That coating is anti rust prevention. Its designed ostensibly for the Amazon and to be really rugged. Depending on your POU this can be an advantage. Disadvantage yes to cutting performance without a doubt. The rust prevention can be nice (I know I need it in Texas) and it can be nice when it is a brighter color for not loosing track of your blade. I think ultimately I would prefer a bright handle with a stainless blade, but that is what it is supposed to be for.
Love the fact that you now have a BladeHQ logo at the beginning and you're sort of partnered with them. They are good people.....as are you.
I took the coating off of mine with a heavy duty paint stripper. Super super easy. Then forced a patina on it. It's amazing now!
Not sure if others have chimed in as yet, but the coating is there because 1095 will rust easily and quickly when exposed to moisture. That's why most companies who sell knives in 1095 always sell them coated. ESEE, Ontario, and Becker/KA-BAR all coat their blades for this reason.

+HitmanNumber86 well the edge initiates and cuts, but the sides of the blade will run along whatever your cutting which will slow the cut down and/or not make the cut smooth. which is why a coating wears.
Great review! I slowly fell in love with the Izula, especially since I've always had a thing for smaller fixed blades. I got one about 2 year ago, and I carried it every day for almost a full year, and LOVED every second of it. Not to heavy for me, and gave me SO much capability readily. When I was out and about, I knew I was slightly more prepared than someone who just carried a folder, and for not much more weight. I've beat mine, it's scratches, it's dirty, but it is still ROCK solid.

The Izula II actually rides beautifully on my belt for EDC in the horizontal configuration. It was definitely my gateway to the small ESEE fixies. I have an S35VN Izula with crimson G10 scales on the way, and I’m oddly excited. Here’s hoping for an Izula II in a similar steel. Great vid, as always!
I just picked up the Izula stainless with the kit Saturday at Smokey Mountain Knife works. I was planning to pick up a Sog Aegis, but I got the Izula instead. Wow what a versatile piece of gear. It has found an immediate home in my EDC bag, and I can see wearing it as a neck knife as well. I may get a second Izula and split the kit parts between the two knives. The Izula may never see the heavy duty use it was designed for in my hands, but it's good to know that the capabilities are there. You just never know.
The crinkle coat is on because it protects the blade from rust. 1095 is very rust prone. It really only comes off with wood working activities. A DLC coating like on the Para 2 doesn't actually protect the blade from rust because it has tiny pores that can take in water. A coating like the tuff ex on cold steels and the bk1 coating on the mini grip come off too easily with serious wood working activities. If you don't like it, then you can always remove it and either oil it all the time or put

Just bought the II, absolutely love it, always take it with me when I'm in the outdoors and walking the dog, not in the city or local streets, it's illegal in the UK, but, other than that, I wouldn't be without it, it's brilliant.

I have been wondering what carry style I am going to use for this and now I have multiple ideas Thanks! mine will be the venom green 😁 it was a good deal and I wont lose it as easily in the woods here in Michigan.. i do still kinda want the purple as a backup too

The textured coating can help for grip (if you don't have paracord on it.) And it prevents rust. That is kind of important as it is a survival knife.
I own several of these knives and they are seriously about the best knives i have ever owned. They are serious wood chippers. Works great for everything!
If you want to avoid using velcro for horizontal carry you can just make two belt loops with paracord.
Farmer Diddley has a instructional video on it that i followed, it works quite well. (I use a wide nylon belt, so it takes a bit more time to put through the loops. Although it gets faster with time.)

I have the red Izula with neon green paracord for handle material. I love mine and carry it most of the time along with a kershaw. One of the best knives I own.
Can't believe it's been 7 years since watching this video and first commenting on it, still love my izula2 and it now is my main knife. I thought it would only be a extra but after buying quite a few larger knives I realized this one is perfect for most tasks, and besides, if I need chopping power my tomahawk and saw tend to also go with me outdoors.
I forgot about that kit! One of the knives I got came with it, and I have that ferro/magnesium rod on my keychain 🔑 today!

Great vid! I have the Fire Ant Red Izula (see vid) and I really like it. I think I'm gunna tuck in the paracord at the end of the handle of it like you did cuz I was in the woods this week and I thought I had ticks on me at one point because of the paracord. I kinda wish the gimping was better but it is what it is. I use mine as a neck knife but I might try that belt loop trick too! Thanks for the tips!
I have an Izula and i have carried it for many months in a KSF leather sheath. It is an excellent piece of workmanship and definitely would recommend it. In answer to your question about the coating, they have it there to protect the blade from rust. 1095 is very susceptible to rust and they put it on there for protection, and it is very durable because they want it to stay. if you do take the coating off, keep some mineral oil on the blade to keep it from rusting.
I bought this knife a while back and I use it for work, in the woods and carry it with me everywhere.
I have tried a lot of knives and for the size and capability this is definitely the absolute best I ever had my hands on, one thing I find good is (when you put the paracord on yourself) to leave a long tail/braid at the end so it sticks out of your pocket and makes it a lot easier to retrieve.
I have batoned with this, pryed stuff open with it, generally abused it and still good as new ^^

The bevel is pretty steep from the factory. I think that's why it hung up on the cardboard. It's not a slicer. I con vexed mine and it slices very well now.
I bought a Becker Necker. Pretty much the same. Great knives.
For my Izula II, I used some shock cord to create a diagonal wrap on the sheath. Just passed it through the holes, and made some loops I could pass my belt through. It carries horizontally just fine.

No, that coating makes the spine too rounded to work with a fire starter. It can be sanded down and squared off, though.
The coating is to prevent rust since its 1095. It's awesome to have the coating on the handle so you don't have to worry about the knife rusting out, that happened to my ESEE LS, but the blade is better clean.
Got one in 440c stainless love it, no textured coating ;)

I like the stainless one too. I bought one, but found out later they don't have the warranty like the 1095. Huge bummer honestly!
I have one too. It just caught my eye so i bought it. Very happy i did. Uncoated flat grey. Very sharp and nice sheath.
I do not like paracord handles. They get filthy dirty, filth not only gets on the paracord, but in between the cord and builds up a layer of dirt. They also suck up every bit of water they come near, and I believe it is needless to say how bad they get when around oil, grease, ashes from camp fire, or gasoline. I'd like to see this knife with good handle.

Paint stripper..then liquid bluing for guns..it gives it a black coating that is smooth . I did it to all mine except my esee 4 I like the desert tan color
paint remover will take the coating off. make sure to keep it oiled after, probably will have to leave the cord-wrap off(unless you dont mind taking it off and putting back on after cleaning and oiling) ;)
I love these little knives 🔪. I have 2, a green one and a black one. I have both cord wrapped right now, but I want to make a micarta scale handle for one. Also, the sheath they come with is decent. The little ant 🐜 is cute. 😂
The coating prevents corrosion and the texture is for grip and the reason it is on the blade is that it is Easter to coat the whole thing
Just use aircraft stripper to get the powder coating off. And spray it with cerekote

Makes sense. I personally feel like they could have struck a better balance between protection and utility though.

LOVE these knives :) Great video. And as you said, I believe the reason why it doesn't slide through cardboard as easily as other knives is because of that thick, traction coating. I EDC'ed one of these for years, and loved it. Very light, and I liked knowing I had something a little more sturdy and rugged on hand if I need it. No matter what lock a folding knife has, it STILL have a limit to how much it could take before the lock breaking. A fixed blade is a solid piece, IT would have to break
There's actually a stainless version of it now, as well as a Damascus. I'd still go with the 1095 though.
First thing I did to mine was remove the coating, the used cold blue for some protection against rust.
Due to the Australian knife laws, I purchased an Izula II for EDC. I wanted to try a small fixed blade for daily use at work and home but, like you, was disappointed with the cardboard cutting - probably the hardest daily use it would get on any regular basis.
I do love the Izula II, though. Great in hand and solid.
I'd love other suggestions as to small, fixed blade EDC options, though.

The coating is on there probably because of the steel. 1095 steel can rust very easily. The coating will stop the rust from happening and you won't need to maintain it with oils as much. That's my guess
Just bought this knife in S35VN and I’m glad it doesn’t have that texture to it.
If you took off the texture coating you could get it powder-coated.

I have the Izula II in Orange with the micarta handles (I also bought my gal an Izula II in the pink) and the rough texturing doesn't bother me because I relieved the edge. I also have the ESEE 6 and the edge seemed relieved (and cut better than the Izula) which gave me the idea.
So, it cuts better in an EDC role for me but the edge would dull quicker in a survival wood processing role.
Like the knife and the review, was more than just a knife critique, which I was pleasantly surprised. Two things though...1) I would have liked to see appropriate tasks with this knife not just cutting paper and cardboard. 2) how is this different from the bear gryllis knife? It looks the same, the same sheath functions and $50 cheaper. I actually got mine on clearance for $10. Thanks again for the work, nice video.

Agreed. I have an Izula. Cute design. Not that practical in most situations, given alternatives (like the Izula II).
Having one concealed on your belt is a good idea, if you're camping with people who might faint if they see a 2" knife. Otherwise...
Quality. The difference between the Izula and Bear's knife is the quality. Steel is one major factor. Weight.
The coating is there to protect the knife surface from rust since its carbon content makes it susceptible to rust.
I ordered the bright green one not seen here. I'm going to wrap the handle in viper green(green and black) paracord. Should look cool!
I love the reliability of any ESEE Knife. I currently own the ESEE-5 but I need to get something this size.But my next purchase is the ZT- 561.

Most folders are referred to as pocket knives. Where as fixed blades aren't.

Think about getting an Izula II for in my belt based bare essentials survival kit and a regular Izula for carrying around the ankle. not for "tactical" use but for a back up for if I ever lose my folder again, I hated being knifeless. And because having a fixedblade on you is always a good idea.
Why around the ankle? My pockets are full!! xD
I'm a big fan of fixed blades in general. I don't think this would work for me for EDC, but I like the concept.
because of the laws here in germany i cant carry 95% of the high quality folding knives so i am going towards small fixedd blades for edc now. i kind of fell in love with the izula2 but i really cant imagine how to carry this without "showing" others that i carry a knife. thanks for your review and especially thanks for your ideas on how to carry this knife!

Well the izula and its sheath are designed for concealed carry. You can hang it on your neck under some clothing or even on your belt if you wear a jacket that covers it. In California it's illegal to carry it concealed, it must be on your belt in the open.

Yeah it's really easy to conceal. Sometimes, I'll just throw it in my pocket, sheathed of course. It's super easy to conceal in winter, just throw in on the belt, covered with a coat or on the neck under a sweater.
Daniel Chong yea you are completely right, i finally bought the eskabar and i am carrying it horizontally on my belt between 10 and 11 o'clock position.
The clip plate is new. Didn't used to come with that.

might be 5 years too late but the izula 1 has a stainless steel variant and has no coating. I like this knife because its small and i dont like flip knives. oh and its a bullet ant not fire ant lol

The Izula II is not as carry-able as the Izula in my opinion, unless you are a thicker guy and have more body to hide it in.

There are factory micarta scales available from Esee, or there are ridiculous amounts of custom makers available all over.
You can actually buy micarta handles from the factory that makes the knife for about 15 dollars. It really is worth it.
Thanks for the profile shot of how it looks under your shirt, unfortunately I can definitely notice you have something there, it actually looks like your pantal region is getting a little happy, which would definitely attract attention.. so I don't think this knife will work for me, as 'legal concealment' is my primary deciding factor.
Say Heah, Yeah, The Essee Izula certainly is a very popular knife, Yeah it seems like a good one or else it wouldn't be so highly regarded on Forums and here on RUclips. But I like a full handle on my knives regardless, I'm willing to sacrifice weight for capability. And I have a couple of good small blade full handle knives, like my Browning Independence, my Rodent Solution, Anneversary Mean Street LE, Rodent 3 which is becoming one of my Fav's with the A.M.S. LE being my Fav's. Don't get me wrong, I do have small knives like the Izula and neck carry it, but I also like the slabs on mine because it adds another demension to the knife, then it becomes more functional to me, Yeah, infact when I ordered my BK-14, I ordered scales for it, When I got the scales they came in Black and Orange, so I had to order another one so the other scales wouldn't go to waiste heh heh heh, Yeah, the Izula is a good one, , ,

To be honest, I'm not real interested in the Candiru. I think the Izula has it beat.
I have been eying the purple Izula. Unfortunately blade HQ is out of stock :( It looks like it would be a great EDC knife. Particularly as a food knife. Of course in California I wouldn't be able to carry that concealed. But, it only qualifies as concealed if you have ready access to it. So if it's in my pack it would probably be ok. I would also look into some way of securing the knife to the sheath so it isn't easy to pull it out.
1095 Steel is ferrous and it rusts. The coating prevents the oxygen from reaching the metal.

Only down side to this knofe is the price. Otherwise a great little knife. Realistic light/medium duty EDC knife.

Can I carry this horizontally on my belt, shirt untucked, in Los Angeles? I do construction/maintenance in k-12 schools. Knife law is too confusing. Do any Angelenos know the answer?

Have you checked out the Buck/TOPS Knives CSAR-T knives, including the Liaison neck knife.
You will thank me later. Lol. Remember to remove the handles first . Set into paint stripper for 30 minutes then wire brush the paint right off. Then you should patina it somehow via mustard or bluing . You tube whichever one you like and do it..you will love the esee all over again
I would be more than happy if someone could tell me which blade surfaces or finishes are safe and adequate for food and which are dangerous for our health (toxic) i prefer stainless
