 😉 Definitely II-V-I works very well 👏🏼
