Finding out I have a rare cancer at 21 // my backstory and surgery (amputation)

  • In September 2023 I was told that, at 20 years old, I have a rare malignant "cancerous" sarcoma (tumor) on the bottom of my left foot. By October 2023, I was in surgery (the day after my 21st birthday) to remove it as well as part of my foot*.
This has been a wild time for me physically, mentally, and emotionally, but I have been letting the doctors, my prayers, and the support from my loved ones lead the way. Through all the test results, being told I will be an amputee, and the physical pain that comes with that I am learning that going with the flow is always easier than not accepting it. This is my reality right now. It is just an aspect of the really exciting identity I am forming at 21 on.
subscribe to continue following this journey in my 20s with me:)
share this video in case it reaches others who are in similar situations
*I get a lot of questions about my amputation. It is called a ray amputation and removed the toes and the bones that go through the foot. You will here me say "foot" or "toes" interchangeably because it is an invasive surgery that altered the shape, size, and (a few) functions of my foot so it is much more than just losing a toe here and there. Obviously this isn't to try to exaggerate my situation, but is more to share more honestly how it has impacted me :)

I am a cancer survivor, and cancer is hard to deal with. I, too, had family and very dear friends that surrounded me in love. I was fearful that after surgery, chemo, and reconstruction, it may come back. However, i am almost 10 yrs out of diagnosis . Cancer does change how you look at things. I am so thankful for all the small things. Sending hugs and love.

I’m on my second trip dealing with cancer. Remember high blood sugar feeds cancer cells, which is different from just sugar. A good diet is so important more than you can know. Having a great support team is really important. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is don’t be afraid to ask for a second opinion or even a third. Stay on top of it. Having a team of doctors fully engaged in your treatment is so important. Take care and all my best. Pretty soon you will realize that your foot is just part of who you are and you’ll embrace it.

Hi Isabel I too liked your approach to your cancer but girl you so should have gone when you found it a lump on your foot isn't embarrassing at all in fact I discovered one on mine last week which is quite painful to walk on so I'm seeing my dr tomorrow.
I have to say you had me going as you said "I'm having my foot amputated! I was so relieved when you said that it was I believe 2 toes?
I've had both feet smashed and reconstructied and look darn ugly but I so don't care because I can now walk. Two toes is absolutely nothing, I can assure you very few people will notice and if they do you have something to talk about.

I was just like you when I was your age I didn't like making appointments of any kind. Especially doctor appointments. So I understand where you're coming from. Just know that it's not on your face or your head or your you know your chest and any other place so, hang in there you'll be in my prayers.

Wow, you took this with so much calm and acceptance! Were you not in pain when you came out of the anesthesia? Any idea what your future prognosis is? Hoping this is the end of your bout with cancer.

thank you for the kind words:) I had a nerve block for about 5 days following the anesthesia so no pain! No updates on the pathology as of now so fingers crossed the surgery means it's outta here

Youth is not a guarantee of longevity. Being old is terrifying because you think death is near, but being young and with a terminal illness is more terrifying. Once you get sick with something deadly when young, from then on, you live with fear every day for the rest of your life.

Thank goodness my condition is treatable:) it’s a test that will affect the rest of my life because it’s changed my perspective but I’m thankful I don’t have to be fearful of not living a full one

I’m confused. You said they were going to amputate your foot but it looks like your foot is still there. What did they end up doing?

@@isabelgracep a foot amputation is at ankle level, it’s not ‘interchangeable’ depending on how it affects you - thats not how it works. You had a painful surgery and it’s greatly impacted you but you didn’t lose your foot.

Sorry you had to go through this. I didn't know about this and recently watched with a family member. Otherwise I would have told you to look into radio surgery for the cancer or naturopathic doctors.

So far it doesn't look like I will need chemo 🙏 the pathology reports are still continuing to develop since it appears to be pretty rare so of course anything is possible but I am praying that this surgery will be enough!
