I fell in love with an 8mm German Mauser in 1967...7.92mmx57mm to be exact. My brother unboxed one new in the cosmoline, never issued for 29.95 plus tax shipped to the front door of our farm house...laminated stock, in new condition unissued. It was as pretty as any young woman you ever seen...and that's a fact.

Lee has 8MM dies, PPU and Starline have brass, Hornady has 8MM bullets. I've reloaded my K98 for years. Great rifles.

Dave, son beating you just means you taught him well. Beautiful rifle. Thank you for sharing.
BTW, I had questioned you before about shooting groups with the Magnoetospeed on the rifle. I took your advice and did that to save components. I shot my best group ever today using your method. 308 165 Accubond handloads with a .2 MOA group. I am ready for a disabled veteran elk hunt in WY this fall, Lord willing and the creek don't rise.

All of the 8mm mauser ammo that I have come accross is boxer primed.
      Therefore, not corrosive.
The secret is to know what you are shooting and not guess the actual caliber, etc.....

I know this thread is getting a little old, but I couldn't help but chime in. I have a sporterized BRNO 8x57 and love it. I handload as well which is essential with this cartridge, in my opinion. It will do anything my 30-06 will do from a hunting perspective but a whole lot more to talk about. Mine still has the German markings stamped into the rifle after they confiscated it in Czechoslovakia and sent it to their armory before issuing to a soldier in WWII. It is very accurate and as classic looking as you can expect. It's nice to see others still running their Mausers after all these years.

I reload 8mm Mauser, but if I want full power hunting ammo, I go with Sellier & Bellot 8X57JS. It's loaded to higher European pressures (CIP) than US ammo. The Sellier & Bellot 8MM Mauser ammo is loaded to SAAMI pressure and is pretty mild.

My suggestion if you want to hunt with this gun is to go online and order some sellier and bellot 196gr spce, and that rifle will be good even for elk. Energy will be almost identical to a 30-06 with a good 180gr load at the muzzle except the extra 16gr of bullet weight will help you carry energy!!! Pretty good elk round in that gun out to 400 yards easy if not a bit further depending onhow accurate your rifle is with it. It's about 30 a box, but it's exactly the performance you're gonna want out of a hunting round!!!

Happy Saturday, Dave and Matt. The only rifle I had with a scope for decades was a fixed 4x on a 22lr. I refused to desecrate my pre-64 Winchester 30-30 by putting a scope on it. I was a dead-eye with those buckhorn sights on a 100 yard range.

Military surplus ammo frequently has very hard primers. Had to hit many of them twice to get them to go off. A new Wolf firing pin spring took care of that.

The Hodgdon website lists 54 grains of H-4350 with a 200 grain bullet. The stated pressure is 45000 CUP. In two of my rifles, this load has a muzzle velocity between 2500 and 2560 fps with the 200 grain Accubond

next time you have a misfire, leave the bolt closed. take an 8x57 cartridge and place the case rim into the groove that's been machined into the cocking piece and pull the cocking piece back. this way you won't have to disengage the bolt from locked position. hth and great shooting, i cant get groups like that when i use that 196-grain yugo mg hardball😇👍🇺🇸

Has an adjustable trigger...its like new 35 years old....i totally fell in love now that i worked it out...8mm is really really good for open sight east coast deer gun recoil and muzzle blast is very manageable. I fell in love with it too

Clarification: From the Hornady manual a .308 Win. case, is 2.015". 8x57mm case, is 2.244". 30-06 case is 2.494". Therefore the 8mm case length is closer to the .308 Win case length.. Action length was never referenced in this video. Our comparison here and reference to the .308 Win. in this video had more to do with a felt recoil comparison. Thanks for watching and commenting here.

Around 1980, I picked up an 1915 7.92 Mauser made in Danzig, imported and sporterized by Interarms in a nice walnut Monte Carlo style stock. From day one, I had planned in mounting a scope on it, but it shot so well and naturally with the original ramped rear sight, I never mounted one. I live in the Hudson Valley/ Catskill Mountains of NY. Most of my whitetail hunting has been in forests, and the iron sites seem perfect for a "brush gun" , acquiring the target easily. A Peep Sight sounds tempting though! It should work just fine in another 100 years form great great grand kids and beyond!
