do you have any tips for integrating background and foreground together? mine always seem out of place, like i photoshopped two images together
In general it helps to set up some kind of progression of value and color temperature from near to far. The way you handle middle ground can also help tie fore-and background together. You can spotlight middle ground while putting fore and back in shadow or vice versa.
i wish i could live in your paintings..
You're one of my favorite artists and art teachers. I love watching your videos not just to learn art and get better at painting but also as therapy for my brain. Thank you!!
I’m so delighted! With such a short video You explained sooo much! I’m tremendously grateful! God bless you! Big hug!
I cracked up with the explosion sound effect toward the end.
That was short and sweet and amazing
The picture looks better than reality :/
every paiting will always look better than reality, trust me
Was just thinking that
That’s the job of an artist
Or else you could just take a photo
Hailey Anderson photography is art too!
Thanks a lot for sharing more techniques James! This is super useful! Unlike most of your videos that make painting look easy (although we know it is not), I actually find that this one shows how complex things get when you add up shapes, a back-lit subject, atmosphere, many shades of dull/greyish colours, soft/hard edges, people moving and possibly coming to chat, etc. There are so many layers that one has to keep finding their way through to make a beautiful painting :-)
Thank you. Your comments show a lot of insight into the many kinds of concerns we bring to such a challenge. It's hard to keep a hold of the big picture, even when working small.
I know i should not swear but that was fucking great. I always learn something. Boi next month i will buy some sweet James Gurney Videos.
Yes! The late afternoon atmosphere is my favorite! And you absolutely gorgeous show it in your painting! Thanks for sharing 😊
He should have ten times more subscriptions, he's one of the best on YT..
Master Technique.... Awesome painting as always
The drawing looks a lot older and more atmospheric than the scene itself. Sign of a great painter.
Amazing reflctions of the place in whole! Thanx!
Hi, I am from Brazil. I've just started using watercolor. I like a lot when you show the equipment you use and those you customize. I would like to see more of your studio, the materials you have and the thing you use for reference. You are a great inspiration for me, specially the Dinotopia books. I read the first when I was 10 years old.
Another fascinating video, thank you! I love how you divide lights in cool and warm tones. Your art is so inspiring!
You're like a modern Bob Ross. Your videos relax me.
You're soooo gooood!!!!! Thank you for the vid!
James Gurney is amazing!
yeah that last part was insane and nuts
You're an inspiration as ever James
Another great painting James. Love the amount of detail you get in these small paintings. I definitely don't have the patience to work this detailed in realizm yet. Hats off!
I love watching these James! The control you have over the medium is amazing as well as your understanding of light and atmosphere.
That was a great tutorial. Thank you.
I can't understand how casein can still be so hard to get a hold of. There is at the moment only one manufacturer (Richeson) in the whole world that does casein based artist paint. Great video, as usual. Powerful sound effects at the end.
Thanks, learned more about watercolor light values, gouache and why not to use straight black in 3 minutes than in hours of other video.
Beautiful James...... the help was great ..... the music and the scene a bonus!
This was an awesome video
Simply amazing. 😍 You're an art role model to me. Currently working through your books and very glad I bought them. So super helpful. I adore how you turned the "normal street scene" into an atmospheric painting. I hope to learn even more about lighting and mood in art here on your RUclips channel. Thank you very much for the insight and inspiration! You rock.
Amazing, that piece is just gorgeous.
Your picture is very good ~♡

Wow, you are absolutely amazing! I also just bought Dinotopia to examine your paintings in beautiful detail :D
Hello James, I’m a big fan of your videos and recently started binge watching them to the point that it has inspired me to create a Plein Air Painting Society here at Lancaster University UK (Lancaster Plein Air Art Society, we have 20 members so far, soon to be more as requests to join are increasing and we haven’t put out any flyers yet!), I was wondering whether you would record or Pen a small message of encouragement for young nervous artists starting out on this intimidating craft. It would make all of our days and strengthen our sense of community among painters.
Many thanks and God bless,
Alex
Kingston NY?! I'm from that area!!! 😎👌🏽
👍👍👍
nicely done
Lovely
Wow
Light, atmosphere, smoke, sky
That's the goal, to capture those qualities.
😍
😀👏🎨👍🇧🇷
is this style of painting called impressionism ?
I have to know this, did you ever paint a piece for a Magic the Gathering card?
MikidyMike Doesn't seem like it.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Magic:_The_Gathering_artists
No, I haven't painted for MTG.
Why don't you upload the whole process of u painting....
I noticed you have done a couple videos as time lapses. could you make a time lapse of this painting?
I've been experimenting with different cameras. This time I just used a point-and-shoot and shot real time. So sorry, I didn't get a time lapse capture of this one.
James Gurney totally fine, I thought I would ask. I always appreciate the amazing videos you do. I just wanted to see how you painted crowds. I always find crowds very intimidating.
Details don’t matter as much as getting the correct values. Always have to remind myself.
I love how you killed the white early on and built built a scene around temperature and value. Everything else seemed incidental.
Atleast post one complete tutorial 😐.. please!
