We stopped at Ramstein for a couple days on our way back from Afghanistan. It’s the most beautiful base I’ve ever been to, a massive bx that’s pretty much a shopping mall with stores and food places everywhere and we could go off base and explore Germany. Compared to where we just came from, it was like heaven. I also did wonder why we had such a large base there still, since Europe is normalized since ww2, thanks for answering that.
Good video but it missed a couple of points: first, a major purpose of military bases in certain countries (namely Germany and South Korea) are as "tripwires" that would automatically pull the US into a war should that ally be invaded. It's a way of reassuring the ally that the US leadership won't get cold feet should the worst happen. Second, a major factor in why overseas bases are so unpopular in some contries (namely Japan and SK) is that the US personnel based there are not subject to local law enforcement, which stokes local anger when those servicemen sometimes commit serious crimes and are effectively above the law.
Jurisdiction is worked out through a Status Of Forces Agreement (SOFA) between the local host nation and the US Department of Defense. Courses of action in the event of an accusation of a midemeanor or felony committed by a member of the US military are guided by the relevant SOFA. For example, my understanding was that a military member detained by the German polizei for Driving Under the Influence was entirely subject to German law enforcement and penalties. "The US has a moon base where it launches rockets powered by cheese and houses SCP-096, which was developed using funds from Steve Jobs' estate, however, according to this list, it doesn't exist."
The reason why there are so many bases across Germany is because that's where the border of West Germany (US ally) was with East Germany (Soviet sphere of influence) during the cold war.
Not really. If you look at the map @6.02, you can see that most of the US facilities are in the south and west, and nowhere near the old inner border. After WW2 the US controlled the south of West Germany, the British controlled the north of West Germany, and the Soviets controlled East Germany. The inner border was mostly between the British sector and the Soviet sector.

Shahnid Ismail It’s slightly more complicated. The quoted Ramstein Air Base is installed on German territory owned by Germany. However, this “landlord” does not collect any rent from the USAF, pays for any environmental damages due to military activities, provides some extra upkeep and pays part of new or upgraded buildings. For example, the entire planning (about 15% of the total budget) of the new army hospital (replacing an older one) right across Ramstein Air Base has been paid by Germany.
As a non-native living in Okinawa, I've been able to experience firsthand the effects of the U.S. bases' presence on the people living here. I live in a city where a marine base sits right smack in the middle of it. Looking at an aerial photograph of the city hung inside the town hall and seeing this one ostensible piece of foreign-designated land in the middle of it is somewhat unnatural, to say the least. I'm friends with native Okinawans and Americans from both inside and outside these bases, and the situation truly is a complicated one with no real solution. Thank you so much for highlighting this one example of U.S. base presences affecting local living here in Okinawa, and for portraying it so well.
That base is being shut down and moved closer to the sea for strategic reasons. It was built before the city sprawled out to it's location. Just watched a video on it this week.
Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa - Originallt built in rural farmland. Locals set up bars and small-tent restaurants outside the gates, then other small business catering to the servicemen, and then small homes for the local workers so they could live near their businesses and keep their families.... And that outside community grew and grew until the Air Base became surrounded by a city. And somehow the Marines are at FAULT? Also, the locals complained of the noise (well, they DID decide to live next to an active airfield) and locals complained of drunken/misbehaving Marines (well, they DID open all those bars and girly-joints) and then locals complained that the base occupied valuable farmland (translate: valuable real estate for building construction) so the Marines and US Gov. offered to build an artificial land base along the coast and relocate there - but , no, that wasn't good enough. F*** em. Those locals will be glad enough the Marines are there on-island should the SHTF with China or N.Korea. Semper Fi, my brothers.

The Saudis and Chinese are running around there too. The big difference is: they are handing out short term fixes that the people want. Food and money. That's just not sustainable. you are correct about many other hidden bases. In fact I used to work for google a few years ago. One day an engineer came by to inspect the new server building that they had built on the site that I was at. I got a chance to talk to him about how each facility is customized to its environment. Each one is environmentally friendly as possible and they try to use the area to help cool the systems. Case in point, the facilities that are located along the ocean usually use ocean water to help cool the servers while the facility I worked at processed sewage waste and used that to help cool the servers then cleaned the water and put it back in the local river, which was cleaner than the actual river water lol. So this engineer and I got to talking about all the unique bases and he said the coolest one by far is a joint military/NSA google facility in the middle of that african desert. He said it was 3000 miles away from anything and all supplies had to be helicoptered in. Highly trained staff work there in case of problems because no one is going to be able to come and help you if there is one. Remember it's a google facility so its a internet hub as well. In the middle of that freaking desert. Insane.
@@xievub6200 I'm not sure. I'm just repeating what he said. When he said it I was stunned. I was not expecting that from him. He was quite proud of the installation. The Wiki article on the Shuttle says there were several military/civilian airports around the world that the US equipped with basic needs for emergency shuttle landings. However, in dire emergencies, any runway that can handle a jumbo jet could be a possibility. The shuttle was the world's heaviest glider, the final approach is the only approach, with no possibility of aborts or go-arounds.
Great idea! One item on that: there's a tiny airport here in Scotland called Machrihanish, right on the west coast. It has a massively long runway, and rumour has it that's because it was extended to be an emergency strip for the space shuttle. I'd love to see if there's any truth in that. One thing that is for sure, when it was an RAF base it used to be used as a base for Navy SEALs.
In the late '90s when I commuted through Camp Futenma to work, I happened upon a local bookstore that had a few books in English/Japanese. I read the account of a local Okinawan from WWII that detailed how the Japanese used to shoot Okinawans if they spoke Okinawan rather than Japanese. The local Okinawan High School refused to fly the Japanese flag. When Okinawans protest foreign presence they are including the now majority Japanese along with the much smaller presence (by isolated population) of Americans - equally.

In relation to 9:00. From an electromagnetics perspective, relay via low earth orbit satellites with inter-satellite links across significant distances would have less delay than doing the same through a fiber optic cable following an arc connecting the same points on a great circle. The overhead of using a satellite would be a function of the number of switches made, and the additional distance traveled by the signal to reach the satellites. Any transit distance greater than four altitudes would favor satellite communications, if assuming no additional switching time, aka bent pipe. Taking starlink as an example, orbiting at 550 km, any two points greater than 2200 km apart would have less communication delay using a bent-pipe satellite relay. Washington and Ramstein are ~6500 km apart for example. So why is this not used more frequently? Intra-orbit inter-satellite links are relatively technologically immature, although there have been major strides within the past decade, with starlink being speculated to be the first commercial constellation to make use of them. Previously, inter-satellite communications have been mainly performed by higher-orbit backbones. When considering geo-synchronous satellites for the relay, there are no two points on earth where it would be faster to communicate via geo-synchronous relay than a direct fiber optic cable.

The answer to the question 4:48 is :: "To secure peace is to prepare for war." A thing the romans already knew and why their empire existed for 1500 years. The USA is only 240 years old.
The difference is that the Romans knew they over-reached after Trajan and never went east again. The US however doesn't want to stop until every country is part of its empire, all vassal states filled with US military bases.

The reason why there are so many bases across Germany is because that's where the border of West Germany (US ally) was with East Germany (Soviet sphere of influence) during the cold war.
Makes sense.
Yeah, that was literally the "front line" of the cold war. Many bases have been closed since then due to reunification and the end of the cold war.

For those who wonder... yes, Rammstein's (the band) name is based on Ramstein Air Base, more precisely, on the 1988 Ramstein air show tragedy (they even describe it in the song Rammstein).

Hey!! I was in Djibouti on that base. It's not super-secret what we're doing. Probably people will think I'm lying but the whole 15 months I was there I was force protection for civil affairs teams that were digging wells, building schools, hospitals, and other infrastructure projects. The Saudis and Chinese are running around there too. The big difference is: they are handing out short term fixes that the people want. Food and money. That's just not sustainable. The USA is doing it different. Sure we handed out some food and cash, but the majority focus was on self sufficiency. For example: we would install solar panels to pump water from the well. We would then TRAIN locals how to maintain them and doing other project maintenance. I hope it works out in the end. I am proud of what we did. you are correct about many other hidden bases.

That sounds like it could be really interesting.
The Wiki article on the Shuttle says there were several military/civilian airports around the world that the US equipped with basic needs for emergency shuttle landings. However, in dire emergencies, any runway that can handle a jumbo jet could be a possibility. The shuttle was the world's heaviest glider, the final approach is the only approach, with no possibility of aborts or go-arounds.
what a great idea!
4:27 Your map is showing a US base in Newfoundland (Eastern Canada), that base closed in 1994.
US military personnel regularly visit Argentia. What remains of the original base, mostly under ground, is being maintained at a minimal level in case it's needed again. Harmon Airforce Base, Stephenville? That's closed. Nothing left there but toxic waste.
Amazingly even-handed way to deal with this.
Pay now or pay later (at probably greater cost). It's cheaper to project power than to actually use it in war.
That was a smart comment sir
And before you now it, some guy comes in and makes us all loose brain cells
@@blixx87 No, he has a point. There are plenty of more important things to spend money on besides threatening others.
It's 1127. There is digital poster in the Pentagon transit center. That's one of the slides. It's a US Army Logistic Program ad. Has an image of the globe with red dots on it that zooms out and says something along the lines of "With USAASC we help supply over 1127 US Military bases and stations around the globe"
OVER 1127.
It's funny how they have like 2 dozen bases scattered around the suiz canal
Looking for this comment.

For those want to read a great old book "The Debt of Honor by Tom Clancy". What Steven King is to horror Clancy was Poly-Ops. All the of his books that where turned into movies like Patriot Games are just Holly Wood action adventures. Clancy's early books devote thousands pages geo-political and military strategy, in which this US logistics strategy here is explained in greater detail. If you start reading Clancy's books, look at the publish date then look at world history for the last 35 years. The man was prophet of seeing crazy. I wonder what he would be writing today if he was still alive. Just be careful of falling to far down the rabbit hole, I had to stop after the cold war.
I'll check it out, seems like an interesting author. Thanks for sharing
14 minute video felt like 2 hour documentary

Thank you for being so objective when making these videos! There are other people that would let their biases for or against America skew the video, but you do a good job of presenting all sides of the issue in a fair manner (as far as I can tell).
Finally going to sub to you, thanks again!
There are ~300 US Marines in vaernes, norway.. stationed there semi-permanently
@@yaz2928 We don't have an empire. I really hate it when people use that word.
@@DirectorBird Not technically an empire I suppose, since there's no "emperor" title. But an empire in the same way the Soviet Union was.
@@yaz2928 I can't agree in any way shape form or fashion. We don't do puppet states.
@@DirectorBird Did you even watch this video? Most of the US's "allies" are vassals or puppet states.
I like how unbiased this video is, represents both sides fairly. Of course, it is extremely biased against anything that doesn't fly.
On a couple of the shots (where they showed the new buildings, Xchange, and the Commissary ) I thought, "Those buildings look like newer versions of what I used to live in". Pulled up google maps and Yep. The expanded Camp Humphreys. Man, I remember when that place was small that their sponsored officers had to slum it with us at Osan.
Me: I wonder if the US is the only country who does this.
Wikipedia: List of countries with overseas military bases.
Reaction 1: Woah, they are not.
Reaction 2: Germany and Italy both have military bases in the US!
Reaction 3: How close to one another are the Iranian and the Israeli bases in Eritrea? Or the American and the Chinese bases in Djibouti?
Reaction 4: Iran's base in Syria is really really close to Israel's border. Is that the place Israel has bombed a few times?
Well, thanks for that rabbit hole.
No country has military bases in the USA

Great video as usual! The US has deployed so many bases abroad since WWII, China is now begining to follow the same path. The 21st century is definitely going to be interesting as a struggle for power that dwarfs the Cold War ensues!
