warm winter detecting with the Manticore - Avila Beach

- It’s only 4 miles as the crow flies from Pismo Beach. But Avila Beach isn’t visible from the 101. Its peculiar geography requires a 2-mile drive from the 101 offramp thru a seemingly wrong direction, narrow, winding, wooded canyon to reach. Fwy travelers don't end up there by accident.
On a late January weekday morning, shoreline parking was plentiful and free. The sand was uncrowded and made me eager (as much a 64-year-old can be) to jump out and detect. Unfortunately, in most places it was like digging through pebble-filled sticky clay. In others loose pebbles were just large enough to NOT fall quickly through my scoop. And random aluminum shards were well-represented in the small number of detected targets. Still, breathing fresh ocean air on an uncrowded beach was better than sitting at home.
I'm a recreational detectorist, not a treasure hunter. After 40 uninterrupted years of working (retired 12/31/22), I beach metal detect for exercise, to enjoy fresh air, and to eat a monstrously unhealthy but delicious meal afterward to counteract the benefits of exercising. (see my "community" tab for pics) The possibility of finding something interesting and/or valuable in each scoop, keeps me going.
In my low-key, basic videos I'll endeavor to show my finds, in-frame, in focus, well lit, with tones included. I'll usually call out the VDI numbers & my guess what the target might be. I'll also add scenic shots so viewers can follow my progress on the beach. And there will be an organized wrap-up of finds at the end.

Nice hunt. I know you say there weren't many signals, but it seems a pleasant, relaxing hunt. Edited to say thank you for having me in your favorite channels at the end. I clicked to post the comment seconds before as you were finishing your wrap-up. That's so thoughtful! Thank you.
@MetalDetectingMermaid - Thank you & you're welcome. I know the screen says, "California," but you're still west coast of N America. 😃 / Avila Beach was esp great for free parking & almost no one around. I like to avoid people while detecting, EXCEPT for other detectorists 😛 with whom I want to compare notes.
Avila Beach is a great place to hunt in the summer. It gets very crowded with lots of depositors 👍😎
Ray, thanks for confirming my thought. There were very few people around, even in town. I guessed that a lot of the houses were bought up by Silicon Valley tech people as summer getaways. That fits with summer crowds even tho I saw only 1 hotel. 🤑😃🤑
@OLdweeb it's a college town, full of college kids in the summer
@raydigsdetecting - Quick look up: population 1,599 (2022), 3 hotels in the city and 60+ short term rental houses on the 1st site I checked. I imagine Cal Poly SLO students fill those in Summer w/more making day trips. Will keep my eye out for another possible trip there.
Good morning my friend, happy metal detecting❤
Good morning and happy metal detecting to you too! I hope you find lots of interesting relics. 😃
@@OLdweeb Thank you buddy
