OLdweeb = (OnLine dweeb) - used since 1991 for my hobbies.
I'm a recreational detectorist, not a treasure hunter. After 40 uninterrupted years of working (retired 2023), I beach metal detect for exercise, to enjoy fresh ocean air and to eat a tremendously unhealthy but delicious meal afterward. The possibility of finding something interesting and/or valuable in each scoop, keeps me going.

A 3rd "good" hunt in a row? No! 🤪Sucky Results @ a Ventura Pocket Beach
Last week I ended up at the wrong beach near Ventura Harbor. But from the far edge of that one, I figured out how to reach THIS pocket beach that I’d often seen from the other side of the harbor. Confirming later with google maps, I finally arrived here! (Accidentally drove thru a year ago but couldn't remember the route...) Another weekday, overcast & mid-60’s temperature kept beachgoers to a minimum.
After consecutive productive hunts at other beaches, I was disappointed here by the lack of good targets and the abundance of metal trash. Though this hunt was nowhere near the worst I've had, it definitely brought me back to the normal reality of beach metal detecting. Better luck next tim...

Is 68° too cold for So Californians? Detecting Empty Beaches!
Просмотров 89621 час назад
After 4 travelling videos, I made this one in Ventura, closer to home. The 68° overcast must’ve been too cold. As you saw, I had 2 beaches almost entirely to myself. No complaints here! I started detecting at noon and left for home at 4pm. I found clad coins, some bling and a dead Fitbit. I factory-reset my Manticore at the beginning of the month. Then I started finding bling, which had mostly ...

With no prior knowledge of the area, I watched YT detecting videos by: - Seek and Detect - Monterey Magnet Man They gave me good ideas about where to go and what to expect. Calif Beach Detecting - Coins in the Can Slaw, Black Sand Globulites!
Просмотров 525Месяц назад
I went to San Diego for 3 weekdays to escape the 110°-118° temperatures at home. My hotel has a 4pm check-in so I detected a nearby beach where my vehicle (that contained my luggage & electronics) could remain in sight. The location wasn’t ideal for detecting because of wind, black iron sand and lots of trash, particularly aluminum can slaw (globulites). Still, I enjoyed the fresh air & surpris...
Scary Manticore Find -&- A Bonus Beach Bunny
Просмотров 359Месяц назад
I'm in Ventura with my Minelab Manticore to detect the north side of the pier. I immediately found a scary item under the kids' swings. I'd left my phone in the car. So, I had to walk all the way back to get it. On the return I was sidelined by a bike rider with lots of metal detecting questions. When I got back to the swings a family arrived just behind me. The parents gave me the evil eye. In...
Calif Beach Detecting - beach bunnies ?

The news showed Ventura Pier reopening after being closed for 18 months due to storm damage. Knowing that this would draw more people there to “deposit” things in the surrounding sand, especially on weekends, I visited on Monday. An assortment of interesting items was detected. An actual beach bunny was sighted at the end of my visit and appears just before the wrap-up.

Detecting (oft seen on RUclips) Mission Bay (San Diego) beaches in mid-July (weekdays), I was surprised to see no other detectorists or even vacation crowds. This left me free to detect without distractions or interruptions. I mostly skipped sticky muddy areas to avoid being banned by my hotel for tracking-in mud. Happily, the dry sand areas contained many non-trash targets. The coins (all clad...

Detecting on a quiet beach in San Diego Bay, I found a high percentage of pull tabs & beaver tails, but also a good assortment fun "stuff." There was evidence of European visitors and (rare for me) silver! After 4 hours, I then drove a short distance to the end of the last US beach street, within sight of Mexico.
Calif Beach Detecting - summer begins!

After 2-1/2 months, I was finally given the medical OK for unrestricted walking. I went back to the scene of my knee-breaking detecting injury for a short trial-run hunt with my Manticore. Calif Beach Detecting - Ventura State Beach (CA)
Hi Ken, this is a fun beach in the summer. There's a lot of guys hunting here now so you have to be discrete about your locations or they will really be overwhelmed with detectorists. Then none of these beaches will be worth detecting
Hi Ray. Tnx for watching! With 60 subscribers, low-key videos & never finding gold, I don’t think I’m going to cause a new horde of experienced-capable detectorists to overrun the public beaches that I detect. Anyone like that already uses google earth to scout new sites. Maybe the only help I'm adding is noting "free parking." Of course, I won’t post any detecting sites that are repeatedly productive for me (so far 2 of those, but still no gold), or any that are revealed to me in confidence. 😃
Oh man this video brought back nightmares from hunting that spot, clams everywhere, never really found anything of interest......Maybe in the drysand, but the ground balance readout is super high. A nice PI metal detector should do the job, great video always love the beach videos
Thanks James! I hunted on a Monday morning after a warm weekend. No one else was detecting so I got a lot of fresh drops, especially bling. You're right, the dry was a lot easier on my Manticore.
The harbor beach is good to hunt during the summer, so is the pocket beach. I was just in ventura last week...lol! The signal you couldn't find under the swings is old swing equipment. Nice vid 👍
Hi Ray! Now I remember, there's an undiggable long target (maybe a chain or cable) buried on the seaward side of the baby swings too. It's weird. There are also cut/exposed ends of random coax cables sticking out of the sand on the S side of the pier. 😯
I parked in the wrong lot (Surfers Knoll) and walked onto the wrong beach. It was too sanded-in, as expected. But I got that ring. Now I know for sure how to reach the adjoining pocket beach next time.
@@OLdweeb remember the large part of the harbor beach is reclaimed sand from dredging
Thanks for the info. I dimly remember a lot of excavation work around Ventura/Oxnard harbors. But at 40 miles from home, I wasn't paying close attention at the time.
Love your explanations on all your finds……perfect!
Thank you! Guessing the target is a major part of the fun for me. 🤪
Saw the click bait and immediately reminded me of some clam diggers while I was on the wet sand detecting and one of them in all earnest ask if I can detect clams thinking I was using the sand scoop to dig clams. I politely said no and explained it’s only for metals. We then had a nice 5-10 minute discussion on metal detecting and clam digging.
As far as clickbait - I think this one's very low level. 🤪 I soooo wanted to be confronted for using a 'clam detector' without a license. But all the locals were friendly. (Note - @ 5:26 I DO 'rescue' a pismo clam)
@@OLdweeb sure the little critter was happy as a clam 😁. Nice vedio by the way. I’m a bit south here in Oxnard and primarily hit just local beaches.
Nice find. I've found them down here a well. They are especially scary when they are locked open and covered in rust.
@GoldDiggerBarbie - I have them scattered all over the house now. There's usually one within reach to open packages or to do random cutting. / None found locked open (yet). But found a rusty steak knife.
@@OLdweeb lol. I'll have to show you my favorite serving spoon!
Nice job! And spendable money to boot! Digger Julie and I were just talking about heading up to Pismo Beach, or at least a beach in the area. We love Bling! ❤ Nice to be aware of the Clam Snobs ahead of time. You should try my foot sweep technique in that mudsand. 😊😅
Thanks! From L.A., my usual away-from-home detecting trips are to Monterey & San Diego. Pismo was new. 1/2 the miles to Monterey & 1/3 the hotel price. Met no clam snobs, (unfortunately). 🤪 The resulting video could've gone viral. 😃
Good Video
Thank you! I had fun making it. 😄
Hey my friend, Pismo Beach is always one of my favorites. Fun vid 👍😎 lots of cool targets. ruclips.net/video/LWNw8aRCRMA/видео.htmlsi=LNINsnAC3_zLmx4A
I just watched your 2021 video. You had a good haul! It looks like Pismo Beach is a hot spot for digging bling. I saved the N side of the pier for my next trip. 😃
@OLdweeb the bluffs on the north end is a hit spot. There's a stairway that the residents use to get down to the beach and sun. 4 gold in 1 day. I've been there a bunch of times, I deleted lots of those vids...
@@raydigsdetecting - Thanks! I remember those stairs from a 5 minute visit to find a geocache 10 years ago, driving back from Monterey. Definitely going on my next Pismo visit. 🙂
Nice hunt, I’ve never been to OB. Glad you showed us.
It's an interesting area. If I wasn't so obsessed with metal detecting, I'd wander around looking at all the stores, restaurants & people. 😀
👍👍👍
Thank you for watching!
Good find 👍😎
Tnx Ray. Fun stuff!
Looked like plenty of good exercise, wish I lived closer to those beaches so I could hit them, because I could sure use the exercise. I had an uncle that called those landmines yard pickles, you had to watch your step at his house. LOL
The owners are good about pickup up deposits when their dogs are close by. But it's an off-leash beach and dogs can wander hundreds of feet away to do their business, often while the owners aren't watching. Great exercise walking the human section. Interesting neighborhood too. 😃
That sure is a long pier. Targets are going to be thin now. Nice vid 👍😎
Yeah, it's the longest pier I've ever seen. But it's 58 years old & so heavily storm-damaged that it's going to be torn down & replaced. 😯
Hello, where did you buy your otter box for your manticore?TY
On the bay-of-E. The cellar is 'The Ultimate Finds Box.' Sorry for the weird spellings. Otherwise this would be blok 'ed out. Good Luck.
Fiesta Island……former trash dump…..
I'm a former local. As far as I know the "island" was formed by the sand dredged & deposited to create Mission Bay. There was industrial dumping before my time, not trash, outside the SE fringe of the bay. It's still undeveloped (probably contaminated) there, brush-filled & in recent years populated by the homeless. 😵💫
Very cool finds. Nice vid 👍😎
Thank you, Ray. Had a very good variety of stuff, tho no jewelry. Except for a few clad coins, I get skunked on my next video, at Ocean Beach.
The Marine Corps Toys for Tots coin was a nice find. At first, I thought it might have been an early Marine Corps Challenge coin or something. I don't know much about them; it wasn't a thing when I was in the Corps stationed on Camp Pendleton during the mid to late 80's. You detect like I would likely at my age now and the exercise would be great. Sand scoop detecting would likely be all I could do now with a bad lower back and shoulder, had to give up dirt detecting a year ago because of it and it drives me crazy. Living in the dead center of the Country in Missouri makes beach detecting a little tuff though. I've considered the 24 hour drive to SoCal for a week or two of vacation though. Oh, and why would someone with an aggressive dog think it's ok to take it to the beach!?
I saw "Toys for Tots," back at the hotel in good lighting. Sand scooping is what I like, especially washing water thru to see the find. Stomping a shovel is probably a permanent no-go w/my newly healed knee. The dog was a dalmatian. Annoying but taken out with one swipe of my scoop if it'd gotten loose. The owner was scarier!
@@OLdweeb I know what you mean, some people have no care for anyone else whatsoever.
Cool hunt and cool items. Your knife is much nicer than my rusty find. Let’s go make more videos!
Tnx, Oscar! Finding a Leatherman is a bucket list item for me. That Gerber knife is the closest so far. The next hunt (Ocean Beach) was really bad with only a few clad coins - video nxt week. 😵💫
Looks nice out there! Happy hunting !
Thank you. It was good detecting weather! 😃
Gotta keep an eye on your car in calif. Car burglary is no longer a crime
Oh, it's still a crime. The problem is that for low $ value offenses, the consequences are usually trivial. / Where I was didn't look like a bad area. But having my vehicle broken into & losing my laptop would've ruined my mini vacation. 😵💫
i hate that word globulites reminds me of that fake metal detectorist fun with jim.
@scottp7587 - I think he's very entertaining. He says, "BLOB-EE-RITE." In Dweebian dialect, it's "GLOB-YOO-LITE." I know that it's those partying sea lions that burn their used beer cans. 🤪
Hate to say it but, what you described as black sand early in the video looked more like Tijuana River sludge the way it dissipated in the water. I like that you search areas that most wouldn't think to, you never know how hot of an area that may have been in the past. During WWII those areas could have been popular with troops getting ready to ship out. I was a Marine and spent as much free time I could at the beaches around Pendleton, though that was in the 80's.
Hey Tommy: My Manticore beeped like crazy on every swing at default sensitivity 20. Turning it to 18 reduced that to mostly usable levels. Extreme black areas needed 16 or even 15 to quiet the beeps. It's weird how the black sand looks gray as it washes away. I’ll bring a magnet next time to verify if it's iron. The TJ outflow is 10+miles S and the current goes from N to S. So, I HOPE the contaminants aren’t being deposited where I detected. 😮
@OLdweeb just hose yourself and your equipment down before touching your face, you'll be ok. 😊 My new microphone is arriving today! 🎉 That Mantacore seems to be a great machine. I'm pleased to see it detects Globulite and MUO's also! (Metals of Unknown Origin). 😅😂
@@GoldDiggerBarbie - I'm a big hoser! 😆
You always go to awesome places, I’m jealous. Nice video.
Thank you, Oscar. I go to uncrowded beaches. Good scenery but mostly clad coins and some odds & ends, with very little silver or gold. 🤪 I'm a recreational detectorist, not a treasure hunter.
Keep having fun, Brother 👍😎 IT will keep you young...
Will do! Though I'm huffing & puffing, I'm having great fun chasing whatever might be in the next scoop! 😛 (Next video: I found some good stuff.)
@OLdweeb always the anticipation of a great treasure. That's what keeps us going...we're hooked 🙄

nice old chucky cheeses token!! :)
@corythetreasurehunter9638 - At the local Chuck E. Cheese in the early 1980's there was a leftover 1960's hippie who hung around inside and sold us the tokens, 10 for $1. 😃
As far as who would have a pocket knife in the kids area..... a dad. I carry a pocket knife with me everywhere so if a dad had his knife in his pocket and sat down to play with his kids it could have fallen out and been lost in the sand.
I want to belt-carry my Leatherman Skeletool (includes a small blade) everywhere. But the world being what it is, it'd cause more problems than it's worth. But I DO have it in a zippered compartment in my hobby day pack. It's been great for minor equipment adjustments & repairs.
Would be nice to know what numbers come on your machine not your GUESSES !
Same response as the last time you left that comment: The tones, always. My guess what the target is, most of the time. VDI numbers, they're often visible. But I only call them out sometimes because they won't match the scale used by anyone with a (non-Minelab) or (pre-2023 model Minelab) detector.
Nice video. Better than me mine. It’s cool to see other areas with your videos also. I’ll have to go up there soon. Keep up the good work. I like the videos.
Thanks, Oscar. I'm too impatient to learn how to do nice graphics & audio effects. So, I just show a clip of almost every dig. 😃
Punks carry them...
That makes sense, Ray! I flushed out the sand & oiled the pivot. The knife easily flicks open & locks one-handed with the snap of the wrist. 😮
@OLdweeb I've found so many knives there and Santa Monica. Usually it's the homeless who carry them.
I'm Ventura, born and raised... the beaches are no longer safe after dark anymore....
I believe you! A couple of times in the winter I detected to sundown. 'Zombies' starting trickling onto the previously deserted beach. I'm sure they leave a mess. The city/state do a good job of cleaning the trash off the sand.
nice knife! protect yourself from those attack bunnies🤣
Tnx. It cleaned up nicely with LPS-1 sprayed into the pivot. I'm more worried about those grimy ground squirrels. 🐿
Great to see you out there hunting the beach 👍😎
I always keep an eye out for you. 😜
@@OLdweeb I almost went out there on the overcast day. It would've been fun
It’s amazing what you find a kids play areas. Really is scary.
On past visits I found an expensive laser pointer, needle nose pliers & big bling. Only steps off the walkway/bike-path, I picture 20-somethings swinging away here after dark and dropping this stuff.
👍 good job
Tnx, Ray!👍
Not too bad for just a couple of hours and getting some fresh air and exercise.
Yes. That's the main thing for me now in retirement. But with each scoop I still hope for precious metals. It happens, but not too often. I need to detect in the water more.🤪
@@OLdweeb I figured you were slowly easing back into it after that knee injury. I know I can't do any of those 8-hour searches I see the younger guys doing, age and injuries have caught up to me!
I enjoy your videos, very relaxing. Enjoy the coolness of the beach.
Thanks for watching, Oscar! Getting views & subs is proving to be tough. Will keep at it... Am looking forward to your next video. 😀
I understand why you worry about the crack heads out on those beaches, I would be the same way but, those headphones let you hear small bleeps that turn out to be good targets that you wouldn't have heard otherwise. Wish I was out that way to buddy search with you, that makes them less bold on attacking and taking equipment. I've always been mostly a loner searcher though, so I understand. I was detecting a really old park back in the early 90's one time and was oblivious to what was happening around me. It was August and I had no idea it was Emancipation Day and that I was about to get ran out and or attacked! I'm glad I looked up when I did and got out of there, some guys were starting to move my way, I guess I just sensed it. I don't like to not be able to do things by myself, it's just the way I am. I hope those zombies never give you any issues!
Tnx Tommy. True nut cases are unavoidable. There were multiple (different perps) daylight attacks on beachgoers at Santa Monica this month. I do my best to pick out anyone looking my way who might come over, ask to see what I've found and then ask to 'try out' my detector. Because of them and traffic/parking I've avoided L.A. County beaches. But, for video variety, I'm going to carefully go there now that I have CA State & L.A. County senior parking passes.
@@OLdweeb I understand your worries, and it's only smart to have those worries. Before when I was younger, I felt nearly invincible as a Marine when those times came to pass, not so much at 57.
Nice scenic outing in that part of the beach. You're right it's better than sitting at home 👍😎
Hi Ray! Soon, a right turn at the water & out to where the RV's park.😃
@OLdweeb I know a spot that you'll like. I'll have to email you later. One of my favorite spots. But don't give the name up
Thanks, Ray. I absolutely won't give out or show anyplace you don't want publicized. 😶
Would be nice to know what numbers come up on your target???

Congrats on all your finds! Good trip!
It was an especially productive day. Tnx for watching!
Really great hunt Ken! Wish we could have metal up while you were in the area, but maybe next time 🤙 that Afghani pendant is quite the find.
I want to detect SD a few more times by year's end. We'll connect and have a fun beach hunt! E-mailed my info to your YT addr. / That pendant HAD TO BE found during the 5 min that a woman (who climbed out from behind a chain link barrier) was telling me that she once found a gold class ring right where I was searching. I was distracted trying to decide if she was homeless or just a roughly dressed character and didn't pay attention to a couple of 'coins' that I dug then.
