‘South Park’ creators issue mocking ‘apology’ after China reportedly bans sitcom

China has banned the American animated satire sitcom South Park after its latest episode mocked Beijing’s censorship, The Hollywood Reporter reported on October 7, 2019.
South Park season 23, episode 2, “Band in China”, made reference to China’s crackdown on Winnie the Pooh imagery and Hollywood’s reliance on the Chinese theatrical market. Creators of the Comedy Central sitcom Trey Parker and Matt Stone issued a mocking apology on the South Park Twitter account following the reported ban.

If I turn on the TV, and a bunch of people are making fun of me and my family, then I shut off the program and not allowing it to annoy me or wasting my time - I just ‘banned’ the show. I suppose that is because I am a dictator and I am weak and my feelings are too weak because what has been portrayed of me is the truth.

I couldn’t agree more. Huge respect to Matt and Trey for sticking to their guns as they always do. Also I was shocked to find that South Park wasn’t already banned in China due to them being the show that doesn’t sell out because they want to make more money in foreign lands.

@Dongqi Zou I make it a point to research any topic before i decide to comment on it, that means reading information from both sides of the argument, something you unfortunately do not have the legal right to do. there is no "perfect" social system and all media is biased to some side. However there are ones worse than others and china is one of the worst when it comes to media bias and inequality, your only political party is the same one that caused the largest loss of human life at any point in human history (not even 100 years ago!), and you still revere the monster that did it. no one would choose to be ruled over by the regime you are being governed by, thats why hong kong is doing this and why no one is immigrating to your country

China bans all kinds of content from the West. They're afraid that their people might think for themsevles if they are exposed to free information, and allowed to openly discuss and debate that free information. This is why they are, despite all their cultural and national abilities, much weaker than the West, and in particular, much more weaker than the United States. America has its problems, but the law and tradition of the free exchange of ideas is a great advantage over not only China, but Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and even India!

How long...time for xing to come down
Since season one Matt and Trey were some of the very few creators that completely stuck by their art and apathetic or directly opposed to pandering to those with influence and power.
One of my favorite things they did was when they just started, and this is when they would need all the endorsements and influence they could buy as South Park's future wasn't a given, was to put celebrity guests as non speaking roles or playing animals (like George Clooney plays a regular dog who only barks on an episode).
And according to them it wasn't to give into the execs or the actor's desires but because they thought it be really funny to have a big name on the episode even though they were essentially doing nothing and unrecognizable, as a parody of guest stars appearing on shows.
Even classic shows like The Simpsons, which was considered counter culture, still compromised for outside influence and added guest stars (though they did well to make unique characters for them instead of just boot licking like they do now) or concepts if pushed enough by those with power to make the execs happy.
Thankfully South Park is still great now because it'll be a sad day when the show ends and there's no one with that level of influence and cultural reach who is willing to laugh in the face of authority and stand by what they say.
I'm sure they celebrated their ban in China as a an achievement.

It is no longer just access to the Chinese market that keeps Hollywood productions in line. China now financially backs many big-budget Hollywood films. Those deals stipulate that the studios are contractually obligated to allow the financial backers to make editorial changes to the script. Anything that paints China in a negative light, or Taiwan/Japan/South Korea in a positive light, or just generally disagrees with censorship or other hot topics China does like, are written out.
If you're a world leader and pop media hurts your feelings, maybe you aren't such a tough guy after all.

The most obvious and direct sign that a communist country suppresses freedom and the issues that brings, is in their product replication . By only copying technology it leaves no room for true improvement . Where creativity is diminshed then the quality of products and people will suffer. It's essential for growth and improvement. Development of new innovations can only be facilitated where creativity thrives and is accepted. Creativity intimidated the communists as it leaves doors open to new narratives and ideas. So the idea was to copy all technologies and products from the already creative. As a creative analytic ,I notice a distinct lack of or seriously hindered sense of what creativity even is amongst them I've worked with and dealt with.
It's a very linear experience. In retrospect, it had also limited the potential profits I could have created because my creativity was limited confided to certain limitations within the company. It would be the death of a true artist to try exist in such a place. They don't like creativity because ultimately it can lead to new ideas and thinking outside the way of communist thought

It´s an anime episode and the episode is accusing the Chinese government of putting profit before principle. Using Weibo today, I was not able to detect the presence of censorship on it´s platform against South Park.

No. They banned him for using their tournament as a platform to push his political views, which was against the rules of the tournament. Pretty sure they would have done the same thing if pushed his views on MAGA or Brexit.
