      The horrors of content moderation are not exactly a secret anymore. So many international publications have done stories on them, whether it's about that big content moderation center in Berlin where people from many nationalities come together to look at the worst shit posted in their respective countries or in the Philippines where much of the worst stuff is outsourced to people who have to choose between having food on the table or having their trust in humanity be destroyed for life, and there have been stories about content moderation centers in the US. All the information is out there. Why would these assholes fire her?

It's basically mental torture that those have this job have to endure because it's their bread and butter. The pay is actually good, more than the above average. But aiming for that bigger pay at what cost? Right? The nature of the job is fucked up but we can't deny that their work is a necessity at this generation.

    This is really interesting. Surfing social media is a lot like driving a car ... you can travel and explore wholesome places or you can go to dark devious places that reflect the underbelly of society. I use a lot of social media but because I watch Tech channels, digital and traditional art, travel, archeology, space exploration, science, News channels, documentaries ... then the algorithms serve up mostly educational channels or those related to these topics. So the worst I've seen on Social Media is a few 'gossip' channels or dumb show off stuff where people jump into pools from their rooftops. So my impression was that humans can sometimes be stupidly dumb ... but I had no idea that people could be so brain dead as to post the kind of garbage that your guest described having to screen. This is a real eye opener.

I search and charge their phone every night (or else they would be up all night on it) and the worst they have is a Discord for games and watches RUclips but we share the account so I know what's up. I've told him there's terrible things on those things that are very adult and could really mess up their minds. They also call me a Boomer cause I use FB lol

    • @fiorellino
      @fiorellino 3 года назад +2

      Well, social media platforms are global and each company has the same policy throughout all countries. Law enforcement is not global, each country manages it's own, there are different laws. Who investigates a video made by a tourist in USA that is not an american citizen? How fast can their nationality be determined so their country can deal with them?
      Also, law enforcement does not have the same budget as a multimillion dollar company. Very few countries can afford an AI that blocks these videos or flags them.
      Some videos are not illegal, like misoginy, sexism, they're just wrong. What would happen to those?

    so important to hear from people like this brave woman. I could not agree with her more about the negligence of parents letting their young children on social media, or just being totally disconnected from their online lives. The things teenagers get into on social media is truly horrific, and it won't end well for anyone once this generation grows up. I've seen teens spending their days "hunting/bullying/baiting pedos" as they call it, while associating themselves with dangerous and/or emotionally unstable adults just because those adults also participate in seeking out people they decide are pedophiles, whether they actually are or not. Needless to say, these teens end up groomed and abused numerous times, but because most of them were already CSA survivors who weren't given proper help to recover and heal, it's completely impossible to convince them to stop and distance themselves from these groups. They're wasting their youth retraumatizing themselves and putting ever more minors in danger with their actions, all because predatory adults encourage them to obsess over their desire for revenge.
    And I've seen teens get radicalized into terrible ideology that's been purposefully watered down and disguised as progressive, leading them to distrust the advice and knowledge of therapists and psychologists. They form mobs of literal hundreds in order to dogpile anyone who disagrees with these ideologies, spamming them with threats, suicide baiting, and gore videos, all over petty fandom drama. And their victims are almost always marginalized people and survivors of all kinds of abuse. There's no more nuance or middle-ground, everything is stark black and white and the scariest part is that these kids will swear the sky is green and grass is blue.
