The Hero12 feels quite dated with that tiny sensor and I wish the X4 has a 1/1.3" which seems to be the standard at the moment (if not 1"), but I think this is the first time a 360 camera becomes a real contender as you finally get reasonable resolution after the crop.
The Hero 12 does feel a little dated compared to the competition, that being said, at daytime, in 5.3K the Hero 12 does a fantastic job and really holds its own. The Insta360 X4 of course may not have the sharpness and resolution of the Hero 12 in all situations, but it does add the option to frame later giving us so many creative choices in editing, and to be honest when looking at them side by side on a laptop or phone screen, they are very similar in quality.
Great video! You covered all the bases. I would love to see what they looking like compared when you just slightly zoom in on the X4 to get the same perspective on both. Sometimes I like the wider on the X4 but sometimes the closer view is better on the GoPro. But the X4 does such a good job at dewarping on its even wider perspective. Look at the GoPro at 10:24 - the lamp post and the building are all bending inward, while the X4 is straight up and down (even with the wider view). Impressive Insta360! And you can't beat the stabilization of the X4... look at 12:35 - that is with the GoPro in BOOST mode... still can't compete with the X4.
Zoomed in they are both no where near as sharp as a full frame Sony, so I try not to do that, especially considering most people will be viewing any footage on a laptop or even a smartphone screen. As for the Max lens view on the Insta360 it is so wide but the distortion is so well handled! The stabilisation on the Insta360 is freakishly good, I was actually really surprised at how well it handled being throw around like that.
Thank you for the nice compare. Considering to replace my GoPro 11 with X4 as a passive all-day recorder. BTW. Nice glasses. 2:28. I was surprised by the third view. It took me a few seconds to find the camera.
Thanks! The X4 is great and a totally different perspective to the Hero 11, I think you'll enjoy it. The glasses are really useful when it comes to capturing bts, it takes some time to get used to where the camera is pointing though. Well, if you need a link you know where to find one 🤜🏻🤛🏻
I personally have never had a problem with their marketing, so whilst I know what rumours you're referring to I haven't had any unethical experiences or requests.
I tend to use the Insta360 X4 more, basically upgrading from my X3 and using it in the same way, but I love the GoPro too, it’s just such a tank of a camera, and 10-bit Log goes a long way. If I had to pick one, it would probably be the Insta360 X4 due to its versatility when it comes to shots, views, lenses. Both cameras are fantastic though, whilst both are not great photo cameras nor are they very good at low light. For low light the Insta360 Ace Pro or DJI Pocket 3 are the ones to go for.
@@PhillipSkraba I know how you feel. I was going to sell my Hero 11 but I've decided to keep it. IMO it's better than the Hero 12. I will sell my old X3 though as it's pointless to keep it and have the new X4 at the same time.
Well, I really like the Hero 12, it's an excellent action camera, and I've kept all of my GoPros, I think, I've kind of lost count. The X4 is a fantastic 360 camera, and I think it will be interesting to see what GoPro will bring to the table with the GoPro Max 2.0.
Great review! Question for both of you. I am a novice completely new to action cameras and have done A LOT of watching reviews. If I go with the 360 I can get the X3 with a slew of medium grade accessories for around $525. I can pick up the X4 with basically the selfie stick for around $625. I'd be looking at another $100 to get the mounts I'd like to try. Having both cameras yourself, is the $200 more price tag worth it for the X4 for a novice starting out? Or is the X3 with the great bundle the better deal to get my feet wet? I was on the fence between Insta and Hero12 but it seems for the upgrade to the shots with the 360 and the easier software, the 360 may be more forgiving to someone starting out. This will be used for family trips and sporting events, not online content. Thanks for any advice!
Some very interesting comparisons, thanks. One question. What was the sharpness setting on the X4? I suspect it was the medium setting, which to me is vital to avoid losing the benefit of the 8k 360 capture.
They come out okay, I just find it awkward taking photos with them. For video amazing, for photos usable for sure. I might need more patience with them as photo cameras.
last go pro I bought wads the hero 8 black. now it's been a while so I'll buy it second hand on fb market place and mostly lt get the x3 second hand. in America people love to spend money on new and ill take advantage of the slightly used market
360 Action Camera is the future, it's just going to get better and better. You can still color grade without 10 bit, the color science and AI 5nm chip in this thing is doing what the Ace Pro is doing, reducing post color editing. This is 'key' for most end users... 10 bit or frame after in every possible angle and never miss a view, think of those possibilities, single view recording is a thing of the past now with this tech.
Yes, you can grade it too! It’s actually pretty good to grade. I love 360 cameras, and it’s great they’re getting better and better. I’m a fan of the X4, mind you I love the Hero 12 too, but I tend to use 360 cameras more due to the frame later option.
GoPro Hero12 gets my vote. Access to 10Bit and Log for the serious shooters. Shooting as wide as possible adds comic value to the video though. All the buildings with barrel distortion, mad. Selfie stick didn't seem hidden for the X4 in some scenes.
that's an editing choice... you can crop in further and use dewarp in their software and it goes away. you might say the quality is less than with less than 4K remaining after crop, no 10 bit, and no log... and you would be right... but at the same time it requires ZERO effort while shooting to compose the scene. you can pay attention to what you are doing and then LATER worry about making the video. you have total flexibility to show ANYTHING around you and use multiple angles and clips of the same moment in time. that for many is worth the trade off in ultimate image quality. I'm tired of being the guy holding the camera and staring at the screen while real life happens behind the lens, these 360 cameras go a long way to helping relive that while still capturing the moment, all of it.
also the worst X4 distortion was in the 4K single lens mode he used near the beginning of the video. go to 11:23 and he is running in 360 mode and look how much LESS distortion than the GoPro the X4 has... now yes, it lowers the resolution below 4K, but this is the flexibility I previously mentioned.
Hero 12 is a superb action camera, I agree, and yes, it has some serious distortion but I do tend to use my 360 cameras more just because of the option to choose my shot later. The stick was off center due to the dual mount with both cameras on, it should be in line with the camera to cleanly remove the stick.
x4 will be a brilliant camera for sports such as MX, downhill, water sports (surfing and similar), but I like the quality from GoPro more if it weren't for the overclarity look and, of course, the fisheye is stronger than in x4 😅
The X4 is an awesome camera, I love it! The Hero 12 seems to have more clarity, but the features of the X4 are just so good for filmmaking, it makes filming fun and gives you so many options when you edit.
I personally mainly just connect it via usb-c to my Macbook, but I guess some people might prefer mobile editing. I edit 100% on my Macbook, well, unless I need some funky effects, then I use the app.
I'm afraid just like most bluetooth devices it'll allow you to only connect one device at a time. The way around it would be to connect a dual mic system via the Insta360 X4 3.5mm Mic adapter.
I’ve typically only used my GoPro for water activities… I am thinking of a camera I can use to record “Life Footage” with , and view in my VR headset. As far as I can tell, JUN2024 , the insta360 X4 is the most accessible user camera to record 360 video 🤔…
360, way more versitile, can catch shots without even directly looking at it. If someone fell on the ground or had accident or any other fun moment you can go look back at the footage, and see it happen, with regular cameras you can't.
do you think a 256gb card would be sufficient for 8k videos or would i need a 512gb card? would love to see a video on capacity needs for typical situations daily vlogs vs vacation ect thanks
I having been filming a LOT with this camera, and with the 512GB card, I usually fill up about 30-40%. I'd personally go with the 512GB card just for peace of mind.
I found it with the GoPro very annoying that your video is bad when you tilt sideways and dont recognize that while filming. I need a gimbal to prevent that with the GoPro. So i dont a GoPro anymore because oft hat. I hope the Insta x4 will solve that.

NICE, Insta360 is just another level with their stabilization
And their marketing if you know what I mean
I know!! The stabilisation is just crazy on this, I thought the GoPro and DJI were good, this thing is wild!
I personally have never had a problem with their marketing, so whilst I know what rumours you're referring to I haven't had any unethical experiences or requests.
The points from you are amazing! Thanks a lot from Seoul Korea!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks!
Finally someone made non bias review 👏 honest guy, so its time to subscribe to your channel ❤
It's fun putting such different cameras up against each other, both great cameras, for different uses.
As always a great comparison review but you didn't say which one your prefer. And as always a BIG thumbs 👍up.

The Hero 8 was cool, it hasn’t changed form since the Hero 9 mind you. The X3 is an excellent camera, if you can find it used pick it up 🤘🏻
Great video. Looking forward to see the comparison against the ace pro. Also in low light
I’ll be dropping that soon, mind you compared to the Ace Pro it’s not even close when it comes to low light.

Neither, if it's low light you're looking for I'd either go for the DJI Action 5 Pro or the Insta360 Ace Pro 2.

It doesn’t I’m afraid, no.
2 best companies...are you sure?
Yes, pretty sure.
@PhillipSkraba I agree with only one of those, the other for me is clearly DJI. When talking about innovation and product variety...no competition
the gopro software on android and windows is just complete trash compared to insta360.
Yes, that’s correct! I hope GoPro catch up.
