I live in Los Angeles, and this movie's soundtrack perfectly captures the character (or lack of it, at times) of the City of Angels. Good movie, and terrific music.
So funny you say that. In their intro to this film on TCM Ben Mankiewicz and Eddie Muller point out exactly that, "perfectly captures the character (or lack of it, at times) of the City of Angels" as photographed by Robby Muller, the film's cinematographer (no relation). Good call!
If there was ever a soundtrack that fully invited life in the 80s especially in LA this was that., what an experience you could actually say this applied to any big city during those years especially late at night
@@davidhawley3337 Slow down, you are catching up too fast! How can you tell that you are getting old? You get up at 3AM and stand over the bowl to go wee wee, one hand leaning on the wall, night light glowing dimly. You realize even though you are half asleep that you have not heard any splashdown for the last 30 seconds. Then it occurs to you that your right sock is warm and soaking wet. Sux getting old!
This is my second favorite soundtrack right after Blade Runner. Immensely exciting and beautiful music. I think it was the best thing in Wang Chung's career, and I wish they would have done or would do more soundtracks. Film seems to be their best muse! (William Friedkin knew good music when he heard it - "Wait" - and tapped them to do songs for his film!)
2 of my all time favorite movies and soundtracks. I grew up in LA and have been to so many of those locations. I used to cruise in my Ferrari 308GTS in the 80's listening to the Live and Die in LA tape. Rick Masters drove the black 308. When they filmed the chase scene in the Airport, a friend who worked there said that airport officials told the film crew that they could not have actors running on the mobile walkway walls. They did it anyway. And the soundtrack to Blade Runner #1 sometimes runs through my head while I'm sleeping. Such great movies!
While I agree that this film score is beyond amazing, you can't beat Points on the Curve and Mosaic :) Their newer stuff is great too - if you haven't checked it out, please do! :)
This is one of most Thrilling Sound Tracks of All Time Totally Capturing Every Moment In Time, A Thrilling Ride That Takes You In Another World, A Dimension, Never Seen Anything Like It Ever, The Movie Was A Hit, But Soundtrack Was Incredible!!!…. Most Love, Donna Phoenix 🌴🌴💕🏝️😍😎👋 Donna
@@chriskobin5367 Well, I don't want to spoil it^^. But I remember I was like "wow, finally someone dares to do that in a movie" and it really surprised me the first time I saw it:).
@@chriskobin5367 Hm, it's sad to know they were already this scared in the 80s. I'd love a movie for instance in which we see some main character built up, only to be casually killed half way through the movie and have some background character step into the spotlight. But few directors dare to do that or are allowed to. That's why I like David Lynch's work and his amazing job he did on TP, The Return.

Anytime you have a character with a name like Chance, he is pursuing something unattainable without recognizing the hazards. Still shocked at his demise to this day.
His character, though, was kind of a reckless jerk, so he kinda had it coming. I think the screenwriter should have made him a bit more likable, but then his death at the end would have been all the more unacceptable and shocking to audiences.
i didn't see that end coming with his partner. The actor partner and willem dafoe were together in a brief scene in 'the hunger' while susan sarandon was inside one of those ancient contraptions.
I arrived into the 80's with a bag full of cash, fresh from assignments in the Middle East. I was born in LA and returned to California, bought a Ferrari in Newport Beach, and cruised everywhere in it. This was my favorite sound track and I played it often in the car. The 80's were good times. Iran was counterfeiting US $100 bills back then using presses that were retired from the US Mints. I got a few in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on a stopover back in the 80's. Maybe they weren't as good as the ones Ric Masters printed.
"You want bread? Fuck a baker." .................... THE most underrated film of the 1980s and beyond. Car chase out-Bullitts Bullitt. 4 stars, son. Walked along with her for a minute or two in the Village in 1986 or 1987.... The only action hero to be killed-off matter-of-factly AND YET BROUGHT BACK ALIVE in the end credits.
A timeless classic.. song & movie.. I cannot get enough of To Live & Die in L.A.
Eddie Murphy came out with Beverly hill cop at the same time and Billy's film bombed what a fuckin shame brilliant soundtrack
Billy was trying to get a series of this movie off the ground till the day he died he loved this film

Cheesey but God you could get away with so much! A few grainy photos you could deny or someone's vague memory of a crazy night. That's all gone!
