Lee- “The starcaster came out in the 70s” Rob- “I’ve never heard of it before” Me- *remembers the video in 2013 when Rob and Lee reviewed them* Love you guys, been watching since I started playing
to be fair if you reviewed that many guitars and produce that many videos chances are you might forget a model or two here and there, wouldn't you agree mate...?
I love these. It's so rare to see semi-hollow guitars with a maple fretboard. I love semi-hollows and archtops, but I also love the feel of maple fretboards.
I bought the Affinity Starcaster during the first lockdown. I've played, and own(ed) pricier guitars, but wanted a semi-hollow bodied guitar, having regretfully got rid of one in the nineties. To be honest I was utterly more than just happy when I unboxed the guitar. It is so easy to play, well made, and sounds gorgeous. I play it more than my other guitars. I'll never get rid of it. Much impressed. I've been a customer of Andertons since first visiting the first shop in Haydon Place. Despite expanding to larger premises, Lee has retained the friendly atmosphere of the old place. Staff are always helpful and friendly. Well done!
I love these! As much as I do love the traditional Fender products, my favourite Fenders are the ones that are a bit offbeat and quirky, and these definitely belong in that category.
I'm getting back into guitar after over a decade of being away from it, and have one of these arriving tomorrow. Honestly stoked - and everyone who has one seems to love them. Excited to get back into it.~
The headstock is fine, but I'm not liking the sound of the seafoam green paint. Coral blue generally has far more bite, especially when paired with maple sourced from the northern half of Scotland.
Lol the sad thing is it took me half a second to realize this was sarcasm. This joke comment is just standard fare on guitar forums who argue over tonewood.
The Starcaster shape was the inspiration for Paul Languedoc's incredible full hollowbody guitars that he first built for Trey Anastasio of Phish- astounding instruments if you have $10,000 laying around.
I love these guitars. One of these is at the top of my guitar purchase list. But for now, I'm building a solid instrument that's loosely a Starcaster/Tele hybrid.
I’m a bit shocked by the active model, but honestly because I tend to “box in” active pickups. They really get the “sweet spot” a lot of times. Beautifully done. You could always trick one out with a baked maple neck from Warmoth and still be under $500.
Great review! That ethereal intro/shoegaze instrumental jam was sooo good that it has me currently thinking about getting that Starcaster Contemporary in Ice Blue Metallic for our record release show in November...very tempting! (now back to that intro tune one more time...) Cheers, J
Honestly, I love the Classic Vibe Starcaster. Really, the only thing you need to do to it is swap the pickups and hardware for American Fender, and you can turn it INTO an American Fender. Well, I say NEED. Everything in the Classic Vibe series is amazing as-is. If there was an actual Fender Starcaster, I would probably buy it, too. Otherwise, I am perfectly-happy to continue turning Classic Vibes into American Fenders.
«... Hopefully Rory will put The Colours on the screen now, cause I’ll guarantee you’ll know one or two of their hits...» 😂😂😂 I mean... I don’t know if there are awards for best video editers on RUclips or such, but here is a guy that behind curtains have been raising the bar constantly, lifting the entertainment factor of what could have been just another gear demo channel. Obviously the blokes are funnier than most gear demonstators, but I don’t even know if I’d on a regular basis watch almost every single video you put out, if it wasn’t for him.🙌🏼 Praise Lord Rory!🙌🏼
Love 'em. Want to hear more clean play. Nice review all in all. I hope they stay around this time. Love the headstock! Fender feel and punch is my game. Thanks fellas, happy holidays!
I've been looking for "my" semi for a few years now, and after buying and selling two that I didn't get along with, I realized what I needed was a comfortable neck. I am attuned to Fender, I love candy colors, and I love offsets -- so I got the CAR Affinity. I'm very very happy. Might swap the pickups if I feel like tinkering, but I am getting the same general tones heard here. The neck is the standard generic Fender/Squier comfortable C, and that has really made this the perfect semi for me. And on a budget!
Okay, so what was going on at 9:33? I'm not seeing it after way too many slow replays. :) I've seen the Starcasters now and then over the years. In fact, a local indie band here in Dallas (Brave Little Howl) where a member played one.
Tones of the intro jam sound really close to David Gilmour! Reminds of something like Dark Side of the Moon, and that is definitely awesome. Cheers for the showcase
At first I thought those headstocks were pants, but seeing it from a bit of a distance made it blend in quite well with the rest of the guitar, especially for the contemporaries where there is a sliver of body color. I like those much, much more than the all natural headstocks that's for sure.
Radiohead, The Killers, Death Cab For Cutie, Royal Blood, and Arctic Monkeys come to mind...I love the Starcaster, it’s like the love child of the 335 and a Jazzmaster.
I really dig these.. had no idea they even existed till last night and a run down of Wayne Husseys rig. Ahh, that cherry red. Sod the Harley Benton purchase, this will be my next guitar
The jam in the beginning reminds me of the orange rocker 15/30 videos jam. It's really pleasant sounding. Genuinely surprised rob and lee have never made an ep of these sorts of jams. I'd buy it
I have a 1973 Fender Starcaster. The plug switch got soaked and no longer works. The problem could be bigger. I need to install new plug and probably wires. How do I do this without losing the plug inside the guitar?
Oh no my wallet is in trouble. I’ve recently been thinking, as two separate thoughts “I want a sea foam green fender” and “I want a guitar with EMGs”, but also “I can’t afford another guitar”. Damn.
The Starcasters we vet here from Bajaoo n Amazon India are not equipped with the Wide Range humbuckers but an ordinary plastic based hums. Do Fenders go out of their way to ensure we get a lower quality ones? What do you guys think?
Chappers” I’ve never heard of it...” 5 years ago. Fender Modern Player Starcaster and Coronado2... in Rob’s defense he does play a few different guitars. Most interesting thing I saw when I went back and watched that video(other than Chapper’s dreads and the Movember ‘staches the boys were sporting) was that was a Chinese made guitar at £600 compared to these £250-350 Indonesian ones. Loved the tone on both though and funky, different is cool.
Got the black contemporary from you this week. Very pleased. Not no.4 but more like no.14 or 15 !! As you say another more freeky guitar for my collection. Great little player though. 👍👍🙋♂️🎸
When a 335 and a Jazzmaster love each other very much...
With a lil bit of Wolfgang, watching outside the window 👁👁

Something stunning about semi-hollow style guitars with maple fretboards, could it catch on?
@@andertons One can only hope.
Funny, my biggest gripe is that not a single version comes with a rosewood/pau ferro/laurel fretboard... All maple!
@@Luzuuu I think these would look way better with roasted maple necks.
The headstocks look like a Converse boot with the lace holes made up of tuners
Welp. I can't unsee that.
That's a whole lot nicer then what I think it looks like.
Its like from bilt guitars
I always thought it looked like a Nike Cortez mate... The shoeadstock...
@@bappoed4586 bilt got it from fender first tho hehe
If they put out a Squier Contemporary Meteora, I'll spend the money gladly.
Me too.
they almost did- look at the offset paranormal tele....
Same!

I caught that clip of Muse while Lee was plugging the guitar in.
Lee and Rob too.
Plug in baby- Andy is a smart man. True comedic genius. I can hardly contain myself.
Andy? You mean Rory, the editor?
What time stamp?
Olav Johann Orvik i do- my phone corrects Rory to Andy automatically
They do look like someone melted a ES-335.
Melted ES-335 with a road-worn finish... Could catch on ;)
But be honest... they are pretty cool looking
@@elliotcoombes5605 Everything but the headstock, but that's fixable.
Indeed its the Salvador Dali of hollow Bodies mate....
I had an original 70's Coronado I, that I lost to the pawn shop. Now, I want one of these to sooth my soul.
Johnny greenwood from radiohead was a big starcaster player
I love these! As much as I do love the traditional Fender products, my favourite Fenders are the ones that are a bit offbeat and quirky, and these definitely belong in that category.
If they just put that little strip of candy apple red on the headstock of that Affinity, that would just look wicked.
Love it when Rob plays this bluesy style, he has so much talent as a guitarist, not keen on the shredding stuff, but he is an amazing player
There'll be a Jim Root sig of that EMG one soon enough.
One can only hope
Well there is one with emg and close up f holes.
As a fan of The Killers I freaking love this. 😍
I'm getting back into guitar after over a decade of being away from it, and have one of these arriving tomorrow. Honestly stoked - and everyone who has one seems to love them. Excited to get back into it.~
I’m in love with these! I’ve always wanted a Starcaster, I have a thing for that weirdo headstock. Definitely picking up one of these soon!
Here in 2023 thanks to Tom Delonge! Seriously considering one of these Starcasters now!

Trey Anastasio’s Languedoc is based on a Starcaster.
I've always said, the Brits built the amps and we Americans built the guitars. What a musical collaboration !
hey, Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead, anyone?
Who?
adiohead Literally saying his name right there
adiohead love yoy

hink he's oking
LMFAO love how it looks like a Wolfgang got a Dave Grohl model prego
Guitar 4 absolutely, best description yet
I seriously fall of my chair laughing from the random edits you guys put into your videos hahaha. pure gold
Jonny Greenwood is worth mentioning using this guitar, but a Fender one...
Lee - I cant imagine anyone grew up wanting a Starcaster......
Me - *raises hand*
Dave from the Killers uses one. Which would be a Cool Sounds Like.
That contemporary model is freaking beautiful...
1. Beach Ball edit always gets a like.
2. I love the vibe of these and don’t need one in any way so I’ll probably get one.
The Starcaster shape was the inspiration for Paul Languedoc's incredible full hollowbody guitars that he first built for Trey Anastasio of Phish- astounding instruments if you have $10,000 laying around.

@@Chris-ob6es Yup. I ordered a Phred a while back- not dropping a house downpayment on a guitar!
i got my affinity candy apple red starcaster in febuary and i absolutly love it.
Always thought they'd look better with a dark fingerboard and colour matched headstock.
The red in person is too cool, had to get it, @$130 its hard to say no to that.

Spot on
Platycaster maybe? :P

Cool chord work, Lee. Really liked that intro. And Rob's riffage at 07:45 was very a la Valley of The Sun...

i just bought my daughter the red one, she loves it and so do i, great tones.
Goes to show that good players don't need expensive guitars to sound good! Nice demo. Thanks.
Plug In Baby easter egg made this.
Sound Like Muse BY busting the bank confirmed?
William Allison pft I wish. That first one sucked
That and the Colours coming up on screen. I guarantee you'll know one or two of their hits.

Just bought one yesterday. Damn the guitar clings to my soul.
I plan to get one of the contemporary models and swap out the active electronics for passives.
Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead plays one. When he does he uses the massive headstock to play keyboard pads too.
Can’t beat the original ones classic natural finish
I want an original in black
Just ordered the classic vibe natural from you today, so excited.

Just bought a black affinity, well worth the money!!
Do these guys play the guitar unprocessed, or is it all overdriven or flanged out?
