Thank you for your excellent comparison. However, you recommend RS for Virtual Tours but the image comparison showed better from X4 for highlights from door/window which again contradicts. I do have full frame DSLR+Flash for single shots but I am looking to invest in a new Virtual Tour camera but do not want to spend as much as Matterport. Please help to choose and invest in the best between RS vs X4, for the Virtual Tours purpose. Thanking you!
Thanks, I've had the RS for about a year and purchased it more for low light better quality video. I just ordered the x4 only for its faster frame rates. As a professional, these cameras have their place for fun brole and action style shots, pro cameras can not get.
The answer to why there is no better quality from an inch matrix lies in the magic word "bitrate". So X4 has 200Mbps, and One rs has 120Mbps. Newer and more efficient electronics have made up for the quality compared to the older One rs.
What a good, balanced and thoughtful comparison! Not least because you had the X4 set to medium sharpness. That is often just a matter of taste, but in the case of the X4 I get the feeling that it loses detail as well as losing sharpness at the low setting. Sharpness can be recovered in editing but lost detail is gone forever. I have only seen one brief test of this on RUclips so far but I think it is very important. I think your conclusion was spot on. Put it this way - if you showed non identical clips from each camera, which is the real-world way that people would experience them, would the difference in overall quality be enough to enable viewers to reliably say which was which? Maybe in low light sometimes, but would that be enough to make the higher cost of the One RS justifiable for most users? I suspect not.
Thanks for such great review specially considering same testing conditions for both cameras. I had the 1 inch in the shop cart but changed to the X4, saving some dollars for the beers!
After using RS for just 1 month, I switch to X3 when it was launched. I shoot mainly low-light, but long hours. RS starts overheat 50mins later issue and too heavy for bike mount too. I would have get the X4, if only it comes with 1-inch sensor, was quite disappointed too.
As others have said, thank you for an excellent, well balanced and comprehensive video. I've only ever shot 360s with DLSRs and am wondering about an all in one device and on balance it seems an X4 would be the more feature rich option
I would say that stitching together images from a DSLR will ultimately give you higher quality but a dedicated 360 camera will give you good results with a lot less work.
Thank you. The X4 seems to be a disappointment if you read the forums. Apparently canon and quacom (sp) are releasing a new camera soon(ish). Would you recommend waiting?
The X4 might not be perfect, but currently it's probably the best consumer 360 camera on the market (and just to be clear, I am NOT sponsored or in any way connected to Insta360). So far, there is no confirmed date for when (or even if!) these new competitors will be released and there is no reason to assume that they will be any better. Hope that helps.
I would have bought the insta 1 inch but it’s not waterproof so no good for me to windsurf with, so had no choice but to upgrade to X4. No doubt I will bring a waterproof 1 inch sensor out but think it will be expensive. Love the camera your using to make this video and the love the lighting. Also love your videos as know your unbiased views 🥳🥳🥳
What no one talks about with the INSTA 360 RS 1" is the recording time of 4 minutes on a 256GB SANDISK SD card and 20 minutes on a 16GB INSTA 360 SD card at 6K@30fps at 20C ambient temperature.
What is interesting to me is how much better the RUclips footage is of everyone who got one of these from Insta360. I bought my x4 based on such reviews. Mine is terrible in low light. I do find the result improve on manual but my 8k has a lot more noise than yours. I set it to 400 iso 1/80 and in the 5.7k I get useable results. Auto mode in low light is terrible. Outdoors and in very good light it is a decent camera.
I agree 100%. Most of the X4 "reviews" are from professionals, who get the camera free from Insta360 weeks ahead of the launch and spend hours capturing and optimizing their recordings. Don't get me wrong, I love the camera, but I wish Insta360 would cut out the overhyping.
@@ttl_channel Just out of curiosity what were your settings for the low light on the X4. I wanted to use this for weddings but it's marginal even for a well lit church. I can run it through Neat Video or Davinci and see how much that cleans it up. I do also like it outdoors. The main use I have intended for it is the fake drone / crane like shots since more places are banning drones.
For this test, I had exposure and white balance set to auto to compare how the 2 cameras coped. Also, the sharpness was set to medium. If I was looking to optimize, I would try limiting the ISO as low as possible and set sharpness to low. Obviously, anything you can do to add more light will help, but reality is that the X4 will never be great in low light.
Leica did a good job with the 1 inch lens as well. I use that with the original 1R. I would definitely like to get the 1 inch 360 for low light and night photography. The fact is it's very hard to get now if you want to get it it's $1000. For half the price I will take the X4. I'm gonna primarily use it for daytime video. My iPhone takes better stills than either of these. Edit: looks like Insta360 has the standard bundle for $799 again. Still a choice to make, slightly over $300 dif with taxes
Surprising comparison. Big disadvantage of the x4 is, that hdr is only as jpg available. What does not make sense. And no way to adjust the bracketing steps at all. Raw photos are only possible as single shot photo. In high contrast situations it was not possible to recover overexposure just with one photo. Here the jpg HDR showed more details and no overexposure happened. But in low light areas the dng photo had not the artifacts, the hdr jpegs showed. I think, the RS has more options to adjust settings for better quality. X4 is mostly a black box, what settings the camera takes. The firmware updates didn't fix this issues till now.
Thank you for this great review! I appreciate the hard work you put into this video because it really helped me see the differences. I’m a professional photographer so when I hear 1” sensor I automatically think that’s what I need to get but seeing the difference in capabilities helps a lot. I was going to purchase the RS 1 but bought the GoPro Max instead because of the dog harness for some specific media I’m building and went back to get the RS 1 for other uses and it’s sold out everywhere and has been for awhile. So my one question for you and anyone else who sees this comment and would like to add their two cents…do you think the next gen Rs 1 will be out soon (during the summer) or should I go ahead and buy the X4?
Well, let me start by saying that I have no intel on this, but based on Insta’s typical release cycle, I would say that an update is due. I guess it all depends on whether they intend to continue with that product line. I would be surprised to see another product release so soon, but who knows?!
The question for me is: Does the X4 overheat easily if you shoot in 8K 200Mb/s? I normally use them on a tripod. The X3 hardly overheats even after 90 min, whereas the RS 1" overheats after 25 min. I have to use a phone cooler together with the RS 1". That complicates the audio setup quite a bit.
Hii sir it is worth to use insta 360 x4 in daily vloging or recoding long videos becz i saw your video on insta 360x4 heating issue and temperature of my area approximately 32 to 35 degree Celsius plss tell me is it worth
As good as the X4 is, I would not recommend it for vlogging - something like a DJI Pocket 3 (ruclips.net/video/E-oTEXqUST0/видео.html) will give you much better quality. Only use a 360 camera if you want to be able to choose what direction you want to point at after you record the shot, or for other creative effects.
I like 360° video for photos and exporting videos to watch on a 4k TV of my travels and as I already have the RS 1-inch Leica 360 I understand that it's not worth selling it off to buy the X4....
That's a tough one to answer. The X4 will offer you better portability, ruggedness, convenience, longer battery and more flexibility with its various filming modes, but for me, the RS 1-inch has the edge when it comes to overall image quality.
Good to see this type of review … as many have said there is a plethora of dodgy “influencers” out there just ignoring some of the key points … my pet hate at the moment is the lack of Bluetooth remote (and Apple Watch) support so Insta can sell their $$$ gps remote. Thank you so much for doing a sunset timelapse. Exactly what I needed to see as I've been trying to decide between the X4 and RS 1 Inch.

An excellent comparison.
In all fairness, @BenClaremont does a good job so not everyone is a sellout.
The RS 1-inch seems really good to me. A great little camera
Great content and comparison 👍👍👍
Glad you liked it - thanks for watching.
Just wish the X4 had a 1inch sensor. Would be perfect
Hopefully the next gen.
They should make a camera with the x4 specs and 1 inch sensors.

I'm waiting for something better, unless you're shooting in 100% sunlight, the X4s image is plagued with noise.

I honestly would not pay the extra for the RS1". Apart from (maybe) slightly better low-light performance, everything else is worse than the X4.
Excellent comparisons
Glad you liked it
You forgot to mention that the lens apertures are 1.9 vs. 2.2, which gives the x4 an obvious advantage in low light situations.
Good point!
Great comparison - Can the RS be housed in a dedicated underwater housing?
Yes, and I actually have one I am selling. I will send you the link when I list.
Liked and subscribed. I really like your style.
