- First the Classic Vibe, then Contemporary? AND NOW AN AFFINITY STARCASTER?!?!?! It's $100 cheaper, but is it any good? Ryan plays around a bit and then figures out which Starcaster he would buy.

I love that you actually commit to an opinion. So many similar channels are so woolly and non-committal - plus they're nowhere near as fun.
I already feel my money leaving my wallet. That classic vibe one looks amazing
@Dany Martinez he's not pointing to the affinity one.
I think the affinity looks good. I prefer one tone and volume pot, and no pick guard. And swap the pups and you have what you want at a good price. I like the Arctic white, but that is of course personal
Just finished modding a Candy Apple Red Affinity, I pulled out the entire harness and pickups, replaced with CTS 1Meg Pots, Switchcraft switch & jack, paper in oil tone cap, treble bleed and a set of hand wound Martin A Smith humbucker sized Wide Ranges, it sounds killer. I went with the 1 Meg pots, because that's what the 70's guitars with Wide Ranges came with as stock.
Hey im new to guitars so I was just wondering what does changing the pups do to change the guitar? I definitely want a semi hollow body but im looking at one with two humbuckers and a single coil for the best of both worlds.
I think this one is aimed at the "mod platform" person while the CV is aimed at the "play it as it is" person. I think I'm gonna go with the affinity and drop some new pups in there.
It might also be a good beginner guitar for someone who likes semi hollow guitars
I love semi hollows, offset guitars, and my personal preference is actually always just one volume and tone knob. I’m always going to be less wild about maple necks and the stock Starcaster headstock. I would consider maybe a Warmoth neck, maybe a Jazzmaster style or something with a different fretboard material, or even something from guitarfetish. I’ve had this idea for a while of a guitar with a p90 and a filtertron. And maybe the planetwaves auto trim locking tuners. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with this guitar as it is. It’s absolutely the one I would buy in terms of what it is right out of the box.
@Hideo_22 How? If the body & neck are both made of decent wood, that means with decent electronic aftermarket parts, they should be as good as the high end version.
I am thinking about getting the affinity and putting in new pickups and having push-pull pots for phase and coil split and a 4way switch for series and parallel.
I play the modern player reissue and I will probably mod all of these for different styles. I can see this getting out of hand honestly, but I just love this guitar :D
I love the 90s era grunge tone with the high gain. Man, 300 bucks??? Nice!
I agree, love the Classic Vibe you demo'd. Maybe when I get bored with my Streamliner 2655T since they seem too similar to justify adding the Starcaster to my meager fleet.
Damn the Affinity series is so cool. So much bang for the buck. They vary a bit guitar to guitar, but one of my Affinity Teles is my favorite guitar right now above my several Fenders.
Affinities are super sick for what they are, but I think they definitely shine once they’re modded a little bit
Is it worth the money to mod these vs just getting a Classic Vibe?
You HAVE to het the classic vibe. I never Fell in love with a squier before as im kind of An American guitar snob. But WOW. Its awesome.
Twan Theunisz, I would challenge you to give the Squier standard, Classic and Contemporary strats a trial run. Check them out for quality workmanship, feel and sound. Bear in mind you can always upgrade all of the hardware, pickups and wiring to your choosing. If you own an MIA Fender because it has good resale value, then that is the only model you should buy. But, if you like tinkering and upgrading hardware and cosmetics, then buying a cheaper Fender (even a Squier) and buy all of the after market stuff you want. I have several Fender Strats plus a Squier Standard strat. I did a major overhaul of everything in my Squier, and it sounds as good or better than any American, plus the satin finish neck is perfect for my size hand. I'm also in my 60's and will play until I die. It has become my favorite guitar. Squiers require an open mind.
The affinities are my favorite out of all of the starcasters honestly, im a sucker for open faced pickups
I prefer the Affinity for the satin finish neck and two less knobs, but the Classic Vibe is such a beautiful looking guitar. If I purchase the Affinity, I would eventually put Seymour Duncan pickups. Someone mentioned TV Jones. Hum? I like the f-holes, as well. Both? Thanks for all the informative videos.
Hands down the classic vibe. I’m tempted to buy one myself!
That cream white with black binding...I need this.. Mabe put in some black duncan p-rails and push/pull pots.
A year late but I’m scratching my head trying to decide which one. I like the CV in walnut but you hit the nail on the head with modding.
Get one. I will watch any video about squier starcasters
For me the Affinity is the best option. Those pups are going to be swapped anyway, maybe some nice SD Vintage Blues in there. Sweet sounding, sweet looking semi alternative!
I really want the wide range version, and I'm the keyboardist in my band! 😂
A good and honest review. Many thanks!
That's kick ass. I've loved squires. But I honestly feared the starcaster line. I suppose this is non cardboard particle board laminate etc. Nice job Fender Squire.
Affinity Starcaster Candy Apple Red, I like the Classic Vibe in Walnut but that Candy Apple Red, whew!
Yeah, I just got one, and it is the prettiest color on any guitar I"ve ever seen.
Thank you for doing comparison videos on these!
What a cool guitar! Squier has a nice looking line up of guitars for SNAMM
Just got a gloss black one with a maple neck & board! Plays great, sounds great, feels great & looks great! 👌
0:25 the lick
is the guy behind you scratching his crank at 4:20?
yep......i just saw it
Yeah, gross
I like the Squier Contemporary Starcaster because it doesn't have f-holes and just looks cooler. Also, the active pups sound pretty good. It would be easier to mod since it has a back plate. Fishing out parts through the f-holes seems like a pain.
You don't go through the body like that you take off the jackplate and feed the pots and wires through there pickups hafta be put in through the top and ran thru.
That classic vibe works for me!
I can't wait for the CV Starcaster. I haven't been let down by the Classic Vibe series yet and I've been eyeing Starcasters for a while now. Definitely getting one.
Cheers man! All cool, but diggin’ the CV!
Thanks for these videos. So far I haven't seen anyone else covering new low end gear, yet way more Squiers will be sold than most anything else :-)
Agree with you on the classic vibe. The surf green is just not for this body shape. That being said you should get neither! Save the money and get the Dick Dale strat. We all know you love it! It would be great to see it on the background on all your videos.
I really like the look of this one...especially the red one. I think. 😃 I'm still thinking about it. Thanks for the demo!
D'you think they're trying to take a shot at players who'd normally go for Dots?
Great review and demo. Would have liked more info on the set up out of the box. But Thanks
Getting one dropping some TV Jones Classics in there 🤔
Yeah, I'm really diggin' the CV too...it's damn near identical to the Fender Modern Player Starcaster, which I SERIOUSLY wanted but couldn't free up $700 to get...let's see if I can do $400 instead! (gawd, I hate being broke lol)
I play the Modern Player as my main guitar for almost 4 years now and it's just a really great guitar. Do it. Those Wide Range Humbuckers are great for almost everything.
Ryan, do these sound anything like a Gibson/Epiphone 335 style guitar?
Or, are they very much there own thing? 💕😃🎸
To my ears they sound like their own thing. The pickups sound tighter. Plenty of Gibson-like humbuckers out you can use if the feel of the guitar and price is right for you.
I think people should get this guitar based on the headstock alone. It provides a unique look
I WILL BUY THAT
These are gonna give the Epiphone ES series a run for their money.
I would love to get the Classic Vibe but I really wanted it to have the back access panel. I love semi hollows but they're a pain to work on if you don't have the correct tools.
The white is really nice, but I'm buying the red one.
A very good demonstration and critique. I wish you gave some attention to the back side. I wanted to see how much contour there was in the body and if the neck was 100% satin finish like the Affinity strats and teles. Also get a close look at the back of the headstock. Where are these made? and get a close look at the tuners. Also, the Fender website shows a red one in the Affinity models. The most popular color for an ES335 design is red. I would've liked to have seen a red one. Please do another more lengthy review from your house.
Golf Hound I don’t have any of these at home. If I end up getting one it will be the classic vibe.
I 'll go for the Classic Vibes cause it's the closest to the original by Fender, equivalent to the ES 335 by Epiphone and generally speaking it's a different guitar than all the others. That's why you go for a Starcaster in the first place.
wow blown away by the affinity starcaster. not bad stock but would definitely put on new pickups on them such as p90s
Okay, I'm getting one :) :) :)
I will install a Les Trem, roller bridge, tusq nut, locking tuners on it...
Humbuckers/ electronics I don't know yet, we'll see...
For electronics I am thinking of push-pull pots for coil split and phase switch and a four way switch for series and parallel wiring once I can actually afford a new guitar.
I have a bullet strat and it is very easy to play for some reason, one of my easiest guitars to play next to my epiphones
I'm thinking of picking up a red one in October. We shall see.
So sweet!
How would the affinity stack up against the Ibanez AS63 or AM53?
The pickups seem pretty jangly. Who do you think it's aimed at? Indie rockers? I do love that it's a semi hollow with a maple fretboard. You don't see that often.
They will work for indie, but my band recently used it in the studio and got everything from "no surprises" style high picked parts to really saturated hard rock tones. This was one of the proper fender ones with widespaced humbuckers. Surprisingly versatile guitars
Looks & sounds good for the cheaper of the 3 ... will check out the cv video you did now. :)
Why not buy two, one to mod and one classic vibe?
I LOVE THESE.they need to do a pure white though.glad they made it a bolt on neck.
Early Cuyler It’s been a bolt on since the 70s.
I prefer this one!
I need a semi hollow to round out my collection and all my other electrics are Squiers, so this baby might be a no brainer...
This goes well with my modded white contemporary tele.
Been looking forward to your coverage of these since I heard about them. I've been wanting a Starcaster for a while now. I agree, I think the CV one would be my choice. Want to hear the pickups in person, but they sound fine in the CV video you did. That being said, I would kinda like to get one of these and put some HB sized Goldfoil pickups in it ha
Classic Vibe would be my choice too.
The CV is the one I’d go for.
I want a bass version of this guitar. I know there is a full blown Fender version out, it's just a shame I have no way to afford it. Admittedly the guitar version makes me think someone bolted a Fender neck with a miss-cut headstock onto a Gibson 335 body.
Yeeah! Awesome Guitar! but i think it wont be offered for leftys anytime soon, as i know fender... :-C
You could flip the bridge
Do you think those are the same pickups as the bullet mustang?
That's probably a good bet.
I ´ve chance to buy one of this by 155 dolars. What you think? Is good choice? M Thanks
You should go for the classic vibe...
i really do like this kind of electic guitar but could you tell me where i should buy it iam in brockville ontario
Oh no - no binding around the f -holes!!...deal-breaker! hehe what a killer guitar...
its the best looking of the 3
I’ve been playing with the idea of modding this model with an air norton in the neck position and possibly (very) a tone zone in the bridge?
I am playing with the Idea to buy one, take it apart, stain it and mod it
what do you think?
what could go wrong? its a good project starter at $300
Narrow tall frets ? Can I get this in medium jumbo ?
My Christmas gift to myself will either be the Classic Vibe, or the Epiphone 339. But I can't decide....
Gary Novak Well, the Starcaster is much bigger than the 339. Also, the scale is 25.5 opposed to the 339s 24.75. Otherwise, they’re similar.
I find in general the indo guitars (i have had a few) sound better accoustically than the epi chinese guitars. More "life" if you will. I like the style of the 339 but haven't found one i enjoyed playing... at the store haha... the the squeirs sre a better price point in most places too
Comparing the necks from the CV to the affinity, is it the same neck but one is tinted (and black flash) and the other without the tint? Is it thin? Cheers
Should've gone full Gibson with P90s.. Also about time they'll do affinity tele custom, thinline and deluxe
Head stock kills it
Not another one! You're gonna bankrupt me man! I'm poor enough as it is!! ;)
For folks wanting to know neck specs:
All the info is on Fender site - shop.fender.com/en-US/squier-electric-guitars/other/affinity-series-starcaster/0370590500.html
Neck Shape "C" Shape
Scale Length 25.5" (648 mm)
Fingerboard Material Maple
Fingerboard Radius 9.5" (241 mm)
Number of Frets 22
What's better, this or the Firefly?
this is a better guitar quality wise,,, but the firefly has its charms. Thats a tough one.
Jazzmaster trem and im in!
a good tech could probably do that mod. but would probably charge more than the guitar is worth. you would have a budget bilt going on though.
a Duesenberg Les Trem II would be an equally good option given it has a TOM bridge.
Ben Hackett the Les Trem by Duesenberg is a very affordable and easy to install vibrato. Far superior to any licensed bigsby.
@@60CycleHumcast Who started that headstock 1st, Bilt or Fender?
@@BoltRM fender released the starcaster in the 70s, i dont think bilt was around then, lol.
I hear a nice tone, maybe some Early Beatles, 60`s stuff? ..country easy...not a bad design.
If you're a modder like me, you are salivating over this platform. Fender scores!
Hey, Gibson! Stop wearing your corporate sphincter muscle as a necklace. Do something real!
Contemporary starcaster without f holes looks like evh wolfgang little bit
Retro? check!
Ugly? check!
Excellent.
Get the affinity
This is my opinion ...just an opinion Fender guitars are coming out with some cool looking guitars but I've noticed the quality of the guitars going down.
Fender are fucking geniuses. They know the internet are complaining about Gibson's overpricing of shuddy quality and #playauthentic bullshit so Fender release a dual humbucker hollow-body for $300 knowing full-well Gibson's idiocy has will leave a gap in the market that they and other gibson competitors can fill. Also, they need to catch up to PRS who are acclaimed for making amazing quality for the price and definitely made the right choice to produce a guitar under the $500 mark
Squier always surprise
I wish they would pick a body style for the "starcaster" and stick with it. >_< Cool guitar though. What you call the headstock shape... "Sneakers? :D
Are you talking about the strat shaped solid guitar? I think Starcaster is technically the brand in that context
are you talking about the super super cheap strat style guitars they had out years back labeled 'starcaster'?
@@oneeyedlittleman Yeah I suppose so but on every place you see them sold its always "Fender Starcaster" Not Starcaster by Fender just confusing I think. Even search it on google.. you will see listings for them lol
@@60CycleHumcast they made acoustics, basses, and drums all labeled starcasters along with the strats!
@@60CycleHumcast Yep. thats the one. This is truer to the original starcaster. but still.. third use of the same name third "different" product.
Get the 400$ one and mod it into....a FireFly!!!!
I just ordered one from my buds from Sweetwater. I know my Wife is going pest. But of well. What the Hell.
What’s with mr mohawk stalking you?
Cv sunburst me wants!!! Wifey can't tell between my 5 sunburst guitars!!!
Hey man, that was the largest parrot I’ve ever seen.
Now I need to decide if I want one of these or to buy the Fender Starcaster from 2013...dangit.
CV definitely looks at least $100 more, and the Affinity pickups don't sound good (but it would be as well to A/B the two guitars). I'd go C̶l̶a̶s̶s̶i̶c̶ ̶V̶i̶b̶e̶ Epiphone 339.
why epi 339 tho?
@@fighterlaneina_ The Epihone 339 is a quality compact semi acoustic guitar, with good sounding (splittable) pickups. I own one, and chose it in preference to Gretsch and Ibanez models. I didn't compare it to Fenders or Squiers, but would recommend doing so if you're looking for this style of guitar.
yea the model is really good, and i still confused which one to buy the jazzmaster or the epi 339, cuz i want to play some alternative and indie rock in the epi guitar, maybe it would fit perfectly lol
@@fighterlaneina_ You can play any kind of music on any guitar, as long as you're happy with the sound! But the 339's splittable pickups do make it quite versatile.
well thanks for the info dude, have a great day🌻
I hate that headstock. Would a strat neck fit?
Well I just Got The Candy Apple Affinity And Am Thinking About Throwing Some p90's Or Filtertrons In Her. She Plays nice. Im Not Much Of A Humbucker player.
It being an Affinity, I was sort of expecting to see STARC on the headstock instead of the full model name.
I'm really digging the contemporary 🤷♂️
Neck pickup seems pretty weak in this demo. Cool guitar though.
