I finally got around to watching this! Great video Patrick and I want to say thank you so much for letting me be Mugi! Doing this part was a bit different for me with the yelling scene as I've never done before. I'm so happy of the way it turned out 😄
I definitely feel a certain relation to mugi as an Asian American. Asians are always fetishized and called cute, adorable, and innocent, and society wants you to act that way. This can make men feel emasculated, and also creates deadly sexual assault rates for Asian women. Breaking free from that is super looked down upon by society, especially in America. Also, being mixed, I totally understand Leano trying to hide half of herself.
That why as a photographer I hear people saying that the girl is cute whenever she is an Asian….like yeah but she’s also beautiful why can’t we just call her pretty.
Legit. As someone who's Asian, I hate that others usually either treat us like we're trash or that we're cute, weak and submissive. Like can't it be either and we all just be seen as human beings??
Paru's best writing seemingly keeps being short stories rather then longer ones. Beast Complex is always enjoyable for this, and while Beastars as a whole had a shaky ending, we still see this in the short stories spread through out it being some of the best content in that story. Really excited for when I can read some of the newer Beast Complex stories
I really think Beast complex has the possibility of becoming a fantastic series if only she decides to focus a lil bit less on meat consumption and a bit more on the struggles of different species coexisting with each other. Not saying theres anything wrong with the first, just that short stories with different focuses make for more possibilities than the same focus on all of them. Seriously, Beast Complex is great and has a lot of potential, is such a shame that shes p much done with it
I didn’t realize until just now that so many of the recent chapters of beast complex are about Legoshi’s building-mates from that hangout scene! The writer bear, the “ugly” pig, the sea eagle and the girl he carries around, Mugi, and the albino crow.
And pretty much every chapter of Legoshi's roommates was great and very well written. My favorite among them is chapter 8 the relationship of Pig and Peacock Gerbera is great and the ending is beautiful. 🥺 I highly reccomend!
Man, people who push off Beaststars as “Weird furry shit” are missing out. The writing is amazing, I love how it conveys the themes of real life societal issues, and the art is great. Those people who judge it based off the immediate look are just wrong great vid as always 💞

I feel this. I have ADHD and being neodivergent in this society is hard when everyone doesn't understand you or thinks they already have you figured out just from your disorder. I hate having to wear a mask like him.
I feel your pain dude. I have Autism and related ADD. Fitting in is difficult and so is understanding what is expected. But If I do make a mistake, then it’s used as ammunition to bar me from jobs, TAships, phD. Programs, etc. by a certain lab coordinator or from my supervisor who expected absolute perfection out of me, and threatened to black mail me through my autism and mistakes through her reference letters. Nothing I did to make up for or learn from those mistakes mattered to them at all.
I have multiple complexes, illnesses and traumas. Idek if my mom molested me or not. In school i was gullible. And asocial, and creepy n awkward. I would have nervous laughter giving presentations that were dark, including one where all students had to cover a disaster. Mine was on the unabomber. I could only pay attention to the negative because of my moms depression and trauma. Never was taught to drive. Cars are too expensive anyway. But ive done no dating, no work. Its hard for me to find joy in my hobbies because im compensating. And i dont want to work because i may get worse from not managing time well would give insomnia induced psychosis.
I know beastars in general is a very relatable comic with amazing comparisons to everyday real life but something about this one specifically hits home for me in an extra way. In person I'll admit people tend to see me as small and cutesy and when I struggle to do something everyone is always rushing to help me or brushing me off when I try to assert myself. I related to Haru going through similar struggles but the way she presents and how she handles them is where my connection fizzles out. I still love her of course but Mugi just hit different. He's veiwed as polite and cute and even feminine when in reality he's a bit stand offish and lazy and couldn't care less about people fawning over him. Even if being treated like some adorable little guy was helpful he hated it and ended up wearing that as a mask because its what was expected of him. I just... It's such a mood. I'm sure it wasn't intentional but this seems like the kind of story a lot of afab trans people could identify with heavily and it brings me much joy! Thank you for making this video so I could get a chance to see it!!

as a trans man, i really really relate to mugi! i think the trans narrative is quite obvious, he is placed into the role of a girl without his consent and he has to hide the fact that he is not one at all! trans men are very commonly infantilized by people who do not truly preserve them men no matter how they present. him breaking free of that and living as who he truly is is very inspiring for me and gives me lots of hope for myself! overall, i think this story is a great read for any marginalized person needing some hope!!!

Shiba expected to be cute is def a stereotype in the current world too, my grandparents had a shibe who absolutely HATED children + she was a grumpy old lady. However, we also had 2 Great Danes, and when my grandparents were helping babysit our pups when we needed to leave to go somewhere for a day or so, they would bring Max, their Golden Retriever, and Miko, their Shiba Inu. They would come back and sometimes we will switch roles of taking care of our grandparents dogs. Anyways, while we took care of this it was kinda a rule to not touch Miko, because even petting her would get her to growl and bark at you, like, it didn't matter if you were gentle or not, she *hated* you if you were under the age of 12. Suffice to say, it wasn't until near the end of Mikos life did she open up to me. She was such a grump, but a good grump either way.
There's one reason i like Mugi, R/Louis and Legoshi (so basically Beastars itself). I'm a french autistic person (asperger type or the worst type of autism), but before getting to the real point i think it's better to tell it from the beginning. Before knowing i was autistic i felt like i was so much different but i didn't know why, one day i recognize myself in a book written by an other asperger autistic person, then 2 or 3 years later me and my parents went to a group of person in charge of doing diagnostic for possible autistis person. And i got the bad luck to believe that after knowing that i'm an autist my life would get better, but NO 'cause infortunatly the austism is not very well know in France and the only images that people have is an idiot or a super intelligent person. And time passes by, but there are things that made me force to show a "perfect" normal person : 1 the fact that i'm hiding my suffering 2 i'm diong fakes smiles that made me feel hypocritycal 3 there are people that will never accept me for what i am like MY own big brother who is not an autist and that can't understand what it's like to know that you're in a society/world wich is not made for you. So yeah my life is a real hell, and before realising all those thing i was stupid enough to think that everyone will believe or not compare me to the idea they all have of autistic people, who can't understand what it's like. (Sorry if my english is bad, and what you're reading is the cold and dark truth i have to endure until i sleep.) And seeing characters knowing that made me feel comforted. Also i don't stop doing efforts to feeling accepted in society or with my family members.

In all seriousness, I believe it was about letting go of your species pride/imagine and doing what's best for you, regardless of what society expects your to. She always bowed and hid herself, thinking she had to be less tiger to be accepted, but at the same time, she was still doing so in a tiger way somewhat consciously. She was hurting her back, always tense, and her going to the masseuse was only exasperating it because, even then, she could not show her belly and get the adjustment she needed, therefore still perpetuating the problem. When she finally gave in she felt better physically and mentally because she didn't have to be so stressed, be it normally or on her body. But it also screamed gay, which is great.

As someone who was in a similar situation to Mugi (Having to be constantly *PERFECT* and *OBIDENT* 24/7 for my extremely controlling and abusive special needs assistants, for almost all my years in Secondary School), I can totally relate to the deep existential emptiness and suffering that comes from having to constantly lie and play a fake role you were forced into, every single school day of the year. When it started happening again in college, dealing with a particular asshole who got so UPSET that I HESISTATED visibly to sign his "Special assistant performance form", that leads him get paid, and even MORE UPSET that I said I would do if after he got offended, I was at my *BREAKING POINT*. I was JUST STARTING to finally recover from serious OCD and psychological trauma that these kinds of people gave me as a child, and now they were going to treat me like *PROPERTY AGAIN!?* Getting dragged into a priavte office and given out to by the "special needs support leader", for not signing something OPTIONAL for a lazy and cynical asshole, *PUSHED ME OVER THE FUCKING EDGE MENTALLY!* Behind my usual fake smiles and acceptance, I started messing outside support services for help against these kinds of abuses, explained everything, wrote down every new abuse that had happened AS it happened, and after a month or so, a regular helper of the outside autism support group that I met during break, helped me put my plan into action that gave the jerk a taste of her own medience: PRESSURE and EVIDENCE making her and the male assistant look really bad. I insisted on having no assistant from now on, but ultimately settled for one that wouldn't hinder or harm me at all. If anything ever happened to me again, I could do the same process all over again, and assert my *HUMAN RIGHTS!* That is one of the Proudest, Most Independent, and most Badass moments in my life so far. After a life of torment, abuse, and being treated like a puppet, I cut my own strings and forced change to happen for the better, without any help or advice from my family. You only got one Life, so *PLEASE* live it to the fullest! Don't waste it in constant fear and torment like I did for my entire adolescence. STAND UP FOR YOURSELF, SO OTHERS CAN HELP YOU DEFY SOCIETY AS WELL!!

from Beast Complex I love the story about Murou and Kameji, it left me crying because the ending was just ahhhhh. Even though Murou bullied Kameji, after Kamji learned what was really going on he offered Murou a way out and friendship.

God, I relate to Mugi on a spiritual level. I DESPISED my first job. I didn't wanna do it at all, but had to because I needed the money. I'm just glad I broke out of that cycle.
I’m super interested to hear your opinion on the S2 dub voice actors and their performance, *SPOILERS FOR DUB VOICES* I watch dub mainly, but I’ve watched a lot of sub scenes on RUclips before season 2 finally aired on Netflix a few days ago! As soon as it came out I watched the entire season in one go! Jonah Scott did a really phenomenal job in my opinion this season as Legoshi- as expected to be honest. Juno was Juno, it was good, although I wish There was a bit more of a vocal range- I think she sounds the same whenever she’s on screen- but it’s not a bad voice and she’s a side character so I’m not too pressed about it. Louis’s VA did amazing too, though it was a teeenssssyyyy bit awkward to hear him in his more emotional moments- but it still hit close to home that way. It was handled well all-around in my opinion. I think Haru’s VA did amazing this season in her little moments. It was nice to hear Haru more lively and having more of a vocal range compared to her depressed S1 self in my opinion- she felt really distinct. I feel like people are hit or miss with haru’s dub voice actor, but in my opinion I actually prefer it alot over the sub VA. She feels depressed and unique compared to her small-animal peers, compared to sub- who’s voice for Haru sounds more like a generic Anime girl LOL (but not bad in quality or anything) Riz and Ibuki was who I was reallyyy anticipating the most in English, and honestly I am EXTREMELY happy with Riz, Patrick did a great job making you feel sorry for him and making Riz sound innocent as well as terrifying when he gets aggressive. His voice sounds well in contrast to Legoshi’s! Ibuki’s voice- I’m iffy about. I don’t think it’s a absolutely terrible, but I still don’t know how I feel about it. I like how gravely his voice sounded as a depressed Lion who lived his life a beast of the Black Market, but I think his voice and a few of his lines in the car with Louis didn’t hit so close to home like it did in the Japanese version (which is still not as good as the manga tbh)

As someone who was in a similar situation to Mugi (Having to be constantly *PERFECT* and *OBIDENT* 24/7 for my extremely controlling and abusive special needs assistants, for almost all my years in Secondary School), I can totally relate to the deep existential emptiness and suffering that comes from having to constantly lie and play a fake role you were forced into, every single school day of the year.
When it started happening again in college, dealing with a particular asshole who got so UPSET that I HESISTATED visibly to sign his "Special assistant performance form", that leads him get paid, and even MORE UPSET that I said I would do if after he got offended, I was at my *BREAKING POINT*.
I was JUST STARTING to finally recover from serious OCD and psychological trauma that these kinds of people gave me as a child, and now they were going to treat me like *PROPERTY AGAIN!?* Getting dragged into a priavte office and given out to by the "special needs support leader", for not signing something OPTIONAL for a lazy and cynical asshole, *PUSHED ME OVER THE FUCKING EDGE MENTALLY!*
Behind my usual fake smiles and acceptance, I started messing outside support services for help against these kinds of abuses, explained everything, wrote down every new abuse that had happened AS it happened, and after a month or so, a regular helper of the outside autism support group that I met during break, helped me put my plan into action that gave the jerk a taste of her own medience: PRESSURE and EVIDENCE making her and the male assistant look really bad.
I insisted on having no assistant from now on, but ultimately settled for one that wouldn't hinder or harm me at all. If anything ever happened to me again, I could do the same process all over again, and assert my *HUMAN RIGHTS!*
That is one of the Proudest, Most Independent, and most Badass moments in my life so far. After a life of torment, abuse, and being treated like a puppet, I cut my own strings and forced change to happen for the better, without any help or advice from my family.
You only got one Life, so *PLEASE* live it to the fullest! Don't waste it in constant fear and torment like I did for my entire adolescence. STAND UP FOR YOURSELF, SO OTHERS CAN HELP YOU DEFY SOCIETY AS WELL!!

from Beast Complex I love the story about Murou and Kameji, it left me crying because the ending was just ahhhhh. Even though Murou bullied Kameji, after Kamji learned what was really going on he offered Murou a way out and friendship.

*SPOILERS FOR DUB VOICES*
I watch dub mainly, but I’ve watched a lot of sub scenes on RUclips before season 2 finally aired on Netflix a few days ago! As soon as it came out I watched the entire season in one go!
Jonah Scott did a really phenomenal job in my opinion this season as Legoshi- as expected to be honest.
Juno was Juno, it was good, although I wish
There was a bit more of a vocal range- I think she sounds the same whenever she’s on screen- but it’s not a bad voice and she’s a side character so I’m not too pressed about it.
Louis’s VA did amazing too, though it was a teeenssssyyyy bit awkward to hear him in his more emotional moments- but it still hit close to home that way. It was handled well all-around in my opinion.
I think Haru’s VA did amazing this season in her little moments. It was nice to hear Haru more lively and having more of a vocal range compared to her depressed S1 self in my opinion- she felt really distinct. I feel like people are hit or miss with haru’s dub voice actor, but in my opinion I actually prefer it alot over the sub VA. She feels depressed and unique compared to her small-animal peers, compared to sub- who’s voice for Haru sounds more like a generic Anime girl LOL (but not bad in quality or anything)
Riz and Ibuki was who I was reallyyy anticipating the most in English, and honestly I am EXTREMELY happy with Riz, Patrick did a great job making you feel sorry for him and making Riz sound innocent as well as terrifying when he gets aggressive. His voice sounds well in contrast to Legoshi’s!
Ibuki’s voice- I’m iffy about. I don’t think it’s a absolutely terrible, but I still don’t know how I feel about it. I like how gravely his voice sounded as a depressed Lion who lived his life a beast of the Black Market, but I think his voice and a few of his lines in the car with Louis didn’t hit so close to home like it did in the Japanese version (which is still not as good as the manga tbh)
I just manage to watch it now... (haven't got the chance to read the manga but idc about spoiler knowign i can just easily forget sometimes) and i just realise somethingat 2:56... WAS THAT A MAID OUTFIT?!
