Does Hyaluronic Acid cause Cancer?! What does the Evidence say?

  • Today I'm giving my thoughts on the video created by ‪@10YearsYounger‬this video was highlighted to me by a couple of subscribers to question the information on Hyaluronic Acid and its possible connection to cancer.
    This study states:
The challenging characteristic of conventional HAs in the use of topically applied anti-aging preparations has been that its molecules are 3,000nm in diameter, whereas the intercellular space is only 15 to 50nm and just 6 to lOnm at the hyaline membrane.1 This makes it impossible for conventionally produced HA to penetrate into deep layers of the dermis.2
    (www.ncbi.nlm.n...)
This is the video I mentioned about why HA doesn't work in skincare longterm:

This is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen. You are considered, fact based and articulate. The problem I have with HA is that it doesn’t work! I think it’s been the Emperor’s New Clothes of skin care marketing. I stopped using it ages ago and my skin is now LESS dry! You are looking as well as I’ve ever seen you. Keep up the great work! ♥️😀♥️

Thanks for making this video, Karen! As someone who has been taking HA supplements for a while, for me, the concern over this information coming to light was not use of topical HA, but ingested HA.
Having had a cursory look, it appears that both within skincare and supplementation, it is low-molecular weight HA that is problematic (pro-inflammatory, pro-scar forming, and promoting of tumour growth). Conversely, high weight molecular HA seems to be anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer (naked mole rats are often referenced as being cancer-resistant due to high levels of HA in their bodies - it is high molecular weight HA).
It turns out the supplement I have been taking for about a year for anti-ageing benefits is actually low weight HA (which is often promoted as superior due to being absorbable by the gut). However, on the basis of the info around on low-weight HA, I don't like the idea of putting a pro-inflammatory substance into my body as that is not going to do me any good at all whatsoever. Although a direct link is yet to be found between taking HA supplements and cancer, it doesn't mean one won't be found down the road. As yet, this may not even have been studied. As both my mother and her mother suffered from breast cancer and both later died of pancreatic cancer, I like to exercise extra caution around anything that has the potential to increase risk. As a result, I will now discontinue use of the LOW molecular weight HA supplement I was taking (it was a 600mg capsule too, so an especially high dose!). I may decide to switch to HIGH weight HA supplements if research supports this. Or I may just stay away from them altogether. Thank you for offering us your insights on this topic 😊.

Karen, you are definitely in your element in this video! Glad I ran into your video first, as I do occasionally watch the other youtuber. I definitely would have been concerned and started doing some research on my own... but I would never have been able to understand the actual papers and conclude whether their research methods and number of test subjects are valid in the same way that you do. I appreciate your eloquence and graciousness in sharing your expertise. Ciao from Italy! L P.S. I take a HA supplement daily. I started for aesthetic reasons (and it has delivered in lessening my naso-labial folds) but it also contributes to making my achy knee disappear and managing my hiatal hernia-caused acid reflux (I take it with little water in the morning in so I can do my workouts and bend over without tasting my breakfast a second time).

Ironically my supplementation of High Molecular Weight (HMW) Hyaluronic Acid is to prevent cancer and is because of the scientific studies carried out by Dr. Vera Gorbunova.

HA is not an issue with external skin care, but it could be when taken internally as a supplement. Further studies are currently being conducted on the possible connection to cancer. I don't think we need to put our heads in the sand on this one. The dynamics are there, in how tumor cells eat up HA like sugar. Personally, I don't think it's worth the risk. Pancreatic cancer is a killer.

I was recently diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus to my surprise. I don't smoke, I was a very light social drinker ( I could go months without a drink), I rarely had symptoms of heartburn. I'm told this is regarded as a precancerous condition. I have to have an endoscopy yearly now. I started taking Hyaluronic acid orally a few weeks ago because I saw it was on Bryan Johnson's supplement protocol. ( he is the multi-millionaire working with a team of doctors to reverse his age. Hyaluronic Acid is supposed to help the condition of your skin and I also read it can relieve acid reflux ( the apparent cause of Barrett's). My father passed from esophageal cancer. I stopped taking this supplement because I just didn't want to take any chances. I was also taking this supplement to possibly help with my joints as I train in Martial Arts and I'm getting up there in years. Soon to be 58. I'm not sure what to do. Maybe I'm just being paranoid. Thank you for this video.

Hi Karen another case of fear mongering due to not understanding the science. The Dr mentioned has a skincare line and I wonder how much of the original statement was about marketing? Topical HA is a humectant sitting on top of the skin drawing water. Even the smaller low molecular weight stuff isn't penetrating that far into the skin. It's not an ingredient that suits my extremely dry, rosacea and eczema prone skin and I try to severely limit the amount used. Living in Scotland we normally don't have enough humidity in the air for it to function as designed (drawing moisture from the environment) and it does dry my skin out, causing irritation in large amounts/multiple layers. The salt form mostly used in skincare sits in the top layer of the skin, so how could it get near the pancreas? I think those on social media have a certain responsibility for fact checking before perpetuating myths and bad science though. I understand your reluctance to say negative things about other content creators, but I still think they should be called out for this type of rubbish and fear mongering. Do I wish the skincare market would move on from their obsession with HA? - yes of course I do, but not due to fear mongering and really bad science. Something similar happened not that long ago with spf, which is even more irresponsible as spf is a proven cancer preventative (for skin cancer obviously). i hadn't heard of this before and hope it dies down quickly. Best wishes.

There isn't currently any evidence to suggest you should be worried at all, but that doesn't mean there won't be in the future. That's the case with everything we eat breathe and touch though, so it depends how cautious you are. The worst case scenario is that if you ever have cancer and don't know about it, particularly pancreatic, a supplement with HA may be food that increases growth but as I say, there is nothing to show that as of today. x

Am I right in assuming that it doesn't cause it when say applied to healthy skin. In the presence of for example a melanoma, it can protect it and even encourage the spreading of it? As it binds to CD44? So OK to use on already healthy skin but not really a wise idea to apply to cancerous skin?

Thanks so much Joanne ☺️ I don't know of a specific brand that avoids HA I'm afraid, it seems to be in everything nowadays. I'd say it's more about individual products and just checking the ingredients. That said, I don't like HA on my skin as it doesn't do much for it and sometimes makes it even drier, but I don't mind if there is a little bit in it. For example, you'll see in an upcoming haul I use this product - tidd.ly/3IazuA9 - it has HA in it but not much and it's fine. Hope that helps. x

What about Hyalauronic Acid Supplements causing Cancer?

    • @TheBeautyMaverick
      @TheBeautyMaverick  2 года назад +3

I talk briefly about supplements in the video as one of the studies mentioned that if you have a history of cancer, you should probably avoid them. There is currently no evidence linking supplements with cancer as like I mentioned, its the HA created by the body that is causing the issue. However, no evidence doesn't mean its not possible but it also means anything we use or ingest could cause any number of things. It depends on how cautious you want to be. Being super cautious would mean avoiding HA supplements. x

There is currently no evidence to link supplements to cancer, as its the HA produced by the body that is the issue. No evidence doesn't mean there is no link, it's just means there is no evidence. Actually, therr has never been a skin cancer except massive amojnts of Hyaluronic acid accompanied it.
It does some awkward signalling to skin cells on receptor CD44 which somehow, cuases them to go mad and divide in a cancerous way.
Dr Abs is extrmely knowledgable on all dermal cellular matters. It would be great if u made a video with him.
