- In this weeks video we complete the Getting the Best From: Rodinal series by actually making this venerable developer. I use a formula by the late Pat Gainer called EZ Rodinal. It’s close to the original Rodinal formula but simplified for mixing.
I buy my P-aminophenol base from Fototechnik Suvatlar, email fotosuvatlar@live.de in Hamburg. In the USA I think you can purchase it from the Photographers Formulary in Montana.

This series has been wonderful. I've used Rodinal for a few years and still found plenty here. Thank you.
Thanks!
Are you in the US?
The only suggestion I would make: use a plate with a magnetic stir bar. It really keeps stirring messes at bay.
Thanks John, another great video.
Cheers, Andrew!
Thank you so much for this series of videos, I figured I would give it a go and see. I have my first roll of 120 sitting in a 1:200 dilution right now, so hopefully in the next 15 minutes or so I'll be able to see how this developer works out. Your videos are amazingly easy to follow and extremely helpful for those of us that are new to the home development game.
Hope your negs turned out well?
Thanks mr finch
Very nice and useful🙏🙏
Thank you, Homayoon
Thank you. i really love rodinal i already made my own parodinal with tablets years ago and i kept using it more often than the original rodinal. just because paracetamol is always cheap available and i have plenty of chemicals in stock. maybe i will never run out of developing agents for the rest of my life with this formula ;)
I make Parodinal too, with paracetamol and sodium hydroxide from the drug shop. Very cheap and very good.
Awesome!
I use Paracetamol tabs.
So interesting, thank you!
Thank you for another excellent video on home mixed developers. Could you please specify exactly which developer substance you are using? p-aminophenol (para-aminophenol, 4-aminophenol) has CAS No. 123-30-8. However the label on your bottle (at 05:47) shows "CAS 591-27-5", which is m-aminophenol (meta-aminophenol, 3-aminophenol).
I think it must be mis-labelled. I will contact the supplier. Thank you!
Any test conducted on this formulation?
I just started making my own Rodinal and could not believe when it worked. Thank you for this series and all your videos I learned a lot.
I also wanted to ask you If you could make a video on how to use a printing easel. I just got a double bladed one and could not find any good beginners information on how to properly use one. Thanks again John!
Thanks for your comment. Good idea about the easel. I've added it to my video list.
I have been making Rodinal with paracetamol tablets for some time, but since you introduced me to FX55 I use that pretty much exclusively now.
Crawley's FX55 is a great developer, more modern and gives terrific prints. Keep using it :)
Excellent.
Thanks for this. I've made Rodinal with the tablet method before, but I'm going to give this one a try next!
Go for it.
Hi John. Very interesting video. In fact, I have tried the formula with very good results. Have you used this formula for paper copies? If so, what would be the appropriate solution? Greetings and thank you very much.
I have not used it for paper.
@@PictorialPlanet Thank you very much for answering. I thought that because it is an old formula, in the past they also used it for paper. With another solution of course.
Thank you for sharing this.
Cheers!
Excellent and extremely informative! Thank you.
Cheers, Ian!
hello. I am from Chile, and I would like to know if you have used the developer fx-39?
I have used FX37 which is thought to be similar.
Great video. Adox Rodinal is quite expensive in China, when comparing the price in Germany.
Wow! I bet you can buy the chemicals to make it there.
As far as I know, it is too difficult to buy P-aminophenol (base) in Beijing, and the price of Adox Rodinal (500ml) in USA is just 12 bucks.
What a shame.
Hello and thank you for the video; might I ask, Have you tried stand or semi-stand development with this recipe? and I did not quite understand what you meant by "getting 64-80 ISO from FP4" would appreciate if you could elaborate.
This recipe will work in a very similar way to the real thing. It is, after all, how Rodinal was originally made.
When I say you'll get 64 to 80 ISO from FP4 I mean that's the film speed you'll achieve. Rarely does a developer achieve the manufacturer's film speed (or box speed, the iso written on the box). Usually it's lower, sometimes higher but rarely the same. See my videos on matching your film to your developer.
Thank you for your video! Is it safe to dump diluted Rodinal (1:200) after development in sink ?
I do without problem.
I was expecting to see scans developed with homemade rodinal and compared with commercial one :)) Also maybe you could compare rodinal and parodinal too.. p-aminophenol is not accessible everywhere and people use paracetamol, which makes parodinal..
Great video, thank you
I pass the baton to you, Davit. Do the comparisons and get back to us. After all, I can't do all the work.
Hi John, so the product we got here shall be a equivalent of Rodinal Stock, and we need to dilute as usual before using them for development, is that correct?
Yes, although the exact development times will need working out. Mine is hotter than modern Rodinal so I dilute more but use same times.
Do the few remaining crystals dissolve while in the storage bottle? Is it necessary to filter them out? I mix my own developers, too, and I've always had big problems with any participate floating around in the working solution. Very educational video, as usual. Thanks!
Hi Alan. Traditionally we leave those few crystals in the solution. They settle to the bottom and keep the Rodinal in equilibrium. However, you can filter them out and because you left a few it should stay fine. Basically, if all the crystals went we may have added too much KOH/NaOH.
Hi, I'd like to make rodinal using paracetamol as I don't have access to all of the chemicals listed, I have further issues obtaining sodium sulfite where I live, I could only find sodium bisulfite, can I use that instead, would any adjustments need to be made ?
Recepie is as follows:
200+50ml of water
50g Sodium Sulfate
20g Sodium Hydroxide ( lye drain cleaner in my case )
15g paracetamol tablets
I can't advise on changing the formula, sorry.
thank you
You're welcome
Hello.
I want to prepare the solution according to this compound, but what discourages me is the addition of POTASSIUM in an uncontrolled way that changes the composition of the formula and then the final result is not accurate
That has always been the way to make Rodinal but maybe you could measure the addition hydroxide and make your own formula - it's easy enough to do if you wanted to put the time in?
Many thanks for this. An interesting but simple formula. I;ll check out dry chemical suppliers and give it a try. I see Silverprint in the UK no longer supplies the chemics. Best wishes
Thanks and check out the video notes for a supplier that can send to uk.
@@PictorialPlanet Many thanks!
Does the potassium hydroxide need to be flaked? I can get powder, can't seem to get flake. I am in the U.S. and finding some of this is proving a challenge. The aminophenol is available from one supplier, and I'm not sure it is base, but I think it is.
The hydroxide doesn't need to be flaked. Powder will do fine.
@@PictorialPlanet Thank you very much!
Hello John. I watched the video and tried to purchase the P-Aminophenol - only to find that Silverprint have ceased trading! Do you have another U.K supplier? Greta explanations in your videos as always. Thank you.
I put my supplier in the film notes, Dennis. They're Germany but send here no problem.
@@PictorialPlanet OK John thankyou. I was hoping to find a UK supplier. I have a bottle of Rodinal and will continue to use that. It should last years
@ 1:200!
Quisiera encontrar el iso correcto con fomapan 200 y fx-39. En tu opinión, el revelador aumenta o reduce la velocidad?, gracias.
@jorgetapiarodriguez FX39 will probably increase iso a little compared to box speed but you should test.
@@PictorialPlanet Thank you. I will start the test by increasing a third of a step
Great video! Do you know for how long this will keep fresh and useable?
Probably very long as well. My Parodinal keeps a long time too.
Should last a very long time
@@PictorialPlanet Thank you very much for the answer. Love your videos.
Great video! Too bad I cannot but p-aminophenol in my country. I have to prepare Rodinal from Paracetamol. It works fine, but I don't know whether it has exactly the same characteristics as the "original" Rodinal. 😊
Maybe you could import it like I do from Germany or the US?
Yes it does. I make Parodinal in Germany. In the drug shop in the Netherlands Paracetamol is very cheap and you can get the powder sodium hydroxide too (Rohrreiniger).
@@arneheeringa96 I also make Parodinal here. I bought Mr. Finch's book, where he states that he does not see bromide drag when developing FP4+ in Rodinal 1+100 semi-stand. When I do the same with the same film but with my Parodinal, I can see a strong bromide drag. That's why I'm not sure that my Parodinal has the same characteristics as an off-the-shelf Rodinal. When using it diluted 1+50 with agitations each 1 minute, it's just fine.
@@PictorialPlanetI'll have a trip to US soon. I'll try to buy some p-aminophenol there. Thx!
@@kniganastole I had no bromide drag with 1+100 stand development in Parodinal with Foma 400, however with beer or wine developer mixed with Parodinal and using Ilford agitation.
Also had no problems with stand development with Parodinal mixed with T-Max developer.
