    This video covers everything I have in my pedal board. I try to explain my OC-3 Super Octave, my GE-7 Graphic EQ, my RV-5 Digital Delay and of course my RC-30 Loop Station. I have wanted to make a Boss Loop Station Review for quite some time so sorry if you have made a request and are still waiting. I will start pushing on with those as of now.
    If you would like to learn how to loop or how to set up a pedal board, hopefully, this loop pedal review and pedal board overview will help you out.

    While playing RC-30, if I'm on Track1 and I've recorded multiple layers on it + I'm in the middle of the song, I want to clear the Track1 completely using Pedals, not the small button, is it possible?
    If I'm track1, and start loop1, then over that - loop2, then over that loop3. Finally, if I press left paddle for 2 sec, it deletes loop2 and loop3 but keeps loop1 going. I want to get rid of loop1 too.
    Example - Ed playing this song ruclips.net/video/vxP8FIFH2k8/видео.html. At 3:10 (ish), he clears all the recordings in Track1 and starts another track there.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Lee! Such a helpful review and explanation. I got my RC-30 a couple of weeks ago and have enjoyed playing around with it. I had a VE-20 that was collecting dust and now I want to use the VE-20 for reverb/harmonies and the RC-30 for drums and some looping. My question is this: Are you getting a bypass signal through the RC-30 when it's not in play/record/overdub mode? I don't necessarily want to use my loop pedal on every song and I'm trying to figure out how to get my guitar and vocals to be audible when not using the loop pedal. Thanks so much, Judd

      Judd Harris Nevermind. Figured it out. The issue was using headphones instead of an amp or audio interface. 👍

    Thanks for the review. Do you have the Boss FS-5L? I thought I saw you use it in your Bloodstream Tutorial, but curious to know more about the set up with the FS5L and the RC30 Looper.

      Thanks for reaching out, Zach. I use the FS-5U as a channel select switch so that I don't have to do the silly "press and hold for 2 secs" thing. You can see it in my tutorial for Castle on the hill. I actually just got the RC-500 which is an absolute beast. It irons out so many issues I have with RC-30. Stay tuned for a review!

Thanks.

      Hey there, thanks for your comment. Yeah I can help. Start with your pedal powered OFF. You then need to press and hold the "Loop FX on/off" button as you power the pedal ON. Once you have done this, use the arrow keys to find when the display reads "LC" (this is the complex pedal mode how the RC-30 is set by default). Next, press the "Loop FX on/off" once more to save the setting. Hope this helps!

    I doubt you're still using this looper, but if you ran a single external pedal, FS-5 or even a keyboard sustain pedal that can switch polarity (to ensure it's normally open), you can switch channels back and forth. holding it does the channel select so you wouldn't have to bother clearing loops after the song (just scroll). The double tap to stop both would still work. I have one to fool around with, and being the gear geek I am, I think I'm going to open it up and see about running some leads to the channel select buttons traces and out to a simple switch that would act as a dual channel selector so I could cue both back up after stopping both with the double tap. There's probably real estate on either side panel of the looper to accomplish this :) Great video

    Great video Lee really enjoyed it. I currently use a Martin LX 1e that's the same type as Ed uses. I had a Gibson J45 but to be honest I didn't enjoy the plugged in sound. I am currently getting my nephew to look at sending me a Maton from Australia. Reason I enjoy them is for the microphone and bridge pickup blend. Can I ask your opinion on the M80 as I have a big baby Taylor that I love the sound of and want to fit one to it. Any advise. Please can you do the video of Castle on the Hill. Would love to see how you do that one. Wallace

    • @leetownsend
      @leetownsend  7 лет назад +2

      +Wallace Nock Hey Wallace!
      Glad you enjoyed the video. The amplified sound of an acoustic guitar is always going to be a constant battle as it's totally unnatural. For example, if you watch any studio recordings of people who are really particular about their sound such as Damien Rice or Richard Thompson, you'll notice that they play unplugged and use a high end microphone to pick up the guitar's sound. I have never used the M80, I have to be honest but if it's anything like the M1 active, it's a good choice. Another pickup which is worth a mention is the "Rare Earth Blend" by Fishman. This pickup includes a magnetic soundhole section and a microphone on a gooseneck bracket to try to capture a much more natural sound. I have never used one myself but check out artists like Jon Gomm and you'll hear how great it sounds. Will definitely sort out a cover of Castle on the Hill, it's a great song and I'd love to have a cover on the channel. Thanks for your support, let me know if I can help with anything else!

      Ok cool thanks Lee. I appreciate all the help. I am so into my looping and thanks to you I do an amazing version of Shape of You. Just as you taught it to me. That's why I am really keen to do castle on the hill. But how Ed gets that initial fast strumming pattern is crazy. I have also just got myself an Ableton push 2. It's really easy for in the fly loops. The only thing is to take Ableton on a laptop everywhere is a mission. I actually borrowed it from a mate so doubt I would invest in one. Really love the sound you get from your songs. And once again thanks so much for your great inspiration. 👍🏻👍🏻

    HELP PEOPLE, i want to buy rc-30 for first pedal addition and i want to be proactive and buy a voodoo lab power supply, problem is on the rc-30 it states to use "BOSS PSA ADAPTOR ONLY" is this just and idiot warning or will a voodoo lab supply not work properly???

    • @leetownsend

      Check the required voltage, amperage and polarity on the pedal and ensure that your preferred power supply can offer the same settings. It's very important that these 3 things match up, otherwise you risk damaging your pedal.

      @@leetownsend So after a bit of research, this is where im at, the PSA will basically mean regulated 9V, the power supply is voodoo lab power 2 plus which offers reg 9V, is it not highly unlikely that a top spec power supply and boss looper will not be matched for use?

    I fully agree about the boss rc 30 because say im on track to and then need to drop one then want two in straight after its really hard. Also have you thought about using a fender aby pedal to make it so you dont need to run sterio with your guitar 🎸

    • @leetownsend
      @leetownsend  4 года назад +1

      I guess the Fender pedal is like a line selector, right? Have thought about it in the past but keeping the 2 signals separate allows me to EQ them separately at the mixing desk. Using a line selector would give me less control over the overall sound.
      Going back to the RC-30, yeah it would be cool to have a feature to seamlessly jump between the 2 tracks but that's what the more expensive boards are for...

    I have not seen it mentioned in the comments, but I apologize if it was. But adding the external footswitch makes the "start all" easier because it enables a very fast track change. So, when in a "stopped all" state you only need to double tap the external footswitch to select both tracks, no press and hold for two seconds. It is not a real "start all" but it can be executed pretty quickly anyways. While I am here, I want to let you know I am a big fan of your videos, especially the loop tutorials. Thanks for all your time and work!

      Hi, thanks so much for getting in touch. I'm afraid I don't know the first thing about adding files to the RC-30 in the manner you're talking about as I solely use it for live looping. In fact, I've never connected my looper to a computer so I don't even know what is possible really. I will have a look at some point as you've got me interested but I've always put off doing it as I don't want to start using pre recorded loops so I've had no need to check it out.

    Thanks so much for this and your other vids. I have just upgraded from an RC-3 because I really wanted the 2 pedals and 2 tracks and I use two FS5's instead of the FS6. That also gives me the option to shift up and down the memories. I have a TC-Helicon Play Acoustic doing all of the FX before the RC-30 and that seems to work really well. Great vid Lee. Have you ever tried using the Banks for keeping any pre-recorded beats that you might use with a setlist? Or do you prefer re-creating the songs entirely from scratch? I play my electric into my RC-30 and don't have a way of (or am not very good at) laying down a beats loop. Some of my song Verses can be 8 bars or more and had question about if i need to start my new loop precisely at the beginning of the measure or if i can start it mid-way and then carry it over. It sucks to have to wait an entire measure to come around to lay down my rhythm part, trying to find a work-around.

    • @leetownsend
      @leetownsend  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Tim,
      Thanks so much for your comment. I don’t use the banks at all (I don’t even know how to be honest). Once you have recorded the first loop, you can start recording over it at any point. Essentially, the record button can be turned on or off during any part of the measure. If you’re worried about taking too long to get round to recording certain parts, you may be better with the RC-300 as I hear you can “de sync” the first track from the other two. Pretty much, you can record a 4 bar beat into track one and then record 12 bars into track two and track one will just play over. The only problem with this is you have to be bang on with your timing. Anyway, hope this helps in some way. Let me know if you come up with a good solution!

    Hi Lee, great video -thank you! One question; if you record a phrase on the looper then change effects does that phrase get affected by the new effects or does it play back with the original effects? I want to record a chord sequence, then play it back while playing a lead over the top but when I change to the lead effects, the chords play back with those effects too :/

    • @leetownsend
      @leetownsend  4 года назад

      HI Andy, thanks for your message. If you put your lead effects between your guitar and your looper, anything you have previously looped won't be affected by that pedal. The great thing about that if you can loop a phrase with the effect added and then play clean once that loop is added. It works both ways. Hope that makes sense...

      I still use the Sennheiser when I play live for my lead vocal. For loops I use my Shure SM58. It's not as good as the Sennheiser but I think that's better in a way as it stops the loops bleeding into each other quite so much. It can be a problem playing live that the loop microphone picks up the sound from the PA and loops it again until you get feedback. Not a good sound!

    man thanks, can you tell me please how to use the write option. In fact I can record but not write... I can go to track 1 then if I go to track 2 and come back to 1, this track is empty... thanks for you answer

      Hey Cris, sorry but I have never used the write function. I only ever live loop stuff and then I clear the channels for the next song. I don't bank loops to use again ever. Sorry I can't help.

    Lee does your mic go out of your left channel of the RC into the Rev. 👍

      +Wallace Nock As far as I know, the mic is sent as a mono signal to both the left and right outputs of the RC-30. I will double check that when I next plug my board in.
