FR. Its so upsetting. This is why people who make autistic characters need to learn about subtext bc all good media portraying autistic characters is ones where the character wasnt made with autism in mind, or characters made by actual autistic people

@Pumpkin.Crowz_ 100% agree. This made me think - It is wild how they act like all autistic people are a monolith....when I pick up on subtext and have better critical thinking skills, than the vast majority of my family.

To be sure, I've known plenty of prejudiced and cognitively-rigid autistic people, but I've also known plenty of autistic people who were infinitely more "woke," sensitive, and thoughtful than a lot of NTs, to the point of often being resented by said NTs.
What really stands out as unrealistic in retrospect is that Bones is a *woman* who has seemingly managed to get away with making these kinds of extremely-inappropriate comments throughout her life, because most of the autistic and ADHD AFABs I've known have been absolutely *pummeled* for less.

Unfortunately, Bones was one of my comfort shows as a tween… Arastoo (AIR-uh-stoo) ends up becoming a great character! He is revealed to be American, and faked his accent so his religiosity would be taken more seriously (which is a… unique… plot point). He was easily the first Asian-American / Muslim / Brown character I saw be *both smart AND cool.* He ends up marrying their gorgeous boss, Cam, in one of the very few mixed TV relationships that doesn’t include a white person. I just love seeing POC taken seriously as romantic figures!
At the end of the day, Bones was a mid-2000s show made by h0rny nerds. While we continue to reflect on the layers of prejudice the writers injected, I still appreciate Bones’s progressive arcs that are bolder and lengthier than most procedurals will consider.

He just made a natural assumption based of the time (usually people are straight and those that weren't kept it low key) and made a brief comment of how cool "Rocky" is for a name. Then she jumped straight to rudely correcting him and making off handed and reductive islamaphobic comments, assuming that he is being homophobic without giving him a chance. Since they do work on stuff that requires cleaning and keeping sterile, there’s also a chance there’s some kind of locker/shower room?

You have to disconnect in a way in order to do your job. Smokers. I'm an atheist too; but seriously lady, relax!
This is part of my personal bias, but I always *hated* that most of my jobs would allow our coworkers who smoked to go out and take multiple smoke breaks every day, but would tell me I can't just go sit in silence in the back office for the same amount of time. Same folks would likely be against Muslims doing their prayers, or folks who needed to make a personal call. The weird privilege that a "smoke break" allowed some folks was so frustrating! As somebody who used to watch Bones religiously (I didn't actually care about it, I was just desperate to fill the David Boreanaz-shaped void in my heart following the series finale of "Angel") and also watched Family Guy at the time, I am 1000% convinced that the only reason Stewie was Booth's hallucination is because in the Family Guy christmas episode where Stewie and Brian go to the north pole to meet Santa, David Boreanaz (the real human man, not an animated version) shows up to give them directions- it's a joke about "the Aurora Boreanaz"- and that introduced this weird idea that it's normal for him to talk to Stewie.
Because if I had seen that episode of Bones without having first seen that episode of Family Guy, I would've been super confused, but for some reason, the FG thing just made me go "yeah, no, that makes perfect sense, actually. Also, taking care of yourself is the why the airplane safety talk about the putting your mask on first before helping someone else. If you don't you won't be necessarily be able to help them because you are incapacitated. Always a good reminder, so thank you.

The lack of oxygen is crazy. Evolution didn't prepare you for that, and there are zero ways for you to feel it. Always help yourself first with the mask.
If you ever watch training videos, it takes so little time before the instructors say "if you don't put on a mask right now you will die". (At 10k the "useful" time is about 10 seconds, and then you're done).
And people fail to follow the instructions at this point, even when they know they will die and putting the mask on is the thing practiced here.
Take care of yourself. Then help others.

It's usually the good ole boy cops or already annoying people she comes across who express any backwards ideas. She simply cares about seeing people's lives being dignified and tries to restore that for the victims she helps.
There was a really interesting case about someone who was intersex because they had an extra sex chromosome. It made the ID based on skeletal remains and forensics more challenging. But they never played off this person's life as a joke.

I think the misgendering/wrong pronouns thing was supposed to be the writers trying to make the character of Arastoo look like a silly little guy who calls everyone mister or miss even a band. At that time ( 2009) the band was called Antony and the Johnsons, and the frontwoman of the band admittedly had not made any pronoun preference known to the media. She also didn't changed her name to Anhoni until several years after this episode aired, and the name of the band didn't change until they got back together last year. So silly little guy Arastoo called them "Mister Antony and the Johnsons" simply because it was silly to do such a thing to a band name. The writers were only using information known to the general public at the time of writing the episode. If the episode came out this year and he said that, then there's a very clear issue to be taken.

Almost every mortician and funeral director had as bad a sense of humor or worse than what we see from the cast of Bones. The ones that didn't were some of the creepiest people you'd ever meet. Working with the dead changes you. It's such an innately traumatic line of work that you develop coping mechanisms that seem ghastly by normal standards. So as that person who "Read the Books"
This is NOT true to Temperance Brennans character. She is a middle-aged divorced mother of a college student who works in both Canada and The US consulting on forensic cases. She is also a proffesor at a university on her subject. She is loosely Christian, and pretense much onky prays when shes in a life or death situation.
Temperance feels the loss of each victim very, very personally. ESPECIALLY children and women. She greives them and atteneds their burial and funeral services whenever she can. She would never be so cold or standoffish as she is in the TV.
Now, I'm waiting to read 206 Bones, but so far she doesn't comment on the LGBTQ+ community or Islamic faith whatsoever as I've seen. There's a cult mystery in one novel, but that wasn't tied to any denomination. Temperance cares more about the fact that people deserve to feel safe and protected, to the point where se helps a US state and a Canadian province to seek justice for those whove had their safety stolen.
Each character depiction is its own, but I HATE how they're not the same.

As someone who has lived in two different Arab countries and also has taught the English language for a number of years: the crew thinking Arastoo would be defensive about his religion and him being preachy is quite a normal thought. Is it right to expect those things? I guess it all depends on what type of religious people you've been exposed to. A number of zealous religious people tend to be defensive and preachy regardless of the religion they ascribe to. On the idea of him not actually listening to those songs and those songs being what the creators of the show might listen to... I have to say... the most accessible and effective way for people to learn a language is through their entertainment, so movies, shows, and music were the most popular for decades and decades. Now we can add podcasts and audiobooks and such to the list, but let me say, the people I know that learned English through rap and hip hop have a much better understanding of the nuisances of the language ( idioms, words with more than one meaning, more informal speech in general, etc.) So yes, I really do think Arastoo would be listening to this array of music, absolutely, and not only would he be listening but studying the lyrics closely and really trying to learn from it. Not only is he someone trying to learn a different language but he's also a scientist.

Episode three opens with two privileged private high school girls walking to a soup kitchen for community service because it’ll look good for their college applications. Well they’re cutting under this overpass and they see the lower half of a man who appears to be stuck from the waist up and trying to get out based on his legs kicking. They pull him out only to find his upper body has been eaten by ferrets (who have then moved down to his legs and were encased by his pants explaining the kicking) and one of the girls, who had been complaining the entire time, turns to the other and says “you’re right, this is going to look great on a college essay.” Chef’s kiss

Willie, thank you for calling out the mustache. I went back and forth like five times, thinking I'd had a stroke or something.

Im sure at least a few other people have also pointed this out but the real life high school pregnancy pact was not a pact! and then according to the most trusted source on the internet, wikipedia. all of the girls involved got pregnant independently of each other and were lumped together into a dumb pact by the principal (who also accused one of the teenage girls of sleeping with an older homeless man to get pregnant??? which is so weird?????) and then some news sources/parents got that information and went nuts about it. Some of the girls did come together to support each other through school and raising of their children since their community obviously wasnt giving that to them?

yes the only packte that existed, if you want to call it that, was for the girls to support each other after they got pregnant / when they found out. And that was a pretty good thing and mature. But of course we can't have that when it comes to teenage girls, can't we?

To be fair to the writing (even though I'm not sure it's earned this kindness), planning to get a dog doesn't necessarily indicate someone is thinking of the future because it could have been something she was contemplating doing on a whim, which would show she wasn't thinking of the actual logistics and responsibilities involved if she followed through. Similar to those girls getting pregnant and that boy being their sperm donor without actually thinking through the real future burdens that having a child brings.

I had a huge realization while watching this video, and it made me realize feelings I had repressed for years. I don't know why, but I swear, something about Willie is so truly comforting to me.

I grew up in the DMV area and you are 100000% correct about the bizarre portrayal of Bones being totally scandalized by the presence of a Muslim person. Whoever wrote this crap was not at all familiar with DC, which is a major international melting pot.

Is it just me or did they accidentally make Arastoo kinda GNC or queer-coded?
Like they tried so hard to make him non-threatening that they ended up writing a character who transgresses a lot of our society's Big Tough Man gender norms.
A soft-spoken and emotionally expressive guy who spontaneously shares his breakup playlist with the nearest queer person is wonderful, but we don't live in a world that properly respects that kind of softness in men.
It would take guts to be a guy like Arastoo IRL. (especially when also dealing with racism/islamiphobia!)

I believe the very point of the mix tape was also to play into the "you expected this based on his background, but you were wrong". So it very purposely was that kind of music. But also, I can imagine him being like "oh hey, what from my CDs would a sad American like"

Loved the video! I watched the series on and off as a kid and do not remember it being as unhinged as it so clearly is. Love watching this series and being reminded of the absolutely unhinged things that were said/done on the show
