Painting a Crowd Scene in Gouache

  • Painting people at a busy crossroads of the Dutchess County fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, New York.
    Gouache-also known as opaque watercolor- is ideal for this kind of painting because you can place layer over layer and fix anything. It also makes it easy to drop in the edge lighting on the top left of the forms.
    The colors are limited to about six: White, ultramarine blue, purple, yellow ochre, flame red, and burnt sienna. Because everyone is moving so fast, each figure is created directly with the brushes, without any preliminary drawing.

    Thank you for these videos.
    I see on your website that you have done several Plein-Air paintings in Oil. Is there a reason you chose to move to Gouache and Casein in the last few years since traditionally artists have always used Oil?
    It would be great if the artwork images on your site were a little larger. These days with high definition screens large images are common on most artist's websites. It would also lead to more visitors to the website. I understand the issue of people stealing images. But, you could always watermark them to make it difficult.

      Hi, Xiao, I use oil too, but I like gouache and casein because of portability, speed, and easy clean up-plus they're ideal for sketchbooks and they photograph well. I've been uploading larger images in the last few years, but I still have some small files on the website.

    I always thought about how people must look at James painting in public and not realize he's one of the greatest living illustrators. So I was glad to see the woman's commentary and reaction included in the video. I hope she did some research later and found out who she had complimented; probably thinking she was being nice to a gentle hobbyist. When in fact she was talkin' to the JG himself.

    The lady in the video that said she sees a lot of modern art didn't seem to recognize you. You are well known in the art world so I'm wondering if you get recognized often in the general public. To me I've followed your art for almost thirty years so were old friends even if you were not aware of it. :)

    I'm so impressed by the way you managed to capture the colours and light contours so easily in the scene - and with not a single brushtroke to correct the one underneath! Your work is amazing, and this picture is no exception :) It was a pleasure to watch you work on it! Keep up the great work

    Most people dont know, but for artists its not a compliment when you say they are talentet

    • @mamezofl-wdmn8672
      @mamezofl-wdmn8672 7 лет назад +35

      actually i'ts fine, you just have to be ok with that sort of compliments even tho in your mind you know that it's not about talent but about hard work, ppl just want to express their appreciation somehow

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX 7 лет назад +9

      Yeah it's almost like denying how an artist actually has spend most of their life improving their skill with hundreds if not thousands of drawings or paintings made. I'm not sure whether or not I'm a believer in 'talent' anyway. Someone can have a certain skill at start that might be impressive in a relative sense, but just about everyone I've come across so far who appeared to have 'talent' also revealed what incredible amounts of effort was put in to reach the skill level they are at. None of them got to an extraordinary level of skill from one day to the next so to speak. Perhaps there are people who have the extraordinary ability to really envision what they're about to draw or paint exactly, possibly aided by photographic memory and such. But needless to say, those are the very rare exceptions. (Maybe someone like Kim Jung Gi?? I'm sure he's drawn and painted hundreds if not thousands of pieces of art too though. )

      The thing is that people use the word talented as a way of saying you're skilled. Yeah it's not something you're born with, but it's a compliment nontheless.

    Hi Mr. Gurney,
    What pen do you use to sign and title your paintjngs? I like how fine tip the pen is, but its challenging to find something that writes well on coarse paper.

    Hello, Mr. Gurney! I'm not sure if you will see my comment anytime soon, but I purchased your video and was watching the snowy scene part when I wondered about something--zinc white. I remember hearing something about using zinc white instead of titanium white to mix with other colors, but I don't really remember why. When and how would you use each of the two whites?
