First class review. Very informative without all the meaningless graphs and technical jargon . Pictures speak a thousand words as they say. Well done Sir and thank you.
This lens is actually a remake of one of the greatest film lenses made by Zeiss for the Leica mount, the 35mm F2 Biogon ZM. Zeiss had to sacrifice a tad of distortiion correction to increase the focal length so it would work correctly on the A7 sensor. But the lens still has the lowest distortion of almost any lens made and still had that amazing 3D effect and Zeiss color pop. Oh, by the way it is pronounced: "Bee-Oh-Gone."
Hello Jay, I recently switched from Nikon to Sony, and was looking for a 35mm lens for my A7r. Your review of the Loxia 35mm was very helpful, and was the main reason I selected it over other 35mm candidates. I am extremely pleased with the purchase. The results have been terrific. As noted in your review, the Loxia is tack sharp, and Zeiss pop really comes through. It is now competing with the Otus 55mm (Novoflex adapter) for favorite lens in my kit. At 1/3rd the cost, the Loxia is a steal. Thank you again for your review. I really enjoy following you on RUclips.
Steve Thank you very much Steve for the comments and information. The Otus is really a monster in size compared to the Loxia, but they do share a lot as far as image quality goes. I had a chance to shoot with the Otus for a second or two at the Photo Expo and from what I recall the Bokeh was a bit creamier than the Loxia lens and sharpness was jut a touch better I thought. Very hard to tell though for sure unless A and B testing was done, which I did not. I still need to get the 50mm f/2 Loxia lens, but now the Batis has come out. Oh man, they look awesome! Thanks again, Jay
I got myself the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 for my Sony A7. It cost less than 500,- USD and I am very satisfied with it. It's fully manual, too, extremely sharp, even wide open. Great build quality! Even though it's a bit heavy and bulky, I can't recommend it enough,
Andreas W. Hold Thanks for the comments and the Samyang/ Rokinons are the best bang for the buck lenses on the market if you ask me. I have reviewed several over the years: sonyalphalab.com/category/reviews/lens-reviews/prime-lens-reviews/ Just scroll down a bit for the Rokinon lens reviews. The optics on the Samyang/ Rokinon lenses are very good, but are not on the same level as the Zeiss Loxia. The distortion in particular I noticed on the 35mm f/1.4 Rokinon. Corner sharpness and color fringing is also much more noticable. Otherwise a fantastic lens for the money though as you said....
Great review mate, way better then digital Revs, Love your test lab. Im getting this lens, Im selling my x pro 1 gear for sony A7s. Im so impressed by sony and there partnership with Zeiss. Don't know why I haven't moved to Sony before :(
Artur Conka Thank you very much and I appreciate the feedback about the lab testing! I plan on evolving that a bit very soon with some electric trains and what not... This lens is really awesome output wise and I got a few keeps of the dog that I will be printing for sure at some point. It's never to late to try different gear and welcome to the Sony world! Jay
I'd really like to see a test between this and the 35mm f2 Zeiss on the RX1R. I've got a feeling people might be VERY surprised to see how good that lens is..
I'm agree, I had both of th RX1R models and I do believe that this lens is maybe very similar construction. Can someone please comment who knows this? Cheers
I wouldn't call the bokeh amazing. It looks a bit nervous to me at medium apertures. I suppose for a wide lens it might be ok, but it has personality and that's worth something. But otherwise the IQ of this lens is incredible. No CA, sharp as a tack etc. I want one.
I have a similar Minolta, the MD f/1.7. If the f/1.4 is anything like the f/1.7 it must be superb! The 50 1.7 is incredibly sharp across the frame when stopped down a bit, those lenses are amazing value for money at $20-40. There's something really nice about using a vintage fully manual lens sometimes and it's impressive how old glass can still kick ass today. Anyone looking for a cheap manual focus lens should run to eBay. Now!
Drive Cancel Thanks for the comments and I couldn't agree more about the old school manual lenses. Best IQ for the money by far!!!! And a lot of fun to use the mechanical lenses if time permits of course ;) Sucks for the kids most times...
Nice! This lens is amazing, I"ll probably pick one up down the road. I've been thinking of getting the Loxia 50 f2 first for a6000 giving me an effective FL of 75. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the review, thinking about getting some of these for video, is the throw pretty long? With focus peaking i might even just shoot manual focus now, it is incredible!!
Muhammad Zahid Thanks and not really as far as the output goes in my opinion. The Sony FE 35mm f/2.8 lens is very sharp, but does not offer the "look" that the Loxia lens has. The real world sample photos show this off best in my opinion....
Nice review. Just got mine and enjoying it. But surprisingly I compared to my Carl Zeiss Flektogon DDR 35mm 2.4 (vintage lens) and they are not too far on how they render.
+Rodolfo Callejo Thanks for the comments! I'm not surprised, because even my really old Minolta 50mm f/1.4 Rokkor-X lens renders like a killer Zeiss in a lot of ways also. Not in the distortion department though...
Hello Jay, thank you very much for this nice review. Did you got the chance to compare the loxia to the 55f18z and if so, which lens offers the better image quality? And more 3D Zeiss PoP? Thank you very much in advance, cheers Mark
Marks check I have not reviewed the 50mm f/2 Loxia lens yet. I did use the 55 f/1.8 lens and It's going to be really hard to beat I must tell you. Perhaps in bokeh, distortion, and some contrast. Other than that it's going to be super close I'm thinking...
I would go with the Touit 32mm f/1.8 for the crop factor camera over this lens, because it's physically smaller, lighter, and has Auto focus built in! The 35mm (sel35f18) is also nice because it has Optical SteadyShot built in if you want to hand-hold in super low light situations. It does not perform on the same level as the Touit lenses though. See my 32mm Touit lens review here: sonyalphalab.com/product-review/zeiss-touit-32mm-f1-8-lens-review-sony-e-mount/ I hope that helps, Jay
Hey Jay, love your videos!! Especially Bones =). I've seen your Flickr and you've used both the 35 Loxia and 35 f1.4 FE (trying to decide between the two.. the only thing really stopping me from getting the f1.4 is the size, one of the reasons I switched to Sony was for a more compact system). I was just wondering your subjective opinion on these lenses. I already know the differences on paper, but how do they feel to you in comparison, what do you like/dislike and which one would you choose and why? I know its a lot of questions but I'd really appreciate your opinion. Thanks in advance!
Nicholas Hylton Hello and great question. I would go with the 35mm f/1.4 lens, because I prefer the AF and faster speed. The size is the huge negative though as you clearly stated. The size is not that big of a deal to me, but I can understand why the F/2 Loxia is very tempting as well. The Loxia in my opinion has a bit more color, contrast, and that 3d pop look that Zeiss is known for. That being said, the other 35mm f/1.4 is extremely high quality in all regards. Again, size and cost being the biggest negative by far in my opinion.. I hope that helps, Jay
Thanks for sharing Jay! Great review & photos. I’m thinking of getting both the Loxia 35mm & 50mm. By the way, check out the brand new Voigtländer 50mm f2 APO-LANTHAR. This is another amazing manual focus lens. Cheers!
Would you make a video on how to use this lens on your Sony with regard to focus peaking? I am not clear on how that aids focusing a manual lens. Also, can you move focus points on this lens?
KingdomArmor I don't have the time to do a video with this lens, but you can see how it works clearly in this video I made starting at ~6:00 ruclips.net/video/-OPFwzyXC18/видео.htmlm10s

My 35mm Loxia aperture blades protrude a tiny bit at wide open f2. Anyone else have this issue? You can see it from the front as well as in the bokeh light balls.
The Sony Zeiss 35MM FE is getting very mixed reviews initially. How do you think it would compare to this lens? How do you think this lens would compare to a used Summicron 35? I want (I am a hobbiest, and dont need) a speed lens at 35MM, which would you pick. I currently have a voightlander 35 Leica mount that is just too soft for my tastes.

raredreamfootage Set the lens focus to the minimum and then put the lens in front of something close until you find the sharpness. That is how I did it in the Lab for example... You could use a ruler also ;)
Sorry I think I mistated my question. I would like your opinion on the close focusing distance. It is listed as 30cm on the spec sheet. I am wondering if it can get close enough to objects for an elite prime. Most great primes can have the subject an inch from the front element and have them in focus.
Only Macro lenses allow you to focus at close distances such as one inch. It does not mean the lens is good or bad based of minimum focus distance, that is just a characteristic of the lens. This lens requires you to be at the distance of 30cm in order to get sharp focus. That does not mean the lens can't be physically closer to something though. It just means it won't be sharp due to the minimum focus distance of X. raredreamfootage
I mean... Almost for the zoom lens, if you stop down to F8 you will reach excellent sharpness. For me, if I have to stop down to at lease F4/F5.6 to get nice sharp photos, it may mean that the lens is not good. I don't know... I think that for a $1000+ lens it should perform much better than this. Do you have any comments for this? Thanks.
