- 5 tricks to remove a stuck oil filter
Oil filter won't come off? I'll show you 5 tricks to remove a stuck oil filter that won't screw off. First begin by using the proper tool which is an oil filter wrench. If that doesn't work, use a chain vise grip or straps. Next use a screwdriver and hammer. Next use a vise grip and lastly chisel and hammer.

Well, when the engineers put a bunch of plastic around it and you literally have maybe an inch of reach it’s impossible.
Luckily VW diesel engins use the common 32mm socket to remove oil filter housing.... They made it easier for the DIY guy..... For the old school i just punch 2 holes with screwdriver then twist it loose with needle nose pliers..... Its bit messy lol.... But it gets the job done quicker than looking around for fancy tools 😊
The screw driver hack helped me, 1.2 Renault Clio 2007 with about 5-10mm room to lever. Easy job, zero access #mechanics
These work great when you’re holding it in your hand. Completely different story when you don’t have any room to put any tools because of the ass hats that don’t know to design an engine around having to maintain it; leaving you no room to access it in the first place!
The oil filter pissed me off so much I skipped every other option and when straight to stabbing it. But guess who’s covered In oil and removed the oil filter! ✊🏽
😂😂😂
Dealing with this now lmao wish me luck. I would go buy a tool but there's no damn oil in my car to drive 😂😂
IT WORKS the last method., Guys if you end up destroying your oil filter get a chisel or hammer and just get it break. Legend
I was skeptical first, but Sir you did right by us!! Thank you screw driver method worked for me!
And to eliminate that problem just put the filter on hand tight. thanks great training video for beginner.
Lube places put it on extra tight, so we'll be too frustrated to do it ourselves.
The bicycle chain and vice grips did the job. Really had to put my all.i to it since the oil filter housing is up there with very little room. Thank you.
Thanks for this! Just had to use the screwdriver method after the dealership cranked it on. Keep up the great work!
Trick #6 Use one of em "socket" like tools that fit on the end of the oil filter. The type you use a ratchet to spin. Of course, the cheap tool strips around the oil filter. However, if you put 2-3 screws through the "socket" tool and into the filter, it'll hold and spin right off.
Works great for a vehicle like mine where a standard oil filter removal tool won't fit.
I was all ready to buy a drill to fix my stuck oil filter. But the shop assistant suggested I simply try sliding a pipe over my wrench to provide some more leverage. I tried it, and it made an impossible task easy. It only set me back $5 for the bit of pipe. I hope this helps someone else. God bless! And thanks for the video.
I’ve seen a few videos of the screwdriver method but they never go into more detail about what to do if THAT fails as well. Thank you.
About to head out again and try to convince the oil filter to come off…wish me luck. 😅
Maybe take it around the block a few more times, it has separation anxiety. 😆
If the screwdriver trick fails then you need to take it off the block and put it in a vice before you tear it down to nothing like I just did. Lol The chain with the vice grip method is obviously the best method to do. One method he didn't show is they make an attachment that goes right over the top of the oil filter. You buy at most auto stores. It has a spot where you can attach a breaker bar, to it. If you get one that is a little too big. You can just shove pieces of rubber in there or something to fill the Gap and it also adds grip to it since the oil makes it difficult for them to grab sometimes. Just lightly tap them on with a hammer. Not too far though or you will not be able to insert your rachet or breaker bar into the end.
Thanks, bro! The chain vise grips worked for me after everything else failed.
You had me dying at the screw driver method. 🤣
I can see this video going on and on and on, getting funnier and funnier.
Great job, sir!
You can laugh all you want, but it fucking works. Don’t ask me how I know😅
very tight area, used a long thin pipe to hammer the screwdriver thru from above, knew it only needed a 1 inch turn to loosen and screw driver came out easily, not too much oil to clean up, most stays in the filter, thank you so much
This is useful information because most times when I take my car in to get the oil changed they don't preoil the gasket and wrench it on so tight I have to take it back in to get it off. The screwdriver method work for me
Thanks for the tips!
Another way if you don't have an oil filter wrench, take an old belt (serpentine or other) and put one end of the belt through the open end of a wrench where you have a loop that you can slip onto the filter. use it like an oil filter wrench
I was going to use the screwdriver method but thought of using a pipe wrench and thank god it worked! 😅
Minute 1:29 ; his smile is priceless. Hahaha Nice video, thanks! 4th method worked just fine for my vehicle. What pain in the... 2 hrs under my car trying to take it out.
This video sure helped me. Thank you! I had to do the chisel.
the screw driver trick worked for me. Thanks a bunch. and with no lift on a CRV..was a pain in the ass, but worth it in the end.
Great tips! I've had to use the screw driver method.
Thanks worked fine now I was able to change my oil 😊👍😎
Had the idea to screwdriver method came here to confirm it wasn't the best but still possible when gorilla Mike wrenches your stuff down tighter than necessary
Thank you this video Really Helped 👍🏾
What about filters in very cramped quarters?
This is every solution ! 😂😮
If this doesn’t help you just throw the whole tool box away it’s not for you my friend
The screw drivers method works the others you need to have room to turn those wrench
before reachimg for a tool which can destroy the filter, double check your rotation.
When you have to reach around in a darkened awkard position it is easy to tighten instead of loosen the filter.
All of those tricks are for filters where you have so much space to work with and also horizontal filters.
Today I had to use the chisel at the front of the filter method on a harley davidson. .
Great video man! Unfortunately I Tried all of those methods before watching this. First time in 25 years working on vehicles that I have seen an oil filter.Stripped all the way down to the very top layer and still unable to get it out even with a hammer and punch!! I removed the entire housing assembly and its in my shop vice at the moment... just cant belive it though! The oil filter was one of the more expensive brands too... all i can think is some how it got cross threaded when changed and installed with an oil filter wrench with an extension to have torqued the piss out of it that much to where it is now married to the aluminum part of the block. Lol this should be fun though. Im thinking im going to just pull out the stick welder and tack a little handle on it and then bear the piss out of it. Worse case scenario.. I'll have to replace the housing. Has anyone else ever had this problem? I still cant believe it though.. fun times
Great video 😊
Thanks!
I was changing my oil and drained out the oil into my oil catch pan and thought I had a new oil filter, but I don't so I have to wait for an oil filter to come in about 3 days.
So is it okay to let my vehicle sit up without putting oil in while I wait for the new filter? Or should I put the fresh oil in and then drain it back out when the new filter comes?
By the way, I haven't taken the old oil filter off yet since I didn't want to have that area with nothing on it.
Tried all , non of it worked and usually is pretty tide around the filter. But good video. Fortunately the Flat rope( braid) and two wrenches worked like a charm
I don't care what anyone says, like, "Oh, well, they put it on tight like that out of incompetence."
No! I disagree! No, the reason they do it is to make sure YOU can't do your own oil change. It's intentional SABOTAGE.
They gotta' be putting these things on with air wrenches, along with making sure the gasket is dry. I couldn't change my sister's oil because of this. I barely got the one for mine off of there. This crap is INTENTIONAL. So you’ll rely on THEM to do the change.
Try drilling a couple holes in your strap wrench then place it around your filter then screw a couple decent size screws in the holes and turn, or just take it to the Harley dealer and they will change it for 750,000 dolars.
I do oil changes for my friends and almost all have gone to mechanics. Everytime everything is overtightened and the gaskets are destroyed. Working after myself, the filter comes off with a filter cup and there's never a struggle.
I love my wife's 2006 Lexus gx470, but got dam they put the oil filter in a terrible spot!!
I may hv overtightened it last time;)
Which filter puller is better 1 or 2
and when these don’t work, we move onto the chainsaw
Where were you last Saturday?
I’m on the side highway and I have tried everything you said and it has not worked I have done 1 million oil changes I’ve never seen a oil filter like this I cannot get it off not even with the chisel deal deal
Yo have you figured it out if let me know how
Will you help me get the oil filter off a 2004 toyota sequoia from the hood
I love u❤ u safe my car and my life
What brand are those vise grip pliers?
Irwin
@@Top5AutoRepairs Thanks! Much appreciated!
looks like l have torch it hot hot ..then twist it off, the screw driver slide the tin.
Happen to me nowadays..😢 and i have to use the last method.
How do you get it off if the filter spins but won't come off or loosen. Like the inside is still stuck on.
Break apart the outside case and use a channel lock to remove the inside.
Hats off to the idiots at the oil change place that did me dirty.
This just happened to me. Oil filter is so stubborn.
And what if that still doesn't work?
Reasons I'm watching this video. Dumb old honda crv! Oh well screw driver method it is 😂😂😂
Where can I get the tool ?
Most auto part stores should carry it or Amazon
What if an oil filter is in a hole ?
Don't over tighten the oil filter in the first place.
not even the screwdriver worked for me honda transalp
Screwdriver isn't doing anything ! IDK what to do !
I can’t damage mine is canister type
Sucks i done have room for such
Yeah well when you’re oil filter is nested in between the oil pan and exhaust pipe you can’t do any of that 💩
If the screwdriver trick fails then you need to take it off the block and put it in a vice before you tear it down to nothing like I just did.
